It was acknowledged multiple times in Dread through rewards. One being a title-card reward for each mainline entry of the series which includes Other M, showing how much they regard it, and the other is the completion reward that shows off Adam with his Other M design. Additionally, the official timeline for Samus Returns included Other M but left aside the Prime games.

      Correct.

SR and Dread are basically a matured and non retarded implementation of Other M's playstyle, of course they recognize it

          Anonymous

SR and Dread are standard 2D Metroid games with the addition of 360 degree aim; the playstyle preceded Other M by a longshot, which was meant to be a new take on the classic design separate from the conventional 2D format. The acknowledgement of Other M is more a matter of narrative relevance being that it's a numbered Metroid entry (3.5).

I still don't get the Prime retcon. It literally doesn't hurt the series in any way whatsoever other than fixing the issue with Mother Brain and Space Pirates being hiveminded retards.

Prime actually fixes a lot of the retarded shit about the lore. No reason to say it isn't canon, and the only one who has ever said it is Sakamoto. I get its his baby at the end of the day, and those are the ones he didn't make, but it really does just seem petty of him.

I genuinely do not believe this, they don't even give a shit about your social media presence when you apply for clearance, the only two things they actually give a shit about are "do you have any outstanding debts" and "do you have a criminal record," and even on the debt thing as long as you're honest and state that you can or have paid it off they still don't care. What I heard it wasn’t about Dobson being a security risk or anything, it was because Dobbro was applying for a marketing position where he would also be the face of the company (like a Reggie or Flo or whatever) and he lost the position because having your company’s face related to the internet’s favorite punching bag would kind of defeat the purpose. Personally, I think that’s bullshit too. What I believe ACTUALLY happened was just him being mind broken over his muslim-lesbian-vampire-ski-lodge-twitter comic getting leaked and mocked so he bailed from the internet for a couple of months, realized he actually felt better not screaming his shitty opinions into the void, and came to the wise decision to stay off permanently

rampant contrarianism, which usually comes from being bullied too much as a kid, and needing to adopt a mentality of always going against the crowd, because that's how you cope.

Alternately, autistic resistance to change, meaning you always prefer things that superficially resemble your childhood, even if they fucking suck. Metroid Other M, at least superficially better resembles Super Metroid, because it's a sidescroller, and it uses enemy designs straight out of the old manuals, even if they're rendered in a way that looks shitty. This is how these people's minds work.

I should also add that first person shooters are bad, because they're "jock" games, and no I wont elaborate, or budge at all on how childish this mindset is.

I can’t find it now but before the game came out, I remember an interview where one of the guys from Team Ninja says they really wanted to give the player the option to use the Wii Classic Controller or Nunchuck so the player could use a stick to navigate the 3D environments easier only for Sakamoto to say something like
        >The game HAS to be controlled with the Wiimote mode on its side because that way it’s most like the Famicom original so no sticks!
and everyone at Team Ninja just had to go along with it because he was the boss despite the fact they all knew it was a bad idea. He made a bunch of bizarre decisions like that.

          You've got it backwards.

          >IGN: You also mentioned that Metroid Other M was originally to be an on-rails design. How far into the design did that change to what we're playing now?
          >Sakamoto: I want to clarify, I've seen lots of news stories out there that misinterpreted what I said about the on-rails part and may have gotten the wrong idea. What I meant, in the original concept, Samus could move back and forth but only on a fixed path, not that it was automatic movement forward constantly like in rail shooters...
          >IGN: Oh, I knew what you meant when you said it. I pictured in my mind something similar to, say, Klonoa, where you're on a fixed path and the 3D environment moves around you…
          >Sakamoto: Ah, yes, Klonoa! Right. You got it. (laughs) I wanted to stick with the D-pad control scheme, and it was Team Ninja that found an interesting way to manage D-pad only movement in a 3D environment, and we were able to move away from that early design concept. This happened very early on, a very early stage in development.

The traditional style control scheme was a thing from the beginning. The 3D play came later because Team Ninja figured out a design that worked with that core constraint.

No, it was that the Purple color was visually jarring to him in more serious moments late in the game, so he asked that they come up with a different implementation to imply that she had that power up instead. The purple glow was chosen instead for that variation.

A focus on a story that didn't need to be told, horrible controls, the level design change of exploration into strict linearity with virtually no decision making along with your fucking powers not being stolen but Samus is too retarded to activate them on her own, the monotonous and frankly boring "combat" which is just dodge, press shoot button. Absolute disrespect for previous Metroid titles by flat out ignoring some of them "IT WAS THE FIRST TIME I WAS ON A JOINT MISSION!"

