Average roguelite: Do a few runs and unlock stuff and its fun, then do more and get bored of fighting its lacking enemies in probably very lacking random map design that always feels the same, then get even more bored as progressing in the metaprogression becomes slower and slower.

Average idle game too, fun for like 5 seconds, but gradually become more involved, which is against the core concept of an idle game, so they turn into busywork sims instead of just watchign numbers go up.

Actually I'd say this is just most modern games, since basically everything has shoe-horned RPG progression and eventually you either unlock enough to trivialize the game or unlock everthing and realize the core gameplay is not fun

      First game was better

I think it might just be market saturation but I remember a decade ago I absolutely loved rogue lites, Isaac, Gungeon, Spelunky, even deck builder stuff like Slay the Spire was great, but now the moment I see the "roguelike" or "deckbuilder" tag on steam I immediately lose all interest in the game, even if it grabbed me initially and genuinely looked fun I can't help but think about all the repetition and meta progression bullshit that would fatigue me a few hours into one

I've been playing Breach Wanderers recently and its a good game at its core but the metaprogression is killing it. It has like 8 characters with 4 unlockable passives, by leveling them up to 10. After level 3 it takes more and more runs to level them up. Even if they took 1 run per leve, that'd be 80 runs. Its not. Its more than that. And a lot of these passives are basically needed for the characters to function properly or even really be worth plaing. Stand out being the character who hurts herself constantly who does scaling damage based on how low her hp is... at level 10. Her main scaling mechanic is locked behind maxing out her grind. And its not optional.

wow, that sounds fricking terrible, I don't know what it is but a lot of people really love progression for it's own sake and end up missing the forest for the trees about what's actually fun in a video game

an anecdote I can remember with isaac is that I played a lot of rebirth when it came out, and generally dipped out with the DLCs as they were kinda meh, but then this team of modders released antibirth and I had a lot of fun for a while, just playing with all the content it added, I remember not even thinking that much about the characters, just doing runs because the game was genuinely fun for me at that point

fast forward to those devs being hired and the release date of repentance and I can say that while the DLC was great, and it was a very cool surprise to have all these additional characters, I can't help but feel like actually completing it was a massive pain in the ass that stopped being fun way too long before the finish line

now here's the kicker, I remember before the release Edmund doing a little press circuit thing, doing many interviews with various people, and in one of them, I can't remember which, he mentioned something akin to how important the unlocks were for players and how he went through a lot of effort for that and made sure to include many of them so players had things to do for a while

and then it finally dawned on me, as great as isaac is it ended morphing from a game that was fun for its own sake to a game about unlocks, I wasn't actually enjoying my time doing a run with whatever character, I had to run down the massive list of characters and playing the game almost like a checklist doing a bunch of runs for every route with every one of them

I mean is a reward for doing a thing with a character fundamentally bad? I don't think so, but somewhere along the way they became these chase goals that were tied to this meta progression that ended up brewing which I feel wasn't that huge a part of the game initially

In Breach's defense the game has > 500 reviews, its low budget and it seems no one has bothered to bring it up before (achievements show < 50% of the players actually beat any area beyond part 1 of the first map) so the dev may just have never been told its an issue or realized just how absurd the grind is.

Isaac was ruined by people who chased "X god", then when they got it, deleted and started over because they've somehow managed to make a like decade long career out of playing one game.
It also locks a lot of fun or important items behind the challenges so I can't just sit down and play a fun character and see what the game gives me, I have to play some stupid gimmicky bullcrap or I'll never unlock a given item

        >0-2 minutes
You get in, you take a shit, you have a moment for contemplation, and leave the stall. It's just business.
        >3-10 minutes
You've settled down for a quiet place away from whatever you just left.Perhaps you'll take this time to think about your day. Maybe pull out your phone and watch a quick video.
        >11-30 minutes
Something's gone wrong here, your pipes are blocked and your leg is getting numb. It's a struggle to get anything out, but you've been here too long to just stand up and walk away.
        >31-60 minutes and longer
The smell is getting to you. Several other guys have come and gone and not all of them have washed their hands before leaving. Nothing has come out but a little nugget. Both your legs feel like they're covered in bees. You've studied all the stall graffiti several times but their wisdom is useless against the horrors churning inside you. you pray for release. Release does not come.
