According to Maxwell Atoms, Billy was widely loated by mothers when Grim Adventures was airing and he frequently got letters about how terrible he was.

What were your thoughts on Billy when you watched it as a kid? Did you find him funny or annoying?

borderline annoying and almost never funny. Mandy and Grim carried the show

I personally found him stupid even as a slapstick fool.
I was fricking already watching Blackadder by age 9 so I was comparing him to Baldrick, an actually funny simpleton clown.

Loved Death and Mandy though. They were great.

Billy was really annoying, the show was done best when Billy learned lessons and "changed" or when it focused on Grim and Mandy.

well, he was annoying but it almost always led to funny stuff happening so I also found him hilarious.

My mom hated the show but it wasn’t Billy she hated it was Grimm. Anything to do with occult or devil stand ins (like she also hated PPG because of Him and Courage the Coweredly Dog in general) she didn’t want me watching so I had to sneak watch but eventually she gave up when I turned like 7

Billy was the worst part of the show, even as a kid I felt like he was gross and annoying just for the sake of being gross and annoying, he was never funny like Mandy or Grim

I liked Billy. He was the standard idiot archetype but with a lot more absurdism in his humor. Patrick and Ed were actually pretty similar characters in terms of their style of humor. Writers have a habit of making idiot characters secretly semi-intelligent (e.g. the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma).

Most of those are mid 90s.
Late 90s is like shit from the very late 00s early 10s.

I bet being a kid today would be interesting with Twitch streamers. They're hell more engaging as a thing than TV. You literally provoke them at a push of a button.
Wish I had that shit as a kid. Best we had was like msn messenger.

Do you think childhood starts when you're 10? Kids born in 1996-1999 definitely grew up on the PS2.

Most of those kids from 1992 to 2003 actually still had this thing called "hand me downs" and "multiple siblings" so I was raised with the SNES, N64 and PS2 all at the same time. I played all 3 too because I loved Yoshi's Island, OoT and GTA interchangeably.

This is nothing like recent times:
            >when the smartphone was introduced
Which is one major divider. Also:
            >when VR became big again and much much better
Because most older kids are even ignoring that.

Most kids in the 90s and early 00s shared a lot of their game backgrounds.
We're gonna start seeing VR threads on Ganker in a couple years time and I bet oldgays will complain that it's "spam" because they don't realize it's a different generation of kids.

My mother thought he was "pretty lazy design" but I think she laughed at the show at some point.
I only ever saw it in hotels because we never had cable until the 10s.

But then again, my mother also bought be GTA SA, VC and III.
Once she accidentally bought me a box of "kung fu" dvds with heaps of sex in it, because she thought it was "just some Jackie Chan stuff".
They boring as frick, other than the sex scenes.
Shame cause I actually like kung fu action.

Really? Because my mom noticed the PG version horror stuff (skinless flesh and guts, brains episode, cannibalism, reverse death, etc) than the characters. Though she really didn’t care about it much.
As for Billy I don’t mind him since he’s not as bad as what I am Weasel or Cow and Chicken characters. Plus his shit is balanced out by other characters a lot and he had a lot of episodes that I liked such as Lord Byron, or the Clownphobia episode.

My mother's opinion was irrelevant because I ended up playing and watching what my older sisters were doing.
So that mean gore and horror films.

Ghost Ship and Saw were pretty fricking nuts at that age, kek.

        >I Am Weasel
You make a good point with this one. The baboon was a thousand times more annoying than Billy. At least Billy could talk like a normal person.

I also hate the N64 controller and have so since 1997 as a child.
Especially the fricking joystick that goes loose in 10 minutes of play.

Why Nintendo didn't just make GC controllers from then on as pro controllers is beyond me, because those joysticks are phenomenal even today.
Though better yet (in specs and reviews) was this thing, which we never got in the west.

It always bugged me how Billy and Mandy and other cartoons always portrayed video games as being more 2D arcade-style games, even though they came out in the early 2000s when the Gamecube came out. Heck, the Gamecube was even featured in B&M but the games were all depicted as being basic 2D shit.

At least Adventure Time and Regular Show have an excuse, because those shows are doing an 80s nostalgia thing (even though AT technically takes place in the far future). But Billy and Mandy takes place in the early 2000s.

I like how persona 4 has flip phones and CRTs everywhere, when they were phased out super quick by 2008 in most houses, replaced with lcds, smartphones and laptops (which were finally cheap enough to buy for your kid).
Persona 5 made the same mistake in 2016, people were already switched from using standard calls/text to apps and social media interfaces.

But I bet they'll try to fix that again in the next persona (only to frick it up again because kids seem to be privacy aware far more than my generation, therefore more skeptical of using phones full stop).
Oh and people on here, largely in their 20s and 30s are still ignoring how kids feel about VR (which I know is big for them merely through cousins, because no one in their 20s and 30s gives a shit about them - to kids it's great fun).

I think they are just trying to give players the “you are out in the sticks” vibe with the old TVs and such. The phone thing is also pretty understandable. The Japanese love their flip phones. Hell they didn’t fully started integrating smartphones till like the end of 2000s.
