Sorry, some of us here on Ganker actually enjoy video games.

Finally started the Breath of Fire series.

Noice. Haven't tried the series before myself, but retro games are comfy on Vita.

I love it. Finished the definitive versions of FFI-VI on it, Digimon World 1, Castlevania, Metroid Zero Mission, DQ1&3. This thing has become a retro emulation treasure trove since I hacked it open and I can't believe how much goddamn quality titles are at my fingertips.
        Love love love this hardware.

I agree, the Vita is a great emulation machine. I like the Deck a lot because it can emulate Wii U, but the thing's pretty chunky. The Vita has that perfect balance of pocket-sized portability with having enough power to emulate most retro stuff. Not to mention its great original library.

          >I'm just a handheld enthusiast, anon.
Are you planning to get the Aya Neo Air(pictured) or Loki?

I'm still debating. Like the pic you posted, the size is waaay better than the Deck, but the pricetag is kind of steep. I would love to have a device that can play GameCube without having to bring a whole backpack or messenger bag, though.

The Aya Air Plus is going to be $300, same with the Loki Mini Pro. They should be able to do Dolphin, Indies, Midrange and some low settings AAA.

I hope this thing will be able to run sekiro and elden ring with at least 30fps at any resolution above 360p. If it can achieve that, it can 100% play all the other weaker shit I'd like to play on a handheld.

The RDNA2 version, as long as you lower the resolution a bit, should be able to run both.

                Anonymous

I firmly believe the intel version will be the better one. Medecino will only have 2c/4t zen3 and 2 RDNA2 cores, so it will perform pretty much like a last gen mobile athlon with vega 3 with slightly better cpu performance.
Meanwhile the 1215u has 2c/4t alder lake, which is a lot faster than zen2 and an additional 4 e-cores for what that's worth. The updated 64EU iris xe also seems to perform about as well as mobile vega 6, which is almost double of what the mendecino will be able to deliver.

Mendocino is going to be "up to" 4C/8T, it's a repurposed Van Gogh with shitty graphics. But yes, it's very possible the Intel version will be better, we'll see.

Hmmm. It's tough man. I recommend downloading three and switching between each to find out which plays what best.

gpSP is my favorite because you can use Adrenaline's sharp bilinear filter which makes GBA games look really solid. Thing is, it absolutely seems to suck the hardest at running things at a stable framerate.
mGBA is probably the best performance wise but it absolutely obliterates the music so I only use that if I don't care about the OST of the game I'm playing.
RetroArch I feel like is the best middle ground, but honestly, I can't remember which core I used. I think it was the gpSP core.

BASED fellow vita chads. I seriously love the Vita so much. It's my favorite handheld console of all time. You can emulate a decent amount of retro stuff + psp, ps1 and it's own library. The size and ergonomics of it are perfect too, not too small and not too big. I love my switch OLED, but my jailbroken Vita gets more playtime outta me these days.

The absolute best way to play gba games on the vita is via retroarch gpsp core. Not only is the gpsp core newer than the psp one, you can underclock the cpu to 222 mhz and still get max speed and save alot of battery time too.

I'm 6ft dumb frick. People only grab grip handles because of r2/l2. You probably have some fat ass fricking hands you fat bastard. The Vita has the perfect ergonomics of any handheld period

No it doesn't. It's literally an oval shaped piece of shit made for children. Calling a device that you have to cradle between your fingers like a baby toy as "perfect ergonomics for a handheld' means you have zero idea what ergonomics actually is or means. Here'd another hint - the fact that by far the most sold third party accessory for the Vita were the grips show that you're objectively wrong, and most people agree with me (otherwise nobody would need to buy them).
Vita is a completely useless piece of shit in 2022, deal with it.

      13mil Wii U sold.
      76mil 3DS sold.
Nintendo handhelds outsell home consoles every generation. This is clearly a handheld with HDMI out.

And 151 million Wii's sold. The Wii U failed for many reasons, mostly marketing. The 3ds deserves its sales though, i miss mine.

