I'm starting to wonder if these games can ever be fun to play for the first 30 hours. I'm really hoping the combat becomes more active soon after the 2nd chapter.

You get the full party right after ch 1 and you unlock all the master arts at around lvl 40 which isn’t too bad if you unlock all classes and do side quests

the first game had a decently fast start imo, at least compared to the others in the series

I've been wondering that myself. I need to give 2 a more proper try before I consider getting it though, I didn't get into it when I tried it, but pretty much everyone I've seen talk about Xenoblade pretty consistently said the combat sucks until it clicks and then you love it, so idk

XBC2 combat is fricking shit until you unlock auto attack cancels and art cancels, which requires SP grinding on each character to unlock. It doesn't get that deep either and the most interesting thing is shattering elemental orbs, otherwise it's the same topple shit as XBC.

Don't even get started on the broken nature of some of the mechanics or how overdeveloped/pointless some systems were like the Elemental Combo/Sealing system.

After slogging through it over the course of a year I finally finished xbc2.

I want to play 3 but I'm concerned that I'll be shooting myself in the foot by not having played 1 or torna.

Should I try and hit either or both of those first?

Nothing in Torna is mentioned or even referenced in 3. Torna is also very short by RPG standards, but the game is padded in length because of those stupid mandatory side quests.

XBC is long and drawn out. It's story is pretty shit and filled with clichés. It's basically starts off as a sunday morning cartoon and later on goes down the killing a guy that became a god route. At the end of the story you're just tired and thankful it's finally over. If you're looking to familiarize yourself just watch a story summary since XBC3 hardly uses anything besides its setting a few characters.

I'm maybe about halfway through. Played for 40 hours but I've been doing fricking everything and dicking around.
    >Game starts REALLY slow worse than any other Xenoblade game. Expect it to be very linear early on
    >Mid way through Chapter 3, game opens up, giving a lot of quest, Colonies to visit, ect. Easy to get lost in doing random shit, more so than XC1 or 2.
    >Areas are pretty good. Has more of an X feel.
    >Combat feels like a better version of 1. Can still cancel Fusion Arts and regular arts after a story event
    >Classes give you a ton of variety and a lot of experimentation without 2's gacha
    >Story has some real kino moments. Less light hearted than 2.
    >Villains look dumb as frick and aren't as memorable

I like it the more I play it, but again, I think I'm only midway through. If you get it, just expect the first part of it is a slog. I'd recommend doing the early quest in Colony 9 as you get them, and once the characters meet up, book it until you get Valdi. Still, I'd recommend it.

i actually like the 1st part leading to ch2 finale a lot, but only if you roleplay a strict soldier and never deviate from your path (until you realize you can aka ch3). ch1 and 2 finale were so raw its great
id recommend getting the heroes by the order they appear in the class list too, except Zeon. Save Zeon for after Teach and Valdi cus B is a b***h

Xenoblade Chronicles 2, compared to 3, has (a) better:
    -Story
    -Cast of characters
    -Music
    -Villians
    -MC
    -Waifus

I found Noah to be a boring protagonist and N is just Anakin Skywalker. Metsu/Malos is how a real villain is done.

He's established as a pacifist and a reluctant fighter, but who isn't afraid to stand up for what he believes in and make the tough calls. What do you mean by no character? He's just way more grounded compared to >muh Salvager's Code Rex and teen Shulk.

What I mean is he's boring.

          Anonymous

I think Noah has always been more introspective as a whole and he is much quieter as a result. As a result people tend to think he is boring, especially since his partners are Lanz and Eunie. But he carries himself with a quiet confidence that is more nuanced, and only in chapter 5 when that confidence is broken do really see the more desperate and hopeless side.

Rex sort of has a similar moment in Chapter 7, but it's relatively pretty brief. He gets his ass handed to him and basically quits, but it doesn't take long for him to snap out of it.

I think it has better character moments.
I think it’s conceptually ‘deeper’ but I don’t like that makes it better, just different. I don’t want XB2 part 2.
2 does a lot of things really well but for the things it doesn’t it really salts the earth of ‘how good it was’ when I look back at it.
I don’t want to fumble around with blades to set up field skills.
I don’t want to deal with gacha. I don’t want to lose a fight with Malos and Jin 3 times in a row.
I don’t want to shove cake and boardgames down Praxis’ throat for an hour to increase her affinity.

