Art and combat looks good, but I don't know anything about the gacha system. I haven't played a Square mobile before, anyone here with some experience?

Why is the thread up now? Anyway, I'm very experienced with SE gacha games and I did almost everything there was to do in the CBT for this Octopath game. This guy has the right of it; SE goes through mobage like tissue, they have a shitton and consequently, they've axed a shitton of games. Don't get too invested in any of their games, but you can definitely have some fun dicking around as f2p, especially in this one if the CBT was a good indicator for the future.
For the gacha system, it's very standard with gems and an item that acts like tickets (there's also a paid/free gem split like many other games).
My advice is to save all of your rubies (gems used for pulling) for the step up banners. There are step up banners that can be used with free gems and they are the best bang for your (free) buck hands down, guaranteeing featured characters. As for who to go for, aoe healers and aoe buffers make the difference in what sort of content you can clear and how fast you can clear it but luckily this game has no stamina system or timed events (outside of the 2 limited collabs JP got) so you can take as much time with the game as you want, unlike other SE mobage that keep you on a daily treadmill of grinding the current event. You can also nolife the game pretty hard; I didn't get much sleep during the couple of weeks the beta was up. Oh, and try to get access to as many damage types as you can; being able to hit different elements is important but luckily it's also easy to get a varied team. I would say this game is an upgrade to Octopath's story and combat system with music on par with it and inferior visuals (but still good for a pixel mobage).

Some they let live forever, like BE and RSU. Is hard to pin down the reasons, one earns a lot while the other much less, yet it gets good support.

The CBT ends in a few hours and I just finished all the content my account can do. I was missing 3 of the characters that have Traveler Stories and the final Side Story requires you to wait 24 hours and I started it today not knowing that. Time to let you guys know what I thought about it over the course of a few posts. I'm sure this thread will die soon but I'll check in daily until archive if anyone has any questions about the game that I might be able to answer.
First off, when this game comes out this summer, it's likely to be my new favourite mobage. It's the closest a gacha game's ever felt to being an actual console jrpg. And not even talking about how a "good" mobage usually just reaches the level of a shitty console title at best, I'd say this would make a decent console game. Not the best, not top shelf, but solid enough to play and enjoy. The story's fantastic and the second chapter of each path really dials it up. Usually some of the best stuff in a story is saved for the very beginning to hook the audience, so I was pretty surprised to see it actually get better that soon. I love how deliciously fricked up it gets, it's probably one of most twisted games I've played. The Traveler Stories (character quests) are pretty short and the ones I've played weren't anywhere near blowing my mind and giving me chills like the main story, but that's probably because they tend to more wholesome and fun, just resolving a little arc in the character's life.
The music's fantastic, to be expected since they got the Octopath guy working on this title too. Better than most mobage for sure.
The graphics are not quite Switch level but I found them to be good enough to enjoy; helps that they're pixel graphics. The towns looked great and were pretty comfy to explore. Speaking of exploring, finding hidden paths that lead to treasure or elite monsters in dungeons was pretty fun and satisfying. It's nice to get some proper dungeon crawling in a mobage.

The gacha is...okay. It's the weakest element of the game. I'm a bit concerned about how many free rubies we'll get. I had just enough for 8 ten pulls over the two weeks of the beta and that was enough to get 52 of the 64 characters available at launch, which isn't bad considering I also got a ton of dupes. But I'd say around a third to a half of those rubies were from daily dev gifts to help beta testers get a taste of the gacha and play around with the characters. I got two 5 stars, Millard the cleric from the guaranteed 5 star pull during the tutorial and Sophia from the second step of the Theo/Sophia step up banner. 5 stars really are on another level. It certainly feels like 3 and 4 stars will be enough to clear everything, at least early in the game's life, but having a 5 star makes things much easier (good thing you start with one for free). It wasn't until I got Sophia that I realized this. Her damage is insane and her skills and passives are so much better than lower rarity characters. I got her late so she was a few levels below everyone else even after stuffing her with exp nuts, but she was my first character to hit four digit damage and when others were just hitting 1000, she was already hitting 1500+, 50% ahead of the squad. My team ended up at level 29, I can't imagine what sort of beast she'd be at level 100 with all her passives unlocked. I believe this game has a damage cap one digit higher than Octopath Traveler, now I can see why.

Millard didn't seem as dramatically strong as Sophia but he was still good all around and I'd recommend trying to get him at launch for the one trick he has that other characters don't: big aoe healing available at level 1. I remember there was an elite monster I fought in an early area that spammed aoes that did 300+ damage. If I wasn't able to just press a button and heal the whole team for 500+ with Millard, I'd be dead. Without him, I'd be forced to either level up a team more tailored to that boss (I ran a very generalist team in the CBT, one of each class) or find a lower rarity character that gets aoe healing at a higher level and grind them up. Time was not a luxury during the beta so I'm glad I had Millard, though when the full game comes out, you can take as much time as you need thanks to no stamina system or limited time events outside of collabs. But just like having a five star like Sophia makes dealing big damage a lot easier, Millard lets you breathe easy against bosses that use aoes (which were fairly rare). Well, easier. Those things still hit pretty hard and his aoe heal is quite expensive.
My three are main concerns are how many free pulls we'll get, what endgame content will look like and how easy it will be to upgrade characters. A video I watched of a day 1 JP f2p player showed him estimating he's gotten around 32,000 rubies in the two and a half years JP's been around (it's 300 for a ten pull) but he didn't pull much; he was still sitting on 14,000 of that 32k. He was still able to clear almost all content in the game, so that's encouraging. And I believe there's a few systems that weren't available in the beta that will make it easier to uncap or awaken characters like Hunts, fingers crossed for that. I guess that just leaves endgame as a mystery, but it'll be a long time before I get there anyway with how much content there'll be to get through.

