I think it honestly would have worked if they went for a gamepass model for actually acquiring games. Instead they made you buy them at basically full price, even normalgays aren't going to fall for that.

You don't actually own your games, you never really have. Do some research into software licensing. The TL;DR is that you don't own the software, you only have the right to use it under certain terms. This is true for physical and digital media alike.

You're a genuine moron if you think that's how it works. You don't own the software because ownership of software would mean ownership of the source code behind it. That's why all software sales are a license that grants you usage of the software without express ownership of it. Again, do you own research.

Do some research into proprietary licensing of software, this is how 99% of games are sold. You have the right to use it but you do not explicitly "own" that software.

                >any license afterthe purchase
Anon, what you are purchasing IS a license for usage.
Read the fine print next time you purchase a game, it's often printed on the back of the box and/or on the game disc.

                >own
Under your troonycopyslop law I also don't own the rights to my books, but I can still physically make my own copy regardless with a printer. I can't do the same for games that I paid for on Stadia, so for all I care it can burn in the depths of hell.

You do own the book as in the physical object that the book is. You don't own the game as in the software that the game is. This is not a recent thing, gams have always been sold this way with very few exceptions, it's a byproduct of protecting the source code behind software and discouraging reverse-engineering. I don't endorse any of it, so don't shoot the messenger as I'm only explanining how this shit works. You've never truly "owned" the games you've paid for.

I am aware of such laws, but at least with local copies you have the option to disregard these laws and protections in case it suits you (example: publisher goes under and no longer sells game) in order to continue using the product (like running custom servers). However a service like Stadia doesn't have this insurance found in local copies - considering the fact that you had to buy individual licenses for each game. A service like Stadia is a ticking time bomb, because eventually something will happen that will significantly change or revoke your access to the product (like a shitty update or the whole service going down). And when you realise that other services at the time like Steam or Epic allow you to keep your own copy on your computer regardless of what happens, it's obvious why a service would be inferior.

If Stadia worked like Game Pass it would be more palatable, but it wasn't. It sold games for full MSRP while requiring total reliance on Stadia servers. Meanwhile, I can still play VTMB long after Troika died, with fanmade patches that fix important elements of the game that weren't finished (like making your own fanfiction because you didn't like the ending of a novel).

I am honestly surprised that ~~*Google*~~ actually honored giving refunds to people. I think the only sad fricks that got screwed over were the ones that willingly subscriped to Stadia Pro (a subscription for 4k streaming and a small selection of games, like PS+ but even worse), which were not refunded even if someone had already paid the sub in advance to its sudden closure.

which sucked a bit for me because I did find value in stadia pro for about a year or so. I had no consoles at the time so games like Wreckfest were fun to mess around when I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to. I just think of it as having spent on an expensive dinner.

The problem is that emulators have legal issues. It would be difficult to convince nintendo to let you sell their games for your emulator. If you just make your own emulator from stratch and sell that, people would have to source their own ROMs. If people already are skilled enough to rip ROMs, or pirate them, they can just buy a Raspberry Pi or link their PC to their TV.
Gachaslop makes most of its money from asians that blow millions on it while riding their 3 hour train to work.
