          Elden Ring has quests?

          Anonymous

Elden Ring's quests are more like easter eggs, you aren't actually meant to finish any of them. You don't even have a quest log or any idea you started or failed a "quest". DD2 on the other hand is all about solving quests, it's literally the entire gameplay loop to get quests and solve them, so it becomes a much bigger issue with that game when you can randomly fail quests and lock yourself out of future quests without a fault of your own.

          >don't notice your pawn listening to Cannibal Corpse
          >he blows up the second tower
This is not an obvious flow of consequence.
More importantly, the only things killing Rykard locks you out of are a few armor sets, two spells, three talismans (one is a joke talisman that makes you weaker), and two whips. It is meaningful, but not severe or something that blocks progress.

But was their quest reward actually worth it though? That's the real question

          Anonymous

I mean there are some obvious differences here, right?

First of all no one plays Dark Souls (or Elden Ring) for the side quests. They are a bonus, this is evident from the fact you don't even have a quest log or markers. Making said quests missable adds to Elden Ring's "brutal" atmosphere. On the other hand, Dragon's Dogma 2 is a bonafide RPG that people play for chilling and questing, so it has to be careful with points of no return.

Second of all, Elden Ring allows multiple saves, so the player can create backups in case they make a bad decision. Dragon's Dogma 2 does not allow that.

Third of all, as far as I know, even if you miss a quest, the game was designed so that you can always get its rewards by killing one of the npcs involved in the quest. In fact you can even kill the NPC the first time you meet them and instantly get the rewards, that's how disconnected Elden Ring is from a traditional RPG.

Last not least, Elden Ring's points of no return are painfully obvious. You're about to destroy a city, destroy an organization, etc, it's stuff that OBVIOUSLY would frick up questlines in the area (or involving said organizations). Meanwhile in Dragon's Dogma 2 pulls the rug from beneath your feet, it deliberately tries to surprise the player.

It already tells you how to use Wakestones on NPCs, have a cheevo for it, tells you about where NPCs go when they are killed and how they are brought back once you get to the capital. Game can't really help you if you speed through every popup and dialog.

No but this definitely seems in line with the rest of the game where dragons randomly swoop in and demolish cities and you have to rebuild it. Same thing but now it's a plague. I imagine not being prepared for it and just giving the tools for rebuilding is the whole point.

I maybe be moronic but other than healer pawns and the off chance your pawn knows where a chest is how do you give them orders regularly?

      Anonymous

There is no need to issue orders to pawns. You can go through the entire game without doing it once.

There are other tells but they are so minuscule that it's impossible to notice them during a normal playthrough.
The eyes get a slight red shimmer but you have to to basically zoom in on their face and stare at it for a while to notice it and no one is going to do that all the time to check.
If you stand around in place for a long time they will grab their heads like they are in pain but again, you have to specifically stop in place for long ass time all the time to catch it before they nuke your worldstate.

      It's absolute dogshit.

When they start speaking up about something you can use Go! to make them guide you to whatever they're talking about. Or if you stare at a chest or some other interactable object/thing and hit go around any pawns that can do something about it will start trying. Like a mage with levitate will try and path and float over to a chest. or cast the bigass ice spike spell to break a wall

Gamers and dodging consequences. Name another iconic duo. The Dragonsplauge is hard to notice and easy to get caught out by, that's why it is dangerous. The average player is going to experience the scenario of their Main Pawn going full genocide on a town before they become wise to Dragonsplauge. You should live with the consequences and use the experience to avoid the same outcome in NG+
If your autsim is forcing you to seek 100% perfect completion in all scenarios, then that's your problem, and you should really deal with it

True that is really stupid, good thing it’s not a random chance and it has like 5 different very obvious tells “master I will act independently and ignore you” while his eyes glow red and he rubs his head like it hurts, and this also will go on for days and days before anything bad happens!

You have to be pretty complacent to let it get bad enough where they go apeshit and murder an entire town. And a reminder, anything in a pawn's inventory, equipped items aside, will get sent to a storage box if they bite it, so no need to empty their packs before feeding them to the Brine.