And one last post to show up the final photo spot that was in the beta. I really should've changed my party each time to show off more of the characters, but I got lazy.
If you like pixel jrpgs or Octopath in particular, I recommend giving this game a try. It doesn't put the time limit pressure on its grinds that other games do, so it's easy to pick up and try whenever. So if you want to wait and see if the game's getting a good reception or stands a chance of living outside of JP, don't feel pressured to start at launch if you're on the fence. This gacha game has some of the lowest FOMO I've seen.
I honestly don't care about f2p friendly and all that jam. That is only relevant if the paid stuff is overpriced as frick and/or doesn't do much to begin with. Basically, if the payment model is only targeting whales, then f2p is interesting.
I'm going to see how this works. I'm spoiled by a lot of Gacha that have cheap entry fees and give you a ton for little money. The only squenix experience I have was Another Eden, which I dropped quickly. Ultra expensive to get anything, 2 different abos (frick abos, just do it like the good gacha that give you a 30 day pass and when it's done, it's done. Automatic renewel is so anti consumer), where one even costs like 36 euro per month.
If Octopath is the same, I'm probably not going to stick around. Especially if Europe needs to pay extra premium. Too many gacha where none of that shit is necessary. And let's be honest here. This is not gonna be good enough to make up for shit like what Another Eden does.
how closely connected is this connected to the console game? i haven't even played that yet
It's a prequel that takes place a few years before Octopath Traveler. Because the time gap isn't large, various characters from the OG game both minor and major appear as NPCs (and all of the 8 main cast will eventually be added in their own banners). The story is separate though and even if you've never played Octopath, you'll still get the same satisfaction from the main story.
If you have played Octopath, you'll be able to pick up on little nods like "hey, that NPC quest giver from Octopath that wanted me to explore ancient ruins for her is over here in this part of the world looking for other ruins and now she's a playable low rarity character from the gacha!"
tl;dr if you've never played OT, some references will go over your head (mostly in sidequests) but everything you need to enjoy and understand the story is in the mobile game itself.

If you've played Octopath Traveler, you would know that in fact, the combat is not "good." It's tedious as frick, with a shitty job system that requires you to clear a dungeon up to the boss, discover you don't have the abilities you need to kill this boss, travel back to town, and get someone else with the jobs you need, then go back and clear the dungeon again so you can kill the boss. I've never played a game so long before dropping it as I have Octopath. 60 hours in, and I'll never play another minute of it. Un fricking bearable
In this game you have an eight man party, so it's pretty hard not to have something to deal with most everything you encounter and even if you somehow don't, the "travel back to town" problem you're talking about doesn't exist in this game because you can swap out anyone in your roster with anyone else at any time, anywhere outside of combat. Same thing for swapping abilities, you can do it on the fly. Just a couple of the reasons why most people who've played CotC agree its combat is improved from Octopath.

iirc tressa was the launch banner in JP or close to it, haanit soon afterwards, and the rest were released up to a year afterwards
JP player here. The daily loop is just playing the game as if you're playing a single player game. You're free to grind as much as you want if you hit a roadblock. 90% of the new content are staying forever so you don't need to rush. One of the endgame thing is where you can challenge bosses, and if you win get a 5* of the boss to add to your team. Reroll your favourite, and just enjoy the game.

With the launch pool, rerolling for whoever you like most should be fine but if you want a specific target, aim for the cleric, a dude named Millard due to his aoe heals (see
). Aoe healers and healers that can grant regen, especially aoe regen, are great because regen frees your healer up to do things other than heal each turn.
Multi-hit moves are also something to watch out for; if a character has mult-hit moves, you'll find them useful. This is because breaking enemies and bosses is more important in this game than it was in original Octopath and enemies have higher break bars/shield points so being able to reduce multiple at once is great. Your starting squad should cover around half the elements iirc, so if your rerolled 10 pull can cover all or most of the others, that'll be good.
As for not fricking up, I'd say save your rubies for step up banners so you can guarantee 5 stars and don't blow all your awakening mats right away; use 'em on your higher rarity character and the ones you plan to use the most once you've gotten a little used to the game.
Is Tressa pay to win? Like in the original.

Okay, doesn't look like it. What a shame. Also seems to be generally pretty meh. A character that functions as an aggro drawer, can live a KO once and can buff herself to evade once for sure. Yet also a character with massive SP issues that usually should be solved with a passive that cuts cost in half.. if you are at max HP.
Counterintuitive character. The ult also hits with random elements, aka is useless.

Yeah, that does sound counter intuitive. Merchants are tanks in this game so the abilities to draw aggro, survive death and evade are all good, but the SP costs -50% at full hp is a weird thing to give her. That passive is part of why Sophia is so darn good, because a mage that can easily spam nukes all day is awesome and you can use the front row/back row system in this game's combat to move her out of harm's way and heal up to regain the passive (hp/sp automatically regens at end of turn for characters in the back row) then pop out with extra BP to drop a cheap, strengthened nuke.
On a tank though, it just seems silly.
Collabs and seasonal holiday stuff are one of the few things that are limited.