The most interesting thing to me about Xeno games is the world and how our heroes live in it and live with eachother.
          3 did that very well.
Also in a personal level I was annoyed at how inconsistent 2ms tone was. Sometimes it’d go for very serious and other times they do the anime antics and flare eyes and then never do it again.
2 is a great game fir different reasons than three and is an absolute mess for other reasons.

Many 2 fans literally only like and defend it because of the softcore porn in it

I think this infighting is moronic and pointing fingers doesn’t help.
The problem is thinking that 3 isn’t just like 2 when ewch game should be weighed on its own merits.
When 2 came out the only thing I saw people b***h about was how wacky it was comapred to 1 and the gacha system but was otherwise loved.
The difference now is how this board has devolved and how thinking on it has changed to “if you love pancakes then that means you hate waffles!” Or more so than usual.
It’s stupid and no sensical and serves only for arguing.

Infighting about games in a series of nothing but bangers is moronic.

The huge thing that 2 has over 3 is the combat, its just not as fun or as fast. In 3 it feels like you're fricking around until chain attack lights up, the its whatever, you can stumble your way through 5 combo chain and you automatically win

        Anonymous

.... in contrast to pressing as many A as possible then chain attack at 60%, if you want to use reductionism that hard? 2's biggest problem was how powerful chain attacks were with how easy you can set up orbs randomly by mid-late game. Hell running Mythra Telos alone is enough to launch lock and set up 3 orbs all by themselves in record time.

          Anonymous

Yes, its far more interesting stringing element orbs and constantly switching blades and arts, than waiting for shitty fusion arts to get off cooldown in 3. Chain combos were better too, since they're not as braindead in 3

            Anonymous

Not to mention how Orbs actually plays against you if you set up too much of them, as the enemy gains the orbs elemental resistance, and will frick you up if you're too greedy as it enters fury.

            Anonymous

            >chain combo in 2
            >not braindead
anon please, bringing 2 of the same element and just rolling shits off from there doesnt require any brain. And people saying 3 took longer than 2 when 2's after-each-turn cutscene is just as long. The only saving grace was the QTEs
also if you rotate your arts properly you pretty much doesnt have any downtimes, fusion or not, in 3. and you are treating as if all blades arent fundamentally the same in 2
tldr: shitting on other game's system by being reductionist wont work. 2 has a nice system going on but its marred by them being absolutely pointless, and worked only as fuel for spamming that A button. If anything Torna got a better, upgraded system (but still has the fundamental shortcoming of all blades game, that chain attacks are OP as frick still)

              Anonymous

Chain attack isnt braindead in 2 because it takes some planning before using it. You cant slap 9 fire elements and win. In 3 as long as you have 2 or 3 healers and 1 tank you're fine with using whatever you want and you'll win
              > if you rotate your arts properly you pretty much doesnt have any downtimes, fusion or not, in 3. and you are treating as if all blades arent fundamentally the same in 2
now this is a straight up lie. Every blade had a different use and had different skills depending who used it. You had to plan out which type is being used by who if you wanted fusion arts to go anywhere. As far as cooldowns go, just lol dude

              >Torna got a better, upgraded system
No. Doing the same Lora > Jin/Hugo > Addam > Mythra and pressing A freely because there's no restrictions for routes is even more braindead if you think 2 is bad. You even get orbs for free because everyone has Orb Master making CA even more broken. It added "Focus on Driver/Blade Combo" options but it's pointless when those are piss easy to do in Torna and the customization is almost non-existent

                Anonymous

i was talking about general gameplay, and still got very annoyed at chain attack in Torna being even more braindead, true, plus like half the UE encounter literally mandate you to CA at 50% to clear unless you want to suffer the enrage mechanic

Chain attack isnt braindead in 2 because it takes some planning before using it. You cant slap 9 fire elements and win. In 3 as long as you have 2 or 3 healers and 1 tank you're fine with using whatever you want and you'll win

play incursor, set up proper side palette and then we speak
                >reversal edge + quickdraw. 1st art refills in 3 ticks and quickdraw is a 17s cd
                >side winder (6) paired with anything ~25s cd, like ground beat
                >glitter stream + cross impact
                >ofc positional pro skill so you can actually use 3 positional arts
open with reversal edge, dash atack cancel into glitter stream and can just cancel into side winder, cancel right into reversal edge again. attack twice, dash to front and fusion reversal edge, to side and fusion glitter stream + cross impact (prep up power charge). by now infinity blade is up. Enjoy your frick huge slash
you just have to plan your shits and pair cds properly. even kevesi healers are fricking fun to play. Granted the only fun to play tank is lone exile but thats the general problem with tanks in this series aside from based Dunban

