He's been messing up the door markings on purpose. It's been confirmed for a while.

It also lends credence to the theory that he’s a black slaad, since he’s deliberately trying to screw up a deal made with Modrons. Though I have no idea why the modrons wouldn’t call him out in that case though

The more thinking about his words Xykon has to do, the more the universe gets very slightly more Lawful so they're probably fine with it

Ripping one of that thing's arms off would accomplish the same effect. Five isn't a very orderly number of arms.

Only with a clean removal. Ripping it off imperfectly would lead to a stump, or a fractional number of arms. Fractions are inherently suspicious, neutral at best, but certainly leaning chaotic.

Not to mention, pretty much every single page that MitD has been on since he played Go the paladin, has been about how the Paladin converted MitD to team Good (with his inane metaphor while playing Go) and how it affects MitD's behavior (repeated to the point that it felt tiresome).

So Blackwing is a fricking goner sooner or later, right?

      Anonymous

I sure hope so. I generally liked the trajectory of a lot of the Order's character arcs, but Blackwing literally exists to do stupid quips at V's expense. Not interesting at all and takes up a ton of panel space and air time for pretty much no good reason.

        Anonymous

Sadly Blackwing is the only character that can talk to V on a even footing.

        Anonymous

Blackwing is a form of character growth for V. Remember how she would only remember her familiar when she needed them, & now they are around all the time, because V is making an effort to be more interactive

          Anonymous

I'm aware of what literally gets stated in the strip, thanks. Blackwing becoming a character to show Vaarsivus' growth doesn't stop the bird from basically being a Joss Whedon character, and that's really damning when half the cost is already quiptastic.

            Anonymous

Well you seemed illiterate so I figured I just state the obvious. But I mean, if you were right (you arent) you'd think Blackwing here in this comic would say some little quip while he is tailing the villains, but he doesnt.

Also... this is a comic strip, its supposed to be quippy humor. Its been that way since the very very beginning, so pretending like Blackwing being "sassy" is some new low is moronic.

              Anonymous

I apologize for hitting a nerve by insulting your favorite barely-a-character, anon. I'm aware that the comic has derivative humor, but as I said in my previous posts that you've elected to ignore Black personwing exists for two reasons, to make moronic jokes and constantly harass V. That's just not a good character and it's not an addition to the strip.

Frick I literally saw Oots for the first time in like 2019. I've just reread it for the third time, and wow, it's barely progressed.

It took, what? Like a year and half for Serini to realize she's going to end up helping the Oots anyway?
Rich already reuses and traces stick figure poses for practically every character.

The hand thing was just why he couldn't do anything except post articles for a while in 2012. As he's gotten older he's gotten slower, but even back then he was pretty slow, because of the aforementioned illness. It's also why he'll go radio silent for a while and then just jizz out anywhere from 3 to 10 pages in an almighty burst, then go back to being basically comatose.

From 2004 until about 2009 or 2010 he was putting out an average of 2 comics a week. (They usually come out one per day or every other day at the end of the month for like a week, though). This was how it was when I started reading the comic in 2005. Sometime in early 2010, or late 2009 Rich started to slow way down and announced that it was due to a chronic illness (which he decided to keep private, but it's almost certainly Crohn's from the symptoms he listed). Then in 2012 or 2013 he got into a fistfight with a glass pane and very nearly lost fine motor control of his drawing hand. The comic would have likely ended years ago by now had those two things not happened. But at least it looks like we'll get to see an ending, unlike Erfworld.

Although even if it had continued, I'm sure almost noone was expecting much from where Erfworld was going by the time it stopped. The drop in quality since Book 1 is the biggest in any webcomic I can think of.
Conversely, imo Rich reached his storytelling and humor peak around strip 300, and characterization peak around the desert arc, and has been roughly stable since.

