Never have I been filtered so hard, multiple times by a game.

Never have I been filtered so hard, multiple times by a game. This is my third attempt at getting into the game and I think I finally understand it’s appeal. I was definitely bad at the game, but finding the right weapon was definitely the key. I have a couple questions if some hunter bros can help me, I tried asking in the general but got called a gay shill lol.
First should I be doing all the investigations as I go? I’m only at the rotten vale so far, should I just continue with story? Are guard points something I should be trying to learn right now (I understand what they are, but I don’t think I’m good enough with my weapon to time that)? Should I be doing something with my Palico? I gave him a rathian set of gear and just let him do his thing. I’m using the charge blade weapon if it matters. Any tips broad or specific very welcome, starting to really have fun with this game now that I’m not TOTAL dogshit.

Another quick question, is the multiplayer worth getting a ps plus subscription?

Hope you're at least playing on ps4 pro or ps5.
Just proceed through the story and quests.
Use investigations to farm for gear you like or when you're stonewalled.

Unironically better than playing at 240p

Keep at it bro, world was my first entry into the series and it’s a great way to kill time for sure, also I’m going to assume you’re using the charge blade right? If so guard points are a great way to get a swift counter attack off with your axe for an easy knockdown. Secondly your Palio can do tons of things I found the vigorwasp was very useful when learning the game because when you level it up your cat will come to you to heal in clutch situations for example when you’re stunned on low hp. Thirdly I think investigations are part of the story iirc, if you get stonewalled go farm for some upgrades and come back at a later time. Hope you find this useful it’s been a while since I last played, happy hunts anon

Ok ty, I was curious if the vigorwasp was good to keep using, it’s definitely been helpful so far.

Lance has been my main ever since Tri. Counters feel so good, and with World's super counter you can be right next to the monster the entire fight and tank literally any attack - even the 1hko ones with the right setup. Hammer is great too though.

Investigations are randomly generated as you pick up tracks/monster drops/etc. You can't ever finish them all because you'll just get more. They're useful for getting specific items for specific monsters, but otherwise you can ignore them.

Oh shit, I killed so many rathians because I thought the investigations were like side quests. But they’re more so you can farm specific monsters for more rewards?

        Anonymous

Right. Different monster drops have different rarity tiers, so the investigation rewards will roll from each tier (bronze / silver / gold) and give you corresponding rewards. It's useful if you're grinding towards an armor set/weapon.

Cool I like that system. So how do you get new investigations? I’ve seen them pop up as I’m out hunting but I’m not sure what specifically triggers them. I assume it’s general stuff like spotting, killing, tracking during expeditions?

Not him but breaking monster parts, picking up footprints, etc. Eventually you'll just ignore trying to get them because they'll just keep popping up by simply playing the game.

investigations are a complete waste of time until you unlock tempered monsters. don't worry too much about your palico, but you can unlock different abilities for it by doing the cat sidequests. it's default vigorwasp ability is probably good for you though.

Is there something wrong I'm doing with LS? I build up meter, use spirit slashes and build up and then use Helm Breaker and 9 times out of 10 the second slash misses even when the monster is stunned.

I switched over to Switchaxe and it feels like I'm doing so much more damage.

It’s funny you say that, my first time getting filtered I was using the long sword lol. I definitely didn’t understand that weapon, this charge blade weapon is great though.

I mainly just picked it because it's the weapon I used the most in FU. I don't remember if it was any good back then either, I just liked the mobility.

        >my first time getting filtered I was using the long sword
Literally me, then I switched to dual blades and found the whole game easy. Demon dodge is amazing.

it also made odogaron my favourite monster, because despite him being one of the easiest, dodging around while he's having an autism fit all over the place made it look and feel like a high speed dance

    >investigations
Your choice. Investigations are good if you want materials and money. If you wsnt to build a specific weapon/armor, it's better to dodo investigations than normal quests
    >Rotten vale
    Your choice
    >guard point
Yes but don't try too hard. Mhw is my first game but I never had a hard time learning any weapon so I'm fine with it but if you're having a hard time, then try to get used to other aspects of the CB first. Everyone has their own pace.
    >palico
Maybe. Try giving it weapons that deal paralysis or sleep. It will help a lot.

I consider the CB to be ambitious if you're new. There are simpler and effective weapons (albeit maybe not as interesting), but if you like the weapon, I suggest watching some videos about how to maximize its potential, and practice doing all the tricks that maximize DPS until it becomes natural. Guard points are definitely important as they will keep you alive in sticky situations, but you do need to predict what the monster is about to do and get a feel for which movements will need a time adjustment so that the guard point is active when the monster hits you. Also, if your blade is charged, the guard point does a free impact hit which if done to the monster's head could result in something like an interrupted charge. It is fun to watch a monster try to yeet you and then gets his ass floored because he bonked into your shield and you immediately get to go to town on his face.

A useful guard point is after the round slash. You will want to use that move often as it does quite a bit of damage in sword mode compared to the other attacks. If you think the monster is about to hit you before you'll get a chance to roll, let the animation play out and hold the guard button so you'll guard right after. That will give you some extra protection. The other ones I can think of off the top of my head happen during the weapon transformation and are fairly situational as it's often better to guard and stay in whatever mode you're in than it is to be transforming constantly.

If you haven't figured it out yet, you should be unloading phials as often as you can. Use sword mode when on the defensive or when charging phials, then dump them into your axe and unload them on the monster until you're out. Transform back when you can, rinse and repeat.

    Good luck CB bro.

Charge blade is probably the hardest weapon to just pick up since half of it is proper use of guard points unless you just wanna savage axe mode unga bunga or saed spam. To really master it you need to know the monsters tells for their moves though so practice with the weapon itself wont be enough. It will be challenging buts damn satisfying when you can weave guard points into your combos and absolutely shit on everything easily. Good luck anon.

Yeah I have a pretty solid grasp on the weapon except for the charge points, I understand the concept but like you said, the rest will probably come from hunting experience/learning the monsters.
Is the dear lutemis a good early weapon? Not really sure what phials and stuff are good yet

Yeah the rathian weapon is great all throughout the game actually. As for phials the short answer is just stick with impact weapons since they are immensely op but later on with decorations elemental is viable with proper sets.

check out a video guide for your weapon class, then practice on the dummy/easy large monsters until you are more comfortable. i like the game, but it does a bad job teaching you about your weapon and the importance of certain moves.
