shifts from struggling for day to day survival to save the world way too quickly
    so pacing, i guess

      Anonymous

eh not really, it's a natural shift imo. it's the night before the last day and everyone has to pick their final course of action. Not every ending is as simple as "saving the world", the only one that fits into that category broadly is Gin's because it's not selfish nor political. It would be hard to make the argument that Naoya, Amane or Atsuro's route is broadly "saving the world" when they're ideologically driven. Also Yuzu is just abandoning it all together.

this is arguably something I'd level against the sequel instead.
you get to know what's happening over the course of several days and by the last day you've more or less decided to deal with the crisis in one of several ways
Unless you Yuzu the frick out of there- that'd be actually the biggest break in pacing and it's even sort of acknowledged in the story by a sizable part of the cast getting very angry at you at the very least.
In tbh2, Day 1 10:00 you're shitting your pants, day 1 22:00 you go to bed turned into a JIPS agent tasked with saving the world.

You’re stuck with the same 4-5 party members throughout the majority of the game so by the time the route split happens and the roster expands, you don’t get much opportunity to play around with the other party members for the last few segments.
I also find Atsuro’s route to be cool in concept but flawed in execution.
    >entire arc hammers in the point that you shouldn’t trust the government/give them power since they’ll abuse it
    >proceeds to do so anyway
Keisuke’s fixture with trying to save Midori and getting pissed at the revelation that people will still try to kill her even after she’s helped them makes sense when you read the concept art book and learn that he has a younger sister that Midori reminds him of so he feels a similar level of protectiveness towards her but the game doesn’t make let you know any of that.
Other than that, not much. Still a fantastic game.

outside of the customizable MC, atsuro is your only phys option until day 7 and he gets shafted by rangdas

literally every QOL thing tbh2 added that wasnt in overclocked

day 2, 4 and 5 are mostly filler days

most of the day 7s are structured very similarly (overclocked day 8s being distinct from each other is great though)

yuzu's day 8 is literally unfinished from a game design POV cause in the missions where you save kaido and midori, they don't appear on the field even though their death is a lose condition

this bit about atsuro's ending and being stuck with the mc yuzu atsuro keisuke midori for most of the game

      being honda is suffering

        >day 5
        >filler day
theres not only 2 possible character deaths but a minor route split that's fairly unknown. day 5 can genuinely play out in like 20+ unique ways depending on your choices. It's awesome. Can agree slightly with day 2 and 4 but stuff still happens and is vital for building development and tension for the rest of the game.

I've never liked the extra storylines and endings in any of these remasters. Also happened with Devil Survivor 2, Strange Journey and Radiant Historia: suddenly new characters come out of fricking nowhere or some villains motivations have a slight change to make them more sympathetic and their endings be more attractive

I honestly don’t think tbh 1 suffers from the same problems as those because they’re still centered around the characters you get to know throughout the base game and even expand on their characterizations in a way that makes sense.
For example, Naoya's 8th day being split into sub-routes does a really great job at fleshing out chaos as an ideology.
A lot of megaten chaos reps subscribe to what I like to call "b***h chaos" [cough, Chiaki, cough] where they root for a "might makes right" mindset and... that's it. Head empty, only anger.
However, there’s a more subtle interpretation that doesn’t get enough attention imo. Those who are in positions of powerdon’t have toabuse their abilities in order to rule over others. Nothing in the chaos ideology says that you have to use the power of demons for selfish purposes. Just that you side with the demons for ultimate freedom. That freedom can be on an individual level (where we see the “might means right”), or can be used for humanity as a whole (focusing more on freeing humanity from YHVH’s rule).
That’s where the kill/no kill sub-routes in Naoya’s eighth day come into play. Both of those routes represent the two different interpretations of chaos. The game does a really great job in following SMT II's footsteps in showing that chaos actually can be good.

is there a more cost-efficient and, most importantly, completely brainless way to approach demon auctions in these games than just using the buy-it-now feature? i know it's moronic but it's the main thing keeping me from going balls-deep into replaying the series, i haven't even seen most of the endings in og let alone the extra 3ds stuff

      SMT 4 tier difficulty curve

no ? day 1 has wendigo, day 2 has some pretty challenging escort/protect missions, day 3 has beldr, day 4 is like day 2, day 5 has multiple boss fights, day 6 has the SDF battles as well as multiple boss fights and day 7/8 is where the difficulty peaks. SMT 4 peaks with medusa and minotaur and then the only other notable boss is king kenji before the alignment lock.

YooHoo is legitimately fricking moronic, Shomonkai aren't really fleshed out well in my opinion, and there is literally ZERO reason to follow or trust Naoya (which is unfortunate since the best ending is trapped behind his ending). Minor complaints though, Devil Survivor is fricking awesome

      Anonymous

      >there is literally zero reason to trust or follow Naoya
I personally disagree. Yes, he invited (You), Atsuro, and Yuzu to Shibuya knowing that they would get trapped in the lockdown. But here's the thing: the Shomonkai had already defeated Jikokuten six months prior to the beginning of the game, which meant the barrier between Tokyo and the Demon World had begun to deteriorate. This is why demons such as Kudlak were able to come into Tokyo on their own. So, let’s say that (You), Atsuro, and Yuzu weren’t in the lockdown during that week. Either the humans trapped in the lockdown fail and humanity is eternally stripped of their free will, forced to walk under YHVH’s command, or somehow the humans are able to end the lockdown and survive another ordeal and let’s be honest, the most realistic way the lockdown could have been ended is if the demon tamers broke out, like in Yuzu’s original ending and we all saw how that turned out: Honda lost his shit, and everything was thrust into a truly chaotic world.
Even with Yuzu's eighth day, the only way to make things right is to restore the barrier, but (You) only did that because the government was treating them as terrorists. And the only reason the government was so easily able to identify them as terrorists is because Izuna and Fushimi had frequent contact with them throughout the lockdown.
If normal demon tamers broke out, it would be harder for the government to identify who the "terrorists" are, and it's pretty unlikely that they would have been searching for a way to fix the situation they're in now.
Then there’s The UEM field annihilating everyone in the lockdown after the week was over, and humanity would be stripped of its freedom, forced to walk along YHVH.
So if Naoya hadn’t involved (You) and your friends, there isn't really a good ending for humanity. Either the world would turn into a chaotic wasteland, a less than ideal person would become King of Bel, or humanity loses its freedom.

      >there is zero reason to trust or follow Naoya
He’s never once lies to you about what his intentions are and helps you out other routes besides his (barring Amane’s for obvious reasons) provided that you prove yourself as capable to him. Honestly, he’s more trustworthy than a lot of other people within the game.

I think when you look at the effect they have on Amane, you can definitely see just how much their teachings have warped that poor girl and they become more fleshed out as a result.

It depends on which route you take. I think Amane route and choosing you want to hear the full story gives you the most explanation instead of kind dropping the plot point and forgetting about it right after in the other routes.