Other M is bottom of the barrel not because it's a mediocre action game, but because of the level of disrespect it shows to Metroid fans by going "Fuck you"

basically everything. my favorite bad part of the story that no one mentions is that she does the escape run from the self-destructing ship in only the zero suit for literally no reason. she deactivates the power suit in a cutscene and then just doesn't turn it back on. it's the perfect cherry on top of a truly awful story.

The control scheme was horrendous, the charge beam was really overpowered for what it was and trivialized a lot of the combat, it turned Samus into a complete retard who needs Adam to authorize not burning to death, your upgrades are just arbitrarily locked because Adam tells you to, Remembuh Me is the only good character, Adam is terrible, it spends time on a story you do not care about, and it is so linear it hurts.

To each their own, but I despised it personally. I get its sort of a reverse dinosaur->bird thing, (with the dinosaur being more of a dragon and its a space alien), but I'd have preferred if it was just more lizard like the entire way, without all the feathers/fur shit it has going on.

Besides, personally, I don't think we ever really needed to see a baby/adolescent Ridley. We didn't even need Ridley there in the first place honestly.

just as a design in a vacuum, separate from its role in the story, i kinda like the middle lizard-like form. seeing its molted husk was a neat visual. the furby one was just goofy but the part where samus calls it a 'disgusting creature' out of nowhere made me laugh with how unexpected it was

Baby Ridley being a little chicken thing was pretty silly but I did like the design of adolescent Ridley where it has the tail but hasn’t grown wings yet.

            I mean even then.

            >She assumes he's dead after Metroid
            >She sees him rebuilt in Prime and assumes he's dead after that
            >She sees him not only survive that but also Phazon Induced and explodes
            >See's him again in Super, either its his original body that has been regrafted together, or just another Clone (I believe canonically its his real body and somehow he survived exploding into tiny phazon bits)
            >Still not surprised at all by this
            >See's him in Fusion (which granted is canonically after Other M but came first)
            >Still not surprised
            >Other M she is extremely flabbergasted and has a PTSD meltdown over her parents (which you'd think would have happened in the first game since its her first meeting with him since the incident)

And I get it, Prime technically isn't canon, and the 2D games have very minimalistic dialogue, to practically none at all outside of A.D.A.M. and Elevators in Fusion and Intros. But come on, it was silly to even attempt to include that in Other M no matter how you look at it.

How do you know she assumes he's dead in those other mainline circumstances? They only went out of their way to explore Samus's personality in a manner to make it a baseline moving forward with Other M. Her lack of reaction and the unexplored aftermaths don't actually indicate a perspective on her end, and Ridley's not generally been the primary goal or adversary. You can attribute the meltdown to her parents, or you can attribute it to Ridley himself, with her history being an exacerbating factor during a vulnerable time where she no longer regarded him as a threat or a part of her life anymore.

                Anonymous

I mean you can argue the reverse, why would she assume he isn't dead when he keeps coming back? Why would she even assume its Ridley himself, assumedly he has a whole ass species of his race out there. You can argue a lot of things, its just a stupid moment.

No she doesn't. She barely even interacts with Ridley proper and the only time is her mostly realizing little birdie and the adolescent form were Ridley's younger forms in the first place. Besides if we're going off the assumption that Samus can deduce things fairly well, which we know she can, its safe for her to assume that she knows this Ridley is actually a clone by the GF, as is most things on the Bottle Ship.

There is no reason for her to have a meltdown, there really isn't. I have no idea why anyone would even argue this point with how many times she's fought Ridley. She doesn't even act this way in Super. Also she herself straight up says Ridley is her nemesis, she's fully aware of him living through extreme methods and him being a constant battle for her that she needs to finally put to rest.

If they wanted her to freak the fuck out over Ridley they would have. She gets completely immobilized by MB in Super after all after getting her ass kicked, the same thing happens if you lose to Ridley at the start of the game, but there is no effort to make her freeze the fuck up when she encounters Ridley at any point. MoM is the only game in the series, the only game where she reacts in any way to this. Hell she even comments on the Brain AIs the GF is modeling after Mother Brain in Prime 3 for fuck's sake too. She doesn't have a meltdown over Kraid, or anything else, doesn't freak out over Chozo being killed, used, or trying to kill her in Dread.

