This entire game is made to be as painful and moronic as possible in the early game or to someone who is just starting out.
Do you have anything specific? The difficuilty is either a lack of knowledge which you can fix by reading the wiki, or a lack of stats to brute force the difficulty. And of couse you should aways be cheesing everything to the max which comes with knowledge of the game.

Its a puzzle game. Every enemy is solved by a weapon type or a tactic.

Alps are my favorite example. You hit them and they teleport away from you, they can also sleep you from a tile away. If you go into this fight with bows you'll miss heaps and if you go in with swords/axes you'll be chasing them for days.

The solution is to take pitchforks (and nets if you want). Put your entire squad in a ball formation so everyone is as tightly packed as possible. When someone gets sleep, wake them, when Alp gets in range, you can hit them without moving. They instantly become a non-threat even with nothing but Pitchforks.

Everything is like this. Those super annoying shield undead? Axes, just break the shields. Goblins? Archer spam, never chase. Ect.

        >Its a puzzle game. Every enemy is solved by a weapon type or a tactic.
not exactly. there are multiple ways to solve each encounter. the real puzzle game is the rare bullshit fight like kraken.

          >there are multiple ways to solve each encounter.
You can brute force it sure. But its still easier to just make a slight weapon change in most cases.

I mean your way of switching weapons would not always be optimal. for example: I wouldn't want my fat neutral mace bro with mace mastery holding an axe for the undead shield spam. I could just daze the undead with the mace denying them into using shieldwall in the firstplace.

You poke everything while hiding behind a shield wall of super armoured goons.

Except the big monsters. Those you just cheese because you can do literally nothing else to them.

        Anonymous

        >shield wall of super armoured goons.
doesn't always work. most enemies ignore your tanks and head for the least defended flank. orcs would straight up smack them aside and kill your backline, ignoring the tanks.

Well you have top position in the right hexes so that you can't be flanked.

    >Early game is rng hell
    >mid game is a fun challenge
    >late game the undead invasion triggers with every battle moving at a glacial pace as every zombie revives
Best part is that undead shit happening is also rng so from beginning to end the dice decide how much fun you get to have.

For me it is the infinite shieldwall spam from ancient undead
Only the twisted mind of german could come over with such a thing and think "this is fun"
      Or geist, frick geists

Undead, you deal with mace and axe. Geist stay together or run away

extreme skill issue. the shield undead are bait. you ignore them and kill the polearm undead with your nimble flankers, ranged, polearm bros. if you don't have a robust party then you need nets and dogs to bog down the shield undead while you deal with the rest.

I said it was a unfun enemy, not hard. And like you said, if you have the tools (and stats) you can beat them easily and more, but that isnt aways the case and there is nothing you can do to make the ancient dead a fun enemy.
If only you could at least restore those kickass roman era weapons and armor then they would at least have some interesting loot to compensate.

            >unfun enemy
interesting. can you list me some fun enemies in the game? I am genuinely curious on how some enemies are fun to fight while others are bad. for example: I often find gimmicky enemies like ifrit to be unfun and I want to see if others have the same perception.

              Nachos
Barbarians (because I like the music)
Normal undead (minus geists because high risk and requirements for zero reward)

                >I like the music
I did not expect the music to be this good. the music team is insanely good. the desert theme, brigand theme, the barbarian themes are all exceptional and some of the best tracks composed for vidya in the past decade.

                >Normal undead
you don't mind fighting necromancers? I personally hate them because they revive fallen heroes over and over, by the time you finally kill them every piece of enemy armor would be destroyed.

                Anonymous

No, I think they hit the sweet spot between dangerous and an enemy that you have to respect and prepare for while not being overly gimmicky or bullshit. You can deal with them and their undeads in a different ways while also can get some loot from the undeads that make it worth the risk if you get lucky and snipe them early in the battle.
                >by the time you finally kill them every piece of enemy armor would be destroyed.
Yeah it can be annoying especially with the high tier weapons which they might drop on their first death but lose it in the subsequent revivals if you fail dont take them from ground before they revive

    >try doing southern place stuff

    >go up north north
    >giga armored men with huge armor and concussion hammers
    >go hunting for places
    >goblin annoyance or pure orc wall of armor and bullshit weapons (god help you if they hit, god help you if you don't have 2 hammer bros minimum)
    >dare to do a Hag contract
    >6 of the wrinkly saggy breasts auto win charm your entire backline and murder your bros
    >try to defend a mayors son
    >see above but with men murdering an unnarmed kid instead

    >majority of end game shit like undead coming up or whatever are shit, only real good ones are stuff like noble houses or north v south
    >best contracts are just go kill bandits lol because god help you if you fight monsters or hags
    >gacha game stat rolling and hiring and everything else to the point its legit just western medieval gacha
    >arbitrary shit everywhere you're basically just told to figure out
    >somehow fun when you win but boy, when you lose

The game needs a complete rebalance to be good. Its ok at best if you know whats going on but its really just hammering on the "totally realistic medieval like setting merc company" while also lategame letting you not be mercs but basically battlefield gods who can 10v30 an entire noble house army or a full orc warband camp or whatever. Really, the game's jank as frick and balanced terribly.

the chess-piece art style for the characters is just so obnoxious and grating. I can't enjoy it for that reason alone. I wish they had just done pixel characters or something if they didn't have the skills to animate characters properly

I think it's an improvement, but yes, why are they required to be compressed like they were put into a can-crusher? Would making them somewhat to scale be too difficult? are there any graphics overhaul mods?

A lot of it is pure tedium but it's comfy to build up your squad and explore a bit once you get enough funds to allow yourself a breather and venture east into unpopulated areas.

The problem is that there are very few enemies in the medium-diffuculty range so either you're mowing down jabronis or you're running into stuff that can obliterate you.
