Because everyone was too busy crying about Aerith's death that they completely forget about the true plot twist of the game. Finding what really happened inside the reactor was by far the best part of the entire game.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that FFVII is the best game of all time, but the whole set-up and execution of the Nibelheim incident is the best storytelling in gaming history.

the S is a mistranslation based on pronounciation. Japan doesn't have a TH so when spoken aloud would be more like an S. And if you're complaining about that over the mountain of other mistranslated and localized stuff in old FF games well you should probably take some meds. This isnt the 90's anymore where no one in the west knew any better.

It's technically both or either. It's Erissu in Japanese by phonetic. That suffix could be either a th sound or the S sound, they are indistinct from one another in Japanese, it's "su" either way.

And phonetic isn't the same as written which is the point. Now ask me how I know you are a gay who still thinks Guts' name is guttsu. Kill your self immediately.

Wrong. She is called Aerith in FFVII. There is only one place where she is called Aeris, and that's in the naming screen.
If you bypass the naming screen (as speedrun skips do), you learn her name is Aerith by default.

She's been Aerith since the year 2000. Square wants her to be called Aerith. The same company that has carried other name changes forward (Tina/Terra, Frionel/Firion) doubled back on Aeris and said it's not her name. Get over it.

I wouldn't say way more instead of just more, but that is true. Both were intricate in their own manner and method, but Cloud's notably more so. I personally don't separate the emotional impact from the whole, so for me it's a clear landslide.

NTA but while the Aeris death is far more shocking, I find the Cloud twist to have more build up and payoff. There's a bunch of events and dialogue that make no sense until you know the twist and then the game becomes better on new games. Here's a few favorites of the game warning you that Cloud might be a schitzo

              >Aeris: What rank were you?
              >Cloud: Rank?
              >Aeris: You know, in SOLDIER.
              >Cloud:Oh, I was...
              *Flash.*
              >First Class.

Or when Cloud starts finding plotholes in his own story

              >Cloud: You again?
              >...Who are you?
              >?:...You'll find out soon. ......But more importantly, 5 years ago...
              >Cloud: 5 Years ago... Nibelheim?
              >?: When you went to Mt. Nibel then, Tifa was your guide, right?
              >Cloud: Yeah... I was surprised.
              >?: But where was Tifa other than that?
              >Cloud: ...I dunno.
              >?: It was a great chance for you two to see each other again.
              >Cloud: ...You're right.
              >?: Why couldn't you see each other alone?
              >Cloud: ...I don't know. I can't remember clearly...

The most glaring one being Aeris's date

              >Aeris:......first off, it bothered me how you looked exactly alike.
              >Two completely different people, but look exactly the same.
              >The way you walk, gesture...
              >I think I must have seen him again, in you...
              >But you're different.
              >Things are different.
              >Cloud...
              >I'm searching for you.
              >Cloud: ............?
              >Aeris: I want to meet you.
              >Cloud: But I'm right here.
              >Aeris: (I know, I know...what I mean is...)
              >I want to meet...you.

There's also the bits where Tifa asks Cloud if he's sure about his memories. The very fact it's not a definite thing shows all kinds of red flags.

                >I was so proud when I first put it on.
                >I wonder when it was...
                >...I couldn't stand wearing this thing anymore.

I've finished VII 36 times and love everything about it, except Priscilla. Cloud's twist is incredible in its own right, I was not trying to diminish that. However considering bringing justice for Aerith colors the rest of the game for a longer time and it having gameplay ramifications, I find it greater. And well personally I fell into such blinding anger on my first playthrough that nothing registered for me between Cloud saying "But I'm going." and emerging to the snowy overworld. It is a complete blank in my memory. Cloud just can't compete for me with that even if it was an amazing triumphant crescendo and made sense of a web of misdirection, psychoanalysis and mystery.

I think the thing that made Aeris's death hurt the most for me is that she deserved it the least. Most of the FF7 party is pretty Grey. Cloud was a merc hired by a terrorist organization. Cait Sith was Reece who is a Shinra spy. Yuffie was a thief. Vincent was a Turk. Cid may have been abusive to his wife. Aeris was just a flower girl who wanted to know her history. She hung out with Avalanche but it's not like she took part in the bombings. At the end of the game everyone comes together and takes a moment to say that they're not innocent but they still will do the best they can for the planet.

Priscilla looks stupid, is a total imbecile, is reckless, is extremely melodramatic, is entitled, self important, happy, rude brat, whose lightning fast arc makes her addition bipolar, turbotsundere event, which results in her becoming possessive and she somehow has Shiva of all things. As a breaking the ice event to befriend the party to Under-Junon it's alright. Little kids promising to marry cool adults may be in character and Cloud is her savior, so that's not my problem, neither is it the CPR minigame. Her being friends with animals pisses me off. A thing I have to look over with Cara as well. Priscilla is just a bitch with an ego problem and is a little too over-the-top character for VII.

Every other character in the world I like, no matter how inconsequential background NPC they are.

Aeris twist has no buildup and happens so quick. Even devs said they want it to be a sudden death. The equivalent of eclipse scene but lack of gore/rape stuff for it to stick it your head.

