    >Original Mementos music
    >The entire Okumura arc, including Morgana being a pissy little shit, Haru just being dropped in, and some of the worst dungeon mechanics/fights, not to mention how awful the fight is with Okumura in Royal
    >Theme of rebelling against societal norms/expectations that leads to the suffering of those unheard is almost entirely covered up by the cast saying, "I hate adults!"
    >Not even the tiniest build up to Yaldabaoth, to which even P4's "the gods did it" nonsense seemed better put together
    >Majority of confidants focus on minor npcs rather than the character you actually hang out with, an example being how Makoto spends most of her social link talking about her new friend
    >Royal doubling down on the Naoto/Haru issue with Kasumi where they barely get any good screen time until the very end, get very little usability in combat, and it feels lame to romance them since you miss out on events that occur earlier on
    >Events in general suck, such as the fireworks show being literally rained on
    >Once Makoto joins, all competence/nuance Ryuji and Ann have goes right out the window

The biggest issue for me though is the Akechi "twist". I like that the actual twist is that the group had him figured out from the start, but Akechi being the person that sells you out is still such a lame bit since they set it up at the start of the game. It unironically should've been Haru. After her father died, she should've turned on the group, been roped in by Akechi to "bring them to justice", then realize that it was Akechi all along when you fight him on the boat and he changes into his other form. It would've actually been a good twist, retained Akechi's role as a traitor as well, gave Haru more depth, actually gave her a real reaction to her father dying despite the group saying he wouldn't, and made for a way more interesting fight with him.

Still love the game, but it has a frick ton of issues. All of the games do; P5 and P5R aren't immune to that.

      >All of the games do; P5 and P5R aren't immune to that
That's fair, but 5's weaker story and characters definitely make it more obvious when you dig deep into the game. It's a lot more flashy and accessible than ever though so people ate that shit up

I'd agree. I personally see P3 as having the highest highs and lowest lows, P4 as being "good" all around, and P5 being this massive improvement in nearly every aspect...except for the story, characters, and themes.

I adore P5 for how it lets you wander the world a bit more, how they brought a lite version of demon negotiation in, how they added technicals to the combat, the ways they play with the tracks (Beneath The Mask having an instrumental version before you can go outside, a vocal version when you can leave, and an acapella version for when it rains), all of the flourish they did with the art/UI, how they made proper dungeons alongside randomized grinding opportunities, how social links have benefits beyond just fusion boosts...there's too much to list.

But the story is, like you said, flashy, but there's very little to it. The themes are muddled at times due to characters saying they're rebelling, but also rebelling in a way that still conforms with social expectations. That's not even mentioning how so many good scenes are ruined by characters just yelling, "Screw these shitty adults!" when there are genuinely better points to come away with. And the characters just aren't as interesting as older games.

Like I said, I love P5, but good lord does it have issues.

It's funny you say that, because a friend of mine got into Persona when 5 Royal released on PC and she got right into 3 and 4 after that and she said pretty much the same thing we're saying right now. "They're a lot less accessible but why the frick are 3 and 4 so much better written and also I wanna frick Mitsuru." Even people who actually try out the rest of the series after getting into it with 5 can see it.

I definitely felt it with playing Reload recently. I played P3FES years and years back, so I had forgotten just how much more bite that game had at times. Party members genuinely loathe each other at points, people outright die brutally, Ken's entire plot starting out is murder suicide, Shinjiro's basically killing himself after accidentally killing Ken's mom, and that's not even getting into how basically every single social link ties into the theme of accepting that parts of life come to an end.

I'm not going to sit here and dump on P5 really because I do still like it, but it definitely lacks any real substance in the story and characters. Despite being a story about rebelling against societal norms/beliefs that hurt others and being literal thieves taking down a network of villains, there's basically no risk. No one that doesn't deserve it dies, all of the characters are chummy (outside of Morgana and Ryuji, but frick that plotline entirely), and your goals/motivations are all clearly defined and justified.

