It's not even a gnomish technique. Basically your share price per stock is $1000. Well who the fuck can afford that except rich people? So companies will sometimes split a share. Maybe it's 2-to-1 (you will now have 2 shares for every 1 you owned) so now the price of the stock is $500 each. You retain the value of your total shares but now it becomes easier to buy and sell smaller volumes and allows poorer people to buy in.

But the stock market itself is gnomish

To get cash to propel your business to levels it couldn't grow to without it?

Basically when a stocks price is to high that means less people are able to afford it. So by splitting the stock a certain way you create more shares for people to buy with diluting its price(usually)

Doesnt that mean that nintendo is doing so well they have to split their stocks because of how valuable theyve gotten?

            Anonymous

Usually yes and for Nintendo case, but a companies stock is not always indicative of its financial health. Enron and Jp morgan come to mind

            [...]
And that's how the garden gnome got into Nintendo and took over the company.

the shares all go to people who already own the stocks dumbfuck. In fact it makes it harder to take over a company.

            Anonymous

Yes and No. Nintendo is doing extremely well but their peak stock price was $80 for this switch generation. Right now it's like $50 (which is better than the $12 or so per share with the Wii U). It's not like an over bloated stock like Tesla which has nothing but California tax revenue propping up the company. And it's not a massively expensive stock like Amazon which NEEDED a split because it was impossible to buy it for most people.

        Anonymous

When shares get too expensive they'll just make the value of 1 = 10 so the price goes down per share. It's just so more people can invest in whole share amounts and also makes options more accessible.

Say you want to buy a stock.
        Just one.
        It's easier now.
Nothing changes for current shareholders. If you had 1 stock worth $100 one day, and there's a 1-10 split, you'll still have $100 worth of stock the next day.

You technically can, through a middle man. The middle man buys a bunch of the full stocks, then their system keeps track of how much "apple" you and everyone else using their system owns.

they essentially multiplied their total stocks by 10, thus the stock value decreased by 90%, that it's less than 90% shows their stock value actually increased during this stock split period.