Its the same shit as defending her accepting that she's a civilian and would face charges. She doesn't act that way in Fusion when threatened with the same action, hell they allowed her to train in her power suit and were generally light-hearted over the whole ordeal. She doesn't have a meltdown with Adam over a single differing decision in the past. She doesn't have meltdowns over all the other Hunters corruption in Prime 3 or any of her actions.

Hell the point of the manga was her overcoming trauma.

                >my long-standing nemesis, Ridley.
I fucking hate that the game never once goes into detail about that. For as much of a big deal is made about Samus' conflict with Ridley, it's never actually explained why she considers the dragon guy her "long standing nemesis".

Then again, the game was advertised as being an exploration of Samus' backstory (past is prologue), but never do they bring up K-2L, or even the goddamn CHOZO. How the hell do you have a character piece without mentioning that fact she was raised by aliens? Fuck this game.

And honestly, we don't even see much of that. Just that insipid thumbs down thing. And younger Samus is portrayed as brash and full of herself. A result of living among highly advanced warrior monks who make everyone else look like primitives perhaps? Who knows.

It's weird that Zero Emissions references the manga and Samus' caretakers Old Bird and whatshisname but not Ridley's apparent relationship with Samus. He opens one of the two lifeforce doors when he dies and that's all the game ever says about him. They didn;t even imply his survival which is really odd because he canonically survived to Super even before Prime.

Don't forget it made Samus suddenly have PTSD over Ridley (despite knowing he's been cloned and rebuilt before), and that Ridley is also a weird chicken lizard thing.

Only good thing about Other M is the flashback shit, that shows Samus was a teenager who hadn't learned yet and made brash decisions, but still cared about her little boy crush and people at the end of the day. Also Samus in civilian clothes at the end that isn't just a picture.

They fixate on it almost certainly by way of being secondaries parroting a popular sentiment and take an uneven handed mockery that can only be levied against the start of the game and play it as a sincere assumption about the broader package.

"The baby" retardation IS representative of the broader package. Every bit of the story is just as bad. Samus is stupid, useless, and a coward. Adam is a fucking shithead and a moron. The setting is just metroid fusion but worse. Adam kills himself to destroy the metroids but he doesn't destroy all the metroids and you blow the space station up at the end anyway. Adam also dies during the mission and his body is totally destroyed, meaning that the AI Adam is a copy of an Adam that Samus never reconciled with, retroactively making that part of Fusion weird and fucked up. The GF apparently were able to clone and miniaturize mother brain, how the fuck did they do that, she was state of the art chozo tech, and why did they think it could end in any way other than disaster? Half the plot is about an assassin among your ranks and the game just fucking forgets to reveal who it was. It's an utter disaster of a script, one of the worst in videogames.

It's a character action game that uses a D-pad and has no melee attack. Sometimes you need to shoot missiles which requires turning the controller in your hand at the screen, which is about as smooth and intuitive as juggling cinder blocks in the dark with your cock, and you can't even move in that first person view. It fucking sucks ass, it's one of the worst controlling first party nintendo games ever made.

The "Samus" in Other M was an experimental clone made by the GF from DNA taken from her after Super. The clone was conditioned to be more obedient to GF orders and more easy to manipulate, with the downside of being overall more emotional and prone to mental breakdowns.

        1. People don't play Metroid games for the story or for character introspection. So making a Metroid game dedicated to those things was always going to be an uphill battle.
        2. The game handles Samus having "emotions" pretty damn poorly. It doesn't feel like a humanization of the character, it feels like she is an entirely different, and altogether weaker person.

I'm not sure what personality Super/Fusion exuded in terms of characterization because I probably have aspergers but "Durr Samus is teh Silent badass" was a Prime invention and I hate how it got to the point where half of Samus lines in Dread were just her screeching

Her turning into a literal babby in Other M was uncalled for though. Even forgetting Prime that's still 3 Ridley fight and a Robot Replica under her belt (Two were retcons but still).

In terms dialogue, she has none in Super outside of the intro, very similary to Dread's. There really isn't any characterization to speak of in it. If you really want to stretch things, you could say that the fact that she spared the infant metroid and her seeming excited about the benefit research into it could provide points to her being a good person, but that's just about it.
In Fusion, you really just get her saying that AI (ADAM) she is paired with reminds her of her former CO (Adam) along with a bit of commentary of her current situation until the end IIRC. Then at the end you get the monologue about how the galaxy will be doomed the moment the Feds come to capture samples from the BSL station and that she can't allow that happen basically. Again, not much characterization to go off of, pretty much just a snippet of her past and an additional affirmation of her being a heroic person I guess.
So I can see why Prime had her be silent. Hell, you can argue that Prime gives you more to work with than Super; the logs are her commentary on the various things you scan afterall.