I was hoping P3R would maybe bring people more into what the series can offer in terms of writing, but it feels like it hasn't hit as hard sadly. Whether you like the remake or not, it does retain that type of writing, so, at the very least, I'm glad Atlus isn't sanitizing their old games.

The characters can be fricking boring (I can barely even remember what Ann or Haru are like), the social links can be very repetitive ("oh no I'm being blackmailed by xyz please go to momentos and beat them up") and the deadlines feel very arbitrary compared to 3 and 4.

  9. 2 weeks ago

    The story is garbage.
The social links are the worst of the 3 games. 3's were a bit mediocre mostly, due to it being the first attempt (though sun is still perhaps the best social link of them all), and 4's were incredible and all about personal growth (highlight death). 5 forgoes everything 4 developed and instead of learning how to grow, it's Joker solving their problems for them. Yawn. Not to mention they're all exactly identical.

The format of the series is inherently jarring. It's impossible to actually settle into it. You get hours of story focused content with little to no gameplay, and you want to get to the dungeon, but then eventually the story gets mildly interesting and then the game goes "lol okay time for a six hour dungeon". Then the same happens in reverse. The moment you start enjoying the gameplay, it ends and you then having to go back to six hours of story focused content. It's annoying honestly.

You're also actively punished for trying to pace out Tartarus/Mementos in shorter sessions (which would vastly alleviate this issue) because the games inherent design of time-based events means that doing several hours of Mementos in one session is better than doing several one hour sessions. Otherwise you lose out on social links, special events and other meaningful benefits.

tl;dr the games inherent design is jarring and bounces between story focus and gameplay focus in a way that doesn't let you get fully into pace with either, and punishes you if you actively try to take them at a mixed pace.

That's a good point, and something I've been wondering about myself. The last time I played Persona 5 it felt like I had to divide my time into "Momentos time" and "everything else time" because of that deadline making it the most optimal way to plan things, but it was pretty jarring and tiring to play it this way which is ironic because it feels like the whole point of the system is to let the player plan out how they want to spend their time in-game.

I actually wanted to make my own RPG where the story isn't a huge focus beyond the MC wanting to make a frickton of money, and I was thinking of dividing it into chapters that require you to have earned a certain amount of money before you can continue the story. That removes all the strategy from planning but I think it'd be less jarring and stressful this way and much more freeing.

I agree with this for p4/5 but p3 doesn't really suffer from this because the plot fights are "at X day, you fight a boss, get ready before then" instead of "beat the boss before X day" - that means they can actually spread the story throughout the month instead of the "ok you beat the dungeon in 2 days again? time to do nothing for weeks lol"

also in p3 dungeon time is during the evening where you barely do anything. even in FES where they add more shit to do at nights I literally ran out of stuff to do at night by september and would just use the arcade to minmax persona stats or fricking go to bed early on a lot of days, you can definitely get away with spreading dungeon trips out a lot more unless the remake changed something.

NTA, but I genuinely worry that they'll feel like they have to "top" P5. P5 was literally about being globally recognized thieves that take down celebrities, politicians, and crime lords, escaping from the police and going on crazy heists. P5 is already so over the top in terms of everything it does that the idea of P6 trying to match/surpass that energy is worrying.

I like P5, but I still vastly prefer living in the dingy dorm in P3 where you bum around with the class clown and diva, or P4 where you're relaxing in a foggy town with the biggest highlight in the area being a goddamn Walmart equivalent. I enjoyed being just some kids caught up in bigger shit, trying to fight off otherworldly forces with some magic powers and whatever knock-off dollar store weapons you can get.

I don't want them to even bigger with P6; I want them to scale it back if anything. But, with how a lot of devs work, they always try to keeping escalating things.

I don't doubt they'll tone it down. Persona 5 had a huge issue with trying to top itself constantly, from taking down a high school teacher to a yakuza boss to the prime minister of Japan to a God in no time. I know all the jokes about fighting God in JRPGS but it's especially jarring in Persona 5 to the point where I don't think there's any way to escalate.

