He probably wanted to futureproof. A 3080 10gb can barely play at 1080p on ultra these days. So he needs that 4090 if he wants to play on 1080p 7 years from now.

A 4090 is literally twice the price of a 3080. If he really wanted to future proof he could’ve gotten the 3080 now and then another 3080 priced card in 3-5 years that blows the 4090 out of the water.

My 1080ti has 11gb of VRAM, it blows my mind to see all these new GPUs with just barely more than that. Is it the newer class of VRAM that makes it better, or are they just stagnating?

          >or are they just stagnating?
Your 1080ti is the issue Nvidia doesn't ever want to have again - high performance card that can be used for years and years in the latest and greatest. Skimping vram is a cost effective way to both reduce BOM and gimp a card so it has limited longevity.

            Anonymous

Is the Titan a good card compared to it? I've seen them for years but just kind of ignored them, looking at specs it seems like the same card as the 1080ti but with one extra gig of VRAM.

              Anonymous

iirc the pascal titan still had full FP64 so if you need that (hint: you don't for vidya) it is a beast. Otherwise it is just an expensive 1080ti in practical terms.

So it would be better for a workstation setting like video editing or 3D design? I've been wanting to build a video editing workstation and that might be what I put in it.

                is there a reason why 1080 Ti's are more expensive than a 2080 Ti's?

                >is there a reason why 1080 Ti's are more expensive than a 2080 Ti's?
1080ti is about 100 bucks cheaper than a 2080ti, I just bought my second one for 250 last week.

          >Is it the newer class of VRAM that makes it better, or are they just stagnating?
Just stagnating, memory bandwidth cannot make up for lacking capacity. The thing is that with the bus widths NVIDIA has been using for their top cards there just aren't many options. The 1080 Ti has a 352b bus width, this means 11 32b channels for 11 1GB memory chips, hence 11GB VRAM. The bus width depends on the bandwidth the card requires and NVIDIA's top cards have all been 320, 352 or 384b bus cards. Like I said before, that means 10, 11 or 12 32b channels that all need to be populated evenly with chips, so all these cards can get 10, 11 or 12GB VRAM, or they could double up to 20, 22 or 24GB VRAM. There is no in-between option like 16GB or 15GB or whatever else because you cannot evenly distribute the chips on all the 32b channels the card has and if you do that you get a GTX 970 3.5GB scenario where only a part of the VRAM is usable at full speed. That is obviously not desirable. Yet on the other hand just doubling capacity would be expensive since you either need double the chips or chips of double capacity (which may or may not have existed at the time each card was made). This has resulted in NVIDIA keeping VRAM on the low side for as long as they could afford to.

For a long time the 10-12GB VRAM size was just fine, even for 4k. 11GB was more than likely excessive for the 1080 Ti, but like I said they didn't really have any other options given its bus width. Since it was excessive back in 2017, it was fine for later cards too, like the 2080 Ti. It's only with Ampere where this started being pretty sketchy, though I'd still say a 12GB 3080 Ti is going to be generally fine today even at 4k, though maybe not always.

tl;dr: the choice is either to keep the same VRAM or double it, yet doubling it is expensive and was also largely pointless for games until recently

            Anonymous

Amd has been doing it for cheaper for ages now, so I don't believe it's that prohibitively expensive.
Nvidia just wants you to upgrade sooner and doesn't want their gaming GPUs to supplant their overpriced enterprise garbage.

              Anonymous

You're wrong, only the recently released 7900XT and 7900XTX have 320 and 384b bus widths respectively on the AMD side. Older cards from them have gone up to 512b and they've had the HBM cards too, but nothing particularly recent. Their last-gen cards had 16GB VRAM because they were using a narrower 256b bus (8 32b channels) and they also used slower, cheaper memory than NVIDIA does. So basically AMD chose more VRAM while NVIDIA chose higher bus width AND faster memory in order to maximize bandwidth.

Its the satisfaction of building something with your hands. Especially when it's something that you've upgraded and maintained for many years. To see that 10 fps boost is like when you tune the engine in a hot rod and get a second faster in the 1/4 mile. Just simple satisfaction.

The 13900k is basically uncoolable as you can't pull heat off the IHS fast enough.

So it would be better for a workstation setting like video editing or 3D design? I've been wanting to build a video editing workstation and that might be what I put in it.

1080ti is about 100 bucks cheaper than a 2080ti, I just bought my second one for 250 last week.

It will be better for software that uses double precision. You'd have to look up whatever software you want to use and see what it requires.

I saw that with the one I ordered but it seemed to not go on as precisely as my finger. I can feel if its uneven with my finger and the sharp edge of the spatula can put it on unevenly. I did however use it to mix the paste because it had separated.

