The best "Resident Evil clone" IMO. I actually like it more than the first game gameplay wise.

pe1 is straight up better
Overall better, but the combat sucks.
games are more than their gameplay
I can't wait to get rich so I can play all the PS1/2 games.
You can emulate them all right now
Yeah, but I have to go to work.
rich? you can buy the games for cheap
Literally just download them buddy, just pirate them for free right now
This. If you're worried about 'muh accuracy' burn them to a disc and put them in a cheap PS2 off ebay
Gameplay > Everything else
Do you think about the gameplay after you finish a game? Do you consider it? It's only fun in the moment. Obviously, good gameplay is preferable, but it's not something that is going to stick with you. The gameplay only matters when I'm playing the game. Do you replay things a lot? Do you recall how they play? Or when you think about games, do you remember other things, such as writing, atmosphere, and music?
Bad gameplay with random encounters and poor balancing detracts from those other things
If you only care about the writing, atmosphere, and music then why even bother playing the game? It would be more convenient just watching it on Youtube(or watching a movie that does all of these things better)
I never said I only care about those things and don't appreciate you putting words in my mouth. I do care about gameplay. However, a game is not gameplay alone but is the sum of its parts. Ignoring the other parts, especially when they are the ones that generally give lasting impressions, is foolish at best.
One of those parts is noticeably improved in the sequel and the rest is about the same or maybe slightly worse
Muh atmosphere and music aren't enough to make a game good when the core gameplay is subpar
>Do you think about the gameplay after you finish a game? Do you consider it?
Yes you moron.
What else is there to think about after the game is over?
I think about Xenogears' kino lore and storying. The gameplay is just there to involve the player so it's not just another visual novel.
>games are more than their gameplay
this homie did not just say that
yes he did, ACgay
gameplay>everything else is just a plus
Bro
nah. pretty much everything in the first game is worse except for the main villain.
>muh atmosphere
PE2 is a straight upgrade as an actual game
The soundtrack sucks compared to the original and you know it. Everyone here knows that the soundtrack in the first one made that game.
The operatic singing was cool
PE2 is still a much better game
PE2 is a better game and better combat system. PE1 is a better lore and environment.
Honestly, if PE1 had PE2's real-time casting combat system, it'd be no contest.
>PE2 is a better game and better combat system. PE1 is a better lore and environment.
pretty much this. also don't forget to read the original novel
I'll give PE1 lore, but I strongly prefer the enviroments in PE2.
But PE1 is basically the video game version of "Giant creature attacks New York City"
I agree.
PE2 is a RE clone while PE is its own game.
PE has
>way better music
>better art (they seriously butchered Aya's model in 2)
>better gameplay that's more suited to the situation
You know how tank controls are usually justified by the horror theme and it being awkward goes well with a sense of vulnerability?
In PE2 you're the goddamn hunter. You're a godlike being capable of magic bullshit and you're here to fricking clean up. It does not make sense.
>a better story
>actual characters
3rd is... fine. The story is total bullshit but the game itself is okay for a psp title and the soundtrack is top-tier.
I try to play it for an hour or two and end up dropping it. Can't get into it and I thought the first was fine.
It's one of the five or so actually good PS1 games
>beat this boss a little too late
>get locked into the bad ending for the rest of the game
Frick you, Squaresoft. How was I supposed to fricking know that I'd be facing a boss all of a sudden?
Wasn't it made by a bunch of RE1 and 2 people who left Capcom?
Pretty much, and Aya/Eve reminded me of Claire/Sherry.
I love Aya...
Me too
You could just say "I love Blonde Anime Woman" because they all look the same.
My first and only game crush. We need to bring back the look too.
Yeah.
She looks like Cloud, only trooned out.
Weird timing OP. I was just replaying the series.
Parasite eve 1 had jank writing, pretty bad gameplay, and the need to constantly hold the run button to run was stupid. Also, locking the true ending through a masochistic bonus dungeon was moronic. Thank fricking God for YouTube.
PE2 is from a gameplay perspective a much better game. I didn't find PE1 scary at all, and I can say the sequel never scared me either. The dialogue was translated better In pe2 for sure, but the game is very short. And the setting is boring as frick.