                >i was talking about general gameplay
And that general gameplay is a simplified version of 2 since they threw away many mechanics which served to balance it. The moment they decided that Driver and Blade were going to be the exact same in combat they should have thrown away the focus on Driver/Blade/Fusion Combo and the Elemental system straight into the garbage and do something like 3 as those mechanics were clearly designed with 2's gameplay in mind

          Anonymous

Honestly the CA in 3 are straight up a different gameplay mode and I'd honestly prefer 2 or even 1 if it keeps 3's idea of 1/3 of the bar being one round

Rex I like because he has a pretty strong yet subtle character arc and shows a very realistic aspect of life, that there are simply things about the world you cannot change immediately but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try and better it.

Noah’s arc is more so about a dude trying to achieve his goals in his own terms but comes at the cost of losing everything. He realizes that he is holding himself back and if he does he will not achieve anything in the end. That’s the whole deal with his autism of Lucky Seven

Malos is interesting because his natural instinct is to destroy everything, but it's shown that it bothers him quite a bit that he doesn't really understand where this comes from. There is a reason why the only question he asks the Architect is if the instinct is a part of him or a part of Amalthus. He even seems to be satisfied with the Architects answer that it's really both, since his instinct is there from Amalthus, but it was his own actions and will that hardened it into who he is.

Music in 3 was the weakest out of all three games. Nothing as memorable as 1 or 2.

Not nothing but the biggest issue is the area themes just aren't there the way they are for XB2 or XB1.
I can hum all of 2's and most of 1's zone themes. I can do that now, at least a year out from a playthrough of either, while I can barely remember 3's area themes WHILE I'm playing.
I do quite like the battle themes of 3, I think they stand up well alongside 2's and above 1's. But the area themes are what you hear 99% of the time so those should be better
Also, the chain attack music should NOT be kicking in during boss battles with dramatic music

          >Also, the chain attack music should NOT be kicking in during boss battles with dramatic music
tbf xeno 1 also fricked this up really hard by playing that visions of the future song after the prediction gets broken, which happens 99% of the fricking time

          >Also, the chain attack music should NOT be kicking in during boss battles with dramatic music
I'm surprised by how so many people are bothered by this, while no one complaint about it in 1 from what I've seen. The chain attack music in 3 at least still frickin slaps compared to 1's absolutely dogshit override tracks THAT NEVER GOES AWAY FOR THE WHOLE DURATION OF THE FIGHT.

            Anonymous

People have always complained about musical interruptions, be it vision reacts or the skell flying theme or whatever
I agree that the xc3 chain attack theme is at least good on its own, i fricking hated wir gaygin for shitting up everything and taking away all the intensity but people excuse it for some reason

i like 3's area themes more actually, its more in line with 1's themes, soft walk-around-a-dying-world kinda feel, while doesnt get grating on the ears like FRICKING GORMOTT THEME STOP PLEASE. the horrible remix in Torna didnt help either. but then the lack of experiment also robbed us of the banger that is Roaming the wastes

What sticks out like a sore thumb is the fricking menu music. Who the FRICK thought that would be a good idea? The area music is not bad, though it's a step back compared to XC2 (and not having any towns worth a shit really didn't help XC3. Where is my Fonsa Myma Night? Where are Theosoir's themes? Where is my Alba Cavanich Night? let's not even get into Auresco territory).
But the fricking menu music breaking everything, man. They better not do that shit ever again in the next iterations.

3's story is on the same level for me, at least up to chapter 5.
Cast of characters is about equal for me.
Music and Villains are WAY in favor of 2 though. Moebius is cool, Torna is fantastic.
MC is about equal for me too. Hard to compare given the different stories
Waifus is also about equal. 2 has more but each of 3's gets more screen time

I'm "only" halfway through Chapter 6 and the biggest gripe I have with the story are the Mebius. Out of the 25, like 20 are nothing but filler/cannon fodder. I really think it was a mistake having so many supposedly powerful villains.
Even the main ones get curbstomped after they beat you up a bit.
I liked the bad guys in 1 and 2 more.