Yeah, I was wondering why that guide put Millard dead last. Looked like it prioritized damage dealers and admittedly, he really sucks when it comes to damage. But he's the only healer in the game that can aoe heal right outta the box and I found him to be invaluable. There are other healers that can eventually get an aoe but they might need to be ranked up first which can involve more gacha and a good bit of investment that would've been better spent on a 5* healer anyway. As soon as a boss injures 2 or more of your allies at once, you're gonna feel it but he can make it all go away with one button press.
Wealth, Power or Fame?
only negative I read about Millard is that he loses value more quickly than the other 5*, as in the longer you play the less valuable he gets compared to the others. Theo has Regen, can toss that on everyone and then focus on attack. Idk how true that is tho
Wealth has the best story and the best perks imo (extra exp, gold, etc). It really doesn't matter though, it just determines which Ch1 you see first.
Good point about Theo, he will probably be better in the long run. At low levels I tend to value the burst heal from Millard more.

Nope. Each unit has an affiliation with a path, all that does is boost your score for that path when you pull that character.
It doesn't matter which path you pick at the start, as the other Chapter 1s will open up after you finish the first one. In fact, you're meant to clear each path's Chapter 1 before going to Chapter 2 and so forth.

If you're talking about Nanna, Jose and Conny, those are predetermined. You will always get them to fill out your starting party. Go a bit further, collect the 300 rubies from the pre-reg rewards and do a ten roll, then reroll if you don't get a 5* you like. Scarecrow looks like he has good deeps, but if we follow JP then H'aanit will be here soon to fill the 5* hunter role.
what guys would be good to have
Viola is great, thieves are amazing in this game because they get multi-hit moves and even some thief skills can lower enemy shield points without hitting weakness (all combat revolves around breaking the enemy by lowering shield points to zero).
Sophia is the best mage right now, lots of ice damage and lots of SP to keep spamming spells (plus she cuts SP cost in half at full hp).
Theo has aoe regen, that's quite a valuable thing to have and can cleanse status.
Millard is the best healer at launch, also has rare good aoe heals.
Lynette is a great buffer and pairs well with Viola because she lowers fire res and Viola gets some fire skills.

Yeah, that's a bunch of random trash. You will end up using some of the lower rarity chars to round out your party so you can hit all the elements, but you'll want at least one 5* from your reroll.

I'm new to this whole gacha bullshit, I just want to play the Octopath prequel, really. Does this optimization stuff matter or can I just go that 10 roll, get whatever, and play around without having to worry too hard about getting walled later on?

The game can be cleared with 4* which you get plenty. If you're JRPG virgin you can just look up guides, if you played JRPGs before, you can clear everything with grinding and brain power.
The game throws you a free 5* during the first min, so you already got a good cheat power there no matter who it is.
The reason people reroll is cause some of the 5* are hot girls, and hot girls makes the game more fun cause they are hot.
Alright, great. It's not the "JRPG Virgin" part, just I've heard of gachas where if you don't get the right 5 stars it's impossible to stutter through the story. Might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it's still better to know up front, I'd argue.

You're good bro, no worries. Just do that ten roll so you have a full party then play it like a normal game. If you see a step up banner come out, pull on that to get some guaranteed 5* (the strongest) characters. You'll also get more 5* characters for free by beating them in the arena. I was in the beta and did all the content with relative ease just yoloing pulls but that's obviously not representative of endgame. However, I watched a vid from a dude who played JP for a long time and he had cleared almost everything in the game without spending money on the gacha. In fact, I think he had only spent around half or two-thirds of the free rubies he got in the game's first year, so he wasn't even pulling all that months.
Reroll your 10 pull for someone you like. If you want Tressa, reroll on her banner. If you want someone else, reroll on the general pool (Chance Encounters, Tressa isn't in there yet). Then save your rubies for step ups to guarantee 5 stars.

That's 20 ten rolls? 6000 rubies in that timeframe does not sound doable at all without spending, I don't think we got 6k even in the two week CBT even with the devs handing out extra rubies almost every day for people to pull with and test the characters.
Yeah, you're gonna wanna outlevel elites significantly before trying them. I killed all the ones in the beta, so the ones in the wilderness around the three towns and in the caves/dungeons found in those wilderness areas, but it wasn't until near the end that I could do that, so around two weeks of playing and leveling and getting better gear. Though this time around I don't have aoe healing so I don't even know if I'll try the toughest ones until a cleric gets featured on a step up.
Feels like an actual game to me.

You can pull 5* units at 4* and 4* units at 3*. If you pull their lower rarity version first and later pull their higher one, they will upgrade for free.
And don't forget to spend your traveler's seals. They're this game's version of tickets, lets you get a few extra summons from the permanent pool for free and it looks like we get 3 in the mail. You never know, you might get an extra 5*.
Is Scarecrow really that bad?
It seems like he's fine, but H’aanit is coming soonish. Scarecrow does seem to have pretty high (maybe the highest?) multihit skills, though.
Once you guys start playing, get to the Nameless Town asap. Pretty sure you can fast travel there directly from the world map after finishing the first chapter you pick. It has a questline that has timegated objectives, so don't make the mistake I made of waiting to do it on the very last day of the beta.

Okay, here's what you do. Look at all your characters, check their Status menu. Go to Change Skills to take a look at what their skills do.
Each character gets skills of one weapon type and one elemental type. For example, Tressa covers spears and wind. If you don't see an elemental skill on a character at level 1, tap Learn Skills to go to their job board. Tap on the greyed on Battle Skill on the first board, it should have an element. If not, head to the second board, check out the Battle Skills there.
Once you know what elements your characters can hit, form a squad of eight that cover the most bases possible. Here's my party, it covers every weapon type and every elemental type except for lightning (I have two low rarity lightning characters I can level up if I really need to hit it, but all monsters and bosses have multiple weaknesses anyway).
When it doubt, form a squad of one of each class and use whichever ones have the most stars.

