music in western games is elevator music. there's really no attention given to it by either the developer or the player. it's not part of the overall experience, it's just ambient *sound* so procgen'ing your white noise works out perfectly.
japanese games actually hire composers and pay attention to music as being a component of the gameplay, so they'll keep hiring real humans.

He's right though. Most music in most video games is exactly that. More the rule than the exception. That's why people are so happy when there's something decent. But it also allows us to appreciate it as we only recognize things once we lose them.

The "epic" shit is ambient trash too. Taking skyrim for example it doesn't matter if it's a calm track or a combat ine it's still all just forgettable epic movie trailer pseudoclassical with no distinct qualities or memorable motifs and can be used in just about any other game without you even noticing. I can recall the central riff of every track in the original Deus Ex. With human revolution I can't remember a single fricking thing.

AI music is still way too rough to be actually listenable to. Manipulating sound files and making it sound good is a completely different ball-game to just generating text or images which are based just recognizing features in a flat, unmoving image. I'm guessing what the fortnite stuff means is just that they have a library of melodies/rhythms/chord progressions etc. which the AI can mix around and procedural generate from, not that it actually makes any original music.
There is AI music on youtube right now if you want to check it out, it's kinda fascinating but it sounds like what you'd expect a robot fricking around with sounds and rhythms rather than actual music, while also having completely shit mix.

Go listen to it right now anon, I don't think you realize how digitized sound works if you think it's that easy.
I'm sure they will get something decent going the next decade or something but right now it's way too raw.

The music is just as original as any text or image made by an "ai."

Of course but you get what I mean. Constructing digitized sound is not remotely comparable to text gen or an image gen.

            Anonymous

It absolutely is not. Do you have any experience with mixing sound?

Yes, you are correct. It's cool, and maybe will help people learn, but it's very hard to replace a full orchestra and the types of performances you can get.
Same thing as the people who arrange digitally...It's always lacking.

The main problem so far is how the frick do you teach an "ai" what sounds good in a mix and what is good "tone" for a specific sound. You can't just throw millions of tracks of music on it and brute force it like you can with images and text, it will just end up sounding like a cacophony of sounds with completely schizophrenic mix.
And that's not even mentioning song structure or harmonics and all it's conditional variances.

It's simple. You train another neural network to judge if it sounds good or trash. Use good sounds as positive example and random noise as negative and it will learn to distinguish good songs from trash.

Anon you don't seem to get the problem here, music doesn't have "good/bad" sounds. It's all about the mix and context of the sounds, which means it's always conditional and relative and that's absolute poison for machine learning which necessitates "pure" samples to learn correct behavior.
A clean electric guitar sound will sound great in a mellow jazz song but will sound like absolute shit in metal or pop song. And that's just taking an extremely easy example only relating to tone, there's a lot more complex issues at play.
There is no feasible way to teach the machine what constitutes good sound in the correct context in the correct mix in the correct genre and so on. It's completely relative and machine learning does not deal well with relative conditions.

These news are like a year old and Quartz already entered Fortnite in beta form two years ago, it's old. It's designed to generate generic lo-fi beats so that streamers can have some form of muzak on without being copyright strike, it's not meant to replace composers.

Machine learning (it's not AI) can be used to generate ambient music that sounds pretty alright but it absolutely struggles to do anything else. I could see it probably being good at doing like trap beats in the future or something since you can make one of those in 20 minutes with little effort.

        >music is created by the Quartz subsystem

        >[Quartz] is designed to generate generic lo-fi beats so that streamers can have some form of muzak

Quartz is a clock subsystem that does nothing except help track and schedule time globally in Unreal Engine. It calculates latency and is able to play audio accurately down to the sample. With it you can do things like quantize events to beats or vice versa, ensure synchronicity between tracks and other things that really simplifies the workflow for audio and music.
It does not generate its own music. Unreal Engine's Metasounds can be used with Quartz to make procedural soundtracks, but this is not AI, and works based on the same principles as a classic synthesizer.

It takes a very real person with a very real understanding of digital signal manipulation to do all of this and AI is not stealing anybodys job yet.
If you want to know more, here's a video from the lead engineer behind it:

Fortnite is the definition of goyslop gaming.
It’s gaming in the same way the MCU are movies or McDonald’s is food.
It’s something that’s a game purely by a technically definition but aspires to be nothing but a time waster with no emotional, artistic or spiritual goals. Even the most juvenile games of the SNES or PS2 era had some emotional core.
Everything in Fortnite is about being Good Enough to keep peoples attention. Sometimes that threshold is high, other times it’s low. But it’s never interested in being anything other than a Good Enough game to keep people playing and spending.
The procedurally generated music means that they just need Good Enough sound arrangements so players don’t notice it since silence is too little sound.
Fortnite is like white noise when you want to sleep. Except it’s basically white noise designed to keep you awake with the least amount of mental bandwidth usage possible

Frick off moron. The only people who should be afraid of AI doing this are shitty third rate artists that are probably already struggling to make a living anyway. Professionals working in the industry are far beyond what AI are capable of and have nothing to fear, while amateurs like myself who are truly passionate about it don't give a frick. I want to realize MY musical ideas that come from MY personal creativity, no AI no matter how good with anything short of complete mind reading technology will ever be able to make it exactly as I want it to because it will not be able to understand what I want to make on the level I do. And if that mind reading tech does ever become available then good luck to society, art will be the least of our problems then.

Also keep in mind that I'm saying the music is good not the games themselves, so if you're gonna be a b***h that genshin and halo infinite are there then you can frick off. Regardless though the composers of these have full time jobs making these things and they sure as hell are at no risk of being displaced by AI tech that is still extremely primitive and needs to be cleaned up and edited by someone with actual industry and technical knowledge anyway.

          A metalhead moron, no wonder.

I will give you velkhana. the rest can be easily done by AI. And its as generic as it can be. Literally nothing praiseworthy or even noteworthy.

There is one metal track among the five I posted moron, having electric guitars doesn't automatically make something metal

That Halo song is exactly the kind of uninspired shit AI was created to make.

This is ai generated, you can make it by yourself in 2 minutes. Its literally generic overworld videogame music. Might be even called good by morons like you.

Stuff with distinctive and strong melodies and motifs. I posted already an AI song thats literally not much better or worse than your halo shit.

Just google AIVA AI on youtube, half of that shit is 99% usable for most western games.

                >melody is the only component in songwriting
Thanks for showing me your knowledge of music theory is pedestrian and surface level.

I already explained that music is made of harmony, rhythm and melody. And most modern compositions lack in the melody aspect. I play like half a dozen instruments, Dont ever lecture me again.

Whatever is missing from AI compositions like these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emidxpkyk6o is also missing from shit like these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp9DDjBQx3Q

It can be done with AI. And the average modern western AAA ost is crap that can be easily replaced with ai. No whats or ifs. Any shit straight up from aiva ai could pass as one of those songs you posted and you would not even notice it. The human element is also lacking with humans too.

It's sad that you think playing six instruments is as unattainable as banging six different women a week

if you're splitting your time between so many instruments you either do music for a living or suck at all of them, which is it?
