There's really nothing in it that you need to be smart for, if you just want to beat the game it's very easy to messily brute force, if you want to make something efficient though then sure that can take some thinking

I haven't heard of any game going up on price due to inflation. $70 PS5/Xfridge games are just because Microsoft and Sony are massive buttholes since they also bumped up the games to $60 with PS3/360 whole Nintendo stuck with $50.

Here's a graph of my country's inflation rate of the late decade or so. This is the first time in recent memory where I see people jacking up prices instantly in just a few months, and where people are not even surprised because the media is bombarding us that "INFLATION IS GONNA RUIN THE ECONOMY".
So now we're stuck in a place where it's now socially acceptable to price fix shit to ridiculous degrees because of mass hysteria.

But small businesses usually don't make that much money and are in a similar spot to you, the price to make their products went up but they didn't exactly get a "raise" aka more revenue

I don’t know where your morons get the idea that inflation isn’t a real thing, it’s obviously politically motivated but I can’t even tell what angle you’re coming from. Help me out here, is it a israeli scheme to swindle the hardworking white man, or a nefarious plot to discredit the government after it exponentially increased the money supply over the past 3 years which of course *should* have had no negative consequences whatsoever?

I get that you're talking in a general sense, but... Suppliers? This is a video game, a finished one at that. Development has already been paid for using pre-inflation dollars, so at this point it costs exactly $0 to "produce and ship" a new copy of Factorio to the steam store. Even Steam itself charges a percentage instead of a flat fee, so it's not like Steam has suddenly forced their hand either.
Clearly their motive is to boost sales on their 3 year old game without just running a sale like every other sensible developer, taking advantage of FOMO using a stick instead of a carrot. I guarantee you they wouldn't be lowering the price if for whatever reason we were experiencing DEflation.

for this product, the labor of piracy and the risk of malware is the effective sales price.

sales, coupons, bogos are all tactics that sellers use to encourage customers to buy things which they do not need. that is the fomo.

morons in thus thread dont understand inflation. Not surprised. All it means is that the supply of dollars has been increased, so the value of each individual dollar has decreased. You money is worth less, so of course you're gonna need to charge more to make the same amount of value you were before inflation. That doesnt mean you shouldnt be mad, but dont be mad at private businesses who had no say in the matter. Be mad at the Federal Reserve and the big banks that push for it because they want to strangle out anything they dont control.

because that makes things worse. You're basically saying "the government should force people to stay poor". price controls didnt work in either of the cases you mentioned and they never will.

How can a dedicated fanbase be monetized if the game is just a one and done purchase without any micro transactions? Last I checked, I don't think Factorio has a cash shop or a battle pass or anything else that would make anyone spend money past their initial purchase price.

I think they're right in not wanting the game to be on sale. You wouldn't want your work to be devalorized.
Maybe it's pride or ego but I can understand that. However the factorio devs are czech and cost of living there is way lower than western europe or the US so even the base game being 30euros is insulting to their own people when people earn 600 a month.

I don't like this line of thinking. It's like if you argued that ideas and anything creative that can be monetized should be adjusted for inflation and in the context of videogames where you have infinite supply it just sounds like greed more than anything else.

Is the dev of this game legitimately moronic? Does he believe triple A publishers like EA, Activision and Ubisoft lower the prices of their older games and put them on sales out of the goodness of their heart and not because it leads to more sales and higher profit?

      Anonymous

That can happen if your company shits out Call Of Duty 1, then 2, then 3, then 4. Lowering 1's price is better.

      But there's no Factorio 2 or 3.

        Anonymous

but other indie devs do it too. Hollow Knight, Valheim, Hades, Vampire Survivors, Stardew Valley etc are frequently on sale and they made a lot more money than Factorio. A lot of that is in fact thanks to them going on sale and reaching a much larger audience that would otherwise not have tried those games. Face it, the factorio devs simply don't understand how business works. They got lucky and they made their money despite of that, but they sure as hell left millions of $ on the table due to their stubbornness, greed and autism.