Don't forget to use exp nuts to get a head start in leveling your squad. Hit the glowing white diamond plus sign next to their level on their Status screen.
And speaking of leveling, watch out for Cait Siths. You can see them on the map, they look like cat dudes carrying a bag. They are not like the ones from Octopath; these ones are incredibly easy to kill, don't flee, give TONS of exp and reset in the same locations every day or so. There should be a few around each town so try and find them as soon as you can and get to killin'.

Congrats! For those who have been wondering if she's any good, I noticed she has a 3-hit move at level 1, which is amazing! Multi-hit moves are the best moves in this game and most of them are 2-hit. At much higher levels she can donate BP, which I believe is totally unique to her, at least for now.

I'm trying to remember the one from the beta. Pretty sure it was five steps, with 2 featured 5* characters (Sophia and...Theo maybe?). You were guaranteed one of the 2 five stars on the final step and the other steps gave you awakening stuff for them. The big thing is, I'm pretty sure some of the steps cost less rubies than normal 10 pulls, making it a bargain. I ended up getting Sophia on the third step but didn't get enough rubies to go all the way 'cause they only added it halfway through the beta after I had already spent a bunch of free rubies.

People are hyping up Millard (AoE heal at level 1, good for higher difficulty content, but supposedly will get phased relatively quickly; lacks regen) and maybe Theo (has regen). Another set of people are hyping up Lynette (buffs) and Viola (debuffer). Maybe go for a combo of 2 of those 4.
You could also pick one and go for Tressa if you like the original Octopath.

2. Use a path action, buying off the guy in the inn works. 20 gems
3. Level up characters from your first pull. This relies on having enough variety. The goal is level 3 in two factions. 120 gems
4. Achievements for leveling characters. This also gives fame influence should be able to get 50 gems from getting factions to 3.

Character skill trees have nodes that give influence. Beeline to those on characters you aren't really gonna use. Or even just beeline to those anyway. 3*s give 10 per node, 4*s 15 and 5*s 20. Level 8 lets you hit the first one, level 15 or 16 the second one.

Holy shit, they're having a Triangle Strategy collab! That was my biggest hope for this game, it's too perfect and too easy for them to implement for them to pass it up.
It's too early to tell, I'm just speculating based on what has happened in similar games. I'll go find the exact wording now.

The "character attributes" part is what I'm focusing on. It could mean that characters that were considered underwhelming on JP will be buffed to make global players more likely to pull for them. This is what they do in SaGa because as much as companies hate global's foresight and can't outright acknowledge it, they're aware of which banners people are hyped for and which ones no one talks about.
Alternatively, this could be their scapegoat for nerfing a character that was unintentionally too broken in JP and bring it into line with what they intended. This could also just be what's used as an excuse whenever a character comes out legitimately bugged. We don't know but considering we already got one example of the first point they mentioned above (different content order), we likely won't have to wait long to find out.
I give up trying to reroll for Tressa. Just gonna play normally and keep rolling her banner at this point.

Apparently not, I'll post this here for anyone else who needs info.
So what to consider when building a team?
I wrote out some basic stuff here
When you're starting out, you'll want to initially focus on a varied team that can hit as many weaknesses as possible so you don't get walled by anything. Then when you start to bump up against endgame stuff that only has like 3 weaknesses, then you can try building a team focused just on a couple of those weaknesses.
Multi-hit moves are very, very good. Aoe heals and hp regen, especially aoe regen, are very, very good and can change what sort of content you can do and how early you can do it.
I haven't found buffs to be very useful, particularly because they are small increases and tend to have very short durations unless you use a lot of BP to boost them. My thinking's been that you could do more damage just tossing out more attacks than spending turns on buffing (you always wanna be working on breaking the enemy) and BP that could be spent extending buffs could be spent doing huge amounts of damage instead. I could see myself being proven wrong about that in the future now; I'll need to experiment with buffers more which shouldn't be too hard 'cause I lucked into Lynette.
Just like with AE, not gonna bother rerolling. More fun that way, at least for me.

I think the only problem I've heard about it was people complaining was powercreep exploding but then I saw other people saying they went and buffed the original characters to do similarly xbox hueg numbers of damage plus they say you can clear that game with whoever and there's strong free characters permanently available so idk.
As long as f2p can do endgame in this game, it should be fine.
Something I really like about AE was that no content was limited time events, so I never feel the need to rush. I hope they do the same here, especially since there's apparently going to be a nier automata event.
The collabs are limited
The main thing is amount of time needed to be spent grinding. Most longterm AE players run macros to grind key dungeons and stuff for them to farm stuff like light on characters. And then the drop rate of class change and promotion items. Which seems to still be an issue in cotc Jp apparently. That said if you aren't worried about doing the highest end fights I think you can coast on by normally with the collab units and stuff for pure story progression

