Overwatch was a big hit when it first released, and a lot of fun. Steadily it became less popular and less fun, and now Overwatch 2 is generally regarded as a failure.
What went wrong, and could it still be fixed?

no it isn't. million of people enjoy playing it and it makes millions of money to the makers of the game.
it's not failure on either side
>million of people enjoy playing it
In 2016, sure. Overwatch 2 in 2023 doesn't even have half a million, let alone plural millions.
>million of people enjoy playing it
Millions of people play it but don't enjoy it
join the 9%
Shut the fuck up Geoff
>millions of money to the makers of the game.
helo sirs
put the bottle away, rakesh
Quick, they need you again in the diablo IV defence thread.
Overwatch 2 is precisely what went wrong. All they had to do was keep the same game running. Hispanice it up with events now and then. They had a successful model, but Activision's greed needed profits hand over fist.
And then when they realized they had slaughtered the goose and there were going to be no more golden eggs, they sold the entire company to Microsoft and ran.
>What went wrong
Trannies and HR departments.
>could it still be fixed?
LOL
>What went wrong
A very strange sequence of decisions from, presumably, the product team and higher-ups
>could it still be fixed
No.
>what went wrong
>cease active development for three years on your game to drum hype for sequel
>sequel ends up half-baked and shit
This
>here's a new game from Blizzard
>sells a shitload
>oh yeah by the way the actual game isn't really good
thank you gnomish media for a hot take years after blizzard already made their money, you’re as useful as disney critics!
>Release your own version of Team Fortress 2
>Everyone is having fun
>Decide to make it competitive for some fucking reason
>Everyone is no longer having fun
What a shock!
I love Mei

Good.
I don't know, I played it with friends for like 300h when it came out and I greatly enjoyed it back then. Eventually my friends stopped playing and I stopped as well since I don't really bother with MP games if I'm not playing with people I actually know. We played a few matches here and then after that as well, but we were all really done with it.
If they had added some sort of serious co-op content with meat on its bones we might've come back to try it out, but as it stands it's like I said, I'm just done with the game. I got my fun out of it years ago and I've moved on.
The battle pass model sucks and the pve removal is what went wrong. Everything else is fine imo, the pvp is still fun. Although I don't like playing tank anymore, with the removal of off-tanks the role is just too stressful now.
Tanking can't really exist in an fps where you don't have threat mechanics forcing an AI to target someone.
I know what you mean but I still don’t understand. Tanks are glorified DPS in this game. The problem has always been that you can swap out characters to hard counter someone in Overwatch which isn’t just considered fair, it’s expected.
>it's a failure because I don't like it
the game is well and alive. I understand that competitive gaming can be overwhelming for a moron like you, maybe play a gatcha instead
It's a failure because it couldn't deliver the one thing that justified its creation, while mangling what made it fun in the first place
All they had to do was add more heroes and maps to keep it fresh but nooooo
>muh e"sports"
>muh super serious gamers
No the problem was that they tried to make a PVE mode for casuals which ballooned out of control and they eventually stopped it. Switching to 5v5 was the esports thing but it’s not a big deal.
Zarya is best girl
>girl
anon, i got bad news for you
epic own, brothers, btw yall seen the new futa Pharah that dropped?
I don't watch anime
Zarya is a literal canon man
only hope is microsoft, and microsoft don't have the best track record of "fixing" things. ie. minecraft
> What went wrong
It was a blizzard game, it never really stood a chance
>could it still be fixed?
Remove battle pass, bring back 6v6, remove role queue, make tanks and healers actually fun to play so that people don’t need role queue, make pve, and maybe despite not bringing back overwatch to its former glory it can at least be good for the people still playing
What’s wrong with role queue?
>game releases and it's fun
>game goes balls deep on esport cancer
>game starts getting rebalances to accommodate top 1%
>99% playerbase confused because their favorite fun hero got nerfed
>quit the game
So the usual MMO cycle?