Cloud's twist has perfect execution. You knew something was coming together but didn't exactly understand why.

Aeris was sudden but did have sufficient buildup IMO

the scenes like, trying to find her in the sleeping forest, chasing after her and being unable to move
or almost getting mind controlled into slashing her at the forgotten capitol, where every button you press to pull away raises your sword at her, its so fucked up and makes you feel a sense of hopelessness

those scenes were really well done and stick out to me even now, FF7's psychological expression is unmatched IMO no matter how primitive the graphics were

Final Fantasy 7 is the sort of fantasy that I like. I'm not sure if this is a hot take but I don't think Sephiroth on his own is particularly interesting. He's a tornado, the most interesting things about him are the ways he affected things around him. And I think that elevates Cloud. Not too many people can empathize with the idea of being mind control by an alien parasite. But they can empathize with somebody using their worst impulses and their greatest shames to gaslight them into doing things that they would never do in a vacuum. And then the following mental breakdown and distrust of yourself after you've already done it. Which Sephiroth is extremely effective at. The fantastical elements are just used for the more down to earth story beats to make them more interesting

                Anonymous

Aerith's buildup is her being too good for the gritty world of VII (Not for me though, since I honestly think she's a prostitute) but more importantly by her being mysterious, selfsearching, self reflective in a distant and solitary way (happens in her church, her house, the Shinra HQ cell, Costa del Sol Inn and around the Cosmo Candle. Technically also when she leaves for the Forgotten City by herself, but officially what's actually happening there is much more disgusting.), which sets up a distance to pre-emptively mirror and soften the blow of her death. So there is hinting setup, it's just more symbolic and meta.

Though her death being sudden and meaningless is vitally important, only guilt being mixed into it further makes it enduring storywise and elevates it to the top of the franchise deaths, rather than mere player grief.

100% agree. Aeris hit hard, but wasn't out of the blue. Cloud's reveal on the other hand was perfectly foreshadowed and executed, and they absolutely nail the scene in the lifestream. it carries the game to this day.

God I sound like a furfag, but I'm not. It was just probably the most emotional scene in the entire PS1 library.

Here's this father who is so honorable and protective of his tribe, he goes out solo to fight off in invading tribe, sacrificing himself to being petrified but still "alive" to continue keeping the invading tribe at bay for years.
Then like 10 years later, overhearing his son, now grown up, visiting his petrified body for the first time, overhearing his son being told the reason for it all, overhearing his son go from being ashamed of his "cowardly disappearance" to being so proud of that the son declares it out loud after discovering the truth and not even being able to move or do anything.

Tifa went along with it because Cloud was right on the fucking verge of breaking down and she was trying to keep him together.

We outright have scenes of her mentally correcting his tale. "It was five years ago..." "It was actually six..."

Tifa went along with it because Cloud was so frighteningly accurate that the things he "got wrong" left Tifa doubting reality.
Remember: Tifa didn't know Cloud was there in an infantry getup. So when he starts dealing out all these facts that were almost perfectly accurate, just completely misplacing Zack with Cloud, Tifa was basically gaslit. If Cloud wasn't there and his story was wrong, how did he know so much that was right?
She couldn't sort out the contradiction herself and so she stayed quiet.

The Aeris death is much easier to relate. She's the cute girl you meet in the first 15 minutes of the game. And the one skewering her is villain who's one of the most recognizable and iconic characters in any rpg. There's some additional context around the scene but it doesn't really matter and is only relevant later in the plot anyways.

By contrast, the Cloud twist only really has a impact when you understand the backstory and relationships of multiple characters and their motivations. Even if you were to give a very reductive summary, like "Cloud was never actually a SOLDIER", it doesn't make sense to anybody who hasn't at least played to Kalm.

          Anonymous

much easier to explain you mean?
Because gaming journalists are mostly women whom didn't play pass disc 1, let alone explain the real twist of the game.

Also "muh dead character" makes good headline. People would drop reading when you say main character was actually a loser.

            Anonymous

MC being a loser who miraculously accomplishes amazing feats is the ultimate modern male power fantasy though. He struck down a mythical, alien gene-infused super soldier, got 3 girls falling for him, and replaced the head of a resistance (actually terrorist) group as their new leader. Even Aeris who originally became drawn to him due to his similarities to Zack eventually fell for the parts of him that weren't emulating her late ex-boyfriend. Hell, his implied canon love interest is a demure big-tittied female fighter who was his childhood friend and never strongly challenge him on his behaviour either.

              Anonymous

Spunky thief ninja is the canon love interest and no one can tell me otherwise. Nothing after the original is canon after all.

                >Nothing after the original is canon after all.
You need to get into theorycrafting youtube. Stop caring about the story being "good" or "bad" and watch people talk about the lore for hours.
Soon you won't actually care what is happening in the plot anymore and all that matters is what it adds to the lore.

For example Nero showing up in Remake is not good for the story, but it IS good for the lore and the theories.
Once you're a fan of FF7 theorycrafting literally everything that happens in the story, no matter what, is good - because it expands the lore. You can apply this to all the FF games and suddenly "bad writing" or "plotholes" simply disappear.