I think i remember watching a YouTuber state 80% of Switch owners used it docked, but ofcourse that may be complete nonsense. I'd love to see the data on the Switch userbase.

I think the dock is integral to the Switch which is why the Lite feels redundant. Thats just my opinion though.

      [...]
      [...]
The absolute best way to play gba games on the vita is via retroarch gpsp core. Not only is the gpsp core newer than the psp one, you can underclock the cpu to 222 mhz and still get max speed and save alot of battery time too.

      [...]
Nah, burn in on the Vita is a overexaggerated myth. It prolly happens when you use the shit out of it but its not like it happens easily

I really gotta get CFW on mine! Used to have a great time with SNES/GBA emulators on the PSP. Hoping I never updated the FW too far.

Dear Handheld anons, I have recently left the sweet NEET life behind and joined the work force which has reduced my gaming time severely. This has made me step away from online games and led me back to single players. I have long been aware of handheld emulators but have only recently started researching more about them. I was originally looking into getting something like a rp2+ to play old games with but after seeing how far the handheld emulation scene had evolved and noticing that many new powerful handheld emulators have been announced to launch this year, I decided to wait and buy one later. With that said, what handheld emulators and brands do you recommend I keep an eye on, be it already those who have already launched or have yet to launch? One good thing about working is that it left me with some disposable income so I’m okay with spending around 300-400€ if it means I can get something that is worth it. Any recommendations?

With the deck existing? No. If you want portability and value freedom, get a deck. There's no reason to get a switch this late in the game, especially when its just a port machine now and its exclusives can be emulated day one.

It's weird how handhelds have gotten so huge. The Game Gear was hated because of how big and heavy it was. Even the PHAT PSP was "too big and heavy" so they made it smaller. And now the Dreck and Shitch are even bigger lol. It's almost like they don't make handhelds for portability and playing on the go anymore. I think the GBC and GBASP were the best size wise to carry around.

Black person, the deck is a portable PC, not a baby toy. It already struggles with playing any type of text or inventory heavy game like a lot of classic PC CRPGs or strategy/management games are, to the point Valve includes a disclaimer about using a built in magnifier tool to be able to see shit on the small screen when launching them.
Yeah no shit a gameboy meant to play casual 2 button games can work with a small screen, but thinking a portable PC should have a 3 inch screen just shoes you have zero idea what you're talking about, and should just stick to using toys.

40hz + TDP capping and a couple of in game settings has allowed me to radically boost the battery life. Sniper Elite 4 went from 2h20m to 3h40m, for example. Plus the experience is still good at 40hz. Smooth frame pacing and lower input delay are more important to me than framerate after I've hit a 40hz target.

Yes. The appeal of portability is massive. It's why nintendo's consoles floundered and flopped, barring the wii, until they gave up on them entirely in favor of their handheld line, which always did well purely because they're portable. The deck is a portable pc. It doesn't matter how powerful your desktop is, you're not going to be lugging it around with you in the car or on the pot.

Recently started SMT Soul Hackers on 3DS (red base model) and I'm liking it so far.
Don't have many games on Switch (light blue Lite model) yet but Metroid Dread might be my favorite so far.
Last game I played on Vita (white OLED model, complete with burn-in) was Persona 4 Golden, which they oddly put on sale for $8 early in 2020 with no announcement or news, only for the Steam port to be announced a few weeks after that discount ended. They probably wanted to see how many more Vita sales they could squeeze before exclusively ended and I know they got at least the one from me. Still happy I played it on Vita though since it's comfier. Was going to pick up P3P for it after I finish FES (after I finish 5R which is painfully long) but now that it's been announced for Switch I may wait for that version to conserve precious Vita storage space.

Finished Stick of Truth on my switch today, was kinda fun for what it was as someone not huge on South Park generally. Had a hearty chuckle that the player's only spoken line was at the very end.
Is Fractured But Whole any good?

It's a bit worse than SoT but still funny.

I heard it was kind of a shift to not being quite as funny, but having better gameplay.
Easy as SoT was, it was funny setting things on fire and farting on them for massive damage, so I hope there's fun stuff like that as an option still.