>comp TF2 is dead and nobody gives a fuck
>casual TF2 is alive and everyone is having fun
Make OW3 12v12 with bigger maps and focus on casual.
Blizzard couldn't have missed the mark more if they tried.
Nobody watched competitive OW (Viewers where embeds)
Casuals don't like ranked OW (esports is dead)
esports was a mistake
>What went wrong, and could it still be fixed?
The newer characters are shite, it cannot be fixed because it's ideological. You'd have to fire a fuckton of developers and suits.
If you're a developer reading this, don't hire pronouns in bio creatures or women or you will end up like this or worse.
This idpol whining is always missing the forest for the trees
>Overwatch was a big hit when it first released,
It never was, the porn however was a success. Millions upon millions of people both male and female pay billions in cash to artists to make blender porn out of them. That alone could make Blizzard the richest adult company ever. We are talking about profits similar to large movies blockbusters.
>It never was
literally spawned like dozen hero shooter copycats. it was the biggest casual shit until fortnite took the discarded casual playerbase.
Every balancing decision is made first and foremost thinking of professional level play, which means the game is designed around ~100 players, while the game everyone else is playing is ignored. So things like Pharmercy, which are ineffective in pro play, get ignored even though they're so dominant as to ruin most games they appear in below the gold level, which is where the majority of players live.
After a few games where you're just suppressed the whole time, can't really do anything, everybody is mad at everybody, eventually you realize you aren't having fun and you just stop playing. So Overwatch goes from 15M players a month to less than 1M.
Bro Pharah was nerfed hard years ago. That's why I stopped using her.
I am convinced the exact turning point in which everything started going south was when they introduced Ana.
She really is a shit character
I think you mean Brigitte, she legit broke the game meta for a while. I don't think there's been a more overpowered character added since.
While Brigitte was also absurdly designed and game-warping when introduced, Ana came first and in my opinion had a worse and deeper impact on the core gameplay.
She wasn't broken, she was new. Every new character is "broken" because people don't know how to play it or play against it yet, compared to something like Tracer which has been around forever.
Blizzards mistake is listening to that shit and not just letting it calm down.
I dont think you remember how busted her CC shield bash was.
None of the post launch characters made the game better. Also the removal of hero stacking turned the game from funny winston stacks to full sweaty all day everyday. The fags crying about cheese stacks ruined overwatch.
>the game is well and alive
this is a healthy video game from what used to be the #1 best selling video game company in 2002
overwatch is the first genuine instance of
>buy game
>money stolen
I paid like 50 bucks for this shit in 2016, and now it's forever gone.
There should be servers you can join to play with your bros where it autobalances teams and basically is exactly like TF2.
Overwatch 2 should have just been a completely different ero game, everyone knows the hentai world has done far more good for humanity with Overwatch IP than the Blizz.
Rather than try to fix a stable game they consistently added shit that broke it more and more.
Gameplay wise? Support creep.
Best abilities in the game
>Nade
>Rez
>Cleanse
>Discord
>Immortality
Best ults in the game
>Tranq
>Beat
>Rally
>Rush
They all also have self sustain, low cooldown movement abilities and most can duel with dps no problems.
Now since they can do all that and still pump out 8k-10k in heals to a single tank, the tank doesn’t die. So 3/5 players on the team aren’t dying so unless you have a one/two tap character you get these long boring drawn out fights which goes against what OW2 was supposed to be
Battle Pass made the game a chore.
Feels like I get the same maps over and over cause they keep locking half of them.
New characters are morons and gays.
Support is fucked up for so many reasons.
Their healing output is TOO good.
Healing is boring, so people just focus on damage and ignore the healing.
IMO, healers should have combat gameplay with passive methods of healing so you literally can't neglect it, but severly dialed down so you can still deal damage faster than the recovery rate. Basically a toned down Brig.
>IMO, healers should have combat gameplay with passive methods of healing so you literally can't neglect it
Lucio is the gold standard for a support character in an fps.
>mercy is shit because you just stand there sucking off your tank
>ana just shoot her teammates
>moira just holds right click, then left click.