        >Didn't they already kick Sephiroth's ass in the remake?
No, Cloud tried to use the omnislash which he defeated Sephiroth with in the original and Sephiroph effortlessly parried it then disarmed Cloud. He was toying with them the entire time, Remake is actually a sequel, the Sephiroth we beat in the original has managed to go back in time in some alternate timeline and is working with memories of being defeated the first time. That was the entire point of the ending, Cloud should have beaten Sephiroth there but Sephiroth knew what Cloud would do and countered him accordingly.

          >Cloud should have beaten Sephiroth there but Sephiroth knew what Cloud would do and countered him accordingly.
No he shouldn't have. The Cloud in remake is at a point where a giant snake in the marsh is still a huge threat to him. Same type of snake that Sephiroth put through a tree. And yet in remake cloud has already defeated the metaphysical concept of determinism. I'm not going to write remake off and I don't want this to be interpreted as me seething that they changed the story but it does make me raise an eyebrow at it

Levels are a pure mechanical function and are not representative at all of the in character journey. The characters don't level up and gain more health in the story. They merely overcome every obstacle in their path as necessary, save for the ones they don't overcome due to lore purposes. This is why Tifa can punch giant sewer monsters to death, but can barely go toe to toe with Scarlet in a slapping contest. Also why random rats you can find on the 3rd disc are stronger than Genova or said marsh snakes. You're not supposed to look THAT into it.

              Anonymous

I'm not talking about from a mechanical perspective. Cloud and the party are in awe, narratively, that Sephiroth was able to do what he did. "Did Sephiroth do this" is basically a meme but in universe, whether the party defeated the Zolom or they ran away, Sephiroth being able to not only win but to also brutalize such a powerful animal by himself is considered unbelievable at that point in the story

And they will still be impressed by it when it happens in the Remake, if only for the sheer size of the serpent being speared as it was, same as it was in the original. There's no difference.

                >characters don't actually get stronger throughout the plot of the game, Cloud is as strong during the reactor mission as he is when they go to the crater
                You have to be joking

They do grow stronger, but the actual plot narrative for that is the party acquiring materia. The more material they acquire, the more they are capable of busting out. As far as the plot goes, Cloud was never level 30 but then he gained some experienced and went up a level to 31. Levelling systems, hit points and all that shit is just a mechanical function of the game's design completely removed from the actual plot. It quite LITERALLY doesn't matter that Cloud was a low level in the original when he ran into a Zolom, so that means in the Remake it can't capture the same feeling because Cloud's already fought someone he shouldn't have been able to fight until later in the original. Power levels don't fucking work like that. The narrative is simply that the challenges the party faces continue to grow but they always overcome them, unless the plot is that they don't. Shit like party levels don't factor in to it at all. Yeah, Cloud survived a fight with Sephiroth in Remake where Sephy was completely toying with him the entire time. That doesn't detract from the fact that Zolom's in Remake Pt 2 are still going to be intimidating when first encountered, and Sephiroth apparently impaling one with ease is still going to be impressive and awe-inspiring.

            >and I don't want this to be interpreted as me seething that they changed the story
Honestly, I'm perfectly ok with them changing the story. Not everything from the original was going to work in the new format or with the new gameplay, plus remakes don't have to be 1:1, why bother remaking it at all? What DOES bother me though is how this didn't end up being a remake at all and is instead a meta sequel to Advent Children. I wanted something that would tell more or less the original story but in a new way, not something that's constantly winking and nodding to me about what happened in the original, then capping it off with a Kingdom Hearts final boss getting BTFO as this fresh and inexperienced party is leaving Midgar. I'm with you. I'm not ready to write it off yet. In fact, I'm in it for the long run because good or bad, I have to see where this goes now, plus I legitimately loved the gameplay and the new life they breathed into the old world and characters. I had my grievances here and there but nothing that can't be fixed in the later parts (namely fixing aerial combat to be a little better than a single slash and then falling down again, or letting you actually modify your party when more than 3 members of the party are there). I'm excited to play more because it was fun. I just wish I didn't have to deal with this wannabe Evangeleon nonsense to get it out have to worry about how they'll have to up the ante being literally killing fate.

at the end of the day there's far worse things than a game that's entirely carried by its core gameplay being really, really good. I was shocked the materia system wasn't just there but actually as fleshed out as it was, especially for an action game. pretty much everything in between battles can go fuck itself but the combat's on point, played the game to completion twice (normal and hard), did almost every side combat mission (beat Weiss but never did beat all the summons).

It's not that good. It's worth playing but the story really ruins it if youactually enjoye FF7 and aren't just a famboy that clapped when he saw the thing he knew. The customization is great for an action game but the core combat system is pretty simplistic and too easy.

Actually officially no. An interview clarifies that Before Crisis and Last Order are a faulty Turk report and that the events of VII are canon whenever they conflict. A Turk, probably Martial Arts Female, arrives after the scene and writes in her report that Sephiroth must've jumped into the Mako, because she finds it inconceivable that he could've possibly lost the fight.