So how do they handle Gachas wrong?
Doesn't have any, or has one depending on perspective. Everyone b***hing is some casual that probably didn't even finish the main story. It gives you extremely powerful free characters regularly, a lot of times equal to or even better than the gacha. All content, even the non story super bosses, have been beaten with a team of only free characters. The dailies you do are short dungeons that take 1-3 minutes once you know what you're doing. There's about ~9-10 of them a day you need to do factoring in random drops and some extra runs you can buy every week. All content is permanent. Battle system is much more complex than the average gacha, but no where near something like FFBE.
The one downside I mentioned is the gacha itself. The rates are bad; normal banner rate is 1.2% chance for a targeted banner character, with 0.8% of that chance being a 4.5 star version. There is zero pity system; you can spend 6 months of currency and not get what you want. The currency income itself is very small; it can take ~20 days of daily income to get enough for one 10 pull, although new content released always has extra one time "achievement stones" attached to it, so I'd say its more like 10 or 15 days. $30-40 per 10 pull if you pay.
The thing that balances all that bad out are the free characters being so strong, and it only taking 1-3 days of dailies on average to upgrade a 4.5 star to 5 star (although a 1.2% rate is still terrible). There's also another thing they do where "new" characters are actually just different forms of existing characters. For these, if you own any form of the character, you can get their new forms for free if you get that form's materials out of the daily dungeons you do everyday. Its completely random and takes on average about 3 months to do this, although there are very rare chances every so often to just straight up choose whichever character form's random drop you want, so you can speed run getting a new form sometimes depending on luck.
About 4-5 times a year, they also offer a $23 deal where you can literally just choose any character you want. No RNG, you 100% are guaranteed to get who you want.
So the way I see the game, its sort of simultaneously the shittiest and the most generous at the same time when it comes to gacha. You can get all the characters as F2P no problem, but you have to be patient and take advantage of the 4.5 -> 5 star and the form upgrading system. If you have no patience, you're either not going to like the game or going to get completely milked dry as a whale.
AE is not Square Enix.
Speaking of SE gacha, I just noticed someone saying that almost all of them end up having global exclusive content and characters and as someone who's played most of the SE mobage (goddamn, what am I doing with my life?) I've found out that yes, that's definitely true.
Makes me curious what global exclusive things we might get in Octopath. Tressa came early but I'm talking about content or character buffs or even new characters that aren't in JP.
I noticed last night when reading the ingame news, I believe it was the notice about banners that had a little disclaimer at the bottom saying there could be character adjustments in global that make characters different from how they are in JP. In Romancing SaGa;ReuniverSe, another SE pixel rpg gacha that has the same community manager as Octopath, there are a TON of changes and tweaks to characters when they get released in global, almost always being buffs that in some cases act like a complete rework of a character's kit. It's to the point that any global account in that game is much more powerful than a JP account at a comparatively similar point in the banner timeline.
The only issue I can see is, SaGa gives a ridiculous number of pulls and has an easier pity than Octopath, so having even more incentives to pull in a game that's already seeming a bit stingy could be painful for f2p.

Good if you like certain characters that ended up getting buffed in comparison to being bad/mediocre in the JP version, or if your already strong unit got even stronger

Is the story/ at least better than Octopath, well as far as gacha stories go. The biggest gripe I had with Octopath was how disconnected all the characters were with each other. If the party is actually travelling together or if stories at least intersect with each other then it's already a plus in my book.

The story's great, but don't expect much from your MC. They decided to focus the story more on the NPCs to keep things more cohesive. Even despite the silent protagonist it has one of the best mobage stories I've seen.

Yeah that's fine. Scarecrow actually gets the highest multi-hit skill in the game, 4 hits and the main reason people pass on him is because H'aanit from the OG Octopath was JP's first banner so it felt like he got overshadowed immediately by a bow waifu. Global's already switched up the order so who knows when we'll get her. In the meantime, he's the best hunter in the game and even if he gets powercrept, who cares? Doesn't make him weaker just means someone else is a bit stronger. Have fun bro

Gilderoy, Theo, Sophia is pretty solid; you should be fine. Sophia is the best mage, Gilderoy's your tank and Theo has very, very valuable aoe hp regen.

If you read the notice for Tressa's banner, it says that after her rate up banner ends she will be added to Chance Encounters (the general pool) without rate up. However, I don't know if she'll be an off banner for future Chosen Traveler banners (ie you'll be able to get her on the permanent banner but maybe not on Olberic's, idk).

Anyone know if Hunts have been implemented yet and how far you need to go to unlock them? They weren't in the beta so I don't know much about them, but they look like one of the main ways to get uncap mats and hopefully maybe even awakening mats, though the later are probably just from gacha dupes.

This is one of the worst things that could've happened. I was looking forward to taking my time (it's one of the #1 selling points of CotC) and slowly working through the story while doing sidequests and exploring the world as I went. Dialogue choices didn't do anything as far as I noticed. The first three paths all have 3 chapters and they're relatively lengthy, now I'm in a new kind of story and I have no idea how long it's gonna be. Currently at 23 hours of playtime, I did quite a few side quests and stuff.
Did you buy armor weapon stuff from the smith? If so how do you get the materials? Feels like their droprate is ass
To be clear, that timed hunt event is only relevant if you have Tressa and the reward you get from it isn't really anything groundbreaking. If this makes you wanna rush through the game, don't.
Yeah I buy stuff all the time, and when you're short materials the blacksmith just tells you where to farm more and gives you the option to teleport there. It does take a while if you don't just kill every enemy you see, but usually I have enough from random encounters and buying materials off NPCs.
I do have Tressa, what exactly is the reward?
You get more guidestones for Tressa if you bring her into a hunt, which is useful for increasing her level cap but that's not gonna come into play until way later in the game

The gem gain in this game is really low, did 2 of the story lines so far and only have 30 rolls saved

So, you cannot link your account rerolling on an emulator? "backup data" crashes the game, needing the network disconnect again. There is no link account option anywhere...