I think having a league of 20+ villains makes sense in context. This is a council of beings who are keeping an entire world under their heel. It's more plausible to have a higher number of individuals overseeing the daily machinations of things.

      Anonymous

That is exactly the point, though. They are supposed to appear powerful but in the end they are weak and afraid. The last few of them you fight are barely above the regular fodder mobs you fight, they don't even get death cutscenes, the battle ends like a regular enemy and you just move on.

Need some tips for level up class

        Anonymous

        Repost from yesterday.
I've been killing the titans in Origin, here's how it works.
        >level down to around level 50 or so with all your characters, also change difficulty to easy
        >play as noah, equip him with the skill that lets you start battle with the talent art charged (from flash fencer) and give him unlimited sword as his talent
        >fast travel to defense tower #1 in origin
Here there's two elite giants you're going to kill to farm class xp. How to is different depending on whether Noah is an attacker or tank/healer
        >attacker: draw L7 and spam the B art over and over again, eventually Doom wil proc and the titan will instantly die
        >tank/healer: draw L7, instantly go into ouroboros level 0 with noah, then spam his arts/talent arts until the giant's dead. you should have more than enough time if the game's on easy
Then to quickly reset the enemies, target one of the remaining giants, press A to enter battle, then hold - to give up, which will respawn you at the same place but the enemies will be back and you keep your XP.
Once you get to level 60 or so you go to a rest spot to level down again.
Here's a webm of how it works when you're a healer, can't show the full fight because it's longer than 30 seconds.

Xenoblade 1 left art descriptions offscreen until you hovered over them, so you only had to have one visible at once. It also had a less obtrusive set of party HP gauges, no flowchart in the upper right, no control of party members except for a contextual prompt when you were close, and a less obtrusive enemy HP gauge as well.

after killing the second giant i just run through and jump off the ledge and die rather than going into the menu. respawns all the enemies. can do this anywhere you can have a nice day rather than teleporting out and back into zones too.

should also mention you should load up with break/topple/daze/burst arts and go farm 6 monastic necklaces first. doesn't take TOO long maybe 30 mins. it drops off otherworldly rodsin google where he is. im sure you could get away with 4 or 5 and shift it around off S rank classes but to me its easier to just make sure all 6 are wearing one at all times. remember to reequip when you change classes.

every time my food ran out i'd level the party down to 1 and noah to 60, he'd be high 60s by the time food ran out again. as far as i could tell the CP gains were still high even in high 60s and the higher you get the less likely you are to go down to attacks if you get bad doom rng.

also to make it more entertaining use the Fast recharge when non defender is targeted skill and also the item with the same effect on noah. if you have both it will recharge almost instantly and you can spam cancel the B fusion into itself. dont think it makes a huge difference but i found it funny even after a few hours

Definitely. Though as it stands, XC2 is a more satisfying package. I reserve my final judgement when the Expansion Pass releases, it may change my perception of things. Though fact is a DLC expansion shouldn't have that power in the first place, meaning there's a problem somewhere.

From a purely gameplay perspective how does this compare to 2, mainly just combat to be even more specific

If you're comparing final states with all mechanics unlocked the combat in 2 is more complex and more fun for me because of its complexity. The combat in 3 is simplified but also more polished (no role is useless, whereass healers were garbage in previous games), which could appeal to others.

      Anonymous

      its... different
Kevesi (xc1) classes are slower, but Agnian (xc2) classes are button mashing fes. proper team comp is more important here, healer is mandatory to survive some encounters, and tanks are more finnicky. Hard is actually hard (until mid-late game), and chain attack is somewhat slow but satisfying to plan things around
      tldr its fun

    >All villains are "had an aboo boo so now I want everyone dead, but not really I just don't know how else to vent my 500 year old sadness 🙁 " because no one can be really evil
    >Let's have 2 characters die at the start of the game but they magically come back, so when one really dies you expect them to revive, and by the time they realize he won't, we're already having funny anime "staring at breasts? kyaa" scenes
    > Let's try that again for the ending of the game where it makes no sense for Pyra or Mythra to just revive with their memories after the conduit, the source of energy, disappeared into another dimension, but have a whole scene to trick players anyway
    >Rex should have a self doubt scene to show he's not perfect but let's put it at the worst possible point in the story, after we show Pyra is willing to kill herself for him but he just goes "nah someone else take care of it, I'm out" without even wanting to help put together a rescue team or something

Ironicly its Amalthus that makes Malos a way better villain than Z could ever be. While both of them essentially ammount to concepts by the end, Malos the embodiment of humanities nature of self destruction, and Z Humanities fear and self doubt, Z has no redeeming character to play off of other than "theres some moebius in all of us". Its like if Nyx in persona 3 had no Nyx avatar to make anyone give a shit about it. N could've been the Amalthus to Z's Malos, but Z was a concept well before we even see early Noah.