That's fair, but I feel that's honestly the appeal of modern Persona games to me. I really dig the time in-between the drama. So many games, movies, and even books just jump from one big moment to the next. When you watch a superhero movie, you rarely get to see what that superhero does when relaxing, how they interact with companions, any of that.

I really dig the atmosphere that comes with, hey, you won the big battle and staved off evil for a while...now what? I like the sense of living your life, making connections, slowly building up resources through mundane tasks like a part-time job, all of which contribute to your ability to then fight these otherworldly threats.

TL;DR I kinda dig that doing well on my exam in school gets me more allowance money from my guardian, which I then use that money to buy cold medicine at the local pharmacy to heal goddamn poison status when I'm fighting a horrific monster. It's neat.

I like that shit too, but I gotta be honest, there's gotta be a better way to make the transition from dungeon crawling time to social time less jarring. Persona 5 was especially bad about it because you went to Momentos all the fricking time for Social Links and whatnot.

              Anonymous

I feel like P3 actually did pretty good with that since you literally couldn't go dungeon crawling during the day time...which 90% of social links occur. There are 2 nighttime social links in that game (Devil and Tower), and once you finish those/they aren't available, you have the entire night to do whatever the hell you want.

The problem I feel with a lot of P4 and P5 with the dungeon/social balance is that you outright miss out on content if you don't do everything in a single day while in a dungeon. P3 basically solved that by just making it where day time is for socializing, and nighttime is for dungeon crawling/level social stats/doing the 2 social links that take little investment.

                Anonymous

Yeah, that's a good point. That time felt more divided by the game, which ironically made it feel like you got more freedom to plan out how you want to spend your time. It could be interesting if they messed around with a formula like this in the future. A Persona game about college students could turn it around for example where you do dungeon crawling during the day and socialize at night cause there's actual shit to do at nighttime as an adult and it'd be easier to plan around.

Seriously though, it's really not that hard. There's no reason P5 couldn't have done the dungeons at night. If anything, thieves working under the cover of darkness is way more thematically appropriate. Just make it where nighttime is mostly for dungeon crawling and building social skills for the daytime.

Just have 1 day a week where it's a dungeon block, and it doesn't take any time at all. You can do grind, or not, as you wish. Then add enough links where you can't do like 25% of them in any given play through.

You are on rails a lot longer. Sure, P5 lets you walk around during the tutorial a lot more than P4 but it takes much longer for the game to allow you to roam free and actually play the game.

      >Should I fuse the starting persona? I’m new to the series.

Absolutely. So long as you register everything, you can just re-summon whatever you want in the exact state they were in before fusing. Also, the game actively pushes you to fuse everything since personas gain very little experience/require a huge amount to level up or gain new skills. The game wants you to be fusing constantly, using the confidant bonuses to get tons of free levels. Best advice is to constantly fuse shit, especially early game. Don't get too attached to one, at least until end game where you can min-max a few to serve specific roles. The more you fuse, the more options you have for bigger/better personas, which means better skill variety and elemental coverage.

By end game you'll probably be making hyper-specific built personas that cover single elements/roles (physical, group, heal/buff, etc). Or you'll do like me and grind out some stupid shit to do a bit of everything but not as good.

Gameplay is piss easy. The game is horrifically unbalanced around what you are capable of doing.
There also aren’t nearly enough boss fights. Mementos should have had many, many mini boss battles sprinkled throughout serving as progression gates a la Tartarus bosses. You have all these demons available, use them. There wasn’t even some fun boss fight in Royal added to the new Mementos section, which was baffling to me. But at least we got darts? Nice priorities

Thw potential of P5’s combat is wasted due to the awful difficulty balancing on the side of the player. You have so many tools to completely destroy enemies that they can hardly if ever be able to retaliate properly towards you. Every encounter comes down to extremely slow resource attrition. Your party has laughably few options (nearly a dozen color coded hurt spells and a handful of basic buffs/debuffs) and playing Simon Says with the elements lets you nuke every enemy. The system rarely rewards players for trying to come up with an actual strategy based on what an enemy does, as most enemies are focused solely on shitting damage on you. Add to this an entire system that DEMANDS you sneak attack enemies or risk getting thrown out of the dungeon and combat quickly becomes monotonous for my liking.

