Most people consider the second game to be the best in the franchise. It is a masterpiece by all accounts, including on a technical level at the time on the PS2 with full use of Sony's face texture technology.

Sh1 is a much better horror game and has a better story. Dialogue is more eerie not bloated. Puzzles are better and the setting is actually novel. I much prefer the sound design on it too as it is grittier. It’s a horror masterpiece.

Sh2 is a great spooky melodrama. Just great. Doesn’t add much more to the series beyond graphics and soundtrack. Step down in monsters, horror and characters. The problem is it’s a hollow regurgitation of sh1. It’s got nice atmosphere, but it eventually and quickly feels rather quiet and somber as opposed to unpredictable and dreadful. Sure, I know that was the direction for sh2, but the depressive take on it is nice but not anything to rave about. It’s not the first game to take on serious themes lol, nothing mind blowing about it

All in all Sh2 is an overpraised, derivative melodrama. Doesn’t expand that much from the original. It’s just praised because of nostalgia and it being one of the first notable releases on the ps2. The average person who loves it always sounds like a depressive homosexual who used this game as an outlet so go figure. I enjoyed it a lot, but it’s simply not the masterpiece people claim it to be. Not including graphic disparities, Sh1 did everything sh2 but better.

It’s also on my backlog. I’m probably just gonna play it on the PS2 since I already have the game on my softmodded PS2’s hard drive, and I don’t really mind having another excuse to play PS2. If you mean PCSX2 when you say PS2 then you might as well set up the Enhanced Edition.

I would say at this point just play the PC version with enhanced mods. The PS2 version still has a few things I don't think mods have entirely fixed; however, I think at this point must stuff has been taken care of where the PC version is arguably the better choice. The only thing better would be a CRT with actual hardware just for the "authentic" experience but honestly just stick with the PC version.

PC version for sure, PCSX2 is dogwater.

      Anonymous

      It's the opposite, actually.

Enhanced Edition doesn't fix stuff such as the 30 FPS FMVs, bad audio mixing, and compressed audio quality (they reencoded ontop of the original audio files for the port). It also has carryovers from the Xbox version such as the cone flashlight that shows too much of the game, and the gamma/brightness settings are all kinds of fricked on PC, requiring you to do a lot of tweaking.

The current dev version of PCSX2 (1.7+) doesn't have any known issues with SH2 emulation. The only substantial thing I see on the wiki is mentions of a menu glitch that occurs if you use save states, but you should never use save states to begin with.

        Anonymous

Oh also, regardless of whichever way you decide to play the game on PC, you should be playing at 4:3 and 1x PS2 native resolution. The game looks terrible at higher resolutions and the fog effects are less convincing since Enhanced Edition also applies a degraining filter to make the fog look more "flat".

        Anonymous

Don't listen to this anon, he doesn't even know that the flashlight issue was already fixed years ago to act just like the PS2 flashlight. See here:

The Enhanced Edition on PC is THE definitive edition of SH2 to play. It even fixes bugs that plague all of the console versions. And compared to PCSX2, it has properly scaled cutscenes in original 4:3 compositions that do not show frozen characters out of frame, softer shadows, restored fog effects, per-pixel lighting, etc. You can check the comparison screenshots here:

All of the things that you've mentioned about Enhanced Edition "doing better" are just denoising and inaccuracies to original game's visual style. And EE still doesn't do anything about the rencoded audio and FMVs. You shouldn't be playing SH2 in widescreen anyways, as outlined in the other post, so the fanfic recomposition of cutscenes is actually a bad thing that detracts from the original vision of the game.

            >All of the things that you've mentioned about Enhanced Edition "doing better" are just denoising and inaccuracies to original game's visual style.
Blurriness is not a visual style. Fixing bugged shadows is not denoising.
            >And EE still doesn't do anything about the rencoded audio
I don't know where you got that from, but audio is not re-encoded. From the doc:
            >Silent Hill 2: Enhanced Edition uses extracted, lossless audio arrangements from the PlayStation 2 version. All audio is saved as pre-recorded files. Dialogue and background music are saved as stereo. Sound effects are saved as mono. DSOAL enables HRTF (binaural audio) for the game, which renders stereo 3D positional audio for the sound effects to create a more immersive experience.

            >and FMVs.
FMVs are in 30fps because the game is not fully compatible with 60fps yet, in fact you are recommended to play it in 30fps even with the Enhanced Edition since going higher introduces some bugs. For someone so invested in m-muh vision you shouldn't b***h about 30fps FMVs.
            >You shouldn't be playing SH2 in widescreen anyways, as outlined in the other post, so the fanfic recomposition of cutscenes is actually a bad thing that detracts from the original vision of the game.
You are not forced to play in widescreen since it supports every resolution and aspect ratio known to man, but it's there for those who want to do it.

              >Fixing bugged shadows is not denoising
The shadows were never bugged, again, just modders fixing shit that never needed to be fixed.
              >I don't know where you got that from, but audio is not re-encoded. From the doc:
So you're saying... EE changes the audio mix... just as I said... Gotcha.
              >You are not forced to play in widescreen since it supports every resolution and aspect ratio known to man, but it's there for those who want to do it.
You aren't, but at the same time, don't fix what isn't broken. If you're a drooling moron and you hate black bars, then yeah, I guess stick to EE if you want more FOV to make the game easier and watch inaccurate cutscenes.

In the end it comes down to:
              >Play the original game the way it was released that has no known issues
              or
              >Play the PC port that has been fan-patched and still has known issues
If you pick the latter, you're just dumb, or someone who can't deal with playing a game at its original resolution and aspect ratio.

