dual swords for my entire run were always slotted. had to switch to Odachi to beat Ryumen because with Odachi i had to play correctly for a shorter amount of time but after that the versatility just shone with DB

    >infinite slash during break openings
    >more than enough stamina
    >overheadjump in low stance/leaping slash in high staple utility moves
    >ki burst forward ability to continue oppression

literally cant go wrong, might go Hatchets for secondary next run

    ah perfect
bros i hit NG++ which is Dream of the Demon i think?
and bosses are just such giant HP sponges it takes forever to kill them, its not fun anymore
do you ever get back to the sweetspot of the previous difficulties where you just both melted eachother or is it like this now forever?
i tried a few different builds, but it was always the same

      >do you ever get back to the sweetspot of the previous difficulties where you just both melted eachother
Yeah, but you need to do Grace hunting. Basically this difficulty is when the game asked you to finally pick a build.

regular sets cant get graces right?
so i should just ignore regular sets?
ive had the most luck with a ninjutsu build so far using katos and iga ninja with the thing that gives -1 to set requirements
but its kinda boring just throwing shit at people until the ydie and it doesnt work very well in DotD

          >regular sets cant get graces right?

normal sets get ethereal versions with an extra effect tacked on, usually marginal but sometimes worth pursuing as a secondary to a grace.

Bosses are only HP sponges if you are not burst countering or grappling to remove the Demon buff that actively reduces the ki damage they take. Plus if you don't have an adequate build for DotD you could be leaving a huge amount of damage on the table. My build currently doesn't exist, but I have a couple coordinating pieces in play with confusion and ippon datara and the only boss that has walled me in DotD so far has been Kashin Koji. Dude is a pushover without the buff, but with it he becomes a test of your fundamentals.

hmm this must be what im doing wrong
since the ninjutsu build just involved yeeting stuff and running i never burst countered or grappled
i didnt read the curse tooltip very well and didnt notice it made them more tanky

          Anonymous

Yeah, the curse of the demon is what makes them really tanky. Once you dispel it and put confusion you're golden to give them the beat down.

Started my DotD playing with katana since tonfa obliterated samurai and strong. It's a nice change of pace but it doesn't feel like it excels at anything in particular, or even that it is good at capitalizing on forcing openings. It's just woefully average. I'm thinking I might try spear next since I also have all the hidden skills unlocked for that. I'm starting to feel the burn from not using brute counters lately in DotD. I love Ho-Oh for my tonfa purity build, but it might be time to branch out into a brute based GS like baku with corruption.

Sword is mediocre in 2 but don't let redditors read this

        Anonymous

I'm not surprised. It was mediocre in 1 as well. The toolkit feels more reactive than proactive and the game just rewards proactive playstyles way more than deflecting. I frequently find myself attacking human enemies and wishing kat had something like 2kat or hatchet that takes advantage of being deflected. Or how other weapons just have beefy break values to overcome not having access to a defection counter. Sword just sits there with its mediocre break and block values.

You have to beat Easy to unlock Really Easy, then you have to beat Really Easy to unlock Normal, then you have to beat Normal to unlock Still Easy, then you have to beat Still Easy to unlock 1000 Floors Of Recycled Enemies In a Generic Room. Then once you've done all of that the game begins but trust me it gets good 300 episodes in.

Is there any OP build that doesn't require onmyo? Compared to 1, it feels like this is a onmyo game with melee as a gadget and not the other way around. I'm on DotN and I grew up playing warrior classes in MMORPGs. Am I doomed?

      Anonymous

What in onmyo do you feel is superseding melee? Feels like onmyo only offers utility and not much in the way of raw damage whereas ninjitsu gives you the feathers that deal crazy damage on 0 ki targets

        Anonymous

Whenever I find some OP player destroying a boss, he's always casting like 10 buffs on himself. He'll still melee but it looks like he would be useless without onmyo. I tried looking for builds online and most of them are onmyo based with 200 magic. And the only exception was a ninjutsu based build which had you casting ninjutsu stuff all the time so it felt like the same as the other ones. I just want a strong melee build to have fun with. I can't find 2 good graces/sets to mix them together cause there's always some ranged weapon or accessory missing. Idk what to do so I might just quit the game

