NEO TWEWY

Does the padding ever go away?
Every day feels like a slog compared to the original.
Nearing the end of week 2 and it's not getting better.
Only picked it up because people hyped up how they wrapped up the original casts' story.
But at this rate I might as well pretend like the original was canonically how everything ended, NEO is just fanfic, and move on

The combat is fine, but it does feel a lot slower than the original. I did a 7 chain fight and it took forever. I remember doing 16 chains all the time in the original and it feeling lightning quick. To be fair though, it's been 10+ years since I last played it, so maybe I'm remembering wrong.

          >set your pins up right
Is there any trick to this beyond combos? Like, are some characters better with some pins than others?

More so your pin synergy. Different Psychs/pins will have different sweetspot locations in their Beatdrop gauge and they’re related towards how you can effectively manage your damage output. For example, Vulcan Uppercut’s sweetspot location is smack-dab in the middle, which is related to that being where the launched enemy reaches the apex of that launch. Now, pair this up with how psychs like Vehicular Assault/Meteor Strike do extra damage to an airborne enemy when they reach that apex and bam, tons of damage at once.

Alright, thanks. I've found some pins I like and haven't been deviating too much from that. At some point I'll get around to farming different pins from different difficulties.

              >are some characters better with some pins than others?
Not for specific pins themselves, but characters have specific threads that only work for them, making a definitive tier list for who's best at dealing damage and who's worst, assuming everyone has identical stats.
Resonance shirts and Element shoes affect the entire party, so you can give someone like Nagi Threads which buff your other characters, who then use their own threads for personal damage increases using things like L Button Damage Up, generic/character specific ATK Boosts, Rapid Reboot, etc.

Haven't bothered with clothes much either. Still working on grinding up Style, and I'm usually broke anyway. But yeah, I'm sure I'll be much more efficient when I can get decked out in good clothes.

To add on to what others said, the highest power pins aren't always the actual strongest, even for a given attack type. Differences in attack pattern, element, uses, and recharge time can make a huge impact on the flow of your combat, and it's better to do sustained damage that controls the flow of battle and consistently allows for mashups than having huge burst damage and then waiting five seconds for everything to come back online.

The whole thing with Susukichi is that towards the bitter end, he wants to do everything that he could not to face Shiba directly. Imagine having to be the one to point the gun at your own mother, brother, wife, best friend, whatever significant association one has, even if you know that they're doing the wrong thing and have to be stopped. He finally steeled himself to do so because he felt that no one else could, but when the Wicked Twisters caught up him, they essentially gave him another excuse not to do so, a way of mentally self-justifying.
His comments afterwards, about a follower just following a leader, speak to this. He even refers to his actions as a "real poisoned move", indicating how much he considers his going against Shiba to be vile, an absolute last resort. If he wasn't at least going to keep the WTs safe, he could fight them. To the end, Susukichi represents a "failed follower", contrasted against other followers of the Wicked Twisters. While the WTs speak up to Rindo and tell him their honest thoughts, and don't just agree with him because he's the leader. Susukichi, however, could've go against Shiba and opted for every possible excuse not do so until the very end.
NEO shows off the leadership styles of Shiba and the Player team leaders in order to highlight their flaws and contrast Rindo’s character development as he becomes a capable leader.

          >but AnOther is such a poor replacement for CAT.
Except those aren’t going for the same thing. Neku’s whole thing with CAT is that he doesn’t take account of the subtleties and even misinterprets Mr. H’s message of "Enjoy every moment with all you've got" to be something self-serving when it’s actually the opposite due to his trauma, which is why Mr. H sets him straight.

Meanwhile, in Rindo’s case, he thoughtlessly spouts an0ther’s meanings and tried to live by them only to find out that Motoi didn’t mean a damn thing he said and was just stealing other people’s content. However, instead of just brushing this aside, Rindo sees Motoi as a flawed human being instead of being purely irredeemable (which you can see in how he hesitates to take down a Plague Motoi) and even feels sympathy for him and chooses to take inspiration from his messages to apply them to his own life in a positive way by applying his own meaning to them. NEO tackles that theme of idolization through Rindo while OG TWEWY never really had the chance to fully explore that outside of post-game snippets, despite how big CAT was to Neku’s life.

      >new cast is a downgrade, it feels like what a 70yr old think zoomers are like
I always wonder why people think this considering how NEO’s crew arguably has more depth to them. Just compare Shoka and Shiki for example.

OG TWEWY was a lot more forthright with its character development and it arguably rushed a lot of them. Shiki forgiving Neku way too fast even though he tried to slowly choke her to death will always stick out to me as pretty weird. NEO’s more of a subtle slow-burn but I’d argued that’s a benefit since a lot of the characters are pretty fleshed out that way.

