Pathologic 2 ARG

There's a Pathologic 2 ARG that's probably gonna lead to the Bachelor route and not only has nobody solved any of it, nobody's even talking about it! Come on guys, this is shameful

For real? I really want to play the Bachelor. His arrogance and ignorance of the foreign culture makes him more compelling to me as a PC than the other guy. Especially for a first playthrough. Post the ARG.

Kickstarter backers got cards with clues that led to this reddit account: https://www.reddit.com/user/FyodorVitin
The account posts images every once and a while, the first two essentially leading into it being about the Bachelor. This is the third. Nobody's been able to figure out the code in the bottom left and it's been over a week.

Anagram decoder can't find a 13 letter word. Might be two or three words. Might not be an anagram. I'll try ciphers.

Terrarium is in there. Seems appropriate. I'll take out the letters in "terrarium"

I think Terrarium is a good start for finding the words in the anagram bevause it leaves an "e" and a "d" so we can find "ed" words that can characterise the "terrarium"

                Anonymous

There are lots of words we can make after removing the letters in terrarium. Including coded, decode, deduce. Terrarium is also 100% the largest word we make with the initial letters. I'm like 75% sure terrarium is the first word if this is an anagram, which I think it is. At least part of it is.

It could be voided terrarium device. Either way, I'm sure the second word is at least 5 letters, since we can't make an 8 letter word after removing "terrarium" and one other from the subsequent available letters.

"Executor medici" means "Executor of a/the doctor" in latin, but it leaves behind VVAURRD, which I can't turn into a legible word, much less a verb that conjugates correctly.

I feel like the 196-17-1 code is something important that we're overlooking

I can pretty safely tell you what (who) V. Croy is.
That is Voronika Croy, a key figure of the previous ARG, member of the Hopscotch Enthusiasts FB group, who even makes a brief appearance in Pathologic 2 itself. She was written and "preformed" by Alpyna in the the old ARG, as you could actually fricking talk to her after registering to the Feverish website.

She was the one who revealed the whole Hopscotch Enthusiasts website, and as such was implied to be responsible for many deaths in that narrative.

In P2, it is mentioned that her father was an Inquisitor for the Powers-That-Be.

                >I wonder if looking through the old ARG will tell us anything?
Might be. Also, her role in P2 may be of some use.
I didn't remember this, but having looked it up to confirm that I'm not talking out of my ass, I checked her entire story in the game.
Apparently, you meet her once, in an optional meeting with Yulia one day before Aglaya's appearance, in which Yulia gives you info on what Inquisitors are.
Voronica is there, expressing fear that the Inquisitor that is expected to arrive might be her father. Since the post of Inquisitor in the town is believed to be a deliberate death sentence, she is very afraid of that possibility.

On the next day, you'll find her hanged in front of the cathedral, with a letter on her that says:

"Who can tally the number of drops in the sea? Who can tally the number of tears in this grief?"

I'm so happy it wasn't you, Father.

                - Veronica Croy.

In the ARG, obviously, her character was different - or at least a different version of her. She was apparently still a descendant of an Inquisitor, but she was a crazy women involved in extensive underground club of "internet detectives", a half-serious lot based around a private FB group called Hopscotch Enthusiasts.

As part of the OG ARG campaign, it was revealed that Voronika was key figure there, trying to genuinely expose some kind of illegal medical experiment in Russia. However, info about this group started to leak, and members of Hopscoth Enthusiasts started to die one after another, often in objectively HILARIOUS ways.

Voronica was together with some other butthole considered biggest suspect of leaking. She was the one who started sending out emails to random people, and she was the admit that ultimately flipped Hopscotch Enthusiast group from private to public.
However, by that time most members were dead, and she claimed she was innocent, and made the whole thing public to draw more attention and help reveal the true traitor.

Small addition after going through the profile.
Apparently, Voronica's father should be named Peter Croy.
Also, it was implied by the end of the ARG that Voronika ended up infected with the Sand Plague and was attempting to draw the attention of her father before she dies. He ultimately didn't help her, but did send a letter in which he claims he always loved her.

I would not be suprised if
                >of personal belongings (blacked out).
The blacked out name would be Peter Croy. Not sure if that helps or not. He is implied to be still under the Bureau's employment when Voronika is being sought after, it would make sense for them to look there first.

I am not sure if I'm getting the whole old ARG thing right, but I think Peter may have deliberately infected his daughter, actually, for some reason needing the plague to escape Bureau's grasp, he may have used her to "smuggle" the disease out?

          [...]
Hmm, okay. I had totally forgotten that she was in the actual game. I wonder if we have to do something with the note she leaves behind? This is good information.

The note may be interesting. But it also may be a red herring, because it is possible that Voronika in the game and in the ARG aren't the same people, and that they just included the in-game version of her as a wink at the audience.

The poem she cites in her death-note is apparently a line repeated by several characters in the game, including Capella and Maria.

I really should probably go all the way back to the OG campaign and read the whole Voronika story. I'm 100% there are going to be clues to the current one hidden somewhere in there, but Hopsotch is like 200 posts worth of text, so parsing it may take time.

