terraria/minecraft were the one other exception i considered adding. i agree they make good use of it, but i think thats just because sandbox kinda transcends open world

Skyrim's only quality is that exploration is fun and the world is comfy

i dont disagree that skyrim is one of the better examples, but it still has one of the big problems: what do you do once youve explored everything?

      Arma 2 and 3

      Would DayZ count as well?

idk any of these games, i was aware of arma but never knew it was open world. fwiw the only people i know that play it are morons

        >what do you do once you've explored everything?
What do you do when the credits roll in a linear game? Open worlds are big but finite, they're not like true sandboxes that can give you as much content as you're willing to put the effort in creating.

i see your point, but for me the two big drawbacks are:
          >in an open world, time is spent making the largely irrelevant areas that you just go through getting from A to B, whereas in a linear game, all the time and resources are spent on the shit that matters
          >in an open world, you have to spend the time going through the fricking boring fields, whereas in a linear game you just have a nice quick load screen. fast travel can mitigate this to an extent, but even in some open world games with fast travel, i feel like my times being wasted
i more or less agree with

Skyrim, minecraft, terraria, shit like that
Basically any game that actually has a huge emphasis on worldbuilding lore and immersion or open ended survival and crafting and literally would not be able to work without being open world.
For anything else it's just a trendchasing marketing crutch since normalgays salivate over the term without the slightest clue why and drop the games only a few hours in.

on where open worlds can work

          also

          BotW.

In most open world games, the word only exists to separate the content. In BotW the world is the game.

Never topped, even 6 years later.

          is bait

BotW has fundamentally changed the way open world games are designed and elevated player's expectations of the genre and you can't even acknowledge it. Sad.

You want to keep playing the same game forever? Skyrim is one of those few games where I can just sit, eat some bread and watch the npcs go about their lives. It can be super comfy like that. And it helps that I've modded it into the ground, but even then you have to move on. It's not endless.
Or of course buy the VR version, mod the shit out of it, and say goodbye to inferior reality, praise Todd.

The amount games that would benefit from making smaller open worlds is awfully high. i roll my eye everytime i open the map in a because i just know that it's filled with shitty, padded filler

Smaller worlds or semi-open worlds. Freedom at the expense of everything else is for casuals who don't want to be challenged by anything.

        >Freedom at the expense of everything else is for casuals who don't want to be challenged by anything.

Forcing "challenge" onto the player would - by necessity - mean a more linear experience or grinding placed onto the player.

          Anonymous

Having the player actually have to work or think to overcome obstacles instead of ignoring anything too difficult for them would make the journos and casuals very upsets, I know, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make. The alternative is a waste of time in a giant blob of empty space with nothing but filler. If people want a sandbox, go play a sandbox. Don't mistake that for an open world or good game design.

Are you actually defending those water levels that ruined games for decades?

Name some actual names. If you think "water levels" in general ruined games for decades then you deserved to get filtered by them. The industry is worse than ever now because it's trying to pander to the soccer moms and plebs who think games are either supposed to be cinematic walking sims or literal walking sims in giant empty open worlds with nothing but filler content because they don't respect the player enough to either have the intelligence or willpower to overcome anything.

I appreciate shadow of the colossus for not trying to waste the player's time with its open world. It's just there for the atmosphere and to make the world feel big, not trying to trick you into wasting your life on copy pasted filler or collectibles.