          Anonymous

The buffs they are casting are ki regen, weapon enhance, amrita on hit and probably an elemental floater. Defense buffs are optional but most people probably use them, and you can either pull an attack up from onmyo or ninja. Unfortunately you're going to need a minimum investment in those skill trees for higher difficulties because they're balanced around those tools.

what's wrong with using onmyo buffs exactly mixed in with melee to get stronger?
it genuinely sounds like a skill issue because you homosexuals can't be bothered to use the in game mechanics properly
this is like crying about how the game is hard and enemies are spongy because using ki pulse and soul core skills are too much of a hassle for my melee only preferred gameplay

1 is solid, but you still kind of needed to use the attack pill, elements and ki regen buff at a minimum to be successful. Plus Tengen Kujaku and Kato were supreme.

I honestly don't know if there's an objective single best weapon, it comes down to preference and playstyle

I decided to go for all achievements during covid lockdown, and part of that was mastering every weapon, so I've tried all of them extensively

The move set is pretty fast paced and a built in attack buff that allows / encourages canceling attacks and stringing multiple skills together. Lots of satisfyingly skills like I think Battering Ram - whatever the one is that fricking throws dudes like 15 feet - and the grapple feels good to hit enemies with too.

That said Tonfa are my favorite weapon type overall. Apply ailments left and right and keep up constant pressure, can also cancel animations into a demon dance and follow up with multiple different skills.

      Still gives me the goosebumps.

I love a lot of things about Nioh 2's soundtrack. One thing I really love about it (that sadly is sorely underappreciated) is how each region track perfectly describes the mood of each part of the story.

      >Region 1: Awakening
Basically, it's the start of an adventure. You, the player, are off to a journey into unknown territory in a demon-haunted world. The meditative music encapsulates this.
      >Region 2: Soaring
You've made your first big break (joining Nobunaga). The sky is the limit. You feel incredibly optimistic about your future. The song is filled with happy leitmotifs of Tokichiro's theme.
      >Region 3: Shadow
You think to yourself, "OK, maybe the path to glory isn't as going to be as clean cut as I thought it was going to be." The song gives off mystery vibes, which makes sense considering that we learn in this chapter Mitsuhide is conspiring against you and Nobunaga's brother in law conspires against him.
      >Region 4: Dawn
Holy shit, things are getting fricked up. Nobunaga is dead? So is our friend Hanbei? And you part ways with Tokichiro? The mournful tone of this region track makes perfect sense because of this. You're mourning a lot of lost friends and relationships.
      >Region 5: Twilight
Not a single cause for celebration here. You have to kill your old friend Tokichiro. The entire region is about this.
      >Region 6: Dream
You awake in a brand new world with Tokichiro (aka Toyotomi Hideyoshi) as ruler of Japan. The song is basically Tokichiro's theme encapsulating his triumph over the nation, and the chapter is about bringing down his rule.
      >Region 7: Afterglow
The prequel finally becomes a sequel. We come back to a decade after Nioh 1. Everything comes together. In particular, William's story finally comes to a close. Having Nioh 1's theme play here makes sense.

Looking back, Nioh 2's story has a weird delivery because it assumes you know about the historical events (like Tokichiro psyching out about "kids not winning in wars" because he was literally just forced to execute a toddler and the game seemingly implies it's why he played his part in betraying Nobunaga), but it has a very distinct "life's journey" feeling to it only a few other recent japanese stories managed to capture this well.

It reminds me about Sengoku Youko in that aspect. Especially the fact Hiddy is immortal, so he gets to see everyone around but Mumyo leaving through Interim after bidding farewells to him.

My opinion of Kukai as a boss has gone up dramatically after I learned that it was actually possible to parry him in his last/armored/living weapon phase.

Not to mention that precisely because he's hyper armored on everything on his last phase, you can whale on him with full combos without him flinching and blocking to recover (the way regular human bosses do whenever you try to combo them and they still have ki). So for example, he always does the full animation for Twin Phoenix when he's in his final phase. It's a three part attack with very long recovery. When he's finished the third part of the attack and is recovering, you can get behind him and hit him with all four hits of a sword mid stance and do hefty damage on him.