The letter you find on day 7 says it smells like a swamp. Maybe hanging out in the swamp before then will trigger something?

          >The letter you find on day 7 says it smells like a swamp.
Interesting. In the ARG, Voronika claims she found a note her hidding place that she does not remember writing (but she is fricking dying and may be just blanking out).

          It goes like this:
"The beast of the bog has knocked on my door today. He smells like foxberry. He came after me. Farewell. The old door is open again—one last time."
It may have been written by her, or her father secretly visiting while she slept.

Small note though. P2's files have not been updated in several years. I find it rather unlikely that they would have enough forsight to implement cues to an ARG that would not be a thing for more than 4 years in future into the game, so I don't think going into the game itself is going to yield any results.

You mean Dankovsky, the guy in OP's picture?
He is a lot of fun.

      >What the frick did they mean with the time travelling shit?
Honestly? Nobody knows. All we know is that they were heavily inspired by Marble's Nest success, which ended up being a lot more popular than the base game.

I think the idea was not time-traveling, just providing a non-linear presentation of the story, meaning you'd play some of the late-game days first and then jump backwards (so you may play day 10 first, then jump back to day 1 and 2, then move to 7, but then go back to 3 etc...), but they themselves admited this direction in the end didn't pan out after all, and the focus shifted again.
To what? We have no clue, honestly. IPL are mad. NOTHING ever works out as advertised. Just look at P2 itself, and how far it ended up from what they were pitching in the israelite and all the way up to like 1 year before release on devblogs.
There isn't that much point in speculating.

I'm not even joking if we do get a route like they've promised I imagine some variation of what I just said will be in there

I personally wouldn't mind if was played in the same style as the Haruspex much like in Classic. However it would make things interesting if it does differ in how it is played.

          >I personally wouldn't mind if was played in the same style as the Haruspex much like in Classic.
Neither would I. I think the orginal formula is fricking brilliant and would have never asked for any changes. The industry is fricking shit for not appreciating it properly.
But... things are what they are, and so far, IPL suprised me possitively a lot more than disappointed me. They don't do things without reason, and are everything but lazy or cowardly, so if they have a new angle, there is a damn good chance they do it for a good reason.

We'll see. My personal hope was always that we'd see more of a strategy element to the whole situation. And it seems that is part of the changes, Dybowsky mentioned that it makes little sense that the man who is officially tasked by Powers-That-Be to fricking control the situation, would have to trade in his shoes for a piece of bread.
And there is one aspect of Marble Nest I particularly enjoyed. The element of dealing with the committees, and making decisions about which shopes should be closed and that all shit.
It's perfectly fitting for his situation, being more of an administrator than anything else, so my hope is that they will at least explore this angle more.

But yeah. If I had my way, I'd just tell them to hold on to the open-world survival blueprint, because while flimsy - it's also just incredibly immersive.

Same. I remember how worried I was when they said that P2 will have fast travel. But it turned out great.

Actually being in charge of quarantines and whatnot will be great, especially if during that time when you're trying to figure out time is still ticking. Not having enough time to properly think through your orders before rushing off to the Abattoir only to get KO'd by the kin, and waking up to a new morning worse than ever because YOU didn't properly command your orderlies would be amazing.

I doubt that it's more popular.
More like "more people finished it because it's short".

I get filtered by Ice Picks Lodge explanation of how the Bachelor route would play, that it wouldn't play like the Haruspex route.
What the frick did they mean with the time travelling shit?

Instead of "Post hoc ergo propter hoc," we're getting "Propter hoc ergo post hoc"
I'm not even joking if we do get a route like they've promised I imagine some variation of what I just said will be in there

It's actuallu a good idea to change gameplay formula. Otherwise it would be just a worse version of Haruspex campaign.
    >no surgeries
    >no herbs
    >no alchemy

And it doesnt make much sense for someone who has support of the elites to rummage through garbage cans and rob houses.

      >And it doesnt make much sense for someone who has support of the elites to rummage through garbage cans and rob houses.
Well in the OG Pathologic it not only made sense for him to do that, but it actually fitted with his character's dillema perfectly.
The snobbish upper class dandy who thinks himself above eveyone else learning how thin the veneer of civilization is. When on my very first run of Pathologic 1, I ended up murdering a family of 5 for a piece of bread, it felt like such a fascinatingly fitting development of his character specifically.

I agree that mechanically Daniil had zero interesting tools, only that hilarious lense that literally nobody used, EVER.
But you could still take the base premise of P2 mechanics and expand on it mildly. Give him more agency over the Orderlies or something, while sticking to the survival open world.

      >and so far, IPL suprised me possitively a lot more than disappointed me
Same. I remember how worried I was when they said that P2 will have fast travel. But it turned out great.

      >how worried I was when they said that P2 will have fast travel.
Yeah, good example. Also the idea that people don't die if you fail quests of the day: that sounded fricking awful, like they are completely throwing the core tension of the game away.

IPL have some bad games in their library, they are not flawless, but they also aren't stupid. In the end, I have no fricking doubt it will be insanely interesting. And I believe the days of CARGO are gone for good.

