>games journalists, redditors, normies, and people that never played previous entries flock to new entry to say how great it is

What is this phenomenon? I've seen it with several franchises now, pic related just being the most recent example.

You must be a kid or new to vidya. It's called "reaching a wider audience". They either make the next game in the franchise easier by taking away things that made it hard or adding things that make it way easier for everyone else. Look at all the shit in Elden Ring that isn't in the souls games: summoned AI companions, a 2:1 advantage over invaders, mounted combat, rune arcs, etc. The game is easier by far, so many more people played it than past games.

                Anonymous

It gives the enemy more depth and is an ability unique to this enemy. How does it make the game worse? This is a completely fair and justifiable use of a shockwave and you're weirdly crying about it.

                Anonymous

                >ability unique to this enemy
No, it's not, lots of enemies do this.
                >How does it make the game worse?
Because it adds no value to the game and makes hitboxes functionally imprecise and it clashes with the visual information the game gives you as an aid to avoid attacks.

It adds additional challenge because a big slow predictable enemy can still frick you if you get caught in his aoe.

                >aoe
I wouldn't even be mad if they at least gave the aoe a visual effect so you could see how big it is, but because there's no visual counterpart to the shockwave it just makes it seem like a janky hitbox.

                >Because it adds no value to the game

No the hitbox is exactly precise and anybody with a brain can understand what's happening. It's not clashing with any visual information. Everything about this specific character's bulky design, lumbering movements, heavy hammer weapon, and slow powerful attack is conveying information before you even attack it. It shouldn't come as a surprise the player staggers if they're in close range of getting slammed, or if it catches them off guard they should immediately recognize in that moment what happened and learn to fight against it. If anyone is confused between being splattered on the ground and dying vs a little stagger animation they're fricking stupid.

                Anonymous

Why not include a visual element to match the hitbox like literally every other attack in the game? The fact that there isn't one makes it look like an accident not an intentional feature.

In DS 2 some attacks have a tremor mechanic similar to monster hunter that affects a certain radius outside of the actual hitbox. If the player got hit by the tremor, the animation becomes different and movement is severely reduced. Iirc, the ogre can do this with his falling-on-his-back attack as well.

objectively wrong, ER has the best hitboxes in the series

ER has a much larger list of enemies than any From game before it, and a much larger list of enemies than any open world game
            from DS1 look better
by what metric? the design? the graphics? personally I think most armor set are really well designed although I wish the colours were more saturated
            >no effort on balancing things so they just let everything be cheesable
cheese was always in the series and you haven't substantiated why ER isn't balanced
            >same assets and animations from the past games, the new ones they created are all terrible animu shit
how is it a "massive step back" from prior entries if they are the same as prior entries? you are not making any sense. and the new ones are very good and they fit perfectly the sort of power levels at play that the game tries to convey.
            >terrible level designed that just repeats itself and just put enemies in ambush to create difficulty instead of making good areas where the enemies movesets would be satisfying to dodge/learn/parry
that isn't true at all and it describes some of the prior entries more than it describes ER, since in many of the previous games the challenge doesn't come as much from the enemy's moveset but from the fact that you fight the enemies on narrow corridors and the like. ER has some of the best designed levels in the whole series, Stormveil and Leyndell mog the entirety of Ds3 and Ds2 by themselves.

Only if you take yourself as the base costumer of how a game should designed, casual pandering is not a sure way to lessen the quality of a game, its only often done like that.

            Anonymous

The thing is that they added toolkits instead of bettering the game. For example you don't need to make a good feint like the Dancer boss uses if you gave every player a free chance to heal (summons) and ranged attacks (arts)

considering i have essentially been playing the same combat for a decade with from soft games, i dont think "bettering the game" has been too high in their focus beyond their more experimental side titles like BB or Sekiro. they know what works, what people expect and it has obviously paid off

Of course it paid off, all the people the other games alienated got a free get out of jail card and had all the backing of the original costumer base. It was a genius market decision and the only people that got hurt were the ones that truly liked the effort and polish from did sometimes. Of course they were blind to not see how little fricks fromsoft actually gives to maintaining quality (lost izalith, DS2 base game, and etc)