Well, if you're going to be running Constitution, that means you're going to have Ultimate Constitution. Which means that you're going to want to have your health at max (or at least above 70%) as often as possible so that you're always healing yourself.
Personally, for guardian spirits, I'd recommend a mixture of Inososao (which helps reduce damage taken while mid-attack) while having Onryoki as a soul core for additional damage reduction while mid attack, as well as Ho-Oh simply for the Calming Breath passive that tops off your health during levels in case you get below 70%.
As for clans, Kato clan is also good since it both gives you additional damage reduction while mid attack as well as a modest spear damage boost. Or you can use the Uesugi clan bonus that nullifies a chunk of damage temporarily after purifying a yokai puddle.

Which brute phantom do you use? I've been thinking about hopping off of Ho-Oh lately

Mizuchi is my favorite, simply because the guardian spirit attack is so damn good and flows really well with combos.

I like using the snake a lot of the time, it gives easy access to poison via Yokai Skills which helps me with covering every single ailment option, and the Spirit attack is also nice for gathering and launching enemies.

I use Shin-Roku. But I also use a lot of lightning.

Once I learn how to parry his Falcon's Talons moveset, I can completely shut Hayabusa down.

Hayabusa is definitely a lot easier when you can ki-tank his attacks. Most of his dragon sword moveset you can parry by just eating two attacks and then mashing parry, the only problem is when you first run into him he'll break your guard so quickly that if you DO whiff it, you're absolutely dead.

Nothing else in the game drains your ki when blocking as much as Hayabusa. It's honestly kind of insane how much ki damage his Falcon's Talons moveset does. I swear, I've worn full heavy armor with AA in Toughness and had full stacks of Rock Solid, and I still lost a ton of ki when trying to block a lot of his Falcon's Talons combos. . Oh, and don't get me started on trying to block his burst counter charged UTs.
You might as well be wearing no armor for how much his UTs can chunk through your ki.

Its kind of funny, I can't tell if the devs did it on purpose or it just happened by trying to make a SuPeR dIfFicUlT fight but it does feel like hayabusa is playing by ninja gaiden rules while you're stuck with nioh rules. Guard breaking in ninja gaiden happens about as fast as Ren can break yours in nioh.

I think it's on purpose. The only other enemy in the game that comes close to being able to chunk through your ki is First Samurai Otakemaru, and even then that's only his kick moves that drain big ki.
Plus, the fact that Ren Hayabusa can actually do an on-landing UT tells me that the devs wanted this fight to do justice to Hayabusa and make people (particularly fans of the Nioh series who perhaps have never played Ninja Gaiden) respect the name.

Oh no it's definitely Ryu playing by NG rules. I seem to remember Ryu from Nioh 1 doing similar stuff.

Shit. Good idea. I was so amused by him falling off that I didn't even think about doing that.
I should remake this webm by going to that location again and do exactly that when I have the time.

I'm still on NG, just got to the long haired drunk demon, but holy shit did the bosses get easier after the first chapter. Enenra and Yatsu-no-kami blocked me for two days, now i need maybe two or three tries at most. Is the next difficulty spike NG+?

      >holy shit did the bosses get easier after the first chapter.
yeah the game opens up a bit in terms of your skill trees so you have way more options in a fight.
      >Is the next difficulty spike NG+?
nope, DotStr is more of a victory lap, then DotD will kick it up a notch.

Very much so. Same story for me. I think it's a combination of you getting better gear and more skills in your tree. When you're fighting Enenra you're still probably using white items in some slots. After that it opens up enough that you can reasonably get blues and purples.

The way to get responses in a ninja gaiden thread is to post a picture of Rachel.
And then prepare for the shistorm

I'm up to one of her levels and I just stopped playing the campaign and started doing survivals instead. I'm up to 299 on master the dragon sword, is that good?

I consider myself fairly well informed about NGB and NG2 (still have a shit ton to learn for NG3RE though). What do you need to know? I'll help if I can.

The thread was about RE, I got stuck in this really early bit. It turns out you cannot slow down in RE, if you do then you die

Another thing is that good defense matters more in 3 than in 1 or 2. Defense matters in early game obviously, but is absolutely crucial for having fun with 3. As such, learning how to block reset/guard reset does wonders in helping you deal with all the randomness thrown your way (you basically do this by letting go of block when you get guard broken and then very quickly holding block again).

Why can't you do aerial attacks or OL attacks out of the Y counter in NGS? Can you do them in NGB?

No, you can't either. Just tried it on my XSS. No Y counter follow ups for other weapons either.

Switchglaive and Katana are the best.