Battle system is mostly fun but your party shifting into robot form never seems to help the tide of battle, especially if it’s your tank or healer switching over. It’s just a good way to end up dead. Love most of the classes but some of them seem borderline useless like the archer chick or the sword and shield paladin. Story is all over the fricking place and is passable at the best of times. Characters change their deeply held beliefs on a whim after talking to you for like 30 seconds, it gives you whiplash. Performance on the switch is okay though the game goes all “fuzzy” when a lot is happening and it looks weird. World exploration is top notch.

      >t. hasn't finished the game
The development and characterisation in this game is a lot more subtle, and sometimes you have to talk to the NPCs in between side quests to see how their views are slowly changing.

        Anonymous

Archer chick goes from “I want to die” to “maybe I want to live” in the span of a 30 second battle. It’s bad writing.

The heroes tend to be all over the place with writing. Juniper kind of sucks in most ways, but then you have heroes like Ashera and Triton who are genuinely awesome and it feels baffling that the same person who wrote those wrote shit like Valdi and Juniper.

Yes the villains in 3 suck in terms of depth.
But they're meant to all be petty buttholes who want to watch the world burn because if they can't be happy, no one else can either. This includes Z; who's clearly symbolic for humanity's depression. He sits around in his kinoplex, keeping himself entertained with stuff that ultimately has no real meaning, ignores the fact that his world is literally ending, leaves important tasks to others, barely interacts with anyone outside of trying to make them miserable too, but at the same time he's just as afraid of the future/death as the average person, and when someone questions him on his actions he replies as if it's just for "amusement" but when pressed further he breaks down claiming he hates everything.
All of them are like that; literally none of them want to exist, but all of them are too scared to actually die or kill themselves. The ones our party actually manage to break through with words, all commit a form of suicide; because they realized they messed up and finally got the courage to "change", even if it's not ideal.
Moebius, thematically are a fine villain group. The only issue is that there are 26 of them

I'm still wondering why they didn't say Z was some emotion of Klaus's that attached itself to all the core crystals in origin

I agree but I think the transition from them seeming like big bads at the start of the game to actually just being kind of losers by the end could have been done better.
There's this dissonance the moment you have to do Valdi's quest and it kind of just continues on with each side quest but it isn't really explained until much later on.

I think Moebius and the consuls are canonically absurdly powerful, it's just that Oroborous is canonicallly more so. Keep in mind that while consuls become fodder near the end of the game, even the weakest of consuls is strong enough to wipe out Gold colonies essentially by themselves, as shown with D destroying prior Eunie's colony by himself and L wiping out the unnamed one with X supervising. Keep in mind that in a 1v1, every Moebius still absolutely wrecks all the Oroborous except for possibly Noah.

They are only powerful inside the simulation.

I don't get it, unless you mean the simulation as Aionios as a whole, which is kind of like saying "well they are only powerful because the rules of the universe say so".

I think Valdi's was just a bad main hero mission to include at the very start. The way the consul ends is comical and , while it is a twist that he appears again, at that point in the game it muddies up how you view the consuls from then on in my opinion

The original goal is to get it to reboot everything. But people suck and instead, their will spawns Z. Literally everyone's souls are stored within core crystals at the heart of Origin.
It's pretty clear that Z is the equivalent of Malos; except instead of resonating with Amalthus, he resonated with the entirety of humanity stored in Origin.

He's essentially depressed and doing the divine form of shitposting to make other people miserable and entertain himself.
I hated him at first too, but now that I got a clear grasp of what they were attempting with Moebius, I probably would put him above Zanza. He's a villain who you have to engage with more thematically, rather than logically. Honestly, probably one of my favorite depictions of humanity's collective because it's blunt and suprisingly accurate. No sugarcoating done with a sappy backstory, just played straight.

