If a game has a ton of factions, the choice probably doesn't matter much so you either go with your own country, country you simp for, or pick anything by random. If it does matter, you go with the one that has the most broken bonuses for your favorite units because the devs can't possibly balance all of them.
I exclusively select for whichever faction I believe to contain the hottest women. I don't breed them or anything, I just like to imagine that there's a large number of beautiful women smiling and clapping whenever I make a good decision or destroy my enemies.

The only game that ever did this to me was CK2. Most strategy games I don't like to play England because being an island is annoying. CK2 though I find an early start playing as an Anglo-Saxon kingdom way more interesting than anything else, seeing myself conquering and shaping lands I grew up in.