Do they have any stinkers aside from CARGO? I just bought the void and was thinking about checking out Know By Heart and Knock Knock when I'm done.

          >Do they have any stinkers aside from CARGO?
Knock-Knock is a very odd game that I can't honestly say is good. It's nowhere near as bad as CARGO!, but it suffers from a similar issue of being a fascinating concept and an experiment, but not making it work from a gameplay perspective. It gained rather horrible reviews in the process, though ironically, in the long run it was by far the most commercially succesful title they ever made thanks to being released for mobile platforms.

Know By Heart is a game I haven't played too much, but what I have seen, it is... kinda the opposite of CARGO and Knock-Knock. It's a completely perfectly functional title, but it is formally incredibly boring. It's just an interactive story with zero formal experiments. Which while by no means bad, still makes it the least interesting title they made.

          >All we know is that they were heavily inspired by Marble's Nest success, which ended up being a lot more popular than the base game.
It was? I didn't know that. I wonder why?

          >It was? I didn't know that. I wonder why?
Yes, it was. And as for why, it's incredibly simple. Unlike Pathologic 2, Marble Nest IS actually a walking sim. It's an entirely linear, short experience with nearly no fail states, zero actual pressure on the player, it's barely interactive.

It's what the mainstream wanted from the OG game. Everyone praised the opening of Pathologic 2 - the train sequence - but vast majority of the mainstream audience (and with that, obviously, journo's) completely turned on the game once it actually opened up. The pressure of responsibility and lack of simple handholding direction is something people actually hated, because... well it can be painful and stresful and can make you feel bad.

Marble Nest was like the opening, but a whole, self-contained story. It was perfect for the journo's and normies who enjoyed the narrative elements of it, but did not want to deal with responsibility and discomfort of actual gameplay.
It was the version of Pathologic they expected and wanted. Short. Linear. Pressure-free. Cleverly written. Calibrated to Journo/normie sensibilities.

Both Cargo and KbH were projects of Airat Zakirov - their tech guy. Not sure is Nikolai was involved in KbH at all.

              >Not sure is Nikolai was involved in KbH at all.
He definitely wasn't directing or designing, not in a serious degree. KbH was supposed to be the first in their planned collection of small mobile-friendly projects that were supposed to be each organized and lead by a different team member. Nikolay himself was focused on Project Franz, Know By Heart was, as you mentioned, Zakirov project, and they announced at least two other small projects each linked to another team member.
Their idea was, in their own words, to turn the studio in something of a think-tank for a while and give each member more freedom to work their own idea.

I didn't know CARGO was not directed by Dybowsky, though, because he sure as hell did present it as a typical IPL title. He was front and centre of every preview and interview about it.

Cargo doesn't count. They made it to frick with game reviewers who didn't like their previous games.
              >it's shit... on LE PURPOSE
Unironically yes and should be judged as such.

              >Unironically yes and should be judged as such.
I disagree. CARGO was a game intentionally fricking with their audience (as was Knock-Knock for sure), but it was shit in a way that cannot be dismissed as "being bad on purpose". It was a technical travesty in a way that also happened to undermine one of it's own points.
The silly art direction and completely bizarre tone - that can be seen as "bad on purpose", but the fact that the actual core mechanic - the vehicle construction - was also fricking awful, cannot. Same goes for the minigames being at best tedious, at worst repeatedly breaking.

That was just COMPLETELY shody programming, that is not covered on the "it's pissing people off on purpose".

Cargo was just bad. It was bad because technically, they bit off more than they could chew. They were not able to make the functional vehicle physics sandbox they set out to make, and that is just BAD, that cannot be excused in any way.

Damn, that's disappointing. I like supporting IPL however I can, but I avoided picking it up for so long since it just seemed so... bland. Guess I wasn't wrong.

            >Marble Nest stuff
Damn, that was all of the stuff I didn't really care for about the Marble Nest. I like how hopeless it is though, taking place on the last day when there's no hope is an idea I hope they revisit if they do the weird time travel thing, instead of the stripped down gameplay of it

              >Damn, that's disappointing.
I have the same problem, but then again, every single person I've met who actually finished it, told me it's still one of their absolutely best stories, and genuinely really worth playing.
It's just that it goes so far away from their trademark... but I'm not sure that is a fair reason to just dismiss it.

I haven't finished it because I feel like I'm not in the right mood for it. It's a bitter sweet personal letter of the creator to his childhood and the area he grew up, and it clearly is fricking honest and beautifully presented. Which is a fair game.
I would be pissed off if a main-stay game took no technical risks, but this is a small personal project of one of the less famous members of the studio, made during the time the studio was going through complete financial crisis...

Personally I kinda saw it as a one-man-made game published by IPL, and felt that was fine.

I wonder. It did in the end feel like a Dybowsky design. It was garbage, but it had all his trademarks.
Also, I'm reminded of that one interview where he mentions he got an offer from some western publisher who was interested in - get this - a fricking CARGO MMORPG.
Which is so funny in so many ways.