            Definitely.
Sephiroth just went into a rage. He was still evil for it, killing Cloud's mom and a bunch of other innocents. But at least there was motivation. And he got fucking killed right after.
Jenova is just simply existing and doing what she naturally does. Basically another Lavos.
Shinra has done a lot of evil, but really dropping the plate is just an extreme means to solve a problem. AVALANCHE willingly killed innocent people too (until FF7R retconned that)
Hojo is just fucking insane. Evil doer for the sake of being evil and generally a sick fuck. He basically caused all the problems in FF7 and didn't even care.

Of course. VII standalone is a masterpiece. But when I want to add a fun side dish, a thriller noir entry Hispanice addition, I consider VII + BC + LO + the interview an exciting alternate compartmentalized canon (ranked for me as "Notably good" 8/10). BC is actually loyal to VII's setting and characterizations except for Cloud and Red XIII. The rest of the Compilation, with or without Remake, is abysmal with no positive value.

I like how it doesn't nullify the theory about Cloud getting the jump on Sephiroth, since Cloud picks up the buster sword and it's safe to assume Pre-Emptive Attack was still the materia Zack was excited about using. Explains how a literal nobody like Cloud could stab Sephiroth in the back.

      Anonymous

I don't think that Zack had Preemptive. I think preemptive was the only materia that Cloud could get. For the same reason why Cloud was at lv1 in the flashback which is weaker than the lv5 he starts the game with. Despite the things he's saying and the information he's giving, Cloud doesn't know what it physically feels like to be that strong so he can't emulate it in his head. He's larping as Zack but he didn't know what materia he had or how to use it so he couldn't fill in that blank. Therefore flashback Cloud just hides behind Sephiroth the entire time.

        Anonymous

I think Cloud was disassociating and it's safe to say that everything he thought he said and did in the flashback actually applied to Zack. His excitement about the new materia even matches Zack's energy.

Not true, his true self was talking to him throughout the game, long before he ended up in the lifestream with Tifa.

Cloud's experiments involved him taking an indefinite sauna bath in pure undistilled soul juice, that's probably how he maintained a connection to his prior self back in the lifestream. He visits it physically with Tifa when he encounters all those shades of himself and finally reconverges with them. That's where Cloud really was, which is the afterlife. Cloud died.

    [...]

Cloud's soul/true self remained trapped in the Lifestream up until the point that he revisits it and you discover all of this, so it's probably safe to say he fucking died and was reanimated with Jenova cells in the experiments in the Shinra mansion. Like, he still walked the earth, sure, but his literal soul was still removed from his body.

The more you look back at the older Final Fantasy games, the sillier things get. They're still great, but you can see why they were never going to do a straight remake. On the other hand, the FFX Remake will be just fine being 1:1.

Cloud wanted to be billy badass to impress a girl so hard that he larped as one but ultimately had to accept the he wasn't (but he still got to hit that)
meanwhile sephiroth over there like "hey nice cheap shot moron come 1v1 me in the Void you won't" and gets btfo because of power creep

Everyone talks about the environmental/ capitalism message but a recurring theme in the game that I don't really see people talking about is the importance of history. The obvious one is Cloud. Yes I know any the Jenova brainwashing but Sephiroth was only able to get as far as he did because Cloud voluntarily forgot his own history to RP as a man he saw as better than him. Once Cloud accepted his own personality Sephiroth couldn't prey on his insecurities anymore. But that idea is kind of everywhere. There are no named nations in the world, it's all Shinra. The last one is Wutai and I bet in 2 generations no one will remember it's name either. Icicle Area used to be called the Knowlespole. Barret mentions that Midgar used to be a series of villages but no one remembers their names anymore because it all belongs to Shinra now. Hell the LifeStream lost its name. LifeStream explains what the purpose of the river of life is but now no one knows what that is. It's Mako now, the energy source that belongs to Shinra. And I think that's cool.

Still I like your contrast between Cloud pretending to be strong and Cloud actually being strong

        >those in power will make you abandon your own heritage in their bid for more power
        scary
The thing about Cloud's arc is that it concludes in his own eyes by arriving at "I'm not actually strong" but it isn't true. Stuff like that lends to there being real potential for sequel material for the character to continue to grow but Goddamn do they flanderize the shit out of all of those characters in everything since. I do like him alright in the Remake though, he's still kind of a dork sometimes and I appreciate that

A long time ago when the remake was announced I argued that Barret still had relevance in the modern day because he epitomized the kind of person left behind when technology made broad swathes of the labor pool obsolete: a coal miner, already a fossil in his own time, forced to build the very thing that killed his dreams just to survive, forced to watch his wife die of a probably preventable illness, tragically triggered the events that cause his town to get wiped out in reprisal for sabotage. I really hope they lean on him in Part 2; in a lot of ways he was the heart of the group despite being extremely dumb. He deserves to be remembered as more than a Mr. T knockoff (this was entirely the translation team's fault)

          Anonymous

I wouldn't call Barret dumb, just impulsive. He knew what he was doing the whole time. He knew he was just making it up to himself how he sold out his own hometown to the Shinra and dragging other innocent lives down in the process. But it's all he knew how to do to make it right, and he had to make it right.