I've played every Souls game and enjoyed Elden Ring

      Anonymous

you can still enjoy something and recognise faults with it. the problem i have with elden ring is that it has far too much potential to be a brilliant game but it's obvious a lot of focus were spent on things such as the open world instead of the stuff that make souls game actually brilliant.
ignoring the low hanging fruit of the sheer amount of reused enemies/mini bosses/regular enemies as mini bosses, the core narrative of the game just kind of sucks. if you take all the legacy dungeons out and stitch them together, you have a game far shorter than any other souls games. you are left with an empty world that doesn't reward you for exploring with actual content and it's clear that you are meant to be poking around to pad out your gametime by going through copy pasted tombs and caves trying to find smithing stones or another ash of war instead of having a fine tuned journey through the game.
the biggest joke about the game is that they release it with missing features and unfinished questlines. they were somehow super rushed finishing this game despite a prolonged dev cycle. they made a good game sure but will it ever be held in the same light as bloodborne or das1? absolutely not

        Anonymous

But the average player the game is aiming for isn't going to explore all the caves and see how many copy pasted enemies and layout there are. If they do they will be accompanied by a friend so they won't even care. Its designed to be a fast food item that you consume fast and don't think too much about it.

          Anonymous

despite reused enemies, i was actually shocked with how many of the dungeons were unique, conceptually, despite shared tile sets. There are plenty of straight forward ones, but I still remember exploring the unique ones with illusory walls, double bosses, etc months after release

            Anonymous

I really wished I could see the game that way, I remember things differently like that waterfall cave looking so amazing and ominous just to have a normal enemy as the boss doing less damage than a wolf.

Elden Ring ostensibly has everything a Dark Souls fan SHOULS want in a game. It has tons of weapons all with different attack styles and skills, it has tons of customizable power choices you can equip and swap, it has a lot of gear to fashion with, it has a big open world to explore, it has obscure lore and environmental storytelling to chew through, it has lots of bosses to fight, and it has some decently challenging encounters in it.

And yet, somehow none of that stuff actually elevates it. It never really comes together in a full harmony, it's like a band where every musician is pretty good on their own but they're all playing slightly different tempos and melodies so the whole song just sounds really harsh and tedious to get through and you don't really want to sit through it more than once. Even without the online component, DS1, 3, and yes even 2, and especially Bloodborne, are all tighter, more coherent and focused and thus enjoyable experiences that people are happy to replay.

And the funny part is, no one actually defends the game. 100% of the posts saying "lol i liek Elden Ring despite all that, I still play it all day I've replayed it 100 times" are just shitposts being contrarian for replies.

No I don't. If you insist though, it's a masterpiece because it's the best From game, better than your favourite game, and better than any Nintendo/Sony/Microshaft exclusive.

ER is generally outstanding apart from Mountain, Consecrated Snowfield, any catacomb dungeon and whenever something is reused. In the end it feels quite disappoint because Mountain and the snowfield area are back to back after an already massive slog, there are dungeons fricking everywhere and they feel so samey and so many enemy types are reused. Was it really that hard to differentiate the basic soldier types? Having them throw different things was a joke, they should have had different weapon types or something.

Elden Ring is a good game, but I hope the next Souls game goes back to the classic "linear" game design instead of open world. The levels in ER look pretty but it has too much copy and paste design instead of the hand tailored encounters in previous games. ER has mobs of enemies in the open world who serve no purpose but to act as filler, where as other games would reward you for fighting tough optional enemies.

        Anonymous

I wouldn't mind another open world, perhaps just not as expansive.
Smaller biomes with bigger legacy dungeons, less trashmobs and less tombs/graves/tunnels and whatnot.
Reward exploration with better stuff than runes.
I enjoyed exploring the world, I didn't enjoy HAVING to explore the world.

