dungeon crawl stone soup's pretty neat too

you can install linux and download a free mario/donkey kong country clone and a free mario kart clone that are of surprisingly high quality. there's a free fire emblem type game as well but it's a bit generic on the plot/character design front and the portraits are half the size they should have been. otherwise neat game. the battle system itself is diverting

Whats the name of the FE clone?

Freelancer, you can download it for free on myabandonware and an HD patch is available that makes it run better than it used to on modern PCs. It includes things like much further render distance which makes a big difference.

      Battle for wesnoth

Wesnoth posters deserve replies. The official campaigns are good but the fact theres a huge modding community makes it even better. Try the "The Unknown Lands" (so something similar) campaign if you haven't. Cool desert muslim/hindi themes with summoning added to the engine and AMLAs for all units so max lvl doesn't mean you save a unit for the final scenario.
Tips for beating campaigns on hard? I play the mode without savescumming and I must be an idiot because I understand the mechanics but can't finish anything on hard

      https://crawl.develz.org/

DCSS is also top tier and still getting updates. I wish they didnt nerf guardian golem but I admit it was a lil OP sending my allah akbar goylem at high lvl enemies for ~5 mana

Not yet. There are scenarios and skirmish mode vs ai, lots of lobbies for ai only games too if you're not into pvp.

        Anonymous

It just has "scenarios." They are some fun but it's not polished and I wouldn't call it a singleplayer campaign at all. Obviously you can do skirmishes with the bots.
But really, just play multi my man, it's fun. There's also the co-op modes you can play with others if you really can't make yourself do pvp, but BAR is the 2nd RTS I've ever gotten into multiplayer for despite playing lots of RTS, it's really accessible.

Thanks anon. I'm interested in taking a look. I think I've a vague memory of wanting to play it before it was released and forgetting about it.

How does it compare to SupCom FAF?

        Anonymous

I'll be real, while I have played most classic RTS, I did not play Total Annihilation or Supcom.
From what I know, plays faster, more room for microing your units effectively, looks pretty.
There are alot of pros from supcomfaf and vets that play BAR and like it. I know the previous games had lots of good QoL features for controlling the game, I believe BAR is even better about this. The amount of ways to efficiently control your units/army is the main thing I gush over the game about.

Without more specific questions, that's all I can really. I'd just pick it up try it yourself. Very active community and most of the player base is actually newbies/rts casuals and then you have more serious players so it's a great spread.

Ummm... despite your curt reply there are PLENTY of games available for Linux enthusiasts. Many of which are well recognized classics such as:

      > Minecraft
      > Albion Online
      > War Thunder
      > Club Penguin
      > Runescape
      > DOTA 2
      > Portal
      > Second Life
      > 7 Days to Die
      > Hollow Knight
      > Civ IV
      > Rocket League

I read days ago, that was about AI and relation to game development, that an AI can create entire games itself in 5-10 years (also dismiss people..?) How do you see that?

I don't know if you're still here, but can you tell too, why there aren't any true next gen graphic games on consoles?
I mean a graphic that is extremely blatant.

          Anonymous

The answer is not one single thing.
Firstly, the console and game developers are prioritizing 2k/4k homosexualry before all else. One might ask "But isn't that next gen?" Yes, it is, but it's far from what you should be prioritizing. Big resolution =/= better graphics. They should be focusing on better lighting engines, putting more effort into hand-creating textures and assets, higher framerates, and giving the game an appealing artsyle. This requires optimization, a large team full of talent, and a lot of time. The problem is, investors don't want larger teams full of people that demand actual good pay and games that take longer to make, they want to shovel shit out every year with the bare minimum effort to turn a fast buck.
Secondly, the hardware just isn't that fricking good. It is midrange at best. Yes you can squeeze some more performance out of it by making your game developers program the game specifically to the game's architecture and video drivers but it isn't that fricking much. If it were a PC, you are not taking your shit off of Medium settings and forget about RTX, 4k, and other bells and whistles.

Freelancer, you can download it for free on myabandonware and an HD patch is available that makes it run better than it used to on modern PCs. It includes things like much further render distance which makes a big difference.

Frick, this screenshot I found uses the alternate icons. You can choose between those and the originals. Pretty much every alteration to the original game is an option you can turn on/of during installation of the HD patch.

Freelancer is one of my favorite space games. I just wish it had a few more features. Namely stronger pirate faction features, an economy that's dynamic instead of fixed, and maybe the ability to own entire stations yourself.

        Anonymous

I've not ben active in the modding scene, such that it is, for a long time but I'd be surprised if there isn't at least 1 mod that provides those things. Discovery maybe.

My home server was Eagle Utopia, which I feel did Freelancer modding the best way - everything was aimed at being Vanilla++, so no star wars or star trek ships, but it added more systems, several non-flayble ships like the Transports, a Nomad faction you could join, cloaking devices, Capital ship NPC patrols, allowed clans to have their own territories and their own custom star system, made NPC behavior more challenging and gave higher-level NPCs ship loadouts that could match players (and station guns were powerful instead of ticking you). It unfortunately didn't have a dynamic economy, but the prices and availability of things did change on a weekly rotation. Several of the new star systems were aimed at being more challenging for players, so the server owner did cool stuff like having areas that were off the limits of the ingame map to make exploration more meaningful.

The coolest part is that since everything was built out of the vanilla game, it was all handled server-side. The only mod semi-required was the Deathmatch system mod if you wanted to access that system, and the server allowed speed mods but capped Thrusters to prevent unfairness. The guy running the server also became the premier anti-cheat provider for other server. I miss it like you would not believe.

Oh my god, the forums are still up.

There used to be quite a few of those. We called those "freeware games" back then. Now they're called indie games, but there's very few. Most of them already fail the first one (being free).

A game I liked a lot was An Untitled Story. That game was neat. There's plenty of games equivalent to it they'll charge you over $10 for.

I've found myself playing randomizers for old games and getting endless fun out of that. I've probably played thousands of hours of Link to the Past and Super Metroid randomized to shuffle all the items around, sometimes in small ways for a remix, sometimes in completely wild ones. My only complaint is the software to randomize the roms is found on a website so if it goes down, that's the end of randomizer for that game (Thankfully, the original Legend of Zelda and Mario 3 have stand alone programs that I can keep eternally even if I have to manually update them).