PE3 was just awful. Plot made little to no sense. Setting was stupid. Completely disregarded everything that did work in 1/2 and instead went with a shallow arcade shooter with light RPG elements, the dumbest plot to ever be in a square game, and a moronic ending that ruined the already minimal chance of ever getting a sequel.
If I had to rate the series as a whole I'd give it a solid 6-7/10.
>And the setting is boring as frick
Really I liked the abandoned desert town it reminded me a lot of Tremors, and the ARK was more interesting than your average RE lab
I can respect that, and I definitely see your point about a tremors like setting. I guess I was personally hoping to explore L.A. with PE monsters.
The opening of the game took place in the big ass building in the city, right?
I'm sure it was due to budget constraints.
The black guy with the big ass fricking revolver who hated the Eve creatures because they ate his family was fricking based.
>And the setting is boring as frick.
The setting was godlike for me.
PE3 lost the rights to the original book and movie so they had to use some garbage story.
Other than that, you're objectively correct.
>PE3 was just awful. Plot made little to no sense. Setting was stupid. Completely disregarded everything that did work in 1/2 and instead went with a shallow arcade shooter with light RPG elements, the dumbest plot to ever be in a square game, and a moronic ending that ruined the already minimal chance of ever getting a sequel.
welcome to games directed by Hajime Tabata
>welcome to games directed by Hajime Tabata
I wonder, does Barry ever defend the 3rd Birthday?
>I wonder, does Barry ever defend the 3rd Birthday?
all that frick does with 3rd Birthday is his usual "IT'S ALL NOMURA'S FAULT!!!!! TABATA WAS JUST THE FALL GUY/SACRIFICAL LAMB. EVERY DECISION WAS NOMURA'S" fake news bullshit
You know what's weird? FF7R had a lot of KH1 and KH2 developers leading the charge on the FF13 developers who did grunt work for them. 7R's staff looked like T3B from a bird's eye viewpoint even if it was Nomura and Hamaguchi directing instead of Tabata.
Tomotaka Shiroichi of the T3B team was even promoted as one of the battle design leads who worked with Kosuke Sakane and Teruki Endo of Capcom (just like Yuichi Kanemori), and for a brief time Mitsunori Takahashi of KH2FM who worked under Kanemori.
WTF
all this shows is that Tabata sucks and SE is better off after firing him
Yes actually.
That's also not counting my original data where I found Luminous Productions actually has less KH1/2 devs than CBU1 and so many went to CBU3.
I guess they knew that LP was shit and bailed to better teams
A few of them are stuck on Forspoken tbh.
>Naoki Kurita
>Taisuke Ooe
>Masashi Takizawa
>Kenichi Shida
I'm AFK so I'll upload the full list of KH1/KH2 devs still at Square when I get back.
I dont know what you are talking about anon, there was no PE3
>and I can say the sequel never scared me either.
The fricking chasers will haunt my nightmares for the rest of my life. Their faces freaked me out, their animations freaked me out, the sounds they made freaked me out, and the fact that they were some of the most annoying enemies in the game that I consistently struggled with when I was younger cemented them in my memories as objects of genuine terror. I dreaded turning every corner for fear one would pop out and ruin my day. I also hated the blood/bone sucklers and the noises they made but you know what REALLY took it over the top for me? The bit in NeoArk where you go by the exhibit for the sucklers and there's that plaque describing them and how "wouldn't it be wonderful to be held forever in your mother's arms?" Knowing that the whole idea behind ANMCs was that they were people being turned into those things made that shit unnerving as frick to me. Just the thought of somebody doing that to you, turning you into that, and then trying to sell it to you that it's better this way because "oh, you're a cute baby now and you can live forever like a cute baby and feel like you did when your mother loved you" shit. Creeped me the frick out.
1 has better music, which makes it superior by default.
I remember doing the target practice for hours as a kid and never 100% the last two challenges
Was I just a moron or was it really difficult to pull off?
It really is difficult. But all you get is just some extra items. I admire your dedication.
>t. got all items including gun range on hardest difficulty.