          Anonymous

The great thing about Barret is that despite his flaws, despite his real reasons for doing shit, he was essentially right in the end. Radical acts were the only way to prevent Shinra from killing the planet. There wasn't any kind of democratic solution, Shinra were a corporation not a government.

what do people usually mean when they say he was larping as zack? wasn't he larping as the idealized version of himself, cloud, the hero he set out to be when he left home at 14? with his own weakness and desire/will to not be seen by tifa in the state he was in at the train-station, he managed to trigger the scells/sephiroth's will that triggered the jcells to use mimic on tifa to read her memories and reshape what happened 5 years ago to where it was him, cloud who returned standing next to his idol sephiroth at the gates, parading around town taking pictures.

in reality it was zack who did all of those things, sure, but all memories of zack were suppressed so his fantasy of returning to nibelheim as the hero he set out to be would be believable. i guess it was like a self insert, but i wouldn't say he was larping as zack, that gives people weird ideas. i don't think the ego would allow for that anyway, ultimately we may imagine our selves in someone else's role and we might fake confidence, but we're still us. cloud isn't a victim, everything that happened to him is his own doing, his own desire. jenova's cells were just a tool to make it happen.

what i want to know is why did barret/red13 unquestioningly give cloud back the black materia when he asked for it? cloud already demonstrated that he couldn't be trusted with the black materia when he had a meltdown and just handed it to the sephiroth clone in the temple of the ancients.
both barret and red13 knew full well that cloud's mental state is dubious at best, but all it took was a "hey could i see that black materia for a second?" for them to hand it over no questions asked.

Can I go on an autistic rant about the dick sucking that goes on with Sephiroth and Gackt, especially in the mid 2000s?

Kingdom Hearts 1 featured both Cloud and Sephiroth. Originally Cloud was supposed to be Vincent but some shades of his design was given to Cloud like the Red Cloak and the demonic wing. Sephiroth was given a black raven wing not only to contrast Cloud but also as a reference to the one-wing angel. It was just a silly little redesign to make them fit into the Kingdom Hearts world.

But for some fucking reason Crisis Core decided to canonize the black wing. Now the Black Wing is an indicator that a person is carrying cells related to Jenova. Even though that was never a thing in the original game. The one-wing angel in the original game was meant to show that Sephiroth was approaching godhood. So we can think Kingdom Hearts for the stupid fucking Wing appearing in every Final Fantasy 7 related instance since. And more amusing than any of this is that because Genesis is now a canonical character in The Final Fantasy 7 universe, that means he beat Sephiroth to the black wing by 5 years. That shitty Gackt fan fiction character who was motivated by frustration at being a Sephiroth knock off just turned Sephiroth into a knock off of himself.

You articulated and unpacked exactly why the iconography in nu-FF7 is scrambled dogshit. I never really bothered to deconstruct it but there you go.

It completely ruins the aesthetic of the original game. When SE released that render of Sephiroth with his gay wing I knew remake was going to suck. Pic related. That shit is ok for KH or I guess Dissidia but actually linking black wings to Jenova cells is just so dumb. And then there is also the feline eyes...mixed with wings. it makes no sense.

It's a JRPG cliche but I think the way that FFVII does it is interesting. It's like he's the game's Messiah except its version of God is an evil space alien that parasitically latched onto the life force, assumed influence over it, and retroactively made itself a Godlike influence over the world with the ability to make Sephiroth into a deity. It's like it's purely incidental at the end of the day, not of any grand design, just a John Carpenter monster that sucks up and controls so much soul juice that it can imbue its chosen son with God powers. Scifi meets mythology. Fuckin' rad.

I look at Sephiroth as the bastard child of Shinra and Jenova. Unlike most people, Shinra knows what they're doing. The know that Mako is the lifeblood of the planet. They know and believe all the Cetra legends including the Promised Land. And rather than be Enlightened by that knowledge they bastardized Cetra lore to try and create a Cetra child for no other reason than to exploit more money out of a world they already owned. Even Jenova is more noble. Jenova was just an organism looking to feed. And Sephiroth is the "best" of both worlds. A complete monster that would've taken the lives of everyone who ever had or will live to use for himself. I don't think anything could embody Shinra or Jenova more.

well I liked that in the final zone of FF7 there was a lot of harrowing imagery about life and biology, wombs, embroyos. It really felt like when Sephiroth changed forms it was because he absorbed some forbidden genetic truth via all of the mako absorption.

I think Advent Children and Final Fantasy X-2 were Pandora's Box for SE. Prior to X every entry had to be its own self-contained thing. The story had to set up its premise, move that premise to its logical end, and then close the book. But now each entry has to leave the potential to be its own Universe open. Final Fantasy 13 being a clumsy attempt, Final Fantasy 15 being clumsy as fuck, and Final Fantasy 7 being the apotheosis to the stupid extended Universe bullshit. We all point and laugh at Final Fantasy 15 for being unfinished and for having character arcs being chopped out of the actual game to be sold as DLC, but with Final Fantasy 7 nobody can even agree on what the fuck even happened because of the entries all contradicting each other. Until we get to present day where the concept of narrative integrity is the fucking antagonist of the story.