I've, somehow, pulled Fiore (she was my starter) 2 times in 2 10x rolls and a single pull. I guess I don't reroll because this is an absurd monkey's paw luck. Least I got Sigrid. This guy's ladies are quite cute and I like that they expanded on animations for the sprites. They were quite stilted in the first game.
i know it's for the nostalgia factor, but i really still would've loved more liberty in the sprites
they already do dynamic animations for trees and such, no harm in more detailed sprites/animations, the aesthetic is still there. each character having a distinct action pose is a nice touch though

Some important advice. At some point you need to get some kinda squirrel handbook for the Nameless Town. You don't have to buy this with memory shards, you can get one off an NPC by progressing the King Pardis storyline.

Are you guys finishing a storyline before going to the next one or doing the 1st chapters first, then 2nd, etc? I was planning on finishing one before starting another one so I don't miss the story focus, but game wise it seems counter productive to go to higher lvl quests just to do low lvl ones later one.
Like the first Octopath, they want you to do all Chapter 1s first, then Chapter 2s, etc
The chapters are pretty similar, but the game goes into some major political plot stuff after you complete the first 3 storylines which is pretty interesting
Endgamebro, please tell me more about hunts and how they work. Are they a refreshable source of guidestones? What else do they give? I assume they're simple sidequests that boil down to "go kill that elite monster over there".
Basically once a day you can visit a hunt map that you've unlocked (you unlock more through the story). You actually get to kill several elites and then a boss elite for maximum rewards, and before the boss elite you always get a max heal. It seems like they drop guidestones for all the characters you bring, plus VERY rare drops for items that allow you to ascend and fill in the missing stars on a character. Besides that I can't tell you too much about it since I've only done 2, there's probably some guides up on Youtube for them
So it IS a renewable source of that stuff? Awesome! I was worried ascending was gonna be limited to the gacha, which is easily the worst aspect of this game. It's more incentive to get off my ass and unlock them, but I doubt that's happening anytime soon. Very nice to know I can slowly build up my travelers without pulling for dupes though.
Do you miss your daily hunt if you fail? Or does it only count if you win? I'm nowhere near the end yet, but I'm afraid that my team won't be enough for it
You can stack up to 7 daily hunt "tickets" so even if you don't do it you can save it for later I believe
Read the question wrong. Hunts are really hard to fail if you do one that's around your level so honestly I have no idea. You'll definitely be able to clear at least one a day even with 4*s only

I was only able to get 5* Lynnette and Viola. I wanted to get some other 5 star too, preferably a healer, but the rates are so fricking ass. I've rerolled around 30x with 4 emulator instances each time and only seen three 5* maybe twice.
Can anyone tell me if JP is limited? I've only gotten Viola to lvl. 27 but so far the JP rate is 1 for each level up. 5* chars have 99 skill tiles (excluding the initial one for the job) and multiple tiles cost more than 1 JP to unlock (the whole Veteran boards cost 71 points alone for 25 tiles). Do you get more than 100 JP from leveling up or do I have to be autistic about how I allocate my JP?
At level 100 you have exactly enough to unlock every tile, but obviously you're not gonna get there anytime soon so allocate into whatever you need right now
Since nodes mostly just cost 1jp until much later in the tree you can skip earlier small stat gains to reach later big stat gains sooner.
So, is every single quest from the nameless town the same "kill this monster that only spawns once a day for a lot of days or buy this item at the exchange"? I guessed some of them would be like that, but some variety wouldn't hurt.

Just take care to have variety before you start leveling your main party. My main party lacks light and dark damage, so unless the enemy has only one weakness, it shouldn't be problematic.

I thought first time story clears gave way more summoning currency but that may only be other more generous games.

Is not just me is it? Regarding how sluggish everything is. I accidently press Guide summoning option and it takes 4 secs to leave it. The menu are so damn cluncky and nothing moves at a pace you would desire, battle transitions just happens with no animation which gives a weird cheap feeling, and the devs are israeliteS with those 5-8 EXP nuts as launch reward. Login rewards gives you 10% of ONE roll with low rates and the chance to get fricked by gimped 5*.
Why did this game get so much budget that they got orchester music and VAs? Also no fancy animations for 5* kills the game for me. I'm out. The story seemed way too generic for me to stomach everything else.
I'm only bothered by the launch reward being those useless nuts, they're not even tasty experience nuts.
While I'd like some SaGa skill animations, I'm fine with the current gameplay.
Cliches aside, the story has some charm. Just beat all first chapters and the only one that didn't click for me was fame. Drug mafia lady and evil lord were better antagonists than average hollywood star.

For Traveler Quests, you can only play their prologue unless you've actually pulled the character.
I've noticed the menus hang for a couple seconds in certain places, yeah. Battle transitions have the same animation they have in Octopath Traveler, it's very quick.
The devs are incredibly stingy, true, and this is my biggest issue with the game. Over time I've dropped all the stingy gacha I've tried and only kept the most generous ones installed. This game has the trifecta of terrible rates, atrociously high pity (I've only seen Tact have a 200 pull pity rate and they eventually had to lower it to the standard 150...the month after I spent all I had, which was over 150 but not 200, and didn't get the unit I wanted) AND extremely low handouts of pull currency. The first two issues could be mitigated if the game tossed tons of rolls at you like Opera Omnia and SaGa, but it doesn't and it won't. The daily letter with 10 rubies saying "try not to spend it all in one place" is one of the biggest and most direct slaps in the face I've ever seen from a gacha dev.
I'm here for the story and to have a game that I can pick up and put down whenever instead of worrying about stamina or event grinds so I'll still be able to have fun with it, but to anyone who plans on playing this game like a collector and trying to acquire characters like in another games, run away from here right now.
The gacha in this game is awful for f2p and whales both, as it requires the latter to spend even more money for less than they'd get in other games what with the high pity rate. I suspect this is the reason the game doesn't do well in Japan and why it will likely bomb in global.
I'm starting to think my best bet may be to just play the whole game with my initial 10 roll of characters then dump my rubies on the collabs because there won't be another shot at those limited characters and I can pick up a bunch of offbanner permanent characters while trying for the collab ones.