>brig just w+m1
Lucio is the only one actually playing.
Dirty Bomb had the best take on healers. You're just a guy with a slightly worse gun who heals and revives team mates once the fight is over.
Dirty bomb was hero shooter but good. Every character had a regular gun and played like a fps should. Its so sad that overmeme was more popular.
Blizzard
Nothing
>One single weapon skin to unlock
>It requires competitive play with a player base of retards
I'm not a cosmetics goon but the gold skin was the only sort of progression the game offered, and forcing it into competitive play was a bad move. Should've just locked it behind a challenge or score system.
>Should've just locked it behind a challenge or score system.
It was. The challenge of interacting with other human beings, you loser.
>Overwatch was a big hit when it first released
lol
>and a lot of fun
lmao
Blizzard has done nothing but ruin their own IPs chasing after the fabled esports scene since they stuck PvP Arenas in WoW. They've done nothing but fuck up time and time again because of their unending butthurt over Starcraft and DotA.
focus on e-sports and not on making a fun game
brainlet investors don't understand that riot's success with e-sports was a freak occurence and not something that can be reproduced.
Overwatch 2 is right where it belongs. Regarded as a meme that only redditors play.
How long do you think it will take Blizzard until they fuck up Odyssey?
>Kaplan shits all over his company's legacy and games then just leaves
damn that's based
Heh
NOW BLIZZARD WILL VOMIT DOWN YOUR THROAT. COME CLOSER
I'll never forgive overwatch for killing Battleborn. At least Paladins is still good.
Killing stillborn was the only good thing overwatch did. Get fucked randy lol
>battleborn
>not killing itself
This is now a Mei sexo thread
In contribute
The steve guy was forced out for not being woke. No more regular update videos from the lead guy who was very into the game and actually cared about fan and player feedback to make a better game.
>overwatch 2
>2
>it's the same fucking game but you have to buy your skins again
Usually people are used to Blizzards greed but I guess it was just too obvious this time.
Not that the higher ups care. They probably made their money.
My bet is they release overwatch: genesis or whatever next when OW2 one is completely dead but then it's mobile only and nothing but gatcha mechanics.
Think of Nikke but with the OW bitches.
You get them all back if you use your old account. This was a case of mismanagement and over ambitious devs rather than greed. The game was made free to play rather than buy to play because the devs fucked up with their PVE. That same fuck up is why we have battle pass because they need to make money somehow.
Fixing it would involve making actual content and backtracking of their horrendous F2P business model, two things nu-Blizz are incapable and unwilling to do.
If it's making money nothing went wrong.
Ya know what I genuinely don't know why I actually ever bought stocks in blizzard outside of a fucking joke when they were low. This isn't a larp either I thought I could kill overwatch 1 by being a shares holder
I'm pretty sure they really pissed off their remaining playerbase when they promised a FREE update to patch in a single player campaign, but instead decided they're gonna break it up in to $40 mission packs.
also they destroyed the game by trying to pander to Esports audience. Professional esports is run by gay autists, just look at FGC or EVO. Overwatch 1 sold itself on HOT CHICKS which was why the original marketing had a shitload of porn of all the hot chicks which Blizzard totally didn't commission the making of 🙂
qrd? Is that why it’s called overlook or are you still memeing?
>what went wrong
lets see
>released the exact same game
>shoveled more wokeshit in there to further alienate actual gamers
>deliver on precisely 0 (zero) promises
>released Warcraft: Refunded in the meantime
>stolen titty milk and cosby suites in the meantime
blizztard are a fucking joke, and im loving watching this dumpster fire, they deserve nothing less
Even if they had only made the best possible choices every time since launch, there's just not enough open lanes within video games to support 80% of big mainstream games to be some never ending live service thing. What went wrong with Overwatch? Who fucking knows--I played it off and on for like five years and I don't wanna fucking play it anymore. Who the fuck wants to play the same game forever?
SHES FAT
>What went wrong
They made it free and attached a F2P premium pass model on it, and it being 5v5 with tanks becoming brawlers was a bad idea
>and could it still be fixed?