NEO has a lot of issues. The Scramble Slams were far too close together to have 3 of them, and if you had been keeping up with your food, threads, and pins you could cuck yourself out of the highest reward because you were too strong to farm enough points before killing everything. Chaining noise into player fights was also unintuitive.
The combat system was mostly fine, but there are some flaws with it being 3D. The most notable of which being the final boss, where you camera freaks the frick out when using short ranged pins. Also your party members being able to be damaged while you're dodging got me killed several times, and them walking into attacks while you aren't controlling is fricking stupid and shouldn't happen but somehow does.
The 3D maps out of combat have some minor but stupid issues as well, like 104 and Center Street where the camera shifts and then you start walking backwards making the camera shift back.
The characterization was good for the most part, outside of Nagi's interactions with Fret. She just randomly hates him because he's trying to stay upbeat and not mope around in a game of life and death, but she likes Beat who stays upbeat and doesn't mope around in a game of life and death. And then when Fret's at his lowest, he still doesn't mope around and act all depressed but now she suddenly doesn't hate him for it anymore?
The ending was a fakeout into a deus ex machina into another deus ex machina, and not being able to fight Shiba's Cantus form was a major letdown.

Overall I'd give it an 8/10, the gameplay isn't as good as the original TWEWY's and there are some ai flaws but most of the new characters (ie. everyone but Nagi basically) are great, and get better on a replay when you know the background behind Shinjuku. Tighten up the combat, tweak the ending a bit, and pace Scramble Slams differently and it could be 10/10.

Nagi doesn’t like Fret because he’s a fake-ass b***h who tries to cover up his feelings while Beat wears his emotions on his sleeves. The game even explicitly tells you this and once Nagi realizes Fret’s reasons, she’s a lot more nicer to him.

Part of Nagi’s whole thing is that she doesn’t like people who are fake. You can even see hints of how Nagi reacts to people when you compare how she treats Fret and Motoi, who she dismisses without a second thought, to Beat, who’s she’s very cordial with. She’s also the only one who can empathize with Buddy Rapids over his meltdown over water in the Ken Doi sidequest in Week 2, is pretty quick to call out bullshit like with the Purehearts, and more.

            Anonymous

There's also the fact that her being overly hasty to judge Fret as not worth her time is portrayed both by other characters and by the game as a flaw that she works to overcome and temper herself. Flawed characters are going to do things they shouldn't and act at cross-purposes to their goals. That's what flaws are.

I feel like people look at the original TWEWY with too much nostalgia goggles on. While it’s a great game, there are definitely a ton of flaws within it both narratively and mechanically. While NEO isn’t perfect either, it also does a lot of things right to the point that I consider them to be equal.

      Anonymous

I think the main thing about NEO is that it’s writing style will fly over some people’s head because of two things:
      1. It’s a sequel to a game that spelled out so much of its core themes and character development that you’d have to be blind as a bat in order to miss it so when NEO goes for a much more subtle approach, it’s not going to reach everyone.
      2. The game very much relies on you analyzing and replaying the game in order to get the most out of it and discover the depth for yourself in a genre in which most people will just beat the game and call it a day.
Hell, this even extends to the game’s combat: it’s incredibly deep, not just compared to the original, but a lot of Japanese ARPGs in general but it relies on you actually analyzing the mechanics despite how simple they appear to be at a glance.
One of the things I immediately noticed upon replaying the game is just how many details there are that requires you to have context from the end of the game and especially the secret reports before truly understanding them.
It made me realize that with the way Rindo’s time travelling is handled, where you see a bunch of supposedly inconsequential details that you understand only when you have to go back and connect them all, that the WHOLE game is written like that, which is most obviously seen with characters like Shoka, Susukichi, Fret, and Kanon once you reread it all.
These scenes with Kanon are a pretty good example where in the second timeline, she already knows about Fuya challenging the Ruinbringers whereas before she didn’t and it’s interesting when you consider the parasitic relationships the teams have with each other due to how they have formed an unspoken agreement where the top 3 teams (sans Ruinbringers) keep their footing by sending new teams to last place, which the Wicked Twisters screw up just by existing. It’s small but it really shows just how much thought the devs put into the characters’ individual mindsets.

        Anonymous

I find it really interesting how there’s a dichotomy between Shiba and Kanon in where there are actually a lot of similarities between the two. Both of them are social butterflies and are very charismatic, for example, and they both show their anger through their smiles, something that becomes really apparent when Kanon ends up possessed by Shiba’s Dissonance. Someone else also brought up to me how Shiba’s "team and team leader" game format makes the team leaders feel isolated probably in the same way he does in his own position, and is in a way forcing that on the players as he tortures them. None of this at all changes that Kanon resents Shiba more than probably every other character, but it does make me curious how she would react if ever faced with Shiba personally (beyond just more resentment probably).