      Of Final Fantasy 7?

Super megacorp Shinra has functionally taken over to world with their weapons and their unique reactors that sucks The Souls of the Dead out of the earth and turns them into electricity. Main character Cloud is a mercenary hired by a terrorist organization to blow up the reactors and allegedly save the planet. A couple of missions later and Cloud bumps into a street girl named Aeris who can hear the cries of the planet. They fight in the party discovers that Shinra created an Unstoppable super soldier named sephiroth that everyone thought was dead but apparently is still alive. See Aeris is an Ancient, a race of people thought to be extinct. Shinra wanted to create a person with the abilities of the Cetra so they could use that to find the promised land, a hidden place with Infinite spiritual energy that that could slap a reactor on and make infinite money. What they didn't understand was that the Cetra corpse they took DNA from wasn't actually a Cetra. It was an alien monster, basically The Thing, that tried to feed on the planets spirit energy and was responsible for wiping out the Cetra in the first place. Cloud chases Sephiroth around the world realizing as bad as Shinra is, Sephiroth is worse. Sephiroth reveals his plan of attracting a giant meteor towards the planet, cracking it open to get at all the spiritual energy locked inside. Meaning Sephiroth is as much a parasite as his "mother." Sephiroth continuously gaslights Cloud until he has a mental breakdown, kills Aeris, and successfully calls Meteor. His other waifu helps him recover only to realize that the whole world is in chaos now at the literal end of the world is visible in the sky. The planet is trying to destroy all threats to itself including Humanity since humans are responsible for just as much damage to it as sephiroth. But the twist is that before Aeris died she begged the planet to show mercy to humans and the planet heard her.

      Anonymous

The planet can't defend itself because sephiroth is keeping it bound and so cloud and the party have to dive into the center of the world and kill him off. Holy fires but it fires too late to stop the meteor and so all of the spirits of the planet have to join in to help and then meteor is destroyed.

That is the extremely abridged version.

But even then we can't skip Cosmo Canyon since not only is that Red XIIIs hometown but it's also where we get the explanation for the structure of the planet and how big the stakes really are. There's also Corel where we get Barret's backstory. Unless SE decides to sell that as DLC or some shit.

Chocobo Ranch, Bone Village and Fort Condor are not critical for the main story. Not saying they won't or shouldn't be in, just saying if they need to cut locations they'd be the first to go.

Part 2 and 3 are most likely to follow a similar but still completely different path than the original game so they can end it on whatever point they want just like Remake did.

Deathblow rules because iirc it stacks with added effect. I love hitting with a beefy physical and inflicting poison or sleep on top of it. So weak that the remake only included the defensive capability of it in the "ward" materia.

In my case I stacked Deathblow with Added Cut on a Powersoul Tifa. I know everyone says all the characters are the same but Tifa is uniquely a fucking nuke in this game

Which weapon was Powersoul again? Was that the one that gave her a buff when she suffers a status ailment? Or was it tied to HP? I remember there being one that I kept on her where I gave her the Curse Ring and had her dumping 9999 earlier than anybody else, in like disc 1.

Powersoul gets 2x power if Tifa is a low health and 4x power of she's suffering from status. And yes they stack. So while your party is dealing 500 damage per attack, Tifa is shitting out 4000 damage before the Temple of the Ancients

I was one of the mooks that played Remake first expecting it to be an actual remake of the OG game, and when it ended I was so confused about everything that happened at the end, I was ready to write Ganker off as being retarded again. I went back and played the OG last year and it's unironically kino. I wish I would've known going in that Remake was trying to be a sequel.

I'm not going to screech REMAKE BAD but what I will say is that where there's smoke, there's fire. I dislike the the twist in two ways. If you played FF7 then the twist is bad because it changes the story in ways that fucks up the original game. If you didn't play FF7 they the twist is still bad because it's subverting a narrative of a game you never played before.

To be fair, SE did never even try to clarify that Remake is a sequel and just rode high on the "look guys, we did what you asked and remade FF7" hype as hard as they could and it only became apparent it was a sequel if you play it or watch the last 2 hours of it on youtube or something, The subttitle "Remake" is basically a play on the words meaning and refers to the sequel remaking the future to basically be different than the OG game so they can do dumb shit like keep Zack and Aerith alive.

Not just the story but the world building and progression too. The way you go from a buggy to a boat to a submarine to an airship. This is why I consider FF7R to be the anti-FF7. FF7 was a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. It never bored you for a second. You were constantly in the midst of crazy shit happening. Meanwhile FF7R is the literal definition of filler and time waste design. I am repulsed by how little SE thinks of its fans, that they can just rehash UE4 corridors endlessly and hoping we'd be impressed by it. The fact that the game wasn't universally panned ET-style on release is a disgrace.

For having played it recently, FF7 suffers from the same problems as FF6. Until the end of Midgar it's a gigantic tutorial with no fun allowed, zero customisation excepting an enemy attack materia that you can miss (and I missed it). And the rest of the CD1 is riddled with shitty mini games, boring slow parts like fort falcon. FF6 was the same, taking 12~15 hours before giving you the magicites and only really opening in the second half.

