There's a bunch of post-game content confirmed already, and the Japanese script has Culex saying that he's going to disappear until he masters the third dimension.

            >Nearly three decades after it was first released on Super Nintendo — and despite a handsome remake for Switch, with completely redone visuals and rerecorded music — there’s still something strangely, but not unpleasantly, off about Super Mario RPG.

            >Mario looks all squat and cross-eyed; in fact, the whole Mushroom Kingdom and all its denizens have a sort of squashed, funhouse-mirror look, as if folding them into an isometric perspective has flattened them all out. Early in the game, Bowser’s castle gets run through by a giant, skyscraper-sized talking sword; when did you ever see a sword in a Mario game? Not long after, a Toad makes a joke about forgetting his bazooka at home. His what? Mario’s house is a wobbly, clapboard shack. Mario has a house. It’s all kinds of wrong.

Thanks anon. I felt willing to believe because they kept "Fungah! Foiled again!" but the one thing I can agree with these tranny hacks on is that this all feels like it should be impossible.

I was positive they would ruin the jumping toad on the bed animation and that's perfectly recreated, improved even. So many things could have gone wrong and yet here it is without any kind of actual blemish. What a world.

Maybe they were trying to make him say "Fungool", the Italian American slang for the profane Italian expression "Vafanculo" but it got mangled going from Italian, to Italian American, to Japanese.

Google reads the Japanese as "Fungya," which doesn't really clarify anything.

I really wanna know what the deal is with the localization one day, because the English dialog is near 1:1 with the original (only spotted like two differences that aren't ALL-CAPS removals, a tiny one in Exor's speech and the other being that the "hitched" kid now wants to be a "sidekick" which is prob a Yellow/Blue Toad reference), yet the names flip from strangely English-faithful (Kero Sewers seemed like a nobrainer) to shockingly Japanese-faithful (who dafuq thought Frogfucius needed fixing). It's like the translators played tug-o-war. Then again, maybe the original game was like that too, and we don't know it because it's the baseline from our perspective. Other languages so far seem freer to be a little closer to the Japanese because they aren't as rooted in nostalgia. It just feels like this wouldn't have been the localization we got had SMRPG been re-released at the same time as the Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger enhanced ports. Or the copyright nightmare was enough of a hellscape that it forced them to play it safe, but if that's the case, I'd still expect the opposite to have happened, where the dialog got more attention but the names had to stay the same due to trademark and such. Very strange situation to ponder about.

Might be a little early to tell, but the Monster List from what we see looks really good. It looks like psychopaths will be getting the most retranslation attention, it almost feels like whoever did them was a separate being from the purist who kept the NPC dialog mostly the same. Though some parts of the Japanese text seem slightly rewritten, so for all we know, those references got reworked.

It's over. The one accurate translator lost the fight and got relegated to psychopaths and Culex, all because Tomato dared to make two popular articles challenging the sacred cow but said "that's pretty good" to virtually everything else. They probably just looked around the wiki for scraps of info, so we MIGHT see minor things like the Final Fantasy references restored to Topper questions, but I wouldn't bank on too many mistranslations being fixed if Belome and the fricking "haha you stepped in poop remember the gross-out 90's" girl are still there. They couldn't even be assed to change Bowser's "Mwa ha ha" laugh to his normal "Gra ha ha" one. The age of new translation fighting the old has ended; it is now the age where the nostalgic status quo is the norm. The last chance for redemption is if the American and British English localizations are different, but that is a long shot. It is too late for Super Mario RPG, Ted Woolsey's untouchable.
Who THE FUCK did they outsource the remake to, and why are they keeping it a secret bigger than Kevin Afghani?!

Have you SEEN the pixel remasters? Square Enix is done doing major fixes to their old translations. FFIII has a new script because it wasn't done in 2D officially yet, that's it. FFIV reverted back to the crummy GBA script virtually verbatim after the PSP one basically fixed everything. SNES/GBA kiddies are boomers now with kids of their own, they don't want to think hard on their media, give mommy and daddy their soft nostalgia for the 90's/00's baby inside them.

I've never played FFVI. I like to save some retro classics for the future so I never run out of good games to experience, and it's always been one of those. Which version should I play? It sounds like Slattery's script is the way to go, because I'm a firm believer in being as faithful to what the people who actually made the game wrote as possible.

The GBA script port seems like a good option if you don't mind unnecessary 'gameplay fixes' with no way to turn them off: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5864/
Literally, throughout Tom Slattery's entire career, you can count the number of screw-ups on one hand (and half or most of those are Chrono Trigger), as opposed to anything touched by Ted Woolsey where you can compile giant lists on each game.

It's probably executive decision wanting to avoid a repeat of Tom Slattery's "controversial" retranslations uncomfortably reminding players that their childhood is a lie. It took *YEARS* for his Final Fantasy VI retranslation to be recognized as the definitive version outside of RHDN's phony little resident insanity cabal. They probably expected the same thing to happen if they cracked another game wide open. An at-the-time underrated retranslation that would much later be lauded, after the re-release it was developed for ceased to be profitable. Mario RPG is never getting the retranslation it deserves through official means thanks to Woolsey-obsessers ruining it for everyone.

