      >too long
This, last time I put 120 hours into a JRPG it was FF13, getting 100% completion. For P5, it was 120 hours just for the story, I wasnt trying to max all links or fill the compendium

Why were the Phantom Thieves so soulless and why did the group dynamic feel so superficial? It didn't feel like they were friends. At the end of P3 I felt sadness. At the end of P4 I felt bittersweet. When P5 ended I felt nothing at all. It was incredibly underwhelming.

Which is sad considering that P5 comes off as a story written by a team of high schoolers. I can not believe a company of fully grown adults (probably in their 50s) actually wrote P5.

i get it though but yeah i think the new writers were a little.... rough in their writing

It's a game about rebellion written in a country where everyone is deathly afraid to be so much as impolite, much less genuinely rebellious.
The game attempts to make your party come off as morally ambiguous by making your party members behave like COMPLETE moronS but then absolutely none of the morally ambiguous possibilities of what they're doing are given an ounce of credibility and everything works out perfectly in the end. Do you want me to think they were being reckless and doing something that had a chance of failure, or not?
Even aside from the moronation the party has to sprout so that the game's "ooooo maybe you're doing the wrong thiiiing" drama can land, there's still a ton to wade through that exists solely to prop up other characters as smart. Morgana loses any credibility in his supposed thief skills when he somehow can't intuit anything about robbing a fricking BANK so that Makoto can be KWEEN, then Makoto has to be the wrong kind of autistic and thus give Futaba a niche, then Futaba and Makoto have to somehow not see straight through Akechi...
The final resolution (of the base game) is just a worse version of P3's. An enemy that's conventionally unbeatable because its power is rooted in a desire of the collective unconscious is utterly defeated by your manifestation of a conscious desire that runs counter to the unconscious desire blasting it through the fricking head. "Conscious beats unconscious because conscious is right and unconscious is wrong" - doesn't that strike you as out of line for a Persona game?

Contrary to how it sounds I don't hate the game or anything. It's just riddled with reeeeally dumb writing.

tbh i thought they were edgy in the wrong ways but not edgy in the ways they should be. like it felt they were way too harsh on shadow people when like we already know from p2/p4 that shadows are huge exaggerations of people.

It's the unfortunate consequence of any company that gets too large. The product has mass appeal but the core suffers.

      >i don't know what it's about
Your character decided to go for a walk one night and play Captain Save-A-Ho, and had the misfortune to do so against an upcoming politician that pushed the courts to frame you for assault when the butthole tripped on his own.
Since you've been branded as a violent thug, your parents ship you off to Tokyo where you're placed in the care of a cafe owner who has you bunk in the attic of the restaurant.
You quickly learn that the Volleyball coach of your new school would already be an butthole even before you learn he raped a girl who decided to jump off the roof in shame.
So you and your new Bro who accidentally awakened the power of Persona go into his head to force him to feel remorse. The hottest girl in the school(though not by much) and an annoying talking cat join you and you decide to try doing that to more buttholes that deserve it, and you pick up friends along the way.

The fact that they had a whole other semester and additional content in the base game and instead of using it to give Haru some much-needed screentime they elected to create some dumb sister-killing prostitute who's only purpose in the game was trying to lure in the Rise crowd by spamming "senpai" on repeat and bring back the fujo-bait and have him easily forgiven for murdering two of the party's family members.

played this when it came out. Then 4 in 2020 when it came out on pc, then I learned japanese from then until now when I'm just wrapping up 4 again in jp and I'm going to play 5 (royal now) in jp next.
Maybe my replay of 5 will change my opinion but I think 4 is way better in terms of the atmosphere and plot. Cozy small town murder mystery with fun occult rumor stuff with the midnight channel. Versus generic big city tokyo WE GOTTA FIGHT THE CORRUPT ADULTS!! TAKE YOUR HEART WATCH OUT JOKER!!!!!!
not to say I didn't like 5, though I felt like it really dragged its feet narrative-wise for the last 20 hours and the akechi plot twist was one, fricking obvious, and two, fricking stupid how the game says 'actually the protagonist was plotting this huge scheme behind the scenes with all his friends and you just didn't see it 🙂 epic huh'
basically everything with the story was hacky and overbearing and stupid and bloated from how I remember it but its redeemed by pure presentation and good gameplay.
But this is all memories from 7 years ago and 4 had its stupid parts too so I might change my tune upon replay.

    Haru is introduced too late.

The earlier Personas feel like they were made by people that were deeply into Jung and the occult. P5 felt like it was made by people that skimmed wikipedia.

I'm 20 hours in. The game's special effects are way too flashy and distracting even with mods that reduce the visual vomit.
I finished P3R recently and it was much cleaner and sharper to look at.