It’s terrible to say, but his step-son(?)’s death was a huge boon for him as the perfect excuse to drop everything and evacuate a comic where he’d completely written himself into a corner, couldn’t keep an artist for more than a few months, constantly changed the rules about how his setting worked, and took ages to churn out irrelevant bullshit (the last ever page was about a guy we’d never heard of lecturing a faction we’d never heard of about magical advertising and branding, a field in which they were the specialists, in a setting that’s supposed to be an elaborate turn-based strategy game about military conquest and mandator), and best of all, he and his forumites seemed incapable of accepting that the designated repulsive villain was the most moral character in the series by virtue of solely fielding highly-capable and versatile elites as opposed to hordes of disposables, and bothering to remember their names.
Sometimes I wonder if he made the incident up to escape

Maybe, just maybe, it would have ended with Charlie and Parson teaming up against Fate and whatever would have replaced Wanda after her croaking. The combined signamancy of Charlie Brown plus Charles Xavier was metaphorically screaming that Charlie wasn't the bad guy.

I think he means in percentages, not overall numbers
if Homestuck was 300 "quality points" at its peak and suddenly dropped to 150 after act 6 happened, that's a difference of 150 points, but only a 50% drop
whereas if Erfworld was 150 qp and dropped to 50 after the first book, that's a 66-67% drop and it feels heavier, even if it's only a 100 point drop

Could it be? Probably. But Rich Burlew is a professionally trained artist, and quite a good one at that. His pride as an artist probably couldn't abide outsourcing stick figures.

The fact that his stick figure comic is pushing his abilities to draw is something of a tragedy.

She wrote this whole short little story about how she and her old tablet were friends and had wonderful adventures, but the old tablet was getting old and slow, and the only way for the happiness to continue was to replace it with a shiny new tablet, which it begged the author to buy.
It was a shamelessly transparent effort to wring money out of people. So of course a bunch of fricking idiots overfunded the request and gave her like twice the money she asked. God, the very thought still makes me angry.

It's more the idea that the cost of production should be taken into account when the artist charges for their product.
It's just with patreon and other donation type shit, artists and creators are becoming more and more embolden to request for MORE money to pay for things that, back in the day, where just included as part of the cost.
On one hand, I get the outrage. Its kinda like the artist is realizing they can take advantage of their fans. On the other, a fool and his money....

The product is a free webcomic, anon. Admittedly a terrible one, but still, it's not like they could PAY people to read it.

If it helps, the comic has two funded kickstarters that I believe have yet to deliver anything, and some other scummy shit like a bonus comic where the hero died until people paid money or something like that, I can't be arsed to waste time researching it.

Great. Now look up the definition of "emotional capital" and then "emotional manipulation" and realize that's what he (the troony) is doing. Goblins used to be good, but now it's shit, but the artist is riding the coattails and getting suckers to pay for his tool, instead of just using the one he already has.

It really wasn't. It showed some promise (and as much as people complain about the terrible art, a lot of webcomics that eventually became good weren't much better when they started), but saying that it was good is a wild exaggeration.

The thing about webcomics is that - and I think most people who read them accept this without really thinking about it - is that since people making them start as rank amateurs, most of them are really quite mediocre if you look at the early strips and even the best ones weren't exactly masterpieces when they got started.

He already gets so much for so little. What else does he do? Does he even do work for WoTC anymore? Maybe moderate his boards? Manage his phyiscal prints? As a human trying to get by, he's pretty much made it. He won't live in a mansion or get his own private chopper to take him places, but barring extreme laziness or saying the N word in front of the media, I don't think he'll ever have to worry about financial security for the rest of his life. To an extent even Hunt has also made it. He's probably living a CWC tier life, but he's also getting a free ride. I'm kinda jelly actually. I wonder if the ship has sailed or any anon in the thread could actually get fat off a a strip every 2 months.

