Unironically needed more cutscenes. Too many things left unexplained.

I was obsessed with that Regain tie-in commercial the Japanese version got with Snake forever when I was like 10. Just wish there was one more standard length stealth level like the Middle East or South America before Shadow Moses.

Amazing, like the rest of the series.

It needed more sections that let you fully utilize the core gameplay.
    >Act 1 and 2
You're able to utilize all of the mechanics during these. The game's marketing hyped up and promoted being able to sneak through active battlefields, which these acts let you do.
    >Act 3
It's an escort mission that's also a stalk the target mission that is also an avoid being seen by anyone mission. Even if you use the most optimal method of getting through this part by using one of the masks that makes everyone accept your presence without a fuss, you still have to waste time waiting for the person you're following to slowly make his way to the end of each area to progress.
And when you finish that, it's an on-rails chase sequence and a boss fight.
    >Act 4
It relies heavily on nostalgia, but in terms of the gameplay, since the act only throws the robotic enemies of the game at you, you don't get a chance to use CQC or a chunk of your arsenal and gadgets. The boss fight against Crying Wolf is the only time you see regular human enemies during this Act, since there's FROG soldiers roaming around the snowfield during it, and I can't help but think that it would have been better if they had also patrolled some of Shadow Moses beyond that one isolated fight.
    >Act 5
The game finally lets you have full access to all of your options for gameplay by throwing a large variety of enemies at you and several ways to try tackling the area you're initially thrown into...only for it to end the second you leave that area. Then it's just a scripted fight against some enemies, a boss fight, and then the final boss. There's no normal gameplay outside of that one starting room on the deck.
You'd think they would have let you explore more of the ship, considering how big it was, but no, it's mostly a boss rush when you're not in cutscenes.

My one major positive view towards Gekkos was that, being biological machines, they were vulnerable to tranquilizer ammunition on the legs. If you knew where to aim on their after dropping them, they were pretty minor threats at best.

Oh yeah, the robot enemies weren't that bad to deal with in the grand scheme of things. You could easily distract them by simply throwing empty ammo clips and sneaking past when they went to investigate. Act 4 wasn't that challenging to get through, it was just boring going through the rooms, since there were only so many ways you could interact with the Gekkos and Dwarf Gekkos.

        >Act 4
        >It relies heavily on nostalgia
        >Says some shit and doesn't mention the literal giant robot fight at the end

        >Says some shit and doesn't mention the literal giant robot fight at the end
I was mostly focusing on the normal gameplay, not boss fights.
I love the Rex vs. Ray fight, it's a great moment in the game and helps redeem Act 4 a little in my eyes. But that doesn't change the fact that actually playing through most of it is a slog. There's also the Vamp fight which I didn't bother to bring up either, which I thought was pretty disappointing on a gameplay and narrative level with how it was handled.

Agreed anon. MGS4 is the weakest in the mainline series. If they had cut some of the fat out of the cutscenes (25 minute intro, 1 hour+ ending) and made Act 3 and 5 into actual battlefields like the first two acts, it would have 10/10 from me.
      >Act 3
European city would have been a cool setting for a battlefield, in contrast to the ME and South America. As it was, just short and out of place.
      >Act 4
It too didn't stick to the premise but was still kino. The sniper boss battle was great. Would have made a good breather before going into the final act's hypothetical battlefield.
      >Act 5
Worse than act 3 really, the one and only main area sucked. Kind of cool to go in guns blazing I guess but when that was all it was followed by lackluster shoot-a-thon boss, real let down of a climax.

Incomprehensible gibberish with a terrible story contrived by awful ideas. This is basically what happens when you let kojimbo do whatever he wants. The only thing I really liked was the gameplay, aside from that the game was pretentious crap.

Alien 3 type of sequels, it has some good moments but it ruins everything established before it for no reason