Reading between the lines they had to scrap a bunch of development and try to re-do it

The price only increased because it hit full release which is pretty standard for early access games. Either way the whole thing is a moot point. Old games decrease their price or go on 75% sales because they either are superseded by a new game or have 100+ bucks worth of DLC.
For example, Pathfinder Kingmaker is being sold for pennies because there's very little reason to play it when WOTR exists.

Factorio on the other hand has no replacement. It is still the definition of factory automation game.
Inb4 Satisfactory / DSP, those games are not even close to being a replacement for Factorio.

However I do think that the price of Factorio should drop when the expansion comes out, or it should be on a 25% sale or something.

      Anonymous

I'm not sure how to best describe this, but basically Factorio is a game for autistic people who find enjoyment in things working well.

When you build a shitty factory layout that can't be expanded and that is difficult to route resources through, you physically cringe
When you build a beautiful factory layout that scales well, that has optimal throughput, that is aesthetically pleasing and that can be copy pasted easily, you feel euphoric. You look at it and you think to yourself, yep that's a nice factory. And you copy paste it a few times and you marvel at the beauty of your own design.

This way of thinking or maybe rather way of feeling applies to your perception of the game itself.
When you see something like Oxygen Not Included having a shitty laggy UI, 10 fps in the mid game and piss and shit unfixed bugs that have been in the game for years, you phyiscally cringe
When you see Factorio in its magnificent bug-freeness, optimized performance, rich modding API and highly functional UI, you feel admiration for both the game itself and the developers who accomplished this feat

That is why some people are defensive over Factorio. It's not the personality of the devs themselves at all, they rarely interact with the community as far as I know. It's about the game itself, and how you perceive the devs based on the game that they created

I think games released after 2008 should cost less than $10 because they're all shit

    >anyone that hasn't bought it doesn't have autism or is unable to afford it
    >anyone with autism and a single brain cell just pirates it

There is quite literally no reason to increase the price. Was it autism?
    I bet it was.

H-haha I would NEVER do such thing, I definitely would leave my source of income or salary go down as inflation rises!

I would do that shit in a heartbeat, I guess I'm salty everything is going up but my wage is the same.

    don't matter, I pirate anyway.

    t. person with one gorillion bought games on steam, gog, uplay and ea play. I pirate factorio exclusively because of the devs dumb "we don't give discounts" policy

    >"we are selling the game based on what we feel it is worth"

so what's the problem exactly? nothing has changed. If you want to blame anyone, blame the fed for printing money

I don't get the backlash, if hyperinflation happened and $1 in 2020 was equivalent to $1 000 in 2025, would people still be upset that the game gets a price increase to $30 000?

      >would people still be upset that the game gets a price increase to $30 000?
Yes. These people have no fricking idea how the economy works. They just want to yell at people because of things they know nothing about.

factorio devs are some of the best in the industry.
$35 is nothing for this game, although I think I bought it for 20 back in the day.

yeah I'd rank terraria devs way over factorio, but factorio are still in the top tier even with their pricing.

Just removed the game from my wishlist. I thought the game looked like shit and the gameplay was bad, but I wanted to buy it to support the rise of an indie dev.

I'm glad I never found the game on a decent sale otherwise I would have supported this scumbag.

    Wishlist status: removed.
Game status: Told steam to ignore and hide it from my store.

The game never goes on sale, but you can imagine it costs $60 and has a $25 sale if you want (Factorio is better than any $60 game)

Is this an ironic baitpost? You are not supporting the rise of an indie dev if you buy a game that came out 5 years ago and was a commercial success.
And if you did want to support the devs without wanting to play the game, why wait for a sale?

Why yes. The CEOs have increased their own salary high enough to drag the average up accordingly.

man imagine if nintendo or sony did this, the shitposting would never end
frick imagine activision or EA saying some shit like 'well inflation is a thing so we're raising the prices of all our old games', they would get eaten alive by gamers and the press

this is so shit, thank frick it's just an indie dev with 1 game