Remember that these are "success" stories. For every popular comic, there is a thousand that failed to become income sources.
And it doesn't just depend on the content being serviceable. Yes, that is the cornerstone, but you need to put in work into marketing and actual monetization. My understanding is that Hunt is pretty... proactive about wringing money out of people. Don't know about Rich, but he has a large following on his forums, a community. Those contracts with Wizards also didn't arrange themselves. Same for shops, PDFs, print editions. Building all this takes years, and there's no guarantee of success.
tl;dr Go for it if you have genuine passion for the subject matter, otherwise you might find it takes more effort than you had initially anticipated.

A campaign setting would be the play. Honestly it would be even better if he starts churning it out now. Maybe start with Azure city and trickle in a few deities, monsters and magic items. Doesn't really matter if he doesn't finish the comic or the episodic campaign setting. In fact it would be even more advantageous since he can hold both hostage for more and more money.

Don't feel bad; I've been reading this comic since 2005.

Incidentally, the Goblins Comic author had recently made a completely despicable post where she was asking for money for a new tablet.

Thunt has always been a shameless moneygrubber, so that doesn't really surprise me.

Alright then what book do I find Protean in, also what book do I find Black Slaad in?

Black slaadi (or void slaadi) is in the Epic Level Handbook, pgs. 217-219
Proteans are homebrews for 5e, though it's unlikely that anon meant this, because they're shapeshifters and MITD kind of stays the same constantly, even if it would be better for him to change form to escape his imprisonment or just for his own entertainment
if anon is talking about the PF protean, though, that would be on PF Chronicles Campaign Setting, pg. 247, but that would be more unlikely given that
      >A. OOTS is almost pure DND and hasn't really had any PF cameos yet and
      >B. the PF protean is a giant flying snake-like monster that, again, can shapeshift that emerged out of the Maelstrom, which OOTS doesn't really have

          Anonymous

ah, then that would be Epic Level Handbook, too
although still unlikely because the hagunemnon can't fricking sit still and is constantly changing form, and the only feature that we can see of the monster (his eyes) is one of the examples used in it's description, constantly adding and removing them so it can see from different angles/different spectrums of light, and he constantly has two

I just had a really interesting thought. We know that the gate isn't in this dungeon complex, and Serini calls it "backstage". So, a backstage is behind the front of the stage... what if the final gate was sealed from the OPPOSITE side of the rift? What if it's lying in the snarl-world, and that's the hook that finally gets the order to go there? This would be such a neat way to tie the riftworld into the plot that I'm almost certain it'll be true

      Anonymous

Modrons are from the elemental plane of law and are intensely axiomatic creatures that monitor most of existence. Redcloak used a spell to summon one and request a contract. It helps to map and systematically search every single tunnel, and as payment it requested that Xykon only speaks sentences that end with an even-lettered word as forcing an incredibly powerful and chaotic being to consider his words and speak carefully will increase the net amount of order in the universe. (This may also be a trap because they know Xykon will break it by accident eventually, but I digress). Xykon was pissy about it and altered the deal to be odd-lettered words, which was accepted.

Now, everything he says has to end in a word with an odd number of letters or the contract is void, but Redcloak skipped the terms and conditions without reading them so no one knows exactly what that would entail.

That's actually a good point. Normally I would say they have some more complex machinations planned, but the IFCC did openly say they regret Hel having failed. Maybe some specific detail about the fight meant Durkula's victory would not have fit their needs? Or maybe they need the two remaining soul abductions to serve some specific purpose in whatever their endgame is.

This may vary from country to country, but as a rule libraries will happily borrow from other libraries if you're looking for something that's not in their own collection. You'd be surprised what they can dig up for you if you just ask.

Worth reading, the primary complaint is the glacial update schedule. Very short version is the cleric got turned into a vampire because a god of death wants to end the universe and use all the souls to become stronger in the next universe the gods make. Xykon doesn't realize the gods are going to end the world if he fricks with the gate too much. Lots of intricate traps have been laid but we haven't really seen a payoff for the setup yet.

Durkon did, in fact have a happy "ending". In the sense that he returned to his homeland and people there like and respect him, once the whole vampire business got resolved. The comic, and Durkon's adventure continue, of course.