If you tap Quests, go to Traveler Quests and then press his and the Prioritize Quest button in the upper right, your mini map should have an indicator to guide you to him.
Actually I googled it. His quest ends in a cliffhanger cause it is resolved in the actual Octopath game. Shame, but might look into getting the full game

Not well from what I've heard. I've never seen it on any of the lists of top performing gacha; I don't even see it shown when SE gacha gets brought up. It's managed to survive for a couple years and just got a collab, so who knows how long it'll last.
It's gonna suck, but at least you have enough for a couple step ups if you wait for them. I'm pretty sure the five steps cost 100, 150, 200, 250 and then a full price 300 for the guaranteed 5*. I'll have to see if I can find some video footage of the CBT and see if anyone recorded the step up there 'cause I can't remember for certain.
Shame. I absolutely loved the original game, and I like just about everything here aside from the gacha stuff. The other gachas I'm into (Opera Omnia and Touhou Lost Word) are super F2P-friendly compared to this.
Yeah, that's my main problem with the game. I like everything except the gacha, and this one has one of the worst gachas I've ever seen. I'm trying to play it like a normal rpg where these are the regular permanent characters the game has given me, but I know as soon as a character I really want shows up, I'm gonna feel bad.

The only time-limited thing so far is that if you pulled Tressa like me (she wasn't even anticipated to be at launch), you can get extra uncap mats by having her in your party when you do hunts. That runs out in like 2 days though and I'm still like 8 chapters away from unlocking hunts. It was a horrible week to be so busy. But luckily you can get generic uncap mats that'll work on her too, so all I'm missing out on is a somewhat easier way to raise her level cap. It looks like they will do this for all the featured banner characters so maybe if she gets a rerun I'll get another shot at her specific guidestones, but by then I might've already fully uncapped her, who knows?

If you want to awaken and limit grade tressa (basically upgrading hed), continue to roll. Or else save for future banners so you can get pity pulls

Kinda weird that there isn't a time gated pool with better rates from time to time, like gala from cygames, fair from poke masters, etc. But then again, the whole idea of a gacha with few new units per month and godawful gem distribution is odd.

The ring summoning being canon while the character quests exists is really weird. Are we summoning people that join our party for no reason other than being spooked by the teleport and then when they leave the shocked state and return to where they belong, they just act like they never knew us and give us a quest before really joining up?
Maybe the character stories are flashbacks which happened after the ring guided the mc to them and before he recruited them
This game is weird because it feels like the worst of both worlds. It's not a good gacha because it's too much of a single-player RPG and not a particularly good single-player RPG because of the gacha systems.
daily gamplay seems like hunts, caits, ad watches, daily/weekly tasks, and nameless town building
Slightly more content than AE's daily loop of grinding the same dungeon over an over for mats and ad watches, but still looks like it's going to get stale quick once you finish the main story quest. Hopefully the content they add will be at a good enough rate that there aren't months of downtime.

It doesn't run on the first turn itself right? Don't break it in the first turn, just reduce the shield and do it in the second turn, that should give you one more turn to work
cait always moves first so on the second turn he will flee before you can break.
There's a few npcs with 3 hit attacks you can hire who help with cait breaking/killing. 2 are in cragspire, i also hired a bow girl somewhere with 3 hits but i forget which town she was in. I think the port town tressa started in from the OG game

Yup, thieves. Some thieves even get skills that allow them to lower shield points without hitting weakness, that's the thief/dagger niche in this game. They also usually have mult-hit moves too, so if you wanna break, get a thief.

What’s the deal with Sofia? I keep seeing people say how she’s super strong, but even when everything goes to plan and she applied both the Ice and Elemental defense down debuffs at break, she tends to only do a bit under 400 damage when my other damage dealers can do over 1000 with less setup. Does she just get really good in the lategame or am I doing something wrong?
She boosts Cyrus dmg whenever he's added to the game, that's about the only thing she does exceptionally.
I thought she was a solo DPS, maybe I just got her role wrong.
I know about the break system but even when hitting neutrally my Tressa and Scarecrow do tons more damage. Plus it’s easier for me to set up Tressa’s taunt and Scarecrow’s Awakening than it is to time Sofia’s debuffs (which don’t get extended with Boost) with Break. I pulled a four star Fiore this morning and even she’s doing more work.
She is, but she also boosts ice dmg, and Cyrus is the big dick ice dmg dealer so she ends up being way better when teaming up with him than alone. I heard she is great in the beginning but then starts to fall off later on, still being good but not amazing or anything, outside of monsters with an ice weakness and being Cyrus' team mate.
dunno about sofia, but are you hitting an enemy that's weak to the damage you're using too? makes a pretty big difference

Why does it feel like rubies are so hard to come by? It's like they give you a very small amount for feats and those will eventually dry up. Wish there was some sort of daily log in bundle or something at least.
Extremely stingy game, that's just how it is. I'm curious how the Bravely Default collab will be handled. Worst case scenario is they pretend no ones knows about what happened on JP and milk us for all we're worth. Best case scenario is they give global what JP got, despite not having the same bugs, and it becomes the greatest thing to happen in the game's lifespan.