                Anonymous

                >I never said the game was blurry.
That's what you get for playing in the original res. Just saying it's a technical limitation, not a visual style that can be broken.
                >The shadows were never bugged, again, just modders fixing shit that never needed to be fixed.
They are unless you play in software mode on PCSX2. Learn the difference between hard and soft shadows and how they work on the original PS2.
                https://enhanced.townofsilenthill.com/SH2/compare.htm#softShadows
                >So you're saying... EE changes the audio mix... just as I said... Gotcha.
If you think replacing audio in the PC port with high fidelity audio files from the PS2 original is changing the audio mix, then sure, it changes the audio mix. Weird thing to complain about if you're all for preserving the original vision, though.

                >make the game easier
It's not an action game and the combat is already braindead easy without having to go widescreen. If you think that's why people go wider, you're unironically moronic.
                >inaccurate cutscenes
I don't see the issue here. Either play it in 4:3 with all the rest of the bells and whistles that come with EE or in widescreen with properly scaled cutscenes that match the 4:3 versions.
                >Play the original game the way it was released that has no known issues
If you wanted to play the original game the way it was released, you would hook up a PS2 to your CRT like some of the other anons are doing in this thread, not run the game on a reverse engineered emulator coded by fans that can't even play FMVs properly unless in software mode.
                https://wiki.pcsx2.net/Silent_Hill_2#FMV_freeze
                >Play the PC port that has been fan-patched and still has known issues
Like what? The aforementioned flashlight bug which was fixed 3 years and 5 patches ago? Clearly you haven't kept up with EE's development. Not that you should, but you might want to keep your mouth shut if you don't know what you're talking about.

Silent Hill 2 looks good in widescreen and all, but 4:3 is the original vision and I prefer it over a pan-and-scan cropped and tweaked 16:9 image.
Widescreen works best when it adds more to the image, rather than subtracts from the image, which is why IMAX versions of films are usually better than the standard CinemaScope versions.

Not him but I'm pretty sure the only difference visually between Xbox and PS2 is the flashlight effects. The framerate thing is kind of a half-truth, the Xbox version has a weird microstutter that isn't present in the original game, but it's fairly infrequent. It's certainty still better than the black-label PS2 version at least. Red-label is still king though.

When I saw those scenes at the end of Jacob's Ladder I realized that most of the otherworld is basically taken from that movie

I'd recommend Blue Velvet as well. Lynch's work is much deeper than any of the SH games, especially on a spiritual level. Once you reach a point where you understand what he's doing (not trying to be pretentious but the sad truth is many people won't) they're some of the most genuine works of art in any medium. Lynch's work is incredible, and horrifying, once you understand his process and that many of his ideas and explored themes are literally coming from another place. He's not just being a weirdo memelord when he talks about those kinds of things. Many of us unconsciously do it to some degree, Lynch very consciously does it with intense focus and clarity. I appreciate other works that take inspiration from Lynch but they all lack the authenticity and depth, Silent Hill included.

The original PC port FMVs are reencoded just like the game's audio, and the only way to "fix" them with EE is to replace them with shitty upscaled and interpolated cutscenes. Literally the worst thing about EE is that there's no way to achieve the original PS2 experience because the devs are so up their own asses that they think their remastered garbage is superior to the original game. and see that both the audio and the FMV enhancement packs are optional. You just can't stop getting BTFO, can you? Maybe you should have taken the advice of that other anon and kept your mouth shut if you didn't know what you were talking about. It's too late now.

Yeah and if you turn them off you're just stuck with the original PC port FMVs and non-remasted audio, which is all still garbage. You either accept the shitty PC port stuff, or you gargle EE's wiener and accept their fanfic remaster.

No, you either install EE with the audio from the PS2 version for a modern experience or hook up your console to a CRT for the purist experience. The shitty choice is the middle ground emu route which can't do either properly.

                >No, you either install EE with the audio from the PS2 version
                *remastered and remixed by EE
                >or hook up your console to a CRT for the purist experience.
                This is good too.
                >The shitty choice is the middle ground emu route which can't do either properly.
You're painting it as a middle ground option because in your mind EE is the definitive version (because you're the dev/spammer). In reality, emulation is the closest thing anyone without real hardware is going to get to playing the ACTUAL definitive version of SH2. The game has no known issues on the emulator when configured correctly, certainly less than your mod. If you have real hardware, then you DEFINITELY should never touch the PC port under any circumstances. You would be a gigamoron if you did so.

Want to do a second playthrough because you're curious what a fan recreation of SH2 with widescreen composition would look like? Knock yourself out, install EE, eat your heart out. But don't ever recommend it as a first experience to people like OP and pretend like you're a true Silent Hill fan.

                >*remastered and remixed by EE
Copying and pasting files from the PS2 version is not remastering or remixing.
                >This is good too.
                Always has been.
                >emulation is the closest thing anyone without real hardware is going to get to playing the ACTUAL definitive version of SH2. The game has no known issues on the emulator when configured correctly, certainly less than your mod.
Again, you are basing your argument on outdated information from years ago. You could configure the PC version to play in 4:3 and with the base assets, too, which would get rid of modern additions like widescreen resolutions for current monitors, upscaled images and upscaled FMV. The flashlight, the shadows and the fog were all fixed to be like their PS2 counterparts. There's literally no reason to gimp yourself just to run it under emulation.
                >you're curious what a fan recreation of SH2 with widescreen composition would look like? Knock yourself out, install EE, eat your heart out.
This is good too, for those who want a modern experience like I said.
                >pretend like you're a true Silent Hill fan
Nobody would work on a mod like this if they weren't a Silent Hill fan. Do you regularly work on things you don't truly like for this long?