One of the aspect I dislike the most about the entries is the "read the guide or you'll miss stuff". In the earlier entries it's far more forgivable because the exploration isn't as time consuming. The world doesn't feel small but progressing through it doesn't feel like a chore.
Sekiro is my favorite in that aspect: you explore the world through every encounter, not because you're looking for runes/souls or crafting materials, or because there might be a hidden npc somewhere for some quests, but because you adapt your route to enemies and level design. It feels like playing.

I went with a templar-like build longsword and shield with a rapier, mace and flail with some faith spells and the initial talisman. You are right about changing the tools, some ranged options made the game enjoyable since the ranged enemies and positioning are sometimes a chore to get pass. The more I used the ranged options the less fun I had since I didn't have to learn anything and just spam at the back with the occasional healing.

Elden Ring is simply a passable game. I was impressed with it on a technical level, but as you play more it becomes less fun and enjoyable. I don't plan on replaying it, especially after playing Nioh. I think Elden Ring is tighter than its previous entries, the problem is just that you're never really on the same level of speed, as in the anticipation to reaction ratio isn't really in a good spot.

Not OP, but I hate it because it's open world garbage. I'm sick of open world garbage. I'm sick of series being raped by this meme and becoming worse because of it. If FromSoftware makes another Soulslike that isn't open world garbage now, I'll reel back on my hatred a bit, but this never happens. Once the open world garbage takes in, it sells like hotcakes and it's all open world garbage from that point forward.

I also hate it, because, like every other about to release or newly released open world garbage game, people go "THIS ONE IS FINALLY THE GOOD ONE", and it ends up having the exact same flaws that every other open world garbage game does.

Yes, and it's sad how the discord trannies have made it impossible to criticize now. In the end fighting so hard against them during that period has backfired hard since Elden Ring is a truly massive disappointment. I knew it was looking bad in the network test when webms people posted showed a game that played exactly the same as Dark Souls 3 instead of taking some risks like Bloodborne and Sekiro. The writing was on the wall then. The worst part? Now that it got 16 million sales we are never getting a Bloodborne or Sekiro ever again, From will never take a risk ever again.

I think our standards for games are way too high at this point.
I got the god of war reboot for free on ps+ and played it for 2 hours, it was 80% cutscenes and while the combat can be fun it's too sparse in between all the walking and talking. Assassin's creed is also boring in the same vein.

I was dissilusioned with ER but having a taste of the other action games out there put me into perspective how even then it's still massively superior in gameplay.
I just hoped Fromsoft had built up ER more like bloodborne in terms of combat, and finally brought back trick weapons since DS3 and sekiro skipped them over.

I could accept the mechanical and design issues (present in every From game in one form or another) if I actually liked the world, but ER's setting doesn't pull me in at all.
Going down the Siofra well for the first time blew my mind, until I found that the majority of it was just a big fields with the same enemy type. Nokron was cool, but seemed too video gamey in parts.
Seeing the giant insectoid skull alien in the subterranean river/ ruins was cool, but there's not much else to see or do down there. Maybe taken as a whole, where Nokron, Siofra the Lake of Rot and the area with the waterfall that takes you to Deeproot are all part of the same general "zone", it would be interesting, but things seem too disconnected and shallow.

I think ER has the same baseline level of quality as every From Soulsborne game since DeS has had (meaning that it's still a good game above 90% of the dogshit we're getting from any other dev/publisher nowadays) but it's still very flawed
It's ultimately a big open world DS3.5, I really wish things like the Sekiro parry or the BB rally/quickstep could've been properly brought forward and implemented (no rally being locked behind an endgame boss, requiring a consumable item, and generally being dogshit doesn't count) instead of falling back on so many of the older systems, especially considering how much faster they've been trying to make things without properly compensating the player because of this insane rat race mentality for keeping things "challenging" except it's being half-assed as evidenced by the multitude of buffs and changes in patches

The amount of times in ER that bosses just flat out stopped attacking me and had enemies just running into walls was laughable. I have 1k+ hours in BB and ER easily has the second best combat mechanics (which are the meat of the games) in all FROM ARPGs due to jumping, higher importance of R2s and WAs not being just meme gimmicks.
