You should have just bought the glasses as a mitigator at chargen, steve. Now fill those disad points with something else.
I dont play fantasy games man.
"Sorry, you're looking for the DnD group over there at the reta-err, special needs table over there."
Sunlight sensitivity is not a physical disability, but a supernatural curse.
This. Just having Sunlight touch you is enough to weaken you. "Drow" is from an Elven word meaning "Traitor" and these "Traitors" were punished for never again dwelling where the sun shines.
Depends on the equivalent time. The Dark Elf is dressed like a Victorian gentleman in this picture, so I'm guessing this is Warhammer era type Steel and Shot fantasy? Glasses would be available, and perhaps tinting them to keep out excess light possible, but it would take a while for an expert to make them, and they'd still work like shit.
The fucking eskimos have those stupid slit visors. If a bunch of primitive snow morons could come up with sunglasses before they even had houses that don't fucking melt in the sun, what's your setting's excuse?
The slit visors also limit your field of vision enough that you're probably taking that disadvantage on Attack rolls and Perception checks anyway. You've in-universe solved the pain problem, but you haven't solved the actual mechanical problem.
This, if someone wants to play a Drow, they're gonna have to convince the rest of the party to mostly operate at night, or they've got to explain to me what kind of protection they're wearing to protect themselves from daylight and even then, they're gonna have disadvantage from sunrise to sunset.
>I cast minor conjuration to create tinted glasses.
>WHAT DOES THE DM DO TO THE DROW PLAYER!?
Well there's a few problems.
First, bold assumption that a drow can just walk into a shop and buy something normally. Surface folk tend not to like drow.
Secondly, sunglasses weren't invented until the 18th century on Earth, as the technique for making them didn't exist. While D&D is anachronistic as Hell overall, 18th century stuff is still a bit further then I'm willing to go. So the sunglasses you want don't exist.
You could, however, acquire a very large hat.
goes for you as well
This is silly. No, the technology did not exist, but that didn't mean it couldn't have existed if anyone wanted it. Necessity is the mother of invention, and having a powerful advanced society that needs these objects to hang out in the daytime on the surface counts as necessity.
Regular eyeglasses date to the 1300's or earlier. Colored (tinted) glass goes back to fucking Egypt. If you aren't concerned with corrective vision, a pair of red-orange or gray tinted glass circles is well within the technology level of ancient Rome, and that's without even getting magic involved.
A better question is one of cost and control. There would be little to no reason for anyone on the surface to sell these items, for the same reason the technology wasn't developed on Earth for so long: Nobody needs them. Ironically, the only place you're likely to buy these glasses is in a Drow community, and they could easily have a tight grip on the supply as a measure to control which members of their society have access to the surface.
Drow society does not need (or want) to "hang out in the daytime on the surface". Once in a while one weird ass freak drow decides they want to do such a stupid thing.
If Drow society is sending a sanctioned elite hit/kidnapping squad to the surface, giving them day-goggles purely in case of emergency is obviously a good idea. What if they're ambushed during the day? What if the target is never out in the open at night? Sure they may have advantage in the dark, but sometimes shit fucking happens man.
"Herp-derp, I'm more committed to aesthetics than doing my job." -All Drow, according to you.
Play a dwarf you get dark vision and no sunlight sensitivity.
Bold, assuming I ever get to be a PC
You get half the darkvision that drow gets. 60 ft. verses 120 ft. It can make a difference.
Duergar also have superior dark vision 120 ft. But you get sunlight sensitivity bringing you back to being a godcursed basement dweller.
>If Drow society is sending a sanctioned elite hit/kidnapping squad to the surface, giving them day-goggles purely in case of emergency is obviously a good idea
"In case of emergency?" The priestesses will just say that the drow were idiots for not being able to get away and deserve whatever happened to them. Chaotic Evil, remember? And on top of that Lolth is actually insane.
"Welcome back agents, I trust it you disposed of the target?"
"No, they were in a well-lit area and refused to leave for 12 hours."
"Well, I guess that's just how it is sometimes. Sorry, but I have to kill you now."
Chaotic Stupid morelike
First, it has to be more than "well lit", the light blindness only kicks in when confronted by sunlight, either natural or magically created.
Second, drow time their raids to happen at night specifically to avoid natural light, and pick targets that are close to wherever they plan to emerge from. They're not entirely stupid.
