Not really. It just introduced so many core aspects of the franchise going forward and brought the online to a modern game quality, that you simply regard it as the "standard"

XY had a bunch of QOL mechanic improvements. Critical hits being 1.5, a lot of small buffs to Pokemon, all parents being able to pass egg moves and hidden abilities, egg moves being relearnable, ability capsules, destiny knot IV passing etc. Two of its best features, Super Training and PSS were removed in Gen 7 for some reason.
Problem with XY was that the game itself is bad with piss easy NPCs who don't Mega their Pokemon and nonsensical story.

      >all parents being able to pass egg moves and hidden abilities, egg moves being relearnable (...) destiny knot IV passing
All beating around the bush. The fundamental problem is the breeding system itself.
That the problems of it are acknowledged and partly alleviated but not just done away with entirely is stupid.

True on hindsight but at the time it was a massive step forward, especially because it came out at a time when hacking was practically unavailable. Powersaves weren't out and CFW weren't accessible to the average person.

They were the beginning of the end but unlike swsh they do have redeeming qualities.

The region design was fun, it felt massive with a lot of variety.
The massive local Pokedex is what should have been the standard going forward.
Mega evolution remains the only fun battle gimmick.
The online system was the best of the franchise, literally took steps backwards with Gen 7 and 8.
It was still on the 3DS so the animations and the visual quality is good for the system.
The ending song was very sovl.

    made breeding drastically better
made EV training more intuitive and less tedious
    drastically improved online
rebalanced the type chart to nerf dragon and steel
made triple/rotation battles more relevant in the game instead of limiting them to just a tiny handful of shitty campaign battles

Yeah, as I said, XY had a lot of mechanics and QOL improvements. I'd say it's almost a mini gen 3 in modernizing the mechanics.
As I also said though, the game itself was notoriously bland and unmemorable. Its online was probably one of the peak onlines ever but the game itself was a miss so returning to it nowadays is harder.

Nope, it's general consensus. I was there at the time. Even back then, nobody talked about the story other than to make fun of Lysandre. People did theorize stuff with AZ and the war but GF never followed up on that.

Also, no, that's a you problem and sounds like you're just a newcomer. Gen 5 is known for its story and the previous games are generic but serviceable. Gen 6 and 8 are well known for being extra shit to the point of retardation.

I still can't figure out why AZ is in the game. The only reason to include him is if you're setting up for a sequel where he'll actually play a role, but if that was the case you'd think they'd have used in Alola like they did Zygarde after cancelling Z.

To explain why the ultimate weapon exists, and hence why mega evolution exists and so the main villain can get the key for it for his plan.

Why do people always come up with the most retarded critiques of XY’s story possible that makes it obvious they simply didn’t pay attention to the game? He has more reason to be in the game than the fucking 7 Sages do.

                >To explain why the ultimate weapon exists
That's an infodump in one scene that could have been done by having Professor Sycamore or Calem/Serena read from a history book. It isn't nearly enough to justify having this 12-foot-tall immortal homeless man who shows up several times.

                >He has more reason to be in the game than the fucking 7 Sages do.
To be clear, I'm saying that AZ has a lot of potential for interesting storytelling, and he isn't used effectively. I'm not saying the character shouldn't exist, but that he's used so poorly that they shouldn't have bothered including him unless they were planning on expanding on him later. Having him show up in three scenes, one of which is just a cameo, leaves the player expecting more and feeling unsatisfied.

                >To be clear, I'm saying that AZ has a lot of potential for interesting storytelling, and he isn't used effectively.
This is retarded logic. Every character in every single Pokemon game has "more potential for interesting storytelling". I guess Pokemon games should have no characters then.

                >How is this better than simply having a character who has the key for the weapon?
Because it doesn't require introducing a 12-foot immortal who does nothing but dump backstory.

He's a foil to Lysandre. The main theme of the game is about the bonds you create with others and how connections allow you to create a better world. Lysandre's final moments are him rejecting the idea of seeing others points of views and getting crushed to death (Death), while AZ breaks out of his curse by making the effort to engage with others in the final parade and is rewarded with Floette coming back to life (Life)

                Anonymous

I like this connection since AZ is Lysandre's ancestor, effectively telling new blood not to repeat the family's mistakes.

Yes, competitive QOL improvements do not make the games good. Pokemon has spent so much time streamlining and making "QOL improvements" that there's basically nothing left to them anymore.

Pokemon games are RPGs. Good RPGs have interesting stories, places to explore, and challenges to overcome.

Older Pokemon games had "weak stories" because it was (your) story that you make with (your) mons. It didn't need a bunch of characters or events, because the story (you) create by catching and raising mons to explore cool places and overcome challenges is so inherently compelling.

The newer games (starting with Gen 6) have basically removed cool places to explore by giving up on level design. Routes are mostly straight lines with no thought required to traverse them. There are no dungeons, and few points of interest.

Do you remember trying to find your way through the sandstorm in Hoenn? What about all of the victory roads? The relief you would feel when exiting a cave so you could relax? Do you remember finding and exploring cool points of interest like the Eterna Chateau?

The games were never *hard* but they did used to require more thought than they do now. They would use the routes and dungeons to drain your resources and then throw your dickhead rivals at you to make you fight harder.

They would use strong trainers at key moments had more than 3 pokemon and sometimes even put up level gaps so you would have to lose.

Whitney's Miltank, Cynthia's Garchomp... these were memorable because they were hard. Do you remember who you used to first overcome those battles?

Do you remember who used to beat the Gen 6 champion? Or even who her signature Pokemon was? Or her name?

                >Whitney's Miltank, Cynthia's Garchomp... these were memorable because they were hard. Do you remember who you used to first overcome those battles?
I'll be honest with you, I could never relate to any of this. I don't remember any big challenges in mainline games outside the Stadium or Colosseum titles, because they emphasize strategy and team building. At most I remember shitting on Lance with a Raikou and Suicune combo in Gen 2.

                >Do you remember who used to beat the Gen 6 champion? Or even who her signature Pokemon was? Or her name?
I remember Diantha pretty well? She makes a few appearances as a popular celebrity in the Region. She gives you the Gardevoir Mega Stone as part of that post-game sidequest. Also her battle arena is nice. I think its weird that she and this game are so maligned for being easy, but that's my experience.

as the only games that ever get story compliments consistently are gen 1, where the story is mostly non-involved and only really told through indirect interactions for the sake of exploration and not directly told to the player
Playing a Pokemon game for the story is like saying you are done with a WarioWare game after the credits roll.

And that contributes to the way the story is told. It's world building that doesn't get shoved in your face. Then again, like I said the story isn't particularly special of course. But it's not completely retarded like Gen 6 and 8. They're the FE Conquest of Pokemon. Although Conquest actually had a good campaign and level design. That's just the general consensus, not my personal opinion.

I agree with most of this. But I'm just saying Gen 6 did have its things it did right. Especially compared to the future gens that removed more things than added.
I do remember Diantha and Mega Gardevoir, yes. And I will admit she was probably the least imposing and relevant Champion along with Alder.
