    Money laundering

At this point, I don't even know if that's true. The man needs someone with a whip near him to whack him with it to stop constantly adding new features and finally settle on a minimum viable product and just fricking release it.

But as it is, the company needs the money from it's backers on a daily basis or else it'll just collapse entirely...and they STILL have no idea what the frick it is they want to do with this thing.

        Anonymous

I don't know why anyone expected different. Chris Roberts was always doing this feature bloat shit, the only difference is previously he had people over his head who finally got fed up and kicked him off his projects so the games would release in their lifetimes.

          Anonymous

I guess the disappointment comes from knowing that something like Freelancer was good, but absolutely shows the signs of cut or unfinished content in the game. Perhaps Roberts just needs to be the idea guy and someone else his tard wrangler to make that into a viable product.

You don't actually know what money laundering means do you?

      Anonymous

I don't think it's that, I think they just accepted the idea that they can keep developing this as a career for 20 years, they reached to a point where going even further into the future makes more sense instead of just releasing it.
      >well we already spent 10 fricking years, if we release it now it would all be a waste, we need another decade at this point to REALLY make it something special

imagine all the assets that they worked on and got re-worked, all the time wasted, i think everything they've done in the first 4 years is already re-worked, which cancels out all the work. they can keep doing this til infinity at this point.

why release it ? it doesn't make any sense at this point, they will just continue developing it and the money they get from selling ships and stuff is just like selling the game itself. they can keep doing this forever with no end in sight.

ultimately they can also just fake some hacker attack that ruined all their work and they don't have to return any money to investors. these coons basically created a cozy career for many of them with a constant stream of revenue, disregarding the quality of the game, or the entire game.

        >fake some hacker attack that ruined all their work
Or they can just announce that they need to switch engines / upgrade engines due to "new technological standards" and therefore ask their whales to start donating again.

I used to handwave this but $700m is way too much fricking money even for a bunch of sheltered neckbeards.
It has fewer players online at any given time than shit like OSRS or Helldivers. There's no way every single person who just passes through on a free fly event is spending $1k+ on ships and that's the only way the fundraising numbers make sense.

I disagree and agree at the same time. If you've ever played X3 or X4, you know the joys of space, but also as you say empty and devoid of anything. It takes literal minutes of waiting - that could potentially result in ambushes any second - so you'll have to sit and endure WAITING.
Space games are just waiting simulators. Unfortunately

      >space is honestly lame as frick
It's a shame, you've had the explorer gene bred out of your bloodline and are too lost to even realize how stunted you've become. Space is the Final Frontier, a vast, seemingly never-ending expanse full of exploration and wonder. To not even feel a twinge of an urge to set off in search of new discoveries and adventure is indicative of many character flaws and poor life choices

tl:dr - you're pathetic, stay in the kiddie pool while us real humans forge a new path for the rest of humanity

We already have rover images of mars and it's pretty much the same thing over and over.

You're never getting to a planet with actual variety in the ecosystem like an Earth 2.0 because we would need to be moving faster than the speed of light for thousands of years.

Quite literally every known planet except Earth is completely barren, there is nothing to explore. Even if we assume something like Mars could be terraformed at some point, it would still be bootleg Earth at best, we just have to accept that we hit the peak with our planet and there won't be anything like that ever again.

You'd think a space game would be about going to different planets, boarding other ships. No, it's floating through empty space going pew pew at 4 pixels millions of miles away

      Anonymous

Reminder to all the space explorationcels out there: faster than light travel is totally impossible. It's physically, biologically, and even philosophically impossible because to travel at the speed of light, it would mean you could see/experience things before they happen, aka time travel. And even if you somehow could do FTL travel in some hypothetical futuristic spaceship, I've got some bad news for you: 95% of the observable universe has already dirfited out of reach for us, forever. Our descendants will never be able to explore these expansive galaxies, alien worlds, and imposing star systems that you're dreaming of. That's because the one thing in the universe that does move faster than light is the expansion of the universe itself. And worse yet: we are currently in the tail end of the era of star formation. While the universe itself is relatively young, only a few billion years old, it's final age will be in the trillions and trillions and trillions of years. Every year, a grand total of 3 new stars are formed. Future life forms will look at the star that their planet revolves around and they'll think it's the only thing that has ever existed. They'll be totally ignorant of the cosmos, other stars, galaxys, planets, and the big bang because their satellites will see nothing but an empty void, because literally everything else will have drifted out of reach entirely.

And when the final star collapses, the universe will consist of nothing but swirling blackholes, for trillions and trillions of years, and nothing else. And when they too, finally collapse, in time frames too large for our minds to conceptualize, entropy will set in, the universe will stop expanding, and nothing, and I do mean nothing, will ever happen again. Time and space will lose all meaning.

      That's how this all ends.