But third...YES.
Lolthite drow are Chaotic Stupid. That's exactly how you're supposed to be playing them - classic evil "I'm SURROUNDED by IDIOTS!" scheming, hand-chafing baddies. Like if G1 Starscream actually succeeded in overthrowing Megatron and then made his second-in-command a duplicate of himself, and put that duplicate in command of the Seekers, who were all also G1 Starscream duplicates. And then for comedy's sake one of them is instead the Armada Starscream and one more of them is the Transformers Prime Starscream.
The point is that their society should have collapsed in on itself long ago, but it doesn't specifically because there is constant intervention by Lolth, who is by a wide margin the most active and involved of all the racial gods because she HAS to be because without her, her entire web goes up in flames.
...
...dammit now I want Starscream to show up in Menzoberranzan during one of Lolth's famous disappearances.
"PATHETIC DROW ELVES! Your goddess has abandoned you! Now I, STARSCREAM, shall be your new leader!"
It goes as well as the time he went to Camelot.
Inb4 he melts down all their weapons and armor to build a giant statue of himself.
Also most people hate dark elves with a passion even evil factions since they're chaotic evil. In some Drizzt stories he has to disguise himself just to walk around on the surface.
Anon, Drow can cast Darkness just whenever the fuck they feel like it. Granted that kind of means EVERYONE in the fight is rolling with Disadvantage but that's life sometimes.
Why do you need sunglasses if you're going into the megadungeon anyways? You've got four other party members to stop you from getting shanked on the fucking 20 minute walk over.
Sunglasses existed in ancient Rome. Not as a common thing, but there's documented instances of them.
It's not a "bold assumption," it's obvious shitty bait that still got a bunch of responses assuming it's an honest thread.
Akshually, the drow who worship the naked sword lady have entire communities on the surface. They're a minority, but not as small as you seem to think.
>This is what playing in the realms does to players' brains.
Oh I see, you're literally giving opinions on things you don't know anything about.
>Akshually, the drow who worship the naked sword lady have entire communities on the surface
Not in the world of Greyhawk. Your setting can have tortles running around on the streets with fairy waifus too but it doesn't make it not stupid.
This.
>Akshually, the drow who worship the naked sword lady have entire communities on the surface
Yeah, and they're nocturnal and live in forests - you know, those things with lots of leaves that block sunlight from reaching the ground. So they still don't need those sunglasses you mentioned.
My drow monk is already using a weighted parasol which is also her weapon.
Nothing? If I allowed Drow as a playable race why should I punish the players?
I don't "do something" to the player. It's not my job to "do things" to the players. My job is to present the universe as it is, mold the consequences of the player's actions as they make sense to that presented universe, and finally, if necessary, arbitrate or outright create the rules necessary to interact with said universe in a meaningful fashion.
If the drow character (not player) suffers from sun blindness, and if there are sunglasses for sale, and if the drow character can afford said sunglasses, and can access said sunglasses for whatever reason, then the drow character acquires sunglasses. This is not a problem, but a logical consequence of the scenario. Stop being such a fucking homosexual.
Sorry you need Ray Bans and you can't afford them.
Like, why would you think shops in D&D just have sunglasses? This is what playing in the realms does to players' brains.
have a nice day for being an elf.
Fuck’s sake, Jon. How many times do I have to tell you that there aren’t elves in this setting? You can roll up something else or go home.
I hide the thread

DM was new and let him make some with the help of a glass worker.

"Sunlight sensitivity is not an eyesight issue, it's a full-body sickness that not even padded clothing can suppress."
>"Sunlight sensitivity is not an eyesight issue, it's a full-body sickness that not even padded clothing can suppress."
tell me where it says that 😉
No. <3
there are no such stores + you can't find it because you're blind during the day + it's closed at night + they don't serve your kind + you don't know any artisans that can make them + people don't want to help you because you're a drow
Inform him that the drow's sunlight sensitivity comes from Lolth's curse, not any physical feature, and cannot be mitigated.
I tell you were not playing in shit realms and fuck your off with your "lgbtq lore"
That "lgbta lore" is older then you are zoomie.