You can't even start a new game without going into the local files and deleting your save from there. Don't forget to turn off your steam cloud save too. Also don't do it too many times or Denuvo will lock you out of the game for 24 hours.

Single save file, single character, with the only way to backup progress with a "hard save" being to rest at an inn (which is what triggers Pawn Columbine). Also, can't even properly start a new game without jumping through a bunch of hoops and fricking with cloud saves and local files.

Just finished it. You have no idea how stupid it gets with it's save system.

    ENDGAME SPOILERS AHEAD:

After a certain moment the game prompts you with a NG+ option. Accepting it will lock you out of Endgame.

The Endgame is the best part of the game, but more hidden than fricking Ashlake in DS.

Endgame is on a timer. (which it doesn't tell you, until it's too late). Has unique superbosses that you can't all fight in one savefile, because of said timer.

Game forces you into NG+ afterwards, without asking. even if you still had things to check out.

NG+ is horrible. Enemies don't scale and you are forced to repeat quest you already did.

Is it really too much to ask to to throw me back into the Capital and let me finish the stuff I haven't? Plus maybe let me redo endgame to fight the other superbosses I missed?

I really, really liked the game, but what were they thinking?

Nope wish I was. You can't rest anymore. Everytime you do, you lock yourself out of content. But you are forced to rest to heal. I beat the game today and the two true end bosses I fought were really shitty climb up to weak spot and bash it till new spots appear, I assume its the same for the others. I think it always targets the red spots nearest to the cloud, with battahl and vermund being last.

The worst part about true end is that it doesnt use autosave if you die and only from the latest sleeping save or the start of unmoored world. It wiped 2 hours of my progress because I died from falling damage from jumping off a boss.

Is the leveling up systems convoluted as in DD1, as in having to plan all your levels beforehand, or can you just figure it out as you go?

No they removed all that and also added some amount of scaling to enemies so the RPG elements are basically non-existant now. It's just a pure action game compared to the first game.

Okay? Does that mean it doesn't matter anymore what you level up as?
Can you do 20 levels of a warrior, then switch to wizard and be as good as somebody who has been doing 20 levels of wizard?

What makes someone an Arisen? Having their heart taken by the dragon? Or is the Arisen targeted by the dragon and then has their heart stolen?

      Anonymous

I always took it as having their heart taken by the dragon. From the first game anyway.

      Anonymous

At least in DD1 the idea is that the Dragon specifically seeks out somebody with sufficient will and courage and steals their heart to turn them into an Arisen. So the individual is special because they have to have that will (which is the entire point), but they're made Arisen by the Dragon. The whole thing is just an elaborate chain of tests to find somebody with the will to become God, so they cycle can keep turning, fueled by their spirit.

Don't know if DD2 has a different take on it, because the MMO was a bit different. I only had the story from machine translated shit but
      >two dragons, white dragon is good and gold is evil
      >white dragon protects the kingdom but gets badly fricked up
      >specifically chooses heroes that fell in battle and resurrects them as Arisen by taking their hearts
      >heroes defend the kingdom in the dragon's stead
I forget if it goes any deeper than that setup, though.

man this mechanic is so hard to figure out how could I possibly know if my save was in danger
I almost kept her around intentionally because im on NG+ and wanted to see how it worked, but I ended up replacing her to get knowledge for a friend's pawn since I had to do all the starting quests and stuff again.
Anyway its a cool mechanic and easily discoverable and thus preventable, pay attention to the videogame you're playing instead of expecting your hand to be held and waiting for instant gratification.

Assuming you catch it in time yes. Say they get infected before you quit for the day, you wouldn't know until you next logged in what happen and it's set on timer.

      It's really poorly implemented

        Anonymous

        How long is the timer?

          Anonymous

That is the question of the day. Most are speculating it's a set of random times as some are claiming as little as an hour of logging off they come back to a massacre town even thought they tested the pawn before logging off. They also claimed to be offline and many think it might force the massacre if you don't have yourself logged on.