        CD2 is tremendously better.

I just don't understand why people got so attached to Aeris. She's barely in the group or available most of the time.
    >Only available in Midgar during the Church part, gets kidnapped after
    >She's babbling during the Cosmo Canyon part, not available.
    >The village under the gold Saucer is centered on Barrett
    >She's once again not available during the Pyramid part (if I'm not mistaken)
    >Junon is focused on Cloud infiltrating a base and kissing a e-boi
    >She's leaving the party once you get close to the village of her ancestors.
She's barely there at all honestly. The only part where she can be relevant is the gold saucer date part but you need to have done specific shit to up your date-o-meter with her (got Tifa's and it was fun)

Honestly after all these years hearing about how it's sad and shocking, I never heard about the rest of the game which is honestly plain better. CD2 is where the game goes full Evangelion and goes full crazy and the plot twist of the actual memories of Cloud is one of the best parts of the game, mindbreak, Tifa actually confronting the fake memories, it's great.

I played this game last year, and I honestly feel like people have been bandwagonning for years, but never got past the CD1. I felt the same with FF6 which has an absolutely incredible part with the beginning of the world of Ruins leading to the Falcon, and yet people never talk about it.

    I just don't understand.

I think part of it is just hype. It's one of the most well known twists in gaming, I knew about it before I even knew about FF7, so people jump on like it was some defining moment in their lives. That being said she is given some prominence and importance to the plot only to suddenly be cut down. It's not just a momentary injury like you'd expect in other games, she has no dying speech to make her sound more heroic, no mcguffin solution to bring her back, just poof dead. Having the party gather around to mourn her was a nice way of really driving home the point.

I only played this a few years ago already knowing every twist, thinking Sephiroth was just going to be grandaddy of anime villain trope, a look often imitated by people on early deviantart to show how edgy they were, but I was really surprised by how well the game handles it. Him being introduced as a war hero seemingly gone rogue was engaging. That scene in the library with him just pacing back and forth learning about his past was a great highlight moment.

      Anonymous

Sephiroth is a fairly compelling character. It's a shame that one cutscene with him in the fire and KH has given most people a weird view of how he actually acted in the game

        Anonymous

I blame his theme song. It's so over the top epic and iconic that Sephiroth stopped being a character with an arc and instead turned into a trope. Even the remake seems to fall for this with them doing the wall of fire so early on because he's just a trope. But I guess it's more of a sequel than anything.

Something that's pretty good about his characterization is that heating isn't presented as a bad person just because he was standoffish. He's focused on the assignment but he takes time out and ask his subordinates about how they feel about being home and to offer them leave to see their families when he has spare time. He knows he's different but he wasn't necessarily a villain until he read that research and became disconnected from Humanity as a whole

Forgot to mention that. I loved that he wasn't just some sort of silent brute or looking down on the other man before the reveal, it would've made his turn heel a lot less meaningful.

one winged angel isn't even his theme, this is

and it fits him perfectly, it's ominous, menacing, and hair raising
it's used perfectly in the original game and elevates sephiroth's threatening presence to something truly memorable
yet for some reason the only thing people care about is le final boss theme that's supposed to be out of place compared to everything else

            Anonymous

it's really gay how the remake abjectly dumbs down Cloud and Sephiroth's relationship to "you killed my mommy and my hometown, I h8 u." in the original Sephiroth's presence is masterfully alluded to and built up before being drip fed leading up to the climax of disc 1, and nobody, Cloud included, really have a clue what he's up to only that it can't be good. (Cloud's source: dude trust me)

              Anonymous

Well there's also the matter that Cloud wanted to be Sephiroth. That was his motivation. Cloud thought he was weak so if he could be strong, like sephiroth, then he would be satisfied. And Sephiroth uses that to gaslight him into doing the things he does. Sephiroth is a bad role model. Everyone looks to him as a hero but he is not. And when cloud accepts himself and that he's good enough and he doesn't have to pretend, neither Sephiroth or Jenova can control him anymore. As a matter of fact Cloud outright styles on Sephiroth with a move he invented and is completely unique to him

              >in the original Sephiroth's presence is masterfully alluded to and built up before being drip fed leading up to the climax of disc 1
They deliberately got rid of this buildup because they felt their audience was too familiar with Sephiroth for it to work twice. Remake in general has a lot of issues with pacing because they padded out the Midgar section with a shit ton of filler and also tried to cram in Sephiroth's backstory in between all that shit.

              Anonymous

The part they always omit regarding Sephiroth is that you're never fighting the real Sephiroth. The real Sephiroth died in the reactor before the events of the game, you're always fighting meat puppets controled by Jenova, and Cloud's fucked up memories fill in the blanks.

I supposed SE over the years have prefered to retcon the whole mysterious menacing antagonist side as his real personality, but the Sephiroth you're encountering is closer to a crazy cultist than a mastermind.

