Its nice but I thought it had bad PS2 cores didn't it? Also I had to resort to some old forgotten Saturn emulator for a couple games cause the Saturn cores kept dropping the ball.
used to hate retroarch, but they made the UI much better and, with the steam version, it's configured properly out of the box and has steam cloud saves. pretty good
come now, why would you want any option at your fingertip in two clicks, when you could scroll through miles of irrelevant options to find the one setting you need
used to hate retroarch, but they made the UI much better and, with the steam version, it's configured properly out of the box and has steam cloud saves. pretty good
why should I deal with a garbage menu when standalones do everything I want without the garbage menu part?
1) The old PS3 interface isn't used by default anymore, it's the ozone UI which is much better.
2) There is a Qt desktop interface.
Pic related is both of them side by side.
Project 64 is timeless
Project 64 is far worse than Mupen64plus-Nx with Angrylion software renderer and ParaLLEl. This is the most accurate N64 emulation that exists.
I care about the devs when they kill the emulators that their work is based on.
Retroarch never killed any emulator, some just cry that they used their open-source GPL code.
Just use Libretro >desktop UI of standalones >core compatibility of Retroarch
Retroarch is an implementation of libretro. Not sure what you're talking about.
The advantage of this is supposed to be convenience but it's so fucking buggy it creates more problems than setting up multiple emulators. Those seem to usually just pick actually good filters and shaders instead of having a million shit ones even, so I'm not sure there's any advantage besides run ahead.
Yes, some games have inherit input lag even on real hardware. For example, Mortal Kombat 2 (SNES) has like 11 frames and Final Fight 2 around 6 frames. They are the sluggiest pieces of shit, but became very snappy if you remove the dead input frames.
Nah, it can you way beyond that. You need to know what you're doing or you can end up with missing frames instead of just dead input time. For the most part, most games have +1 or +2 frames of delay, but there are games +5 and more. It makes all the difference in those situations.
Literally use a front end of your choice and there are no disadvantages. Absolute brainlet thread. Learning to set it up takes a few minutes and works universally as well as game specific, you have full control.
Im convinced that those who are against retroarch are either turbo dumbasses that cant navigate through its menu or oldfags that just refuse to move on. I have neved had any issue with RA and Im actively use it on pc,vita and SeX. Only ps2 is better as stand alone emu and of course the newest ones; ps3/360/switch emus. The rest are better on RA especially with the CRT shaders. >Muh chudarch
Nobody who has some self respect cares about the dev trannies and their drama. I just want a comfy universal emulator to play my games
You know that you can change the whole fucking RA ui, right? Lots of people using the ps3 ui layout, because its more effective to use. As for me, I find the standard RA UI to be just fine.
first time I hear that instead of the kneejerk it's good you just too dumb to get how good it is
but the question still stands, why should I bother using it when the standalones work perfectly fine?
Not that anon but there are some situation in wich using retroarch is just convenient.
I have an Android chink handheld and I use Retroarch for it because it is easier than having 8 different emulators on it.
that's valid, but retroarch shills insist you use it on your desktop where it simply is way less convenient than standalones

why should I use it?

Sometimes it is more convenient.
For example you can save some specific settings per game and per emulator. You can't just do that with a standalone emulator.

>why should I use it?
It unifies many different emulators under one UI.
So instead of 20 completely different programs, you have 1 program with the same:
- UI
- Settings
- Shaders
- Keybinds
For example you can make a controller keybind to fast forward, now every emulator will fast forward with that keybind.
Try that with your standalone emulators and you will find that it probably does not support controller keybinds for fast forward, and you'll be going through several different interfaces configuring this for each of them.
This is merely one example, this applies to everything.

Instead of 20 different emulators with different folders to put BIOS files in, you now have 1 BIOS folder.
Instead of 20 different emulators with different save file folders, you now have 1 save folder you can easily back up.
Why do all these old simple consoles need individual programs? Why would you want this?
Why waste time programming a UI, controller input, etc. and all that shit not directly related to emulating the console, when you could just use Retroarch?
Some devs do feel this way, like the Genesis Plus GX developer.

>UI
I haven't seen an emulator with an UI bad enough I'd want to replace it except old retroarch and ppsspp, which apparently sucks on retroarch >Settings
emulators need their specific settings anyway >Shaders
don't give a single fuck about them outside PS2, which again sucks on retroarch >Keybinds
takes a one time investment of 1-10 minutes >Try that with your standalone emulators and you will find that it probably does not support controller keybinds for fast forward
every single emulator I use does