On any other difficulty, hitting the enemy's weakness deals double damage, but on Merciless it deals triple. So Hard is basically Merciless but with double damage, which makes it harder.

There really isn't much to complain about with the series at all up to this point. Nor do i think there will be for Persona 6 either. Wait about 15 years from now, when the old guard at Atlus is gone, they get sold to Microsoft or something, and Persona 7: From Hee-Ho To Black comes out which is set in America with all college-age characters with black and/or brown skin (except for, like, one or two asians to appease the old fans) and it's an open world collectathon with a battle pass and no fanservice. At that point games will probably be $90 too, so your $50 a month Gamepass sub will be the best way of playing it.

      >PTs being huge hypocrites, it's ok when they do it. But not when maruki try to unrape Ann's friend
That actually reminds me of a criticism I had. When the PT make the choice to join you against Maruki, they do that shit way too easily. I could maybe see Ryuji or Yusuke being able to reject what Maruki has to give them, but not Haru, Futaba, or Makoto who have dead family members return to them. They seem to know it too when they kind of make them brush right past it in the awakening scenes. Also it's ridiculous that the amount of time spent on it and the writing of them rejecting Maruki's gift to them is treated the same as, again, Ryuji'. Ryuji could potentially get a scholarship for something else, but their dead parents sure as shit can't just come back to life. It's not remotely the same.

It's a game about rebellion against society... made in a country where most people would rather die than mildly annoy a random stranger
This is the root of most of its problems.
    >Antagonists have to be comically evil for hours and hours before you can even so much as frown in their direction
    >Absolutely no sense of scale in what the bad guys do, drug trafficking and sexual abuse are placed next to art forgery and being a bad boss
    >Whatever the hell you consider Akechi to be- antihero?- is a fricking moron whose plan regarding Shido made zero fricking sense even trying to approach it from an excessively honor/family-bound Japanese mindset
    >Base game party members, plural, who are more shilled than the fricking DLC character
    >HI I AM THE VERY COMPETENT AND INTELLIGENT MAKOTO. DO YOU WANT ME TO FERRY SOME DRUGS FOR YOU, MISTER PROBABLY-A-CRIMINAL? WAIT, WHY ARE YOU LEAVING?
    >and yet somehow Ann and Ryuji get even worse once she joins, holy shit how
    >Party members have to be static because they're both SLs and fixtures of the main story
    >Except when they transform into complete c**ts who hate each other because the plot demands they break up for awhile
    >Big twist ("you were betrayed") has the teeth taken out of it because Akechi is the most obvious traitor known to man
    >Final boss is only VAGUELY led up to by the general theme of the antagonists being supported by "society" (a handful of powerful people around them)
    >Final boss is "bad and mean unconscious desire gets killed by good conscious desire and everything is okay afterward" like that isn't directly backwards from the entire Persona series leading up to it
    >Moral you're delivered after all of that is "sit down, shut up, and let the adults fix things, we know it was already our job but now we're going to REALLY try, we MEAN it"
    >DLC doesn't really seem to resonate with the stated moral, instead resonates with Yaldy-like "you WANT to be a meatpuppet deep down, but you can be better than that"

because the game was rewritten during development away from the characters using actual guns like in persona 1/2 to this airsoft shit because the jp version of the ESRB became way lamer since the 90s and they would need to give the game a higher rating then they wanted to give high schoolers real guns.

same reason the characters use the money they get from inside a palace to buy a fancy dinner once and then spend the rest of the game complaining about how they can't buy things, they cant actually benefit from stealing.