Is there a QRD for this somewhere? I can't find much on Google

My pie-in-the-sky pipe dream is that they're not radically changing too much because a real Super Mario RPG 2 is in the pre-planning stages and they don't want to alienate fans of the original who would skip a remake but buy a sequel.

the psychopath text for small goombas had a raunchy adult joke in the original script that was basically about clit masturbation and gushing

I just thought that was neat

Psychopaths look like one of the best parts. Battle text had so little space that it was basically an afterthought in the original translation, so it's cool they're highlighting it.

          >Tom Slattery's "controversial" retranslations
Is there a QRD for this somewhere? I can't find much on Google

Short version, Slattery literally did nothing wrong and his retranslations were the best one can hope for. But he dared to touch "iconic" Woolsey, the man whose translations were the stuff of urban legend, and screeching idiots hated him at the time for it (some still do - we call these people "special"), so fan-relocalizations by failed translation-deficient writers came out of the woodwork that frankenstein his work and Woolsey's to varying degrees of success. It was only when Mato did his FFVI Legends of Localization analysis livestreams did he basically btfo the entire FFVI fanbase by pointing out how perfect Slattery's version truly was.

I know it's a meme, but at this point, if multimillion-dollar companies are okay with copying game-ancient text nigh-verbatim, you should really just give up on them and play in Japanese.

I'm a bit nostalgic for Woolsey's translations too and view them as neat time capsules nowadays, but I really hate the obsession around them.
Portability aside, one of the reasons I even bothered finishing the GBA and DS versions of Square games despite already having played the SNES versions was that it was interesting to see how much was changed. They were 90% the same game most of the time but it was refreshing that they were a new interpretation of the Japanese original.
I mean, what's the point of a re-release if you're just going to do the same old thing anyway but in a different package?

Really unsure whether to wait for the remaster or play the old one now. The old one isn't a particularly good looking game, but neither is the remake to be honest. Wonder, since my schedule's clear for this weekend to blow through the remake but shitty for the rest of the year (I already "supported" this game via preorder but I'd prefer to keep that in mint condition to resell it in a few decades, maybe I should've gotten seven copies for the lols).

          >I honestly really hope they save it for the sequel and not blow their load early, because of course a sequel is happening now and he specifically wanted to appear in "another game" didn't he?
I -think- that bit was in the English version only, though I somewhat agree. I hope it's just a Culex-inspired superboss and not "Culex but 3D!" because that means they're less confident in a sequel happening with returning characters.

          >We are now defending soulless direct translations just because they are more accurate to the original

I'm not saying that the corpos are shilling, but I do find it curious, as we get closer to the release, that there's a sudden uptick in people thinking the original translation was "direct." It's like these people have never heard of a Woolsey translation. This probably wouldn't happen if kiddy relocalizers could never resist in muddying the waters for real retranslations. Thanks, greedy jerks.

I don't think this remake is going to sell well enough to make Nintendo consider a sequel. It's coming out under the shadow of Mario Wonder, now the fastest selling Mario game of all time, a juggernaut casting a very long shadow that will engulf everything in its path for the holiday season. It's the Mario game all the kids are going to get, whether it's asked for or simply seen by family members in stores to pick up. RPG will likely languish in entirely unimpressive sales like the new WarioWare game that also had the misfortune of being buried by Wonder. I'd love to be wrong.

It still manages to stand out from the other Smithy minions. BOWyer. YARI/SPEARdovich. AXEm. And this one's CLAYMORton, a letter short. If they were set on claymore, why not something like, I dunno, CLAYMOREn? Or find another sword to spin names out of. How about FLAMBERGErac? Get it? Because Flame?

To be honest, this version feels like they pulled Woolsey and/or his crew out of retirement and said "okay, we're fans of what you did, and we'd like you to show us what you would have done if you had a little more time to work on it."

And that's FINE, but there's something to be said about a version that comes out a whopping 27 years later and reads like the original with 27 more days of work.

im loving this remake so far, i dont even mind the soulless UI anymore, the game looks really good. I also stopped watching videos about this remake (im talking about the footage in all the "first impressions" videos i've come across), just the 3 trailers.

Im glad nintendo spoiled the booster curtain and culex; because i would have been disappointed if i had seen them in person lol

I'm only disappointed in Culex not being reworked as a 2DHD sprite because the game's original sprites look like dogshit on modern displays. It sounds like he's all but confirmed to have a rematch with a 3D model anyways.

      Anonymous

I suppose this is "more" pixel-accurate to the SNES game than LA Switch (because the designs are mostly intact and the perspective is the same, etc.), but I surmise the toy and tilt-shift aesthetic in LA Switch reminded people they were playing a children's game, which probably put them off.

I loved LA Switch framedrops aside

Very weird hodge-podge version of Culex here, I wonder if this is a sign that the "Dark Mage" will eventually show up as the sequel's superboss.
Also, if "the wrong people can get their wish granted" is a window into what the sequel's premise might be, it would be an interesting direction.