        >faster than light travel is totally impossible.

when the servers are fricking working, sc makes e:d look terrible.
some ships in sc are bad in atmo (especially if you don't remember your VTOL hotkey), others are fine, you can really feel it with the current flight model.
in e:d you spend fricking hours looking up your guides and third party tools to find some weird obscure combination of things like civil war agricultural tier banana outpost, then fricking hours warping and scooping, to do a few minutes of shitty ground combat. in sc, i will either do a dozen missions in that time frame, or some bug will blow me up randomly, or make the quest NPCs not appear, and I will ragequit.
The games just aren't similar. One is a warping simulator, the other is a grindfest where you Do The Meta Thing to afford a big ship you can jack off to.

I backed in 2014. Spend about USD 300 in total. Back then, it was my dream game. After not playing for at least 4 years, I tried it out yesterday. Presentation is good, lots to do, the game looks amazing. But nothing works the way it should. None of them systems have been improved compared to 4 years ago, with the exception of the UI. No new systems - which are required for the game to come even close to what it should be - have been implemented in those 4 years. I can’t believe how bad things are and how this company received so much funding.

    I have two questions:
    1. Would it be already finished if they didn't use CryEngine
    2. I suppose they remade a lot of things in the engine while developing SC, so why aren't they selling it to other devs?

      1. they don't
      2. they started with lumberyard, which was based on old cryengine version, which was forked eventually, long story short, they have some sort of lumberyard fork cobbled up with duct tape and spit to hold it together. just look how much time they needed to start implementing vulkan rendering.

Star Citizen is victim of its own hype from its own lies. They can never ever release Star Citizen.
Can you even imagine the absolute community blowout and moronic lawsuits that will follow this game when it releases in a state that is anything less than 10/10 game of all time perfect? $700 mil is insane, it actually puts SC in the second most expensive video game to produce of all time. It is more expensive than any movie EVER MADE. Actually let that sink in for a second - an alpha of a game that has been in development for over 10 years now is the second most expensive piece of consumer entertainment ever made in the history of mankind.
Star Citizen fans can't defend this, even when they claim "da tech!!!" because other games, movies and entertainment pieces had achievements and progress that came from their work, it just took a fraction of the budget. And they actually existed in a final form.
Star Citizen is a scam by definition, because the goal of the product is to not release. And just remember, for every day that passes, a citizengay will seethe at the fact that the above statement is, as it stands, factually correct.

money can’t actually create anything. you need knowledge, time, and effort. money just convinces humans to expend these resources on behalf of the financier.
    key word: convince.
it becomes more difficult to convince a man to exchange his invaluables for money when he is already flush.
without that incentive nothings gets done because nothing a human hates more than completing a task aside from the fear that leaving the task incomplete will affect their livelihood.

          assuming it'll ever be finished.
release will be very uneventful, they'll just slap release tag on one of their development branches and call it a day.
to be honest they should have released it like 10 years ago in a minimal playable state and then build upon that.
but lets be honest for a moment, creating a finished product and releasing never was the point of this. at this point it's an elaborate ponzi scheme.

I won't lie, the most amusing part of Scam Citizen discussion online is how fans and defenders of this project will always claims that game is indeed very close to release, that it can spend all the time needed in development to be perfect and how we are all missing the best game ever created. Some claims that even now they can play all they want and how game even in current state is wonderful and absolutely stunning.

It's because they thought they could 'make' their 'own engine'.

Thinking that they are smarter than the 1000+ 20year experience neckbeards that worked on Unreal Engine.

And what does Star Citizen have to show for it? A trash game engine that struggles to render empty worlds. (no npcs, no 'life' no vegetation, no trees, no _water_, literally empty barren worlds worse than Starfail.)

And an 'instanced' world with 50 players MAX per 'instance'. - Yes, Star Citizen is limited to 50 players per instance/area.

    What an embarrassment.

They could use the assets they already have, and hire actual programmers, and use the Unreal 5 engine, and the game would be complete in 1 year max, it would look 10x better and run 10x better, more features, better graphics technology. (You think Star Citizen will have dlss ect? LOL, they are 10 years behind in tech.)

There's never going to be a "release date", except for Squadron 42, the single player game, which is likely due out sometime this year.

    Star Citizen is "out" now.
It's still Alpha, but they're adding new features at a faster and faster rate now, server meshing is a thing, performance issues are mostly gone, and the next new star system will be out with the next big patch.

All the underlying tech to build out content for the game is already in place, so it won't be long until it'll be a pretty much "complete" experience in terms of gameplay.

I know it sounds like cope but it really do seem pretty close. I mean they tested server meshing with hundreds of people and it worked. It isnt some meme. I think these two years will be huge for star citizen because so much shit is tied to server performance and when servers are always at 5 FPS, its gonna be shit. They fix that, a lot of the games problems will be solved.