Honestly its not even that difficult just say the most major plot points happened "Samus uncovers Federation bioweapons experiments on Metroids, Adam sacrifices himself to destroy the project, Samus discovers a conspiracy within the Federation that could be just as dangerous as the Space Pirates" and just don't bring up any individual parts of retardation that was in the game.
Then again I do kinda find it funny how hard they dropped the possibility that they are now on the Federation's shitlist in Dread, as they're right back to working as freelance troubleshooters for them. Though I suppose if the conspiracy had a brain they would pick and choose their battles of getting rid of Samus very carefully.

The translation of Fusion loses the nuance that the aspects of the Federation that engaged in the corruption were actually a fringe group and not the GF themselves as an entity. Samus isn't on bad terms with the GF, nor was she a fugitive.

It's A direction that could have come about, yeah. It's interesting on its face as a development, but the reality is that it'd kind of conflict a bit with the focus of Samus's nature as far as Nintendo has established internally (even prior to Other M). She's regarded as a more altruistic person who has a motherly regard for the Galaxy, protecting it from threats more out of the goodness of her heart than interest in the bounty. Even if she were a fugitive, she'd probably be looking into the next major existential threat as opposed to dealing with a galactic bureaucracy.

            Anonymous

I just figured a Galactic Federation acting as Umbrella Corporation making potentially weaponized Metroids and SA-X abominations for nefarious reasons were kind of an existential threat, I figured it would end the same way in that the people behind it would be exposed and shut down, just that we'd get to play it as it happened . Still, Dread is pretty good and I like the idea of Raven Beak just severely underestimating the shit out of what Metroid-Samus is capable of

      Anonymous

The main plot points that Fusion gave us going forwards are "Samus is part Metroid", "Samus has a computer buddy who is based off a guy she once knew", and "Samus fucked up the Federation’s secret Metroid breeding plans and is now on their shitlist". The first one is easy to follow up on by just continuing to show the effects that had on her body (which Dread did). The second one is also easy because you just need to keep the computer buddy around (which Dread did). The third one is problematic though, because while you might think there’s a ton of cool and simple directions to take that (Samus has to fight Federation soldiers, or they send other bounty hunters after her, or she actively destroy the corrupt parts of Federation, etc) those are all directions Nintendo doesn’t actually to take Samus in. Remember Samus is not actually supposed to hunt bounties, she’s just supposed to be a cool person who hears that there’s a problem and then goes to fix it, she’s just called a "bounty hunter" because it sounds cool. Nintendo doesn’t want her to fight against regular sentient people who are just doing their jobs (space pirates don’t count because they’re evil and fugly) so they only thing they can do with it right now is to just push it off the side until they work out some monster designs for the corrupt Federation members to have that look evil enough to kill but aren’t SO monstrous to make players ask "how did these monstermen get to be in the top levels of the space government?"

I despised Other M, but whether it's canon or not doesn't really affect anything. Dread already walked back Samus' awful characterization and retconned the Federation members in the whole Bottle Ship conspiracy as some fringe splinter group. Nothing of any real importance happened in Other M that wasn't already established in Fusion (Adam's death).

I mean, that was one of the big problems with Other M's story anyway. If in the future, Samus references a time when she had to destroy a Federation space station that was secretly being used to raise Metroids as bioweapons, it's not going to be clear whether she's talking about the events of Other M or Fusion, and it won't matter anyway.

The fringe thing wasn't a retcon. It was a thing since the original Japanese release of Fusion. It also didn't walk back Samus's characterization, much of which was delivered through internal monologues in Other M. Indeed, that game is the closest representation of how Samus engages in combat as seen in Dread. She was utterly brutal in Other M.

It's one thing to port the game, which would make it in line with the switch hardware, but trying to replicate another system and just plop its games in there is a lot harder. Nintendo hasn't even made a commercial gamecube emulator up until 3D All Stars, the Wii and Wii U could play them natively.