Newbie here. Should I worry about food and clothes? Just playing on Normal for my first playthrough.

I honestly just pick up random shit for the party to eat here and there on my way to quest markers. Usually something that gives Style points. Same thing with gear. Very little minmaxing. Not consistent with either.

Seems OK so far. Got some sort of sword+ice beam+ice pin projectile combo going on that's been carrying me

On normal mode, you dont have to worry about the equipment of food boost. I rarely bought clothes and rarely ate food on hard mode(as a self imposed challenge) and I didn't see much of a difference, and I suck at this game.

But food boost are pretty muc just this games way of grinding. If you chain some battles you can easily double your stats with it.

      Anonymous

I recommend switching between the difficulties because difficulty in TWEWY isn’t like other games and it acts more like Diablo where difficulty is just as much about drop rate and drop pool as the actual effect on enemy stats.

      Anonymous

Early game threads are negligible at best. Food you should start on early, since later Threads have high Style requirements that can be a pain to grind out if you haven't been eating enough.
Mid-late game Threads are great, but some of them require certain VIP ranks to unlock, which means you'll probably end up buying the weak Threads anyway. But it's easier to make money late game so it doesn't take as much to unlock.

He's saying "ri-da-" in English, and "translating" foreign words in Japanese as the exact same word doesn't usually carry the same connotation. I'd have just used "queen" and toned down the meterosexual speak from the Beauties, but at least try to even consider the actual Japanese being spoken and the context around everything instead of just "more literal = more better."

        Anonymous

Yeah, it's called "loanword" and can be selected from any random language. Are you also going to have some batshit explanation of why you shouldn't translate arbeit used in japanese as "part time job" because it's a german load word that just means work and wouldn't "carry the same connotation"?

I'm almost finished with my dripless run and I gotta say that Wolves and Scorpions are easily the biggest homosexuals. Wolves run all over the place and split up making it insanely hard to CC them all down if you aren't fast. Scorpions are absolute tanks with infinite range and poison. I've been sniped by their tails more time than I can fricking count.

I found scorpions and wolves easy to deal with if you have pins to knock them back like Massive Hit and Gale Force. Sistah Subwoofer in particular is a god-send.

I'm at Mr. Mew in my dripless run, and I only got close to winning once. Running freeze dynamite darts, firestorm to stunlock in them all in it if I can get them bunched up, and poison bomb to hit them all then.

Finally getting this fricking scorpion was satisfying after how many times he one-shot me though. The big pincers have a big collision box and it's all over if you get anywhere near his face since there's no direction to dodge the incoming swipe, so I figured out you have to keep strafing and stay on his side at all times.

I scammed out that boss scorpion hard on my run. After dying 10 times, I switching things up and got to him with 100% groove and started the fight off with a stone mashup. From there I was able to chain a bunch of groove back to 100% with the stone mashup and the water melee pin and land a water mashup that killed the fricking thing before it even got a chance to move. Mr. Mew was also kinda AIDS with only 3 players. The second Mew fight was way more manageable.

          >He seemed more angry that he was used than that he destroyed an entire population center full of innocent souls and then tortured people for a loop of dozens of games in an unwinnable scenario so he could line up yet another city to be wiped out.
You’d be angry too if you found out that you were made to be a puppet that danced on the orders of someone else. The actual situation that led to Shiba overthrowing the previous Conductor is implied to be seen as him “saving” the Shinjuku Reapers (because they thought the Conductor was the one who wanted the Inversion) and by the time they realized that was not the case and that Shiba himself was most likely responsible, they couldn’t bring themselves to break up the last thread they had to their hometown. This is a topic that could be an entire analysis in and of itself, but Ayano and Susukichi in particular both could never fit in properly in Shibuya, and so they clung to the last vestiges of familiarity they had. And with the Reaper job description requiring Reapers to be uncaring to those below them, it was easy enough for them to blow off and subsequently enable Shiba into becoming worse and worse, while distancing themselves from him emotionally.
And it’s not like Shiba got out of this with no losses. He lost multiple members of his found family (Ayano and Susukichi to Erasure, Shoka due to her not wanting to be a Reaper anymore, several countless Reapers) and has to work hard to make up for the mess he contributes towards, which he vows to take responsibility for.