Third Birthday is the best
low quallity b8
PE2 dissapointed me a lot the first time I played it because of how different it was to the first game but after I simply accepted that it's just Resident Evil with RPG elements I tried it again and enjoyed it a ton. Still like the first one better though, it's like top 5 JRPG of all time for sure.
I like the desert setting too, but at the same time it would have been cool if PE had its own identity as a horror series set in major cities with lots of recognizable landmarks to sort of play off of how Resident Evil focused on horror set in weird secluded places.
PE2 is better than resident evil
>how do i a cool pose
tiny car or big girl?
I remember playing through 1 and 2 a few years back and wondering why the frick people hated 2.
le comfy christmas detective atmosphere
PE1 is a moviegame whose combat boils down to running in circles while you wait for the ATB gauge to refill
Anyone else had a separate save for the shower scene before this fight as a kid?
kek based
I autisically asked this in every PE thread but it seems I'm a rare breed of early coomer
I was stuck with only a nshitty4 as a kid, but I probably would have if I had access to this game.
Nah, I had the Star Wars fighting game and put Leia in the slave costume, turned down the music volume, and beat the frick out of her in practice mode with the Gamorrean pig guard because her hit sfx sounded vaguely sexual. Small wonder I really only browse Ganker and /d/...
I bought the 3rd Birthday collectors edition for like $5 a while back but my PSP is dead.
Anyone else find the concept of rapid evolution interesting? Like, what would she have been like had she not sealed her powers?
>what would she have been like had she not sealed her powers
Literally Maya. She's locked up in Chrysler Building precisely as a backup plan.
You've got it reversed. The reason the normal game ending is the way it is is because you were fooled into thinking you defeated the right enemy. Eve is a complete red herring.
First game was better in every way. If I wanted to play a bad RE style game I'd just play RE 3 or SH4
CHRISTMAS CAKE! VERY YOUTHFUL!
I remember like 20 years ago helping some kids beat the dog boss in PE1.
Apparently they got that far without realizing you could use items in battle I blew their minds
The guy who worked on Mega Man Legends' combat soon worked on the same for this game soon after. He was one of the few who didn't join the rest of Square Osaka to work on FF11.
He then worked on the combat for KH1, CoM, KH2, the Eidolons for FF13, and then Versus 13... but his work was scrapped because Tabata wanted his battle system to be easy for non-RPG fans to get into. Casuals also liked it explicitly for that reason.
Say his name. Yuichi Kanemori, former member of Square Enix and DeNA. Moral of the story is Nomura made KH Osakashit from Day 1 lololololol
Based and soulful gameography
I want them both to share my wiener.
Uoh
Never played any PE games but some of the monster designs I've seen are really unsettling, I should play it some day.
Yeah you should
Yeah that one in particular. Way creepier in game than the concept art too. PS1 graphics definitely add to it.
They're semi-intelligent too they plan ambushes and dig under barriers
How did the game age? Hopefully poorly, I like clunky controls in horror games
One of the best aging PS1 games imo
It's on par with the RE games of that time
Its still very playable, controls are great.
>controls are great.
Why must you lie? Zoomers can't into tank controls anon. It's too much for them.
games don't age moron
the only problem with the controls is it doesn't have a quick turn, but seeing as how different weapons affect your turn speed, it was definitely on purpose and not a lapse of judgement
Can you imagine seeing enemies of P2 with modern graphics. As far as body horror goes, those frickers beat even dead space.
I think the developers were inspired by Man After Man. Some of the creatures are pretty similar to the ANMCs and the little stories about evolving humans to suit different environments sound a lot like the Neo Ark kooks.
>those ANMCs that only exist to be living generators
>you can read their minds and find out they're happy with their lives and beg you not to kill them
You can read their minds? What?
Yeah you can examine the generators after killing them
>Gentle days free from pain... Automated injections of comfort. So happy was I... So useful... It's not my fault... I'm helping! Helping everybody! I don't want to disappear... to die.
I hate that thing. Especially the boss version.
turn the resolution down, you're butchering that game ya fricking zoomer homosexual
>make thing look worse
no
>if only you knew
The monsters are some of the few designs that still creepy me out after being desensitized to horror media
What is this?