Im going to give all of you a little tidbit of knowledge. Canon is whatever you want it to be. The sanctity of a fictional universe is subject to a change in management. Star wars got bought out and 90% of the fictional universe was labelled "non canon" and discarded so they could do what they want with it. This doesnt matter. What you like of something is what you like of if, not what some retard tells you to like or accept. Its literally fiction, fake, a fabricated world. So its as simple as just accepting only what you like

Here is my perspective on Other M, it is both not as bad as what I assumed it would be, yet worse at the same time. I will mainly be talking about the story since I watched the game instead of playing it and Other M is pretty narrative focused anyways.
I'll start off with "The Baby" since it's the first real crock of shit that the game introduces you to. My first point is that The Baby is just such a weird name for Samus to refer to the infant Metroid as. And I'm not just talking about how it sounds either, though it's weird to hear her say it. In the very first moments of the game, Samus refers to the infant Metroid as The Baby, in a recreation of its self sacrifice. What's wrong with that is this cutscene isn't her having a flashback, it's straight up supposed to be the end of Super Metroid. Samus' only interactions with the infant Metroid prior to this moment are: the Metroid imprinting on her on SR388, her handing it to the GF (which she is implied to have immediately done after Metroid 2), and it attacking her then sparing her in Tourian. So why is Samus calling it "The Baby" at this point in time? She has had virtually no time to gain a sentimental attachment to the creature, much less to the point of nicknaming it with such an infantializing term as "The Baby". Keep in mind she called it that BEFORE it sacrificed itself btw. A minor complaint attached to this, but the Federation distress beacon being dubbed "Baby's Cry" is especially corny as well as the reason why it is named that (in the lore). And the only reason why it was named that IRL was so that Samus could have this weird ass maternal moment of her saying that the alarm was like The Baby calling out to her.

Next point is Adam. I can try to see what they were going for with his character, a father figure to Samus whose guidance she trusts due to his tenure as her CO. But boy does Other M do a bad job of this. I actually don't mind that Adam is initially cold to Samus upon her arrival, he didn't request her aid and she quit the army to pursue independent bounty hunting, so it makes sense that he would initially be surprised by and unwelcoming towards her presence. What I don't like is how the game depicts Samus' response to this. Now I was going to say that she should have brought up the distress signal when Adam tells her "That information [the reason why his squad is there] is not for an outsider." My main complaint was that it makes Samus seem incredibly passive instead of having her do the sensible thing and tell Adam why the hell she showed up. But the game does explain that she told him this. Still, the choice to not have Samus actually tell him this through dialogue is odd. And having her say that those words "pierced her heart" makes her come off as a lot more thin skinned and wimpy than she should (going by her previous characterization throughout the series).

Even more annoying though is how shortly after this point you get an exposition dump about his past with Samus. I won't go into detail about it, but my main problem with this (and you can apply this to other points in the story, such as The Baby, as well) is how the story TELLS you the information here instead of SHOWING you it. Samus TELLS you that Adam is like a father to her and he is, without a doubt, the person who understands her the most. But you are not shown this, she just exposits this to you, so it comes off as her just sucking off Adam rather than a legitimate bond. Instead of the game showing you how their bond grew, Samus just tells you that Adam is the greatest and she rebelled against him like a bratty child. Hell, to go back to The Baby, the game doesn't show you why Samus got attached to it before it dies (keep in mind she called it The Baby before it saved her butt); it just exposits about her being sad over it after the fact. It stinks.

And the authorization system, good lord. I get that they wanted Samus to have all of her upgrades, this story takes place right after Super afterall. But they needed to have an excuse for why Samus doesn't have her full suite of upgrades. But what they came up with makes Samus seem pathetic and Adam seem like an incompetent, power-tripping jackass. Sure, I get why you might want to restrict Samus from using Power Bombs, but frankly Samus shouldn't need to be told why her Power Bombs are so dangerous and expressly forbidden from using them, she (prior to this story at least) has been shown to be competent enough for Adam to trust her to not vaporize her allies. And he has worked with the woman enough to know this. Barring that, the Power Bombs are the only bit of Samus' kit that the game treats as being capable of causing enough collateral to restrict their use, so why the fuck couldn't she use her beam and missle upgrades from the start? Why does Samus need Adam's permission to use the ice beam, freezing opponents would be a very useful ability to have from the beginning. Why does Samus have to wait until Anthony is about to bite it to be able to use a glorified grappling hook? Why does Samus have to wait until enemies are shooting at her from behind walls to finally use Wave Beam? Why does she have to wait until Ridley shows up to use plasma? And don't give me the excuse about collateral: 1. Samus uses her full suite of upgrades (excluding Power Bombs) in a room full of Fed Troops at the end of the game without hurting them just fine. 2. She's not even around the other members of Adam's squad most of the time, so wall banging someone with the wave beam isn't even a concern anyways.