>leather jacket over dirty hoodie
>'stache and small goatee
>features that could be mistaken for asian
>weird eyewear (yes, I know what they are)
>eyebrow piercing
>looks like he's absolutely fucking done with this shit
I'm stealing him for a cyberpunk character portrait
"No need. All drow are wearing aviators at all times; it's in the handout. They also communicate with each other almost entirely through dance (like spiders), though do ward off Eilistraeeans by yelling at them not to redeem."
sandstorm (d&d 3.5 book) has sunglasses you can wear for a few gold to do this (and protect from other sun-related problems introduced in the book)
Drows don't have sunlight sensitivity in my games. You can still buy sunglasses if you want to.
>due to your sun blindness you enter a temple of Pelor and not a sunglasses store
>dozens of Sun Clerics notice you and begin casting Daylight, Sunbeam and Sunburst
As a DM I get bored of doing fantasy racism. This isn't some libshit 'racism in make believe is still racism' stance even, it just tedious and bogs down a lot progression. It's fine if it's for a reason, a specific NPC specifically doesn't like drow and that's a puzzle they need to work around. But I don't have the desire nor do I enjoy making eery shopkeeper and quest giver vomiting up some anti-Drow diatribe as an excuse to make the players fuck around being offended on the Drown's behalf and not follow the fucking quest.
I also get the other side of it and RPing out the racism IS the fun part for some. Just not me. If my drow wants to go in a shop and buy sunglasses, my response would be "why the fuck do you think people in this hillbilly ass town know what sunglasses are?"
LIBERAL GM SPOTTED YOURE BANNED FROM TG!!!
>As a DM I get bored of doing fantasy racism
So don't let players play monsters
they're not playing as pedophiles retard
race =/= monster
he wants a comfortable game
>My sunglasses are too dark for you, traveler
whatever that means
lurk more
suck dick more
The town people scream in terror when they see the Drow approach and call out the guard, who beat the evil abomination unconsious, strip them naked and place their nearly dead body in the gibbet above the town gate as a warning to any other spies, slavers or demon worshipping murderers from the Underdark.
This. If you're playing traditional D&D setting Drow shouldn't be allowed to walk anywhere near a city without a good disguise. It's basically on the same level as seeing a Mind Flayer just walking around, kill it on sight.
*my lvl 20 drow genocides your town single handedly and stays LG cyz racist people are evil*
To be honest, if Drow society is such a shithole, you'd expect more political dissidents to attempt to get refugee status away from the Underdark. Yeah, there'd be occasional lynchings and getting shot by an arrow by zealous guards who spot the first drow approaching from over the hill, but if the town is good-aligned, and a traveling caravan of drow dissidents with children begged for refuge, promising to convert to the local churches of good or neutral gods and forsake Lolth, I don't see the heads of the town, unless they're pretty corrupt themselves or have lost family personally to Drow, calling for an all-out massacre of said dissidents wagon-train. Granted, there would still be years of mistrust, prejudice, beating from drunken louts stumbling out of the tavern, maybe KKK style arsonist attacks on the "dark quarter", but outright slaughter? Not really.
The real problem would come when news of the refugees reaches the Lolthite Dark Elves or Lolth herself. They'd send assassins, raiders, summoned demons or halfbreed demonic abominations out to attack the place if it's a small town, although probably wouldn't risk attacking a larger city. The response from the town would probably differ depending on how the refugees drow behave. If they refuse to take part in defending the town from their old neighbors, they'd probably either be turned over or exiled afterwards. If they did take part, that might help smooth over tensions.
oh god ima politicoom!!!
(Powergamer) "I want to play a drow because they have sick ass powers and abilities that give me a big advantage over the other players."
>(DM) "You know that thry have some seviere disabilities (light blindness, racially hated and feared) that balance out their superpowers, right?"
>(Powergamer) Yeah, I'm ok with that.
>(Later) "DM, Why can't I remove the game balancing disabilities!"
Yes, ok, you find a glass blower willing to make them. From now on, if you are ever hit on a 20, shards of broken glass are driven into your eyes and your character is blinded.
you don't play games
That's fine, but the Knave's Eye Patch is an attunement item my guy. And as it's a magic item from another setting, you'll have to either spend extra gold sourcing it or spend time tracking down a seller.
+1 to CHA because you're character looks really cool.
gem
is that what your father told you when you needed some discipline, fag? someone will slit your chud throat one day with this attitude, and it will be soon
people are getting tired of you invaders
