There was no time travel. The entirety of Alyx happened in the pocket dimension that G-man created in order to test Alyx and show his employers that she's a worthy replacement for Gordon
I feel like (especially after reading epistle 3) my headcanon is that gman initially let the advisors kill eli "the first time around" so he had a bargaining chip to take control over alyx when he realized he wouldn't be able to effectively control gordon in some cases. His employers would be angry if he were to ever harm the combine or the resistance directly, so letting the cards fall in this way was his way of creating some sort of leverage
>grew up playing cs >never played hl >try hl2 >boring >try hl2 multiplayer >i'd rather play cs >years later >people keep crying for hl3
homie i'd rather have l4d3. i'm still playing l4d2 over a decade later and enjoying every minute of it. give me another l4d sequel to last another decade.
on the other hand, I feel total apathy for left 4 dead and would much rather see a new HL entry, given that I have found each one in the series to be a competent single player FPS and a fresh experience, despite a bit of sameness between hl2 and ep1. to each their own
retconned 🙂 >inb4 it still happened
For 15 irl years Eli was dead and a supposed HL3 was gonna continue from that. Now a different/pocket timeline made that never happen. Might as well be a retcon.
>lame as hell and anticlimactic
I loved the 2000s butthole. I wish the original game was completed instead of it being cut short and left unfinished. Valve is not the same company anymore, and the vidya market has gotten worse.

The story was never the key part of HL and judging by Epistle 3 the supposed HL3/Episode 3 would've been lame as hell and anticlimactic
