Panzer Dragoon series

A good rail shooter, a GREAT rail shooter, a great RPG, and a ? rail shooter*. This is a good series all around. I'm finally playing through Saga for the first time and loving it (on mednafen). Which game is your favorite?

*and a shitty game gear shooter

Played them recently because of the hype and they are just ugly and boring

Didn't the remake get like 60% and was ignored by everyone? Just feels like one of these series Sega paid reviewers for to have a system seller and people willingly fell for it

Reviews? The remake sucked and launched with loads of features missing and was buggy as frick. It doesn't even play as well as the 20fps game it was based on. I have little expectation and hope for the Zwei remake if it comes out. It's a shame cuz zwei is arguably the best game of the trilogy.

Not a great comparison. Remake looks terrible. But yes they are overrated.

There are like 6 rail shooters of note and a good case can be made that one, or two, of the PD games are in those slots.

All of the games in the series felt lacking.

The greatness was there, but they all feel half-finished at best.

dont base your perspective off a shitty eurojankk "remake" that strips the soul out of the games

They really were, its a shame sega has seriously pivoted away from smaller development teams and more towards outsourcing their ips. At least its better than the late 2000s were they only had 3 or so dev only doing Yakuza, Sonic, and other smaller projects.

Has anyone here emulated Orta? Can you recommend an Xbox emulator with which to do so?

I wish it would just be put on Windows Store. It's been almost twenty years.

Is there a good Xbox emulator? The game sounds so good....

It’s a great series. The original is just an old school arcade rail shooter done excellently. The graphics look good for the release too. Remember it released closer to Starfox 1 than Starfox 64.

Zwei improved on the original in almost every way. Saving, multiple routes, deeper scoring, better graphics, Pandra’s box and higher difficulty all made this a huge step up. Music is the only thing that might be better in the original.

My biggest and really only problem with the first two games is their short length. But if thats the worst thing about a game its probably pretty good. Many of the best saturn games were short.

Saga is a great, unconventional RPG with an excellent unique battle system and interesting story. Flying around exploring and trying to solve puzzles and win battles is so much fun.

Orta may be mechanically and gameplay wise the best in the series. Its finally long enough and had enough depth. The story is batshit insane but I just ignore it. Great bosses and more strategy in the gameplay. Plenty of extra features.

Xbox emulation isn't there yet but it's been getting close

both cxbx reloaded and xemu have made good strides

zwei is better than orta tho

I'll look into both of these, hopefully one of them can run the game adequately. Thanks.

Even if zwei is better I'm still jonesing for a pd game I haven't played.

One of my favorite game series of all time. Definitely Segas hidden masterpiece series. I definitely think the original game has the best music since Azuma composed it and he also released like a remixed version which can be found on YouTube, but all the console games are amazing top tier games for what they're trying to be. Orta is definitely the best Xbox exclusive, or at least my favorite, but I can't decide on which game is the best in the series. They all have top tier art direction and sound design. I'm probably the only 22 year old Zoomer that knows about these obscure games. It's sad to know this series died on the last good Xbox. The original Xbox had some amazing exclusives with an overall amazing green otherworldly aesthetic

replaying zwei right now, I had forgotten how fun this game was. PD1 is way fresher in my mind but Zwei really blows it out of the water. There's just way more to shoot, way more interesting enemies, and every boss has a pretty wild and fun gimmick to them. I only made it to the ice level, which was where I'd usually die bitd. Maybe a "1cc" isn't so far-fetched now that I am older.

I was mostly unimpressed with the rail shooters, but it's Panzer Dragoon Saga that I still need to play. Ran out of storage space and it takes multiple discs so I'll have to clear out some other games first. Orta actually looks kind of fun too.

Saga is a near prefect game, and easily in my top 10. My only gripes are that it's too short (~15 hours even if you 100% it), and not all that well balanced. I guess on my first playthrough it was reasonably challenging, but only because I didn't know the "trick" for each enemy. Once you do, the game is laughably easy. There's not one, but TWO sub-bosses near the end of the game that can be defeated without them even having a chance to attack you.

The first game is stylistically cool, but very unremarkable in terms of gameplay. Zwei was a massive improvement and I enjoyed it a lot. It even has replay value due to the multiple routes in its levels, whereas Panzer Dragoon did not.