I'd say the chances of global getting this are close to zero considering it won't go through the same bugs and I'm sure the devs wish they could forget about this. It's one of the best compensations I've ever seen (compare it to Azur Lane's recent triple emergency half a day maintence that gave a tiny bit of stamina and gold as comp for example). Only way we'd get anything like that is if the whole global community was aware and b***hed about it, which won't happen. I'll still save for Agnes regardless, she's cute and her kit seems awesome for a healer. And of course, limited FOMO.

Endgamebro here, it seems like we got way more story chapters in the game than JP did at launch. This is both good and bad. Good because obviously more content is nice, but also bad because some of this content wasn't meant to be played until a few months after launch when everyone had high level rosters. The level 50 hunts I'm doing daily rn are very easy and give a lot of exp, so just taking your time and hitting those daily hunts and quests should get you through everything just fine.

Apparently we also get 10 rubies per 10 days and 100 rubies per 100 days (not that much I know), and the story chapter rewards rack up over time. I currently got about 2200 rubies saved up, stopped rolling when I got just enough to get through the content. I suggest everyone does the same.
So assuming 4 weekly quests a month, 3 10 day rubies and 30 dailies, we'd get 300 rubies a month.

Tressa was my favourite character in the original game - I installed at launch and was rerolling for her until the following night which was a miserable experience. After using those free seals, this is what I ended up with. Three of my four 4* characters were merchants. Should I hang onto this?

i went through reroll hell for tressa too and honestly i'd say just do some more guidance and hope you get something better than all those 3*s, else you can overlevel content if needed, it's just a singleplayer rpg in the end

The gameplay is fun, it’s basically the original Octopath traveler with eight characters on the field instead of four (although only four actively fight; the other four can sometimes apply buffs but mainly just recover HP and SP). The main problem is the gacha system, as free currency is hard to come by and it cost $30 to do a tenfold.
If you liked Octopath 2018 you'll like this. The only thing that might make you like it less than the original is no ENG voices and possibly being screwed by gacha, which us fixed by rerolls pretty painlessly. It feels like one of the few real games I've ever played on a phone.

There are 8 siblings you can acquire as playable characters in the game, they're all 3 stars iirc. There's one of each job so you can build a team of all 8 if you want. They're all on a journey trying to succeed at their chosen vocation so they can thank their parents for all the hard work and money they had to spend raising eight kids.

Once you start on the nut garden everything you need for the quests will be from the exchange and not be one of those basic 3 materials. So you can sell them in the exchange for 5 shards each to buy what you actually need for stuff. Like the nut garden wants soil, then you'll need fences for the sheep field, etc

Bros... I've done it... I caved in and did all 5 steps since I hadn't pulled before. I only got a gilderoy and viola dupe and they're my only 5*s.
Which 4* dancer is the better one? Should I also run the 4* dancer that can heal along Cedric?
I want to do the character stories but it's taking a lot of time and I'm slow, should I focus on the main story for now? Am I missing out?
I'd suggest you keep doing main story at least until you unlock hunts. You get it after finishing the 3 Master of X quests + 1 epilogue chapter.

Get rid of them for someone with lvl cap 60 if you can, else you're gonna get stuck on higher leveled enemies because you don't have the extra stats nor can you equip better items.
that's the part that sucks, the game's a gacha so you want to use your favorites because there's an option to do so, unlike traditional rpgs
but you're literally walled from using your favorites, or worse, if you had poor luck and you can't make a balanced team because of which, and that's further compounded by the break system really fricking over teams with not enough coverage

Skipping Heathcote even though my only thief is 3* Billy.
I'm on the fence about the step up though bros. My 5 stars are Fiore, Tressa and Lynette. Sophia would be very nice to get as I loved using her in the beta and my scholars aren't very strong. I already have Fiore, but getting dupes in this game seems pretty powerful and I don't think I can awaken her any other way (warrior is my fave job and I love warrior chicks).
However, I only have 1183. After tomorrow's dailies I should be able to do all 5 steps for 1200 rubies, but that would cost me everything I have. Do I guarantee a 5 star by giving up all my rubies, or do I continue to wait for a collab step up?

Wow, that is pretty bad. I was hoping for a 50% chance of a featured character. I'm tempted to do the first step even without it having a guarantee because 150 for a ten pull sounds like a great deal in a stingy game like this. But I recognize that'd be falling for the instant gratification trap, and that's 150 rubies I wouldn't have for a future step up. I think I will keep saving for a limited collab step up. It'd be different if I had 2400 rubies instead of 1200 because then I could safely run the step up and still have enough for another in case global goes full moron and drops NieR next week to make a buck or something else crazy like that.
Yup. You could get multiple 5 stars throughout doing the five steps. But you could also get just the guaranteed one.

Sounds like a good idea. I recently learned that they eventually add endgame boss fights where you need to make a team entirely out of one job, so you'll be glad to have two 5* merchants.

it was fine when it was just his story we were following, but now cotc has tons of traveler's quests where we're just casually breaking into houses and robbing people and trying really hard to robin hood the whole class because it makes no sense otherwise
Is IS a Fiore and Sofia banner, right? Because I’ve rolled a version of every 5* so far on that one except Theo or the focus two. I’ve gotten Gilderoy in particular three times, and I was able to luckshit my way to a IV Tressa in half the rolls on her banner.