I always assumed it’s a bit of both. Sephiroth was holding Jenova’s head when he fell into the reactor and it became a case of Sephiroth’s will keeping his wants but incorporating Jenova’s own modus operandi of being a space parasite. You see this with Sephiroth’s motivating factors prior to the reactor: he assumed Jenova was a Cetra and desired the ruination of humanity for not only creating him as a fucked up science experiment but also for destroying what he assumed was his race. When he got all the information in the Lifestream and learned he’s actually a fucked up space parasite chimera he also took in Jenova’s ideal of destroying all life on the planet and absorbing the energy to go out into space and do it again.

Functionally Sephiroth is just a smarter space parasite once they were attuned. The only real personal flickerings of himself is his conscious choice to kill President Shinra right after he gets the Jenova torso to bust out of HQ and the sadistic delight in tormenting the fuck out of Cloud since he both defeated him but also brought him to the state of apotheosis as a risen planet busting space parasite 2.0. Killing Aerith is mostly done to service that Cloud torment and prevent an annoying contingency to the god parasite plan.

Speaking of Aerith though, I kind of suspect his goal in 7R is to not kill Aerith since her death and presence in the Lifestream is what saved the Planet in the end by reinforcing Holy to repel Meteor, not Holy itself.

I think it would be neat if instead Seph's motive in Remake is to keep Aerith alive specifically. He's warned Cloud about the 7 seconds and I think he's going to play it like he's helping Cloud correct history by playing on his attachment to Aerith.

I didn't even click the link but I already know you're talking about those chosen by the planet. And if you are and I want to tell you that you are absolutely correct because that Sephiroth's character. He genuinely believes that he's the heir to the entire planet. And that his mother deserved it and the people who took it from her deserve to die. I genuinely believe that Final Fantasy 7 is being written by its own fame at this point. It's not a story, it's a greatest hits highlight reel. It's the video game equivalent of a YouTube AMV except it was sponsored by Square Enix themselves

Is there any other jrpg with a main cast as likeable as FF7's?

I prefer the X party. They fill similar personality roles but part of it is that X has stronger tech and therefore can afford to show off a lot more of them interacting and talking.

It's kind of weird for me. With the PS1 and SNES games (not just Final Fantasy but other JRPGs as well) it's very easy for me to accept the minimal emoting from the characters. My mind just kind of fills in the blanks from the combination of writing and the small gestures/movements that the characters do.
But the more advanced that the graphics get, more all the the canned animations stick out to me, like in Yakuza games or FFXV. FFX is probably the last FF game that I could play without being bothered by it.
        It's honestly weird.

I can understand that. For me it does depend on the game rather than speaking more generally but there are games where the more minimal interactions end up feeling more meaningful than a highly complex, technology impressive, full motion capture performance.

6 and 9 off the top of my head.
i really liked the cast in bof2 but the dialogue options are really limited. same with bof3.
dq 11 is a newer game that has a really likeable cast.

chrono trigger you might like, but the characters in the game don't really grow like they did in ff7.

    >original game builds up the twist all through the first disc and it takes until halfway of the second one for the truth to be finally revealed
    >remake pretty much spells the whole thing out during Midgar
I seriously fucking dislike the Remake. Yes, you could make the argument that everybody already knows the twist, so they are putting a different spin on the story. But as is evident, plenty of people aren't/weren't aware of it, and they did actually want to play the Remake for modern take on the game that was still faithful to the story, instead of some kind of weird meta experience.
Fuck the whole shit with Sephiroth in the Remake too.

FF7 is a game made for men and FF8 a game made for women. Both are good and valid, though I personally prefer 8.

Yes. Probably why Cloud's story doesn't resonate as much with me compared to Aerith and

FF7 was one of those games that I went into knowing full well what to expect because I bought the strategy guide years before I bought the actual game. Everyone in my school was talking about it and my parents wouldn't buy me a Playstation so I read the strategy guide cover to cover just so I could talk about it with my friends.

I didn't have the strategy guide but I did have the manual that came with the game and for just weeks and weeks I would draw the characters inside of it while in school

Cloud as a character is one identify with more than any fictional character so despite his fame I actually do hold both him and his game very near and dear to my heart

Should I play this game? Which version is the best? Also are there any mods to make the field avatars not look like lego men? I've only played FF2, 6, and 8 and enjoy all of them.

      >Should I play this game?
6, 7 and 10 are often seen as the best FF has to offer so you'll probably enjoy it.
      >Which version is the best?
      Emulated is probably the best.
      >Also are there any mods to make the field avatars not look like lego men?
I believe the PC version has a mod community, one of which is an update to the models to make them more high-res but personally I think it clashes a bit too heavily with the rest of the game. After a while you get used to the lego proportions and the game does a decent job with showing some emotion through body movement so I don't think it's really necessary.

A liquid that doesn't absorb in to the skin should, in theory, exist.
The skin ain't perfectly solid, but there should be A liquid possible that wouldn't be able to enter it, either because it is so viscous that it can't, or via other means.

Jenova cells make them durable. It's the same reason why Cloud survives his fall all the way to Aerith's church. Speaking of which, the same rationale also saves another character earlier in the franchise.