Its blood, I hope its not Chris' blood.
It looks like a video games to me

>The best "Resident Evil clone"
That's because the director of PE2 is the guy who wrote and created the Resident Evil lore, also the guy responsible in how RE1 should look and feel. A lot of the ideas that he had for the RE1 sequel were repurposed for PE2, so playing PE2 you're basically experiencing the true RE1 sequel.
Is Einhander any good?
WTF
You will never be one of us, WTF-kun.
Masterpiece.
Also vagrant story. And bushdo blade. Square on ps1 had the greatest run in history.
It's pretty fun.
Kenichi Iwao had a completely different idea for the RE1 sequel than what we got. RE2 was written by Noboru Sugimura who wanted to give more of a thriller feel to the series than the slow mysterious X-files atmosphere that we got in RE1 and PE2.
Thank you so much, sad they didn't use his ideas later on in the series.
Question how was PE2 ideas going to be made for RE2. Weren't they going for Raccoon city downfall in 2 and 3?
I enjoy both games. The only game deserving of hate is 3rd Birthday
Which one, Ganker?
VS
PE2 is so cozy, that bar scene with Kyle drinking coke is also cozy as frick
Welcome to McDonald’s within Walmart
Poops
Cool concept
Where the frick the guys that made these monsters kept something like that? in their underground facility?
It really makes you wonder where in the lab they kept something that huge
Also in Neo-Ark they claim the purpose of transhumanism is for pacifist purposes to make humans adapt to the environment and yet that thing has a huge flamethrower grafted in its own head, it shows how they had a desire to actually develop weapons along with the supersoldiers like No9
The flamethrower is for easy access to grills and barbecues while you're out with your friends. It's (You)r way of thinking unfit for the future we want.
Oh God. He was here.
>has never posted a source for this interview
if that was the case, why is that (now fired) hack Tabata listed as the director?
Looks like you're fricking moronic and illiterate because it fricking says why chad tabata was listed, BECAUSE NOMURA APPOINTED HIM IN THAT POSITION BECAUSE NOMURA SAID HE WAS TOO BUSY TO MAKE SUER THE GAME DEVELOPMENT WOULD BE ON TRACK
All tabata did was make sure the devs made the game with nomuras specifications and nomuras design documents and game design and plans and toriyamas story
all that shit was alright cemented in the game before nomura event assigned tabata onto the game you fricking illiterate moron
And based chad tabata left SE on his own choice 2 years after saving SE and FF and other SE devs like hasegawa the co director of twewy and art director of versus, and akira iwata the character designer of agni joined his company too
Nomura pitched t3b to begin with, it was literally his brainchild, he then planned its entire game design and he told toriyama his ideas for the story which toriyama then wrote the story nomura requested, nomura also designed the characters on top of coming up with the fundamental game design of t3b and was also literally creative producer which means he's creatively incharge including him overseeing all the voice recording sessions
nomura said he was just too busy to "direct", which in case you don't know is just the day in day out job of having the team making stuff according to the game design plans set at the start of development, to which nomura just appointed tabata to handle that since its just making sure the game is on track and each department is doing their job making the stuff according to the design document
t3b is 100% nomuras game even more than ff7r is.
I like flavor text in these old games.
Any other games that feature it front and center besides PE, Code Veronica and gunporn games like Jagged Alliance ?
Anyone else like to fight these guys?
the harder difficulties were more fun cus they started showing up earlier
Was this game on tiktok or something? Fricking no one wanted to talk about these games when I made threads.
I'm surprised too. This thread went better than I expected.
/vr/ is filled with PE2 fans, you should visit us sometime, PE2 threads last for weeks there.
Not him, but sometimes I forget that PS1 is a retro now.
I liked 3rd Birthday. Wish we got more of it. Overdiving was a fun mechanic, that stage on the 4th chapter (I think the one that has her boyfriend as the final boss) with the Mudflap slowly killing the group of soldiers one by one was pretty scary as a kid. So was the first chase with the Reaper.
The first one was boring. Half or the game was running around a zoo and a mueseum.
The second one was awesome.
I love late 90s PS1 game concept art.
so asethetic
