The characters were uninteresting and the player didn't have much agency besides killing. It's a bad RPG.

Why did Oblivion feel twice the size of Skyrim despite only being slightly larger? Oblivion is one of the only games that got the sense of scale correct, Skyrim felt like a walk backwards despite the focus on verticality.

Half of the Oblivion map is hard to climb mountains with no points of interest.

      Anonymous

This is simply wrong. Maybe it's because you were younger when you played. Skyrim is much better about using terrain to make travel longer and block vision. You can basically walk in a straight line anywhere in Oblivion, and see the Imperial City from half the map.

        >Skyrim is much better about using terrain to make travel longer
which is why travel SUCKS in skyrim

        >and block vision
which is why vistas SUCK in skyrim.
        these are bad things.

        >You can basically walk in a straight line anywhere in Oblivion
which means you'll rarely walk the exact same path twice. that's a good thing.

        >see the Imperial City from half the map
so you can use it to orient yourself when you're in a new place, and the CENTRAL, IMPORTANT nature of the city is constantly reinforced.

Being able to hit Q and let go is not good traversal. Skyrim got closer to Morrowind's landscaping style, only without the snail movement speed.

Oblivion had a shitton of soul and fuck all else. The atmosphere is unmatched. The music and the world fit each other perfect.

Oblivion is literally the greatest game in existence.
Morrowind is a better RPG, Skyrim is better casual garbage, but the sum of its parts makes it the king that will never be beaten.

Skyrim feels smaller in scope to Oblivion. Yes the biome's are more varied but walking from Whiterun to Solitude is like 5-10 minutes max on horse. I'm pretty sure the reason that Bethesda removed Athletics and Acrobatics from Skyrim is because it would've made the world feel even smaller than it already is.

how many mods does this game need to be playable

      Anonymous

the unofficial patches for base game + expansions is all you need. there are some engine fix mods but you dont need them unless you start downloading graphics or serious gameplay mods

honestly Oblivion is pure soul just the way it is

      Anonymous

The most important thing after the patches is fixing the leveling and removing level scaling. Other than that any mods are optional.