            >Ayano
Oh frick yeah I almost forgot, he talked her into poisoning her own mind with Plague Noise LEADING to her being erased.
Not to mention Uzuki said that during his takeover he erased any of the Shibuya reapers that stepped out of line to the point that she said they were pretty much endangered in their own city.
Listen I understand why the reapers fell in line, authority and power. But even the guy who saw what he was doing and got the frick out received a bigger dressing down than Shiba did by the other reapers.
            >and has to work hard to make up for the mess he contributes towards
How do you even take responsibility for a purge of this level? I dont want to talk about the Composer of Shinjuku hes just needless sequel bait and an intentional knockoff of Joshua pre TWEWY so until we get more media with him hes a non entity, but again it just doesnt sit well with me. Again I have to say that Kitaniji from the first game had more grounds to be allowed to live but got purged for his actions, fricking Motoi was treated more harshly for internet plagiarism and being a scumbag, Shiba getting a slap on the wrist soured the entire narrative to such an extent the whole game is brought down by it in my eyes.

              Anonymous

              >he talked her into poisoning her own mind with Plague Noise LEADING to her being erased.
Shiba didn’t do jackshit on his end. He told Ayano to make Shoka consider what her allegiances were and Ayano got the idea to take Plague Noise upon herself because she was desperate to bring back Shoka since she knew that no matter what she did, Shoka was setting herself up for Erasure due to how stray Shinjuku Reapers get Erased at the end of the week due to their rules and it’s implied that not even Shiba can overrun them.
              >How do you even take responsibility for a purge of this level?
Neku says that the souls of Shinjuku are still there, albeit in the form of stray thoughts, and that Shinjuku is trapped in a limbo of some sorts. Given how planes/soul/imagination are described as being an exact science (and similar to data according to Kaie), it’s not hard to imagine Shiba using his Dissonance abilities to piece things back together.
              >fricking Motoi was treated more harshly for internet plagiarism and being a scumbag
Except even Rindo recognized that he’s just a flawed dude at the end of it all and even gave him a second chance.

I think ultimately what this boils down to is what we think is considered forgivable with an excuse of impaired mental faculties on the line.
From my understanding Shiba wasnt so much overridden as he had his worst traits amplified. So no, I understand what we see isn't the 'real' Shiba but how many lines do you get to cross and still be allowed to function in your office?
Thats something that's down to personal taste and I get that. I just feel that them trying to make it something he can walk back after all the damage he did is just too much for me to swallow.

TWEWY’s morality is a lot more gray due to how people can just walk back from the dead. I mean, Uzuki and Kariya erased Rhyme in cold blood under orders and Beat holds no grudge due to his own experiences as a Reaper, not to mention that untold countless they have Erased. I think it all just boils down to how you view the way the characters react towards a corrupt afterlife.

Some of it is also that Reapers and Angels fundamentally don't operate on human morality. They're running a deathgame for people's souls and entire cities get blown up because a Composer gets bored and thinks everyone who lives there sucks.

Shiba gets convinced by his friends and associates that Kubo has been puppeting him for years, and once he realizes this and is free of Kubo's control he does everything in his power to save Shibuya, then abdicates his position to go back to Shinjuku and fix what he can there. Kubo used him, same as Kubo used everyone around him, and it was only Haz nuking Kubo from every timeline that even began to restore normalcy. Meanwhile, Xehanort is a wienermonger to his dying breath but his college roommate's ghost (who Xehanort got killed) shows up and says 'don't worry he's chill' before they fly off to heaven. Big agree, I mean it's either him or Shoka of course. In a cast where just a few too many reapers have their personalities based around gimmicks, Hishima stood out to me as a really grounded straight man and I loved every interaction with him, especially when he finally nut up and told his friend to check his shit

He was in a lose/lose situation, Joshua was ready to see the city destroyed one way or another, be it physically or having its soul ripped out.
Essentially the whole thing was Joshua ready to flip the board because he was miserable and Megs was trying to run damage control the only wah he knew how and could get the Composer to agree with.

Nominally he wants Joshua's job as Shibuya's composer. Mostly I think he doesn't have an end goal beyond experimentation and furthering his understanding, while welcoming the fact that the easiest way to get access to information is to be incredibly powerful. His control over his vibe and level of familiarity with other timelines already exceeds what should be possible for someone not an Angel

      Anonymous

I think ultimately Sho just wants control. He didn't want to be a game master because thats under the Composer so hes angling to take that seat.
I don't know how much he knows about Angels but I think he has an inkling after Hanekomas assistance so if he ever does take the seat he may be trying to aim even higher for the top of the heap so to speak.

The switch version is weird because it obviously couldn't do the double-screen gimmick, so it honestly plays much closer to NEO. It also has some extra content that's semi-important for understanding the shit in NEO.