Yes. Make it a pay-to-play game again (OW1 owners get it for free), reinstate lootboxes gained through gameplay, and have all characters available.
Make it 6v6 again but keep tanks as brawlers.
>shooter
> no community servers
Thats it, this is what matters by far the most.
Player's should have the power to play the game how we want, not living under wallstreet's shitty tyranny.
the overwatch team had absolutely no idea how to handle the game after the first year
instead of making new content to keep the game fresh like league does they were spending most of their development struggling to balance characters
not allowing to use the same character more than once on the team is fine, but every other decision they made was a mess and the game got stale
the final nail in the coffin was forcing 2 tanks 2 dps 2 supports, no one wants to play support or tank because it's incredibly boring, like with reinhardt and mercy the optimal thing to do most of the time is holding right or left click around your team and waiting for them to do something
the worst part of all is that at least half of the heroes are categorized as dps, so if you wanted to play half of the cast you were forced to sit on long queues, I literally found matches faster in league's ranked than OW's "quickplay"
by the time OW2 came out everyone already gave up with the game, and they just made it EVEN WORSE with a monetization system that is so shitty that people want lootboxes back
>What went wrong
OWL and the forced parity between OWL and Live.
It's really that simple.
>1 hero limit is a direct result of OWL
>role lock / 2-2-2 is a direct result of OWL
>most balance changes were a result of OWL
>5v5 is a direct result of OWL
Couple other things I'm blanking on.
But it all comes back to Blizzard wanting OWL and live servers to be identical.
There's also the whole "working on PVE for 3 years and then cancelling it completely" thing, but that's way after the fact, the damage was already done.
Hot take, but if they really want to fix the game they should just drop the healer class. Rework the support characters into dps and make it a 2 tank, 3 dps team game. Give all characters ways to self heal, like a passive perk such %heal off kills.
>What went wrong
Diversity™
They recycled the same events over and over, Lucio Ball and Junkenstein were fun for like a week and yet they kept coming back with minimal changes.
>game dying due to sterilized unfun metas, low content updates, recycled events, poor design
>covid hits
>cease all content updates for 3 years
>hype PVE and a sequel
>game finally releases, PVE is a recycled 2019 demo and paid. Future releases are to be dripfed in annual installments
>clear attempt to copy the Fortnite battlepass/skin system but the prices are extortionary, OW1 skins that were once free are now 30usd each, the battlepass is primarily trash filler, + legacy players deincentivized from spending any money
>takes them almost a year to add credits to the battlepass, but not the premium credits people were asking for, "legacy credits," exclusively intended for the purchase of OW1 skins most players own already
>heroes are locked behind grind and pricewalls for new players, unironically
>immediately fall back into the same pattern of low content updates, recycled events, and poor design
>new heroes are ugly and uninspired, nobody cares for any of them
>still dumping precious resources into the OWL, literally the most boring e-sports league on the planet. The game is so sterile every game is a mirror match, the meta is decided within seconds of a new patch drop, and the scene is 100% corporate/there is 0 community involvement, every player is a lookalike bowlcut from Korea unironically
>hype a gay pride event, the entire thing is nothing but a few texture swaps on 1-2 maps + a few sprays. Those who cared disappointed AND this produces yet another controversy because Blizzard is forced to censor the pride content for specific countries, widely mocked for hypocrisy/chudiness by both sides
>prices remain high
>literally nothing to look forward to
>even the exp quests are insufferable, players required to grind through hundreds of games per week on top of the game not being fun to begin with
>enforced false positivity, ban/filter system so oppressive most matches are completely silent
>game is dying again
TLDR: OW2 is a disaster
>What went wrong
They removed a lot of features, then monetized the free (or potentially free) stuff.
They also sold the game based no upcoming PvE and then cancelled PvE.
>could it still be fixed?
Sure, but not by Activision.
Mei sex
The idea is fine, Valve is doing the same with CSGO -> CS2.
