Because they literally removed incest. Their Patreon page was blocked for several months until they submitted a new version of the game to a Patreon committee who reviewed and approved the changes. The game was censored in the most classic sense of the word, not like other games that were born ambiguous and give the player the chance to write whatever they want.

The patch isn't officially supported. And even if you ignore that, it radically altered the development and course of the game. The patches won't give you the content that'll no longer be made as a result of the incest being gutted.

You guys meme, but this game is actually somehow one of the better WEGs, which probably says more about the absolute state of the industry, but here we are. The game gets a lot of criticism for its artstyle; and it's all well deserved, but one thing you can say is that it's consistent. Most WEGs aren't even in development for long enough to establish consistency before it's abandoned.
Summertime Saga actually has a complete central story, which is something that can't be said for a lot of these games. This isn't one of those 0.321alpha releases that never finished the plot.
The actual story of the game has an arc, has an ending. What the game doesn't have is subplots for various side characters. Those have been added progressively, and yes, that has taken way too long, and the game has been in refactor mode for years as he converts it to widescreen.
But end of the day, this isn't an "unfinished" game in the sense many others are. It has a beginning, middle, and end. And the plot isn't particularly rushed. What is being done now is more akin to free sidequest DLC, supplementing the main experience.
I do think the way he's handled the incest, ahem, "roommate" stuff is bullshit, though. Landlady/roommate games are cringe. I think the idea is that once the game is 100% finished, it will be released uncensored, so you won't need the intermittently updated fan patch. The problem? Well, because he makes a shitload of money from Patreon, he doesn't really have an incentive to stop working on the game and release the "final" version with no censorship and all the content he will ever include. You might say, "Well, couldn't he pivot to a new game?" Yea, but who's to say he won't alienate his Patreons doing that?

All the main bitches get a route: your mom, your aunt, your sister, the main bitches from school. It'd be quicker just to tell you who doesn't have a route yet. IMHO the most important girls to not get a route yet are Annie, Judith, the headmaster, and the coach. Some routes only have 1 or 2 scenes when the quest you had to do feels like they should have 10. But the main women all have their own designated routes.
This shouldn't need to be said, but the game is virtually unplayable without the extended incest patch. None of the relationships/motivations make any sense if they aren't related (well, they don't make any sense in "h-game terms" at least). Don't further ruin the experience for yourself.

So i wonder if he might just combine the Rhonda and the tech update into a single update.