            Anonymous

I can understand Adam authorizing the use of plasma and ice for the other members of his squad since ammo might be (and is confirmed to be in the case of plasma) limited. But Samus has unlimited ammo; she can even regen missiles in this game by just standing still for a moment. And again, Samus should then be competent enough to not kill her allies with her weapons. I haven't been in the military or anything, but I'm pretty sure with the exception of stuff with limited ammo (like the squad's ice or Anthony's) plasma, this would be a weapons hot scenario, not one where Adam needs to give Samus license to use her tools. Overall, only one moment managed to sell Adam to me as a character, and nothing sold him to me as a CO.
As for the Varia suit moment, I've been told that the reason why Samus didn't use Varia wasn't because she would dare use it with Adam's permission, but out of spite. So the game decided to take Samus, a character that (if anything could be said about her before this point) is a very competent and professional person when it comes to her job, and made her a bratty child throwing a tantrum for daddy's attention. A tantrum that results in her burning alive in her suit. Either explanation for the Varia Suit incident is character assassination, simple as.

And now for the worst part of this game imo, Samus' encounter with Ridley. Despite what I've said about Adam and The Baby, those elements of the story weren't as bad as I had originally expected them to be (I'll get into some praise for the story later). But this hunk of shit was genuinely worse than I had been prepared for. So upon seeing Ridley, a monster Samus has killed a minimum of 2 times before if you don't Prime and a maximum of 4 times before if you do, Samus immediately freezes and has a PTSD meltdown. This meltdown is so bad that: Ridley is able to casually walk up to Samus and scoop her up in his claws, Samus loses the will to maintain her Power Suit, and Anthony has to save Samus's ass and seemingly get killed in the process. So Samus chokes so hard from seeing an asshole she has obliterated on numerous occasions that she almost gets herself and her friend killed. Fucking pathetic, way to make Samus into a moron. At this point, Samus should react to this asswipe with mild annoyance. The Metroid Manga does this plot beat infinitely better by having her breakdown occur the first time she encounters Ridley after he killed her parents, at 14 years old no less. A child breaking down upon seeing the monster that roasted her mother in front of her for the first time since he made her an orphan makes a hell of a lot more sense than a veteran warrior breakdown upon seeing a monster she has curb stomped multiple times before.

Now time for the less negative segment of this "review" of Other M. There will still be some complaints going forward, but I've covered everything that I found to be atrocious, and I have some genuine praise for the game.
I'll start by saying that I like MB. Are the feds retarded for trying to create a clone of Mother Brain to weaponize Metroids? Yes. Was it stupid to not anticipate that a robot caretaker might develop emotions? Yes. But all things considered, I like her story, on paper at least. Her being a tragic figure due to the Feds desire to control her is kinda cool, and I like her relationship with Madeline. I do think that, like with every story beat in Other M, there is far too much telling instead of showing, and her story beat definitely suffers from it.. But it just didn't hurt her character as much as it did Adam's. I also like the theme of motherhood involving her story, and it is a cool parallel to the relationship between Samus and The Baby. On paper. In practice, Other M fails when trying to apply the motherhood theme to Samus for reasons I've already covered.

Next is Adam's sacrifice. I'll start this off with a bit of negativity and then work my way to my praises for this scene. First a bit of context; the scene where Adam makes the call to separate from the drive core and leave his brother to die was fine. Samus showing emotion here doesn't seem pathetic, unlike other moments in the game, it's pretty understandable that she wants to save Ian and is distressed at having to watch him die. I also like the lack of emotion from Adam here; I don't interpret this as him being an emotionless piece of shit but him distancing himself from his emotions so that he can make a tough, but necessary call. This is undercut by two things though. 1. Again, show don't tell; Samus's exposition at the end of the scene wasn't necessary. They should have restrained themselves a bit on that. 2. I feel like this is supposed to sell me on how good of a CO Adam is. While it was a tough call, frankly it doesn't justify why Samus dickrides Adam so much. But the scene does a good enough job setting up Adam's own sacrifice. So I'll skip recapping and tell you guys what I like about this scene. I like that Adam shot Samus, frankly it was the only way he could have made sure that she didn't follow him to wipe out the Metroids. I also SOMEWHAT like that he reassures her that wiping out the Metroids was a necessary call. And this moment actually shows that he trusts Samus. While she pleads with him to let her take out the Metroids so that he won't die, telling him to trust her; he actually entrusts to prevent the attack against the Federation, kill Ridley, and rescue any survivors. That's touching in a way that almost sells me on him. And he caps it off with the one cool use of the term "Lady" in the entire game.

