My mom bought this game for me when I was 7. She was actually totally okay with me playing M rated games. Pretty based in hindsight considering the social landscape back then was way less amicable to M rated games being played by underage children. Anyways, cool game. Kinda falls off near the end with all the gun use, but the atmosphere and soundtrack are absolutely stellar. Obviously I appreciate it more as an adult.

She clearly didn't understand anything about video games and just bought me them because I liked them. I was a huge fan of Rockstar and wanted their new game. I remember going with her to get my PS2 after school one day. We went to a Toys-R-Us and I got a PS2 with Turok: Evolution and GTAIII. Though we didn't know I needed a Memory Card and I had to replay my games over and over from the start until I got memory card a few weeks later. Bros.... it feels like yesterday but it was over 20 years ago...

I tried playing manhunt 2 and it just seemed really shit compared to the first one. Plot seemed really on the nose with the guy with you obviously not being real. And doesn't even have the snuff film angle to explain why you're guy would even go for such brutal kills. I dropped it, does it get any better? I made it past the gay strip club but just lost interest

not really, actually worse because the gunplay is really shitty even compared to the first game

I just played through Manhunt for the first time and I fricking adored (almost) every minute of it.
The atmosphere, the immersion, the razor sharp tension. I really wanna play something else like it but MH2 seems hard to get a hold of.
I’d also like to give a shoutout to the game’s stellar audio design because every bit of dialogue out of the baddies is pure filthy gold. The way the music ratchets up when you break stealth is so hype, I really feeling I’m running for my life.
Anyways yeah game is fricking boss as hell and I can see so many elements that R* later repurposed for their other games. Being able to go into first person and enjoy the scenery up close and at will, seeing all of your equipment on your character, having Cash and his enemies get bloodier and show battle damage…

all in all the entire experience is honestly really impressive and even better than I expected. I almost feel guilty for enjoying a game that is so grimey and dark and heinously bleak. Makes me think of the whole “Do you like hurting other people?” bit from Hotline Miami.

Condemned is the closest thing you'll get to the feeling of playing Manhunt for the first time again.

Condemned is one of my favorite franchises, played through both more times than I can count. You’re right though, it’s one of the only games I think of that comes close in these regards. My dream is to some day make Condemned 3 and I wanna slip some of Manhunt’s magic in there.

        >MH2 seems hard to get a hold of
Manhunt 2 was almost vaporware due to ESRB frickery so it released way late in the PS2 life and got limited releases but in the end the wait was for nothing. It had nothing to do with the orginal snuff film industry plot and instead you got some Fight Club knockoff.

Story and thematics aside, is the gameplay still about the same in terms of features?

I’m probably gonna get some hate for this but one other game I can think of that held me in a similar tension was the notorious vampire Rain.

Mostly just in the sense that it’s a stealth game with highly lethal enemies and a uniquely heavy dark urban atmosphere. Obviously I don’t think Vampire Rain is as good as Manhunt but I do think the game gets hated on a little too much.

I’ve been on a bit of a prev-gen stealth kick because I’m currently juggling Manhunt, Vampire Rain, & Velvet Assassin. Kind of hilarious how the game from 2003 is far and away the best of them.

You can get manhunt 2 but you'll either have to buy a physical copy off somebody, or download it off a random site(I did this but can't remember the site, it did work though)

The only one to depict murder as a terrible nasty thing to the point its a part of the horror experience. Every other game uses gore to make it responsive and fun and whatever buzzword you can think of.

I felt the same, might be because it doesn't have the premise of the first game. There's less of a reason to do things and it's more you're just doing it to do it

I just didn't have the patience for Manhunt 1, and still don't.
The story was interesting but the stealth was dull.