The story falls flat after kamoshida immediately. A rapist teacher beating up students a real vicesral bad thing and then the rest is utter fluff. None of them have any real problems in their life. game was in development too long, you can see like the rings of a tree how this game went through several revisions over the years and changed direction/tone several times with bits of each showing up

    >original P5 intro that was made years before the game came out showing a completely different characterization for haru compared to the actual game because we decided she should be more fluffy and moe
    >first few months of the game are a lot more gritty and real with bosses based on scandals taken directly from the headlines with characters like kamoshida being way more mundane then the funny fat gangster who is the frontman in a massive conspiricy by a japanese politician to mindhack his political rivals and the general populace so he can get elected because we decided to make the game less 'real' and more fantastical good vs evil
    >futaba's entire chapter of the game is a non-sequitor - her dungeon is a lot more like a persona 4 dungeon and while neet cave = pyramid is a passable metaphor actually the entire reason this segment is in the game is from an earlier draft where the phantom theives were lupin style globetrotters before we decided to make another game about japanese high school students (this is why there's a random town outside the pyramid that has nothing to do with the metaphor of being a neet)

except that shadow futaba doesn't try to kill you like all the other palace owners in the game, instead its like persona 4 where they just show up and say HELLO HERE IS MY PERSONAL TRAUMA and then at the end of the dungeon they suddenly go apeshit and try to kill you because futaba cant handle her issues without a jrpg boss battle.

there's no headcanon here, there are tons of interviews before and during the games release where they talk about how they overhauled the game - don't forget this game got delayed several times.

          >except that shadow futaba doesn't try to kill you
what does that have to do with anything?
It seems like you're just trying to find weird avenues to nitpick instead of putting any thought into the very obvious intent.
Every single arc revolves a different kind of tyranny, if they were all the exact same it would be boring, repetitive and shallow. Again, Futaba's shows the impact of tyrannizing yourself with negative thoughts.

If your problem is that a JRPG is a videogame then you're probably better off critiquing books or movies, man. People don't just "be positive :)" without some form of inner turmoil and conflict they need to resolve.

            >what does that have to do with anything?
When I'm pointing out her part of the game feels out of place with how every single other arc of the story works that all follow a similar template, pointing out the stuff that makes her different is literally the entire point I'm making - I enjoyed persona 5 but I would enjoy it more if it wasn't full of half drafts stapled together for 120+ hours
            >The narrative of Persona 5 was designed like an omnibus, with the antagonists pursued by the party changing regularly.[22]

anyway, the 2011 earthquake made them change up the story concept heavily - you know what else happened in 2011?

I think you're trying way too hard to make Persona 5 look like a messy half-finished game, like you don't understand every game in existence has gone through a ton of revisions and reworkings. That's how game development is.
And Persona 5 still came away as a very cohesive whole. It has its flaws, but nothing like what you're so desperate to prove.
If you don't like Futaba's arc because it's different (on purpose to strengthen the point) then that's just borderline autistic screeching.

I think it was a massive missed opportunity to not have Sojiro show up in there as a positive influence trying to get out.

On one hand, yeah, that would have been a great addition. I think they were going for self-absorption with Futaba being the only actual living thing in the labyrinth. Would have made for a very sweet climax though.

P5 seems to struggle with the subconscious representation thing in general, honestly.
I'm glad they did away with randomized dungeons so there was more personality to be had in the environment, but it's so rarely used. Every dungeon gets a fixed number of setpieces where the Thieves all comment "wow, so that's what they really think of [xyz]" and maybe if you're lucky the palace ruler's shadow form has something more to it. It could have been integrated this way in fricking P4 if they just made one big "miniboss floor" with both a setpiece and the midboss of the dungeon.
And cognitive versions of entire known characters were used, what, ONE FRICKING TIME? God.

It's literally the same game as 4 except slightly worse and therefore has no value.
