yeah what is that tumblr shit, holy newhomosexual OP

And when you push the camera up so you can actually see in front of you, the crap auto-camera controls just slide it right back two seconds later.

add to this how there's no option to deactivate the fricking auto-camera on 99% of games

You can look at this with both images and not realize why the first is done?

The art is the dressing of a game. While the later might be where you want it, it's ignoring that the game is designed for the former and the art is designed around that.

It might matter if you needed a precision camera, but Ni no kuni is a RPG, the pulled back camera is fine.

Also it's often done to give players a sense of speed or urgency while running.

I'm an indie developer. I'm not a GOOD developer but I know enough to be able to add to this. Camera work itself can be someone's primary job for a while on game projects. There's all sorts of things you can program the camera to do. Some modern norms are making it so that objects that come between the camera and the player character at a certain distance from the camera fade out (if you've ever had an npc or wall block the view obnoxiously you know what I mean.) That tiny addition has programming needed and considerations that have to be made. Now how that applies to the angle of the camera is probably more of just dealers choice. They may have decided that a slight downward tilt messed up the view they wanted the player to see as they explored the world, or maybe they felt the view better gave the player more peripheral awareness. I also prefer your angle for 3rd person, but they may have just had someone saying "do this because x,y, and z reasons." Or we could be overthinking it. They might have spent a week getting the camera where they wanted it and said "ALRIGHT! NOW LETS GET TO WORK ON BOOB PHYSICS" and never looked back.

you can also let the player set the camera like he wants, it's something you can do in fricking quake (an fps)

Agreed and to add something: There is an angle to this worth mentioning, stable horizon, camera movement and motion sickness.

In the first screenshot it is much easier to watch the character move against a stable horizon. The more downward/moved up camera points downward at moving pixels when traveling (relative). Think of car sickness and concentrating on the horizon.

Obviously, this doesn’t affect everyone equally and the solutions to prevent nausea aren’t always the same. Furthermore it is the camera movement itself that causes more immediate kinetosis/nausea.

I just wanted to add this as something that developers do take into account when designing angles, through constant change and rigorous testing.

Now, if I change the camera however, it would be great if it didn’t reset back. There may be a good (unknown) reason for this also but immediately it would provide a solution for the posters image.

That ain't eveln half as bad as the new moronic meme where they put the character on the left or right side of the screen. For example, the batman arkham games.

From playing a lot of Dark Souls games, I have gotten very very good at the "claw position."

My right index finger is on the B button, to allow me to continue to run, while still having complete control of the left and right analog sticks, and 3 fingers, 2 for left, 1 for right, on the shoulder buttons.

I am currently teaching my SO how to play video games, and more importantly, understand video games. She doesn't understand the language of video games. She has no, what I refer to as "gamer sense." I didn't understand this concept until I watched her muddle through video games, and not understand simple concepts that I inherently get.

Regardless, when she sees me running, moving, and adjusting the camera, all at the same time, to her, it's like watching a professional playing a classical instrument. Not only does she not understand how to do it, but she doesn't know how to try to do it. She is lacking in that baseline.

She is currently stuck on the Taurus Demon. There aren't really that many summons before Taurus Demon, because you get that ability after the Taurus Demon. There isn't anything else I can do to help her. I have shown her all of the ways to cheese Taurus Demon. She just needs to execute.

Soulsshit always adjusts the camera high so I can't see where I'm running because it forces the camera to look at the ground. really shitty game design. they would probably play better as a top down action game.