I know you are exaggerating but for a game that is probably the more direct sequel to both games, it will reference aspects of them and explain how things came to be in the now. Plus it doesn't help that dev comments don't seem to align with the Base Game's Content, we're probably going to have a lot of those deeper cuts in the DLC story.

yep! loving it. Not sure why XB3 got so much hate. It is the best story, cast, gameplay, and maybe music of each xenogame. It really is being hated on by people who haven't played a minute of it. It's such a concentrated effort, we "need to find out who the real enemy is" lol

Just a warning anon post-chapter 6 is easily the most controversial portion of the story because it becomes more about it's themes rather than the characters. And somehow the themes still go over peoples heads.

Story has some nice characters moments, but some really frustrating plot "don't think about it" moments (Riku and the sword, Ouroboros, black fog, half assed big tech ball explanation, ... ). We shall see if DLC conclude some loose threads.
Music has some pretty good themes, but I find some field themes a bit weak.
Combat is pretty good, but I still prefer xb2 somehow.
Regions are a mishmash of previous games with some cool callbacks, but riding on nostalgia more than anything. I found the game lacking on memorables places like Satorl Marsh or Uraya. Agnus Castle was a great disapointement in particular, you see it floating from a lot of places, and when you get to it it's a single room, not an Auresco like mini town.

    Still a pretty good game.

id say go in either in 1 (plus future connected) > 2 > Torna > 3 or 2 > 1 > Torna > future connected > 3 are both valid order. The former for a "progression" in term of gameplay and general game feel, or the latter to prevent you from burning out of a game system too much

Level it up solely for completion and Juniper's quests, because it's dogshit and a contender for worst class in the game

Can't a class just be shit? That seems to be what they were going for when they made Stalker

        It's a bad class.

it IS a shitty class. Just get the field art on a tank and maybe debuff res down skill and promptly toss the class into the trash

          Machine Assasin later on.
It's a class based on debuffs, the issue being that enemies resist debbufs A LOT. It has an art that can lower enemy debuff resistance, but that one can also be resisted.
          It's a mess.

I can't believe we got desert themes that were just "okay" in 3. Especially after X's and 2's. Desert themes are without exception the best video game tracks, and here it felt like a letdown. Thank god there's at least 15 seconds of Dannagh's Desert theme that's good. After like 3 minutes.

I think it's funny that people always defend the XC3 OST for being "subdued" to fit the theme of the game more, but it's not like XC2 didn't have loads of subdued songs in form of the night themes that each and every one completely mogs everything in 3 on their own. Some examples:

Like, it's not like I hate XC3's OST, in fact it's grown on me quite a bit, and I get that it's literally impossible to follow up the act that was XC2's OST, but let's not trick ourselves into believeing XC3's soundtrack has got shit on 2's.

2's area themes are timeless, but I think 3's battle themes come out on top

Irrelevant. You can't take one quest and say it's the whole game

              it really isn't cherrypicking

It's like if I brought up the godawful Nopon quest chain in Satorl Marsh which requires to do a back and forth between what you were supposed to do and the quest giver which is annoying since the fast travel point isn't close enough to him and I said it was the whole game, which is the very definition of cherrypicking

XC3 is just a bit more refined in hiding its monotony with unique dialogue. The most common trope is that you run into a named NPC that you've maybe talked with during the main plot before or during some hero quest, they have a problem and then the party says "Oh we'll help you out to kill those 10 bunnits that are bothering you at night don't worry". Sometimes you'll have someone, most likely Eunie go "oh I guess it's that time again" or "I can guess who's gonna go and solve this problem".

The only thing that really improved is the dialogue, or rather the fact that all the party members get to say something meaningful rather than the npc talking to himself and the party saying "Yeah" in 2 or an actual relevant line if you have that one specific party member in 1 in the active party. The rest is the same garbage with somehow even more back and forth, thank god for that option to go to the map near the quest objective allowing you to select the closest fast travel point or it would be unbearable

Explain the process that made you like him

        Anonymous

I honestly was kind of baffled by the hate he got. I never thought he was incredible or anything, but I always liked him as a villain.

I feel like everyone needs the villain to have some horrible tragic past or great reasons for being who they are, but Z is just a bastard who is so far beyond humanity and so done with existence that literally nothing really bothers him, either good or bad. He is more of a critique on humanity than anything, and I think a pretty biting one at that.

