NEW DECK SCREEN ANNOUNCED

>The new screen, which FX Technology is calling DeckHD, jumps to 1920 x 1200 resolution and claims 95% coverage of the sRGB color gamut. It will maintain the same 400 nits of claimed brightness and a 60 Hz refresh rate, which mean when it comes to comparing the Steam Deck vs. Asus ROG Ally, the latter will still be brighter and offer a faster 120 Hz refresh rate.

It's because no one cares. The switch is better.

It's WUXGA, you can find at least a few in any PC store, but they're generally business monitors. There's usually a crappy cheaper one and then something more expensive, probably Eizo or a brand like that. But very rare to find anything past 75hz.

why do people keep trying to put these horribly high resolution on small screens

You keep it closer to your face than a monitor.

My phone is 4k 90hz. Don't see the issue.

Don't like it. Don't buy it.

Your phone downscales the resolution to keep the framerates up, if even the bare minimum Android UI isn't able to render at 4K, what do you think happens to any reasonably demanding game?

Text looks pretty great on high ppi screens. But i agree, it doesn't make sense when it comes to games.

      Because they're portable.

I have a Deck and love it but this is moronic. Nobody is disassembling their Deck that far to swap out the screen. Also SteamOS 3.5 is going to change the default screen calibration anyway. It's already like that in the testing channel. It looks a lot better now.

Bro. You need to take literally everything out including the middle metal plate. It's a pain in the dick.

That's just dumb. Sure, 1920x1200 is great and I'm using a monitor like that right now, but the deck is simply too weak to run anything but indie platformers at that resolution.

    Seems terrible

Deck can barely do 40-60 fps on 800p. Performance will be bad on this.

why would you get this? do you want to run games at an even lower frame rate?

    > Bigger resolution
Missing the point entirely. The system's isn't fast enough to support games at 1200p
    > inb4 just play at lower res
But that will make the game look blurry. Playing natively at 800p on the 800p screen is how it should be - no upscaling, perfect sharpness.
New screens should instead keep the 1280x800 resolution but improve literally everything else. The colors, for instance, are completely atrocious.

Yes. The Switch has one, why can't they Deck?

One of the deck devs claimed that one issue is finding one that can do variable refresh rate.

        https://www.gizchina.com/2020/11/07/lg-admits-that-oled-tvs-will-have-problems-with-variable-refresh-rate-vrr-below-120-hz/

I don't know how possible they are to make just they had trouble finding premade handheld screens that could and with profit margins as is they're not eager to manufacture custom screens.

Don't the new WOLED 1440p monitors do VRR well at low frequencies?

An iphone 5? I took that apart to change a cracked screen.

It's definitely more designed to be taken apart than any iphone. They uploaded a video that shows you how to open it up. It includes a warning not to do it, but they're required to include that to avoid getting sued