                Anonymous

Here's what I don't like about this scene. 1. Why did Adam shoot Samus before the Metroid was dealt with? Notice how I didn't say "before shooting the Metroid", I'm pretty sure Adam needed to get the jump on Samus in order to disable her. But he could have just waited until she killed the Metroid to do so, instead of putting her at risk of being killed. He would have felt pretty stupid if those metroids were immune to ice in their larval stage. 2. The ice immunity is just a hunch. This in of itself actually isn't a huge shot against Adam, he pretty much all admits that it's a hunch himself. It's more so that the story failed to sell me on his intuition really, to the point where I wonder if he could have just asked Samus to confirm if they were immune to ice or something before retreating (though that might have gotten her swarmed). Again, not the strongest point against him here, but it is worth pointing out that Adam has not proved his competence at this point. 3. The dickriding. Frankly Samus's exposition at the end of this scene damn near ruined it for me. FFS Sakamoto couldn't just let the emotional moment hang, no Samus had to bring up that Adam was the person who understood her best and, get this, the closest thing to a father she had. Grey Voice is rolling in his grave man. I'm not against her grieving him, but man could she have refrained from slobbing on his nob while doing so? 4. The thumbs down, didn't address properly early, but it is fucking cringy. 5. Most importantly, the scene is undermined by how unlikeable Adam is as a character before this moment. The only time I felt somewhat sad watching this scene is when I looked it up on youtube, by itself and divorced from the rest of the game. Like watching a scene from an anime that you haven't watched. When I watched this in a playthrough, I wasn't sad at all. I said "This might have made me sad if Adam wasn't such a douche. But as it stands, I'm kinda glad he is dead."

Now time for my last couple of points. Is Other M complete shit? No, I think that it has some good concepts, it just fails miserably in execution. Character butchery aside, Other M's biggest failure is that it exposits to you rather than showing you things, and that really makes it fail to sell some of its core concepts. Hell, the exposition actively undermines some of its core themes. But a more important question is: Did a story like this need to be made for Metroid? I'm of mixed opinion on this. The story is blatantly trying to be movieshit, and that is pretty contradictory to the other games in the series. I don't think that many people were curious about Samus as a character, and simply liked her as an avatar for the player to experience the games through. Hell, I've said that the game needed to show and not tell its story more, which frankly would have required even more cutscenes and time. In a game that already feels like a drag, ESPECIALLY for a Metroid game. Though I do think the story had some good things that make me believe that concept itself isn't without merit. Ultimately, it matters little; the execution of this story has all but guaranteed that this will never be tried with Metroid again. And that's probably for the best.

And as for gameplay, I didn't play this myself, so I have few thoughts on it. The combat looks cool enough, though I've heard that the control scheme makes it a pain to actually play. Speedbooster looks like shit in this game; you run at the same speed as you do normally and you need a country mile to initiate it. Even worse, there are tons of little speed bumps that prevent you from using it in certain areas. The wave beam moment made the authorization system seem like a pain to deal with gameplay wise, you literally run down a couple of hallways and do a puzzle maze only to not have the clearance to use the upgrade you need to use to advance at the end of it. Then you go back down the hallways to get trapped behind glass and get authorization to use wave beam. Then you turn right back around and do the same thing all over again now that you are able to use an upgrade that you had the entire time. This seems like it would rob the feeling of discovery that you get from other metroid games, but I would have to play it to make certain of that. What I can say for certain is that other Metroid games do back tracking a lot better than that. Usually when you run into something that requires an upgrade you don't have yet, you have to explore an area you haven't already, and you find other shit on the way there. You don't just go down a hallway, only to immediately turn back around, only to back down the same hallway. I think there was at least one other moment like this but I'm not sure. And I'll probably never play this game to find out.

The thing I don't like about Adam reassuring Samus that wiping out the Metroids was the right call is that Samus has never had any hang ups about doing that. Obviously she didn't in the other games, but even in Other M she doesn't seem to regret killing them at all (not saying that she should because holy fuck that would be cringe worthy). Other M was more of a Metroid game than the first person shooters were.