This anon got it right. Moebius/Z are just apathetic/depressed buttholes (remember even Z does have some individuality, he's not entirely just meant to be a concept) that really captures how shit people can really be.
He sits in his theater watching something that ultimately doesn't actually matter (since the entire war is pointless outside of harvesting life).
He lets all of his avatars do his work for him, and never fights for his ideals.
He's essentially a godlike being that doesn't do anything to help the world (remember annihilation events are destroying Aionios slowly). And he ignores the existence of annihilation events anyways.
He copes by saying everything is going as "planned" for his amusement.
When he does take an interest in others (N and the other consuls) his main goal is to make them just as miserable as he is.
When his thoughts are challenged; he breaks down (I HATE IT) and copes because he cannot imagine a future where things are better.
Basically Z, and the Moebius in their entirety are a critique on how apathy can cause the destruction of the world. Which is pretty accurate nowadays irl. Instead of focusing on fixing/improving the future; they're all content with suffering and maintaining status quo because other's misery makes them feel like they're not miserable.
Basically in a ham-fisted irl metaphor what I'm saying is Moebius are elites, soldiers are just regular people, annihilation events are a metaphor for global warming.

Sure but Metal Face, and D for that matter, have a pretty solid reason for doing what they do- they just like to kill people, the more brutal the better.

Z's reason for doing anything is literally "It amuses me". I think they problem is that people were thinking that people think that Z has to be a Zanza like bastard who is so over the top, rather than just being more muted and done with life.

          >Critique on humanity
He literally is humanity my guy. He's not even a villain really... He is just doing what the people stored in Origin want him to do.
You could rewrite this story with Moebius as the good guys quite easily.

Sort of. I'm pretty sure that humanity doesn't want 10 year life spans, of which they are constantly in a never ending war. But you are right that Z and all of Moebius is fundamentally built from humanity's collective fear of the future, particularly when the future looked as bleak as theirs may have.

There is tons of logical thinking to be done in this game. It's the logical thinking that goes beyond the scope of anything the game provides you that delves into the realm of headcanon. You aren't in a position to be deducing anything when you are just using the vague information the game provides and turning into your own translation for some head fantasy fanfiction you are writing.

            [...]

            This is more headcanon.

I do like XB2's OST more than 3 but 3 does a really good job of incorporating the music into the scenes to give it a more higher production/cinematic feeling.
XB2 tracks get the emotion of the scene across pretty well usually but it's just background music generally.
Most people also don't even pay attention to this sort of shit and it doesn't matter anyway.

Only to realize you don't hear much because you kill everything in 10 seconds, and if you ever have a fight that lasts more, it's because there's an Elite monster in it, or a quest/story related battle that will either have yet an Elite in it, or another battle theme playing.

hard isnt even that hard tho, it mostly punishes diving into mobs without any care and expect to just AoE them all away. Granted even that part got done in by UNBOUND EDGE DRAGON TAIL UNBOUND EDGE DRAGON TAIL midway into the game
normal fights just end too easy too fast to even see boss's mechanics, and makes for boring fights

            Anonymous

Huh? The hard part about hard mode is the bosses, because your damage and healing is so low and the bosses actually do damage to your party. Try tanking with a Zephyr on hard and they'll most likely get their shit kicked in before you kit them out in good accessories and gems. You might even need to run with a War Medic or Lifesage just to fill out the healing needs.

              Anonymous

i meant "normal mode" fights get boring fast. And yea boss fights are tougher in hard too, but with some good planning (and/or war medic with that accessory that 100% refresh your cd upon reviving) its not that tough. Maybe a "let non healer revive" item on a tank as a back up

            Anonymous

hard is definitely hard what the frick are you talking about?

It definitely gets easier near the end and postgame, but in the early game when your class and options are limited, some of the bosses are really hard. I remember the Colony 9 Consul and the Colony 30 Consul absolutely pushing my shit in for the longest time, and the one special Consul with Garvel I literally could not beat after half a dozen attempts (although I was a level below her and was locked into the fight).

The post game is definitely easier than the rest, but hard is literally only easy if you are consistently abusing bonus EXP at camps.

          Anonymous

I don't see the issue with playing normal, but the game really isn't that difficult to have to come up with any sort of strategy unless you are doing hard mode. I remember when you fight DJ at Agnes Castle on hard, I was a level higher than him, and his Doom Rain was a near party wipe every time he used it because even if you survive the initial hit, the blaze damage does so much extra damage that even healing immediately may not save you. I was forced to figure out that I could completely circumvent this by having a Stratageos use his debuff guard the second the move started to come out, and after that I was able to manage the fight with not much issue. This was the fight that taught me to really pay attention to the attacks that the enemy is doing, as it can make all the difference between one of your party getting killed and 4 of them getting killed.

