They went heavy handed on the Rabbids this time. All the OCs are Rabbids and they have Rabbid Rosalina as a playable character but not real Rosalina. They got rid of the stupid aftershave on the OC Rabbids but not the ones based off the Mario cast and I hate the Rabbid Lumas.

This. Their expectations were probably too high. Just because the first Mario & Rabbids game turned out to be good doesn't mean people are suddenly climbing over themselves for the next one.

Honestly it looks pretty good, I look forward to buying the gold edition with all the dlc when it goes on sale for $15 in a few months.

The first game people went in expecting Nintendo evergreen pricing. Mario games don't normally crater in price. Seeing it go on sale for so low prompted people to wait for the same to happen for the sequel.

This too. I got the first one on a big sale with all the DLC for like $15 and was pleasantly surprised with the game and happy with what I paid for it. I wouldn't have paid full price though so I decided to just do the same thing with this and wait.

      >Rabbids
I'm surprised Nintendo lets Mario near those things.

Oddly the Rabbids worked well with Mario. I actually didn't hate them

Isn't that the same thing that happened with Rayman Legends? Origins came out, had a small budget, was a surprise success, and so Ubisoft goes all in on the sequel and it ends up "underperforming". I'm thinking it's less the game and more their own fault

      Anonymous

both rayman games sold like shit. also wasn't origins the more expensive game out of the two because they also had to make the engine for that one, while for legends they reused a lot of assets and engine.

        Anonymous

At least Origins was profitable, and didn't have crazy expectations to begin with. It was a smaller effort by Ancel whereas Legends clearly had much more backing judging by the production quality. Also, I think most assets for Legends were new, since the art is noticeably more detailed

If the whole game was as interesting as the intro was then people would have sold the game itself from good word of mouth. The game falls of a cliff after the intro and nothing exciting happens for the rest of the game add that the sparks felt like some shitty elemental gimmick you would see in a licensed tv show video game. The game just gets boring, you fight shit over and over again with little variety. Lots of great ideas, but horrible execution as expected from non jap developers.

I've seen this post before and still struggle to see how the prologue is different from the rest of the game apart from the battlefield being on a flying thing

        Anonymous

i don't agree with the overall point of that anon, but what he's trying to say is that the game's plot starts off promising in the intro, with many opportunities for the main characters to interact and talk with each other. Luigi and Peach even get text boxes in this segment. But after the intro, shortly after reaching the first world, the story crawls to an halt, and from this point on Beep-o and JEANIE become the mouth of the team. The Rabbids will say something every now and then, but the two robots will take any single opportunity to ask questions to NPCs or interact with the world they're exploring instead of letting Mario and friends do it. The story will ramp up again every now and then, but only when you meet a new playable character or a Spark Hunter, then back to the mute heroes.

            >I agree with everything you said though, it's one of my biggest problems with the game
They shouldn't have given BEEP-O full voice acting, and most certainly they shouldn't have given him so much screentime compared to the other characters. It made sense in Kingdom Battle, but not now

              Anonymous

Agreed x2, beepo being the dominant talker was a big mistake, the party members having their own comments on the warden backstory pictures alone would improve a lot

                Anonymous

exactly. Each Warden's backstory could have even resonated differently for each character.
Rabbid Mario would've absolutely emphatize with Augie's feel of mediocrity, Rabbid Peach definetly knew who Bea was terminally online as she is, and Edge could have been a little jelaous of the bond between Captain Orion and Rabbid Rosalina

        Anonymous

The anon who talked for me had the right idea, but im also taking about event wise, the game is boring. The only time the game does something interesting like this is in the elevator phase of roots of corruption and wiggler. The game and games in general should give you exciting events. Another Mario RPG on switch, the paper one gives you constant new events that are exciting. Why not use all of that Rabbid lore shit and just make those actual characters you can use to craft events for the group instead of the game being filled with shitty boss fights like those eyeball things and fighting cliffs.

now that you mention it, i don't believe for a second they did not have any idea for a mission on top of your spaceship where you have to defend it from the Darkmess Manta Ray while you're travelling to a new world. It's true that the other Spark Hunters also disappear very abruplty from the plot, but the Manta is the worst one in this regard. They had to be planning something more with it.

          Anonymous

True, even if gameplay-wise I didn't find it that less interesting as the last game there should be cool big moments there
The wiggler mission was basically the eyeball missions but they move but it's a start I suppose
I could imagine something like daphne's boss fight involving her plant powers going haywire and them becoming hazards and/or things you have to cross through, and if Bea is a singer then well she should sing something at some point
huh the manta could've been the terra flora boss thinking about it

now that you mention it, i don't believe for a second they did not have any idea for a mission on top of your spaceship where you have to defend it from the Darkmess Manta Ray while you're travelling to a new world. It's true that the other Spark Hunters also disappear very abruplty from the plot, but the Manta is the worst one in this regard. They had to be planning something more with it.

It very much feels like there are things they had to cut one way or another, ending being the most obvious thing, not even any 'after the game' images made in the style of the warden backstory pictures

    >Mario + Rabbids 1 was released in 29 August 2017

    >wait to release a sequel 5 years later in 2022

This game failed due to that simple reason alone. Its a game with kids as a primary target demographic. Kids have a incredibly narrow window before they age out of their demographic and start actively disliking "kiddie" things.

That means for the vast majority of its target audience it can't rely on any of the goodwill from the first game and basically has to market itself like a new ip with the baggage of a sequel (lots of people are wary about picking up a game if they haven't played the first.)

They needed to release this by 2020 at the latest.

I appreciate that adults like kiddy things like Mario, but generally they are overserviced as a demographic and they prefer cute things from their childhood (Animal Crossing, Pokemon), which Rabbids, equal billing to Mario, are generally not part of.