I've never played Other M or the Prime games and somehow I never felt like there was anything missing from the story. Prime and Other M are like non-canon spin-offs to me tbh

Okay, but how would the real Adam handle this?

I believe he would say the same but offer more suggestions on what to do next. After the X release stage fake-Adam was way too obvious.
I just found Adam posting funny and it gave me lots of laughs on release month while trying to get hard mode under 4 hours.

'Cause he doesn't tell her shit in the game until he absolutely has to, the genetically modified metroids, the conspiracy that he suspects long before she starts piecing it together. He compartmentalizes information to a fault, which could be interesting characterization if it was intentional, a rigorous tactical mind being one of his weaknesses as well as his strengths, but it's clearly not supposed to be taken that way.

Metroid only has 5 main games though. Prime is a little inconsistent (cough space pirate designs cough) but otherwise consistent with it's own lore at least.

Metroid Prime the creature itself is a bit of a clusterfuck with all the regional retcons and the husk on Phaaze.

Most of Other M's canon just uses that silly web-manga that came out around Fusion anyway, I don't there's any significant departures from the timeline. Barely matters.

Other M had no footage shown because of the ties to Team Ninja.
Sakamoto wanted Other M to be his way, but Team Ninja wanted it to be different.
He talks a lot about how they didn't make the game the way he wanted because they thought his way was unreasonable.
Maybe Team Ninja was in the right for wanting the game more 3Dish orientated than a mix of both 2D and 3D, but in the end it pissed off Sakamoto enough for him to sink that relationship.
Pretty sure it'll probably get a Remake at some point in the future in his ideal "image" by Mercury Steam.
Especially since it's constantly referenced throughout Dread and was crucial to bridging Super and Fusion despite it's less than stellar writing.

The storytelling, and the fact that the game is so opposed to letting you do any Metroid exploration is what people take issue with anyway.
      >crucial to bridging Super and Fusion
Eh, not really. It actually creates more plot holes. Nightmare dies twice now.
It was perfectly fine, just knowing Adam as a guy from Samus' past. He didn't need to be elaborated on at all, and there was a manga for that anyway.

        >It actually creates more plot holes. Nightmare dies twice now.
        It in fact does not.
        - Ridley's body was wiped out in Super since he never made it off the planet. Other M answers why his "body" was in storage during Fusion.
        - Samus remarks the Galactic Federation went through a huge shift in management in Fusion due to shady happenings. We never got any indication that the Galactic Federation was up to no good until Other M.
        >It was perfectly fine, just knowing Adam as a guy from Samus' past. He didn't need to be elaborated on at all, and there was a manga for that anyway.
        - Raven Beak throws a huge wrench into the manga's canonicity by just existing since Samus childhood is covered thoroughly in it.

      >He talks a lot about how they didn't make the game the way he wanted because they thought his way was unreasonable.
      Boy were they fucking right.
Every bit of Sakamoto talking behind the scenes makes him sounds like he was off his rocker for the entire production.
He can try and act as much like a shunned auteur in retrospect as much as he likes, he still handed off the entire story cutscene/VA casting to some other studio and didn't communicate with them once.

Sakamoto's ideas suck, anyway, all that crappy writing and retcons were on paper long before Other M.

Team Ninja was done dirty as was Metroid by Sakamoto.
It sucks that we'll never get what Team Ninja had in mind by the end of it all since they usually pump out pretty good games.
I just hope that when the day comes that Sakamoto wants Mercury Steam to take a crack at it he doesn't bitch and groan about his image.

A remake that fixes every problem would essentially be a different game, even down to the designs, tone, and writing, I'd be interested in seeing that attempted.

        Anonymous

We could always get Sakamoto claiming that the minimal style of Dread was his intention with Other M which would lead only for him throwing Team Ninja under the bus a second time after the first outing.
I am not opposed to seeing them at least give the less than stellar attempt a second shot, but one that's memorable for a good reason.

My favorite "haha funny in hindsight" Other M thing is in the lead up to the game, there's a magazine cover with suitless Samus's face filling the whole thing and the tag line "Samus as you've never seen her before"

Anthony is based enough he more than makes up for the rest of the literal whos in his squad but he's still just one character, I'd say Prime 3 has the strongest supporting cast overall thanks to the other hunters.

Hopefully during the Switch's clearly dragged out life span, Mercury Steam remakes Zero Mission, Super and Fusion in the style of Dread while remastering Samus Returns with QoL improvements from Dread.
Shouldn't be too hard now that they have a boat load of assets to work with.