The point is that "strats" for Normal may be inefficient at best or actively harmful at worst because you figuring out a simpler problem with a simpler solution that may not carry forward to other fights as easily.

It does feel baffling honestly. It feels like the problem is that Noah and Mio's story is so front and center and central to everything that they don't have a way of incorporating a side story that isn't just literally pulling pieces from the past. At least they were relevant characters in their side stories, unlike Sena in hers.

I didn't really care. If they were side quests instead of forced main quest I would have done them both at around the same time in the game anyway As I imagine most people would have since the game clearly wants you to do those quests at around that point of the game.
To me at it was was the game reminding you and telling you to do the main cast side quests for all the different perks they provide.

I think Xenoblade 3 proves that JRPGs shouldn't have vague/mysterious writing.
Everything should be written simple and easy to understand so people do not get filtered and everyone can appreciate the story.
There is nothing wrong with a tropey story where the main cast lives happily ever after, leaving no room for disappointment.

      >where the main cast lives happily ever after, leaving no room for disappointment
the whole point of the story is how the future is uncertain and that's why moving forward instead of just staying on your safezone is so hard, showing exactly what happened to everyone would shit all over it
just wait for the DLC to show every single character in the new world(s) living happily ever after, which is the reward for all of their struggles and sacrifice during their existence in Aionios

I haven't killed ZOD yet but I'm right there and will do it after work.
So far I feel like the story and tone was 9/10 for the first half of the game and then kind of fizzled out.
I didn't enjoy XC2's tone and story all that much for much of the game, but the primary mystery of Elysium and then the fricking AMAZING part of the game when you get to the tree and go up it and the reveals are MUCH MUCH better than this end section of 3.
Unless the ending vastly changes my perception of the game, I am right there with you on that rating.

yeah, it's basically the reverse of what happens with XC2
XC3 is good to great for 80% of the game, but loses steam in chapter 6 and 7

This game has spawned more headcanon schizo's that didn't understand the game in the slightest. 2 had a fair share of them as well but they don't hold a candle to the amount that 3 has spawned. Normies have issues with thematic story telling which is probably why 3 will be regarded in the same way older Xeno games are and not the ones with more mass appeal like 1/2.

Older Xeno games aren't regarded at all.

No it is not at all. It’s far better than 2 and I’d say a little better than 1

          >It’s far better than 2
The ONLY reason I'd rank 3 above 2 is because of the dogshit Blade system dragging 2 down.
It's certainly not better than 1.

The plot in 3 is easily the worst in the series.

I don't know if the general consensus is 7/10 and worst Xenoblade.

I think Chapter 5/6 being the peak and then it kind of fizzles out in the end is more consensus, but I think every Xeno game has at least one section that fricking sucks ass, and the one for 3 is just meh.

        >1 is everything in Mechonis after Machina Village to the fight with Egil cause its boring as shit and just a long annoying grind.
        >X is honestly the end of the game, since its just "you know all the questions we set up throughout the game to be answered in the end? We aren't going to answer any of them and add a few more. Frick you".
        >2 was like chapter 2/3 when it decided to be the most cringe anime ever written.

3 got off comparatively easily since its "worst" section was just sort of basic "save the world" shit with a few exceptions that weren't enough to totally make up for it. I think people are harsher than they should be since this is pretty much the only xeno game that doesn't have an 11th hour twist that completely recontextualizes the entire game like 1 and 2 had. I may have preferred a little bit more oomph, but its definitely not fricking awful.

          >people are harsher than they should be
Are they? I've literally not seen anyone complain outside of contrarians on Ganker that probably haven't even played the game.

So far 3 has the worst reviews on amazon jp.
It might go even lower considering some people have yet to finish chapter 6 and 7.

    >play through until it's time to wake up miss Queen of Agnus
    >feel like too much was emotionally resolved at once, hard to work up the motivation to continue
Like, wow, they made it hit hard, but what the frick, couldn't they have saved some gut punches for the end?

i should clarify by this I mean I'm finally being told "go wake her up now", so this is right after the massive string of twists and reveals associated with Mio's fake death.
