Old fart here and I want to know if the Persona series would be enjoyable for me.
Played almost all of the FF games starting from when IV was still called II (minus XI, V, and III) and is my favorite series, Breath of Fire 1,2, and 4, Grandia 2, Star Ocean 1 and 2, etc. In terms of Japanese storytelling, I'm also familiar with a lot of visual novels, and Utawarerumono is my favorite, so it's not like I'm averse to the typical 'anime-ish' style.
I heard Persona games are really, really long though (hell, a friend said Persona 4's opening is as long as the entirety of FFVII's Midgar section lmfao) so I want to know if it's worth the time.
Thanks!

i'm older than you and the only nu-persona i made it through was 3. i made 2 attempts at 4 and one at 5. not a good series of games, it's like a poorly written anime with extreme amounts of filler dialogue and uninteresting characterization.

So does that mean 3 is pretty good? Worth it at least?

Not him, but 3 is good. Is it better than 4 and 5? Too hard to say.
3 has better pacing and in some ways a better plot overall, but it's also lacking important elements from 4 and 5.
4 and 5 interrupt the gameplay loop with pointless prattling too often, but the story is more intimate and better integrated into the dungeons. You also form stronger bonds with your party members and unlike P3 you can control them in battle.

Persona is good for finger exercise, you'll do lots of skipping dialogue/cutscenes in that 'game'. Overall, jarpigs are just irredeemable trash.

    Just my two cents.

The time isn't the issue; I don't mind playing a 100+ hour game if it's amazing. Hell, my favorite game of nowadays is Rimworld and I have more hours into it than any of the RPGs I've ever played combined, but I'm taking a break and want to go for a JRPG again for ol' times sake, and apparently the Persona series are the ones always pitted against FF, at least from what I get recommended by Youtube lmfao, hence it made me curious
Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough, but I haven't seen anybody that played FF games, especially the old ones, tell about their experience with it though, so I came here

        >IF it's amazing
Translation: if it's not amazing you don't want to touch it because your parents were alcoholics and impressed an unholy desire for satisfaction into your subconscious. Or at the very least instilled an aversion to a lack of stimulation.

Nothing a little therapy and mindful meditation can't fix.

I've played all the Personas: it's a great series. Great gameplay, good characters and good stories. But just expect a lot of dialogue

No problem with the amount of dialogue
I got 2 anons suggesting 3 for the best story though. What do you think?

Yeah, but it's the Persona with the worst dungeons. I personally prefer 4 and 5

The two games in the series you'd be looking at are 3 and 5. 3 is generally considered to have the better story, but it does suffer a bit in playability, though for you that's probably less of an issue than it is with most people. 5 is the newest and in terms of QOL is an improvement in almost every way to the games that came before it. 5 leans a lot harder into some of the more modern anime tropes, whereas 3 tries to take itself a bit more seriously, though both have their moments.

The basic structure of both is that you alternate between school stuff and dungeons over the course of roughly a year of in-game time. As you get further through the dungeons you unlock more stuff, get more money, etc., and as you do stuff in the school segments you improve your relationship with people, as well as other activities which make you better at going through the dungeon. P3 has one huge dungeon with randomly generated floors, as well as boss segments that happen independently every month and push forward the story. P5 in contrast has smaller, pre-made dungeons that are tied to the story and that you have to finish by a certain time.

Have you played any other SMT? If you have then I don't have to explain how the demon/persona fusion system works, which would be nice.
The gameplay in either of them isn't going to be that hard for someone whose played RPGs barring a couple specific spikes, so if you're looking for challenge it's probably not the thing for you. Conversely, the music and presentation in both are very high quality, so if that's something you care about they're absolutely worth looking at.

In terms of the Opening parts - yes, both are pretty long (a couple hours) in establishing the setting and the school parts before they let you get into the gameplay loop. 5 is a lot worse about it imo - you do get into the dungeon, but a lot of that first chunk of 5 is small tutorial segments one after the other, and they don't really let you go free until later in

Persona and trails needs you to spend quite a bit more time drinking whatever ideology the protag team holds than other jrpgs. If that's alright with you then go for it.

Persona 3 keeps things simple, but it's aged quite a bit. 4 has much lower stakes and thus gets distracted a lot more. 5 is the heaviest with pushing their POV despite the contents not being dramatically different, but it's also significantly more stylized.

Thanks, these are good stuff to set the tone
But yeah, I'm gonna give 3 a go. I'm looking at the other thread though, the one that's debating whether FES or P3P is better and see what I'll take
      Thanks again

I'd go FES personally? The female route in P3P is probably better as a second run through

They don't have to be immediately one after the other, have you never replayed games you like or are you a "backlog" gay?

              Anonymous

I don't replay games that are +50 hours long. Not a backlog thing, there are lots of other things to do, and not that much time to spare.
Though I'd understand it if you grew very attached to this game and want to revive those feelings again.

Alright I'll get FES then. The other anon isn't me
And hey, who knows, if I end up liking it I'll play the female protag of P3P then

don't listen to that homosexual, FEShit sucks ass
get P3P, FEShit does not even let you control your own party members (other than the MC) it's so fricking unfun watching the moronic AI play 75% of the combat in your place

          P3P instead eh, alright
I saw FES has the Answer portion. Is that even worth it?

            Anonymous

Answer's story is kinda ass. It cripples the development each character had to force the plot to work, and the few important bits of lore show up in 4 and the spinoffs anyway, by necessity

Persona (3 onwards) has lazy/boring dungeons but fun combat, and they add satisfying sim and time management elements.
They're also very heavy on exposition and (moreso with each game, pointless) dialogue, which can be comfy but also frustrating if you just want to play the game.
You have broad enough tastes that you might like them. They don't excel at any one thing (except the god-tier music) but they mix different elements well and create something greater than the sum of its parts.
Maybe start with 4, that's the best one. Original or Golden would be fine.