First time you get the promp, after that you don't and the issue is this is on the server end unless you log off meaning you might still get a killed town after doing everything right.

There's still obvious signs immediately after fighting a dragon, and if its like DD1 the means of infection is a special attack on the Pawn that it's hard to miss.

In Bloodborne if you screwed up a specific NPC quest that one character would literally kill all of the other NPCs.

          Anonymous

None of those NPCs are necessary for progress and only one of them gives an item that's even remotely important (of which there are several other places to get the required amount). They're functionally useless and literally just there for theming and appearance.

He killed mostly worthless ones with one that gave an item once a boss fight that becomes purchasable at the dream birdbath.

That's the thing about all the Soul games, short of very specif things they had a NPC that would still sell whatever the dead person was selling if fully removed from the game.

Yes a single NPC that sometimes only gave a very specif item that usually was either plentiful or to a very certain build and if you messed it u you had ways to correct it. Meanwhile this could wipe dozens of NPCs and you can't always control for it.

I'm having the opposite experience where reading the anger about dragonsplague and a bunch of other mechanics people have called stupid in this thread or elsewhere makes me feel incredibly divorced from what the average person seems to want out of this kind of game. Some of my favorite games are among my favorites specifically in part because of mechanics similar to this. Chalking it up to not understanding some incredibly broad/nebulous term or wanting to see people get mad is really silly.

Dragonsplauge is a thing because dragons are formerly Arisen that died on their quest and were reborn as a dragonkin, they still retain their control over Pawns like any Arisen this is them exerting control over Pawns

It was in the first game as a debilitation known as Possession, you had to kill Pawns hit with it.

You'd have to ask whoever came up with the idea, but I don't find it annoying.
Games letting the player fail at something with longer lasting consequences than just reloading from before a death or some other temporary pitstop is too rare. I feel the same way whenever I read people talk about being able to permanently fail substories in the PS2 Yakuzas like it was a flaw, or when people stress about the original Fallout's time limit like it isn't arguably too lenient if anything.

My issue is simply that it's a dumb mechanic that adds nothing of value to the game and can actively ruin your playthrough. Say instead of running off while you aren't in-game to kill all the NPCs they attack you when they turn and you can just put them down there. Or that they go off and become a sort of mini-boss you need to fight. That may actually be cool. This only serves to stoke people's paranoia and make you not want to engage with the game.

It can lock out the "true ending" pretty easily but a lot of shit does that, more so with the countdown clock

That's what confuse me with these defenders. It does nothing but slow down your game in a way a micro-transaction heavy game would.

The game says "kill the dragon" and gives you a world to do it in.

What happens after that is up to chance.

I don't believe you actually think the mechanic is poor. This thread and many others just make it seem like the majority of the player base is moronic and can't read or intuit changes in their pawns behavior, or are assuming that the average player is five years old and is incapable of noticing things. Dragonsplague is extremely easy to spot and the idea that it's some terrible mechanic that will destroy your game or is a product of "poor game design", whatever that means, is laughable.

Video games weren't meant to have 10 hour loss consequences.

            Anonymous

There's absolutely no proof that that's the case, and it's not like the dragonsplague stops you from progression. If you let it get that bad when the signs are obvious than that's on you.

            >poor game design", whatever that means
You don't even understand what the word means but dismiss the concept even though it's been a thing longer than video games?

No my issue is that you clearly don't understand what constitutes poor design choices in a video game and are attributing it to anything that slightly annoys you.

NPCs gate progression. The NPCs the pawn kills, with a cost of 5k and a wakestone per revival.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is trying to teach its neet audience a very important lesson about the real world. Every action or inaction has consequence. Leaving your home or not leaving your home both exact a toll, and you can never know how high it will be. There is no such thing as safety in the world. By making a choice or making no choice at all, you are merely choosing a different kind of suffering. You can never truly be totally safe.