>bios, save folders
your only sensible arguments >Why do all these old simple consoles need individual programs? Why would you want this?
because they work perfectly without the need of another middleman file explorer >Why waste time programming a UI, controller input, etc. and all that shit not directly related to emulating the console, when you could just use Retroarch?
because you don't want to be dependent on another program and its developers
why waste your time maintaining a different version of your program and coordinating with another developer when you could just make your own on your own terms? >Some devs do feel this way, like the Genesis Plus GX developer.
which is very unfortunate
>specially with the CRT shaders
Did the irony ocur to you that you were slagging off "old people" not wanting to move on, while basically snowballing shaders to mimick CRTS for a nice close up shot for the camera? I'm 47 years old and old enough to be your dad. Let me illuminate you on something, Sir Zoomsalot. CRT was ass. If you want to be le edgy Technopunk you could at least mention the actual superior display: plasma. Worse still, CRT shaders do not actually mimic the pixel bleeding of old cathode rays. It's a fucking gimmick and it's almost comical that there are people out there who are such poseurs, they put a fucking overlay on top of their game. I wish you could grasp how stupid and clueless you sound.
Not a zoomer grandpa. Im a millenial that grew up with crt monitors and still owns a working one. While RA's shaders are not 100% accurate to the real deal, they come pretty close and save me the hussle to connect my snes on the TV.
Old games were made with these limitations in mind and some actually look a bit better than in raw pixel or with just a bilinear filter
I use launchbox to just have everything all in one place and no need for using the mouse and strictly just the controller
Launchbox with RetroArch for all the extra old games like snes/nes/Saturn etc and then individual emulators through LB. You can also configure LB to be however you want it to be
The only use I have found for it is for bSNES HD to play widescreen SMW. For some reason the standalone freezes and slows down in castle boss battles, but the RA core does not because it is an earlier beta. That will get ironed out of course, but hey, it's something I guess.
Don't care
Still using zsnes
Its nice but I thought it had bad PS2 cores didn't it? Also I had to resort to some old forgotten Saturn emulator for a couple games cause the Saturn cores kept dropping the ball.
It's bad because it's pcsx2 but they've been getting their shit together lately, who cares anyway
used to hate retroarch, but they made the UI much better and, with the steam version, it's configured properly out of the box and has steam cloud saves. pretty good
does it really have cloud saves? this is actually huge
No, im a liar.
Completely ruined emulation. Also, proper standalone emulators had proper desktop style user interfaces whilst retro-roach uses a console style piece of shit.
come now, why would you want any option at your fingertip in two clicks, when you could scroll through miles of irrelevant options to find the one setting you need
Yeah the UI is god fucking awful.

Fuck off, Retrofag.
It didn't obsolete jack shit. It's just a front-end.
Project 64 is timeless

>run ahead.
is there a single case where that made a tangible difference in any game
Yes, some games have inherit input lag even on real hardware. For example, Mortal Kombat 2 (SNES) has like 11 frames and Final Fight 2 around 6 frames. They are the sluggiest pieces of shit, but became very snappy if you remove the dead input frames.
I thought it only cut one frame
It does. It's mostly placebo. Try telling that to this deranged spammer.
Nah, it can you way beyond that. You need to know what you're doing or you can end up with missing frames instead of just dead input time. For the most part, most games have +1 or +2 frames of delay, but there are games +5 and more. It makes all the difference in those situations.
>download duckstation

>download pcsx2
>add as non-steam game
>it just works
as opposed to
>download retroarch
>setup psx core
>problems

>could already be playing
Obsolete is not a verb.
Those emulators just make up the cores in retro arch. Also I already have a DE, why would I want a second one just to play my emulated games.
>literally all it does is be a unified UI
>said UI is fucking garbage
chudarch shills are working overtime I see
Only brainlets hate it.
>killed duckstation
yeah, it's cancer.
Beetle PSX is better
Objectively false
>revitalised PCSX2
yeah it's based
Is that the reason why duckstation guy joined the pcsx2 team
It sucks balls, but I use it out of necessity or convenience on handheld devices
I played through every vidya worth playing. Stop living in the past and look forward to the future.
EXCELSIOR!

It's fucking both, the front end is just optional.
Just download the emulators separstely if you want, brainlet.
I've never understood the need for this thing. I use four emulators and they're all extremely easy to manage.
Still using standalone emulators.
Seethe and dilate.
I only used retroarch because I had issues with other ps1 emulators at the time, and I wanted to play SotN
>zsnes
does it have any advantages over bsnes?
That it runs even on ancient hardware. But so does Snes9x.
I've been using nothing but shmuparch (an alternate version of retroarch optimized for shmups), please recommend me some good vidya for retroarch.
Super Metroid
Mega Man X
Why the fuck does it matter if duckstation stops development? What was the emulator lacking?
I use launchbox to just have everything all in one place and no need for using the mouse and strictly just the controller
Launchbox with RetroArch for all the extra old games like snes/nes/Saturn etc and then individual emulators through LB. You can also configure LB to be however you want it to be
ok that's cool, but does it have snow?
It literally does have it.
is this the thread where boomers with dementia get mad and start listing off far more inaccurate emulators
Just use Libretro
>desktop UI of standalones
>core compatibility of Retroarch
I'm using Retroarch for 3rd and 4th gen. Works fine for me.
The only use I have found for it is for bSNES HD to play widescreen SMW. For some reason the standalone freezes and slows down in castle boss battles, but the RA core does not because it is an earlier beta. That will get ironed out of course, but hey, it's something I guess.
Based indeed, I've been using it since 2021 on my TV and it's fantastic. No consoles, no cartridges, no wires, no mess
I don't know why you need this, you can have steam launch any emulator and the game that you told it to.
Are there any other good switch exclusives/games with versions that are definitive on switch?