Yeah, a console is a good fit for that.
I grew up with pc gaming. Back then, 20 years ago, it was normal for teenagers to build and play games on PC, at least in Germany.
Now I work in IT, so it kind of comes with the territory, but this also makes me not want to sit in front of one after work again some days of the week. Had every playstation since the first one, so got a ps5 last week. Astro's Playground looks so fricking good on an oled tv with hdr, great game.

I figured you gays could explain some shit to me.
I a ThinkPad E14 3rd gen. Has an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U with Radeon Graphics 1.80 GHz (AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 I believe). Now, Red Dead Redemption 2 is on sale on steam and I fricking want to play it. But I am not sure if or how my laptop will handle it. I can play Fallout 4, Gta IV and the modern Hitman games (with low settings but looks good) on it no problems. Here are some benchmarks for my gpu (for Red Dead they score ~ 36 fps on low settings): https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-RX-Vega-7-Graphics-Card-Benchmarks-and-Specs.450004.0.html

For Red Dead, the minimum/recommended specs are: Intel® Core™ i7-4770K / AMD Ryzen 5 1500X, and something equivilant to a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6GB / AMD Radeon RX 480 4GB graphics. So, could it be possible and worth it? On low settings, possibly even window mode? I do not know anything abouf GPUs and how mine compares to the ones listed above.

The last game they test is rdr2. It does 30 FPS at 720p on low. That's playable, but it'll look kinda shitty. You're scraping the bottom of the barrel with that kind of performance.

        Anonymous

I guess I could live with 720p. As long as there is no stuttering and the game is actually playable.

Follow up question. Is it a problem if the gpu works routinely at 100 percent the entire time you play it? Like is it sustainable for the laptop is my concern.

            Anonymous

The CPU is designed to operate like that. But if your laptop has bad ventilation it'll overheat and throttle. This won't affect its longevity, but ruin it's performance. Also having a hot as frick environment will probably affect the longevity of other components. It's not ideal at all. So it depends on your laptop's ventilation. Maybe stress test it now and see how your laptop handles the heat

you should state what you want to play, at what resolution and which framerate rather than just vague stuff like that.
but I'm gonna tell you to go with a 6700xt, ryzen 5600, 2x16gb ddr4 and a cheap b450 / a520 mobo. add in some random 1tb nvme ssd, an acceptable case and an ok psu and it should cost you around 750-800 bux total. perfectly fine for 1440p60hz or 1080p144hz gayman.

Sorry, I am moronic about computers. I dont really need to play anything super high end, but would be nice with faster loads times in Warhammer 3. Dont care much about graphics and fps. I usually play older games, but that might be because of my old laptop. Thanks for the rec

its so weird a person with 100% male interests like this one day goes and says "im a woman on the inside". like there is absolutely nothing female about the person who lives in this room. not a single real woman on the planet is interested in this nerd stuff.

what kinda normie trash? a 5600g apu can run older ganes / esports passably but if you need to run newer games id get a ryzen 5 5500 + rx 6600 build. take the cheapest a520/b450 mobo you can find and 16gb ddr4 3200mhz/cl16, use whatever ssd and an acceptable case and psu. with the 5600g this shouldnt cost more than around 500 usd, with the 6600 you're paying around 650.

The 4070ti will sell well to fools because ultimately no matter how bad value it is you can't sell a 1000 dorra card to someone who only has 900 dorra to spend. The smart move is to hunt down a used 3090(ti)/6900xt or - depending on street prices - get a 7900 xt.

You think it's bloat but you don't even realize how little resources it uses. You uninstall it despite it being a core part of the OS and there's a reason why Microsoft doesn't let you uninstall it normally. Even if you get ZERO use out of it makes no sense to uninstall it because it has zero impact.
Comparing it to Disney+ is just peak dishonest. You've got no arguments left.

This is what everyone calls preinstalled garbage from an OS install. Especially when other programs do exactly what this crap from Microsoft tries to push on users. You are brainwashed if you think that preinstalled garbage is good for you just because Microsoft doesn't allow you to uninstall it.

Prebuilts like to cheap out on things like PSUs and sometimes give you less upgradeabilty.

There’s also a kind of nerdy fun with computer Lego assembly, and prebuilt are always laden with garbage shovelware , if you’re going to have to nuke and pave anyways, why bother?

Thinking about upgrading my CPU and motherboard. My 4770k has served me well, but it’s gradually dropping below minimum requirements for some newer titles that I’m interested in. Should I go AMD or intel? I was thinking about shopping around for an AM5 socket mobo since AMD said they were going to support it for about another decade or so, leaving me with some options later down the line. On the other hand, I kinda want to wait until they come out with a few more AM5 GPUs. Also, how hard is it to install a new Mobo and CPU? I watched a lot of videos on it and it seems simple enough.

Add up the motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 price and get whatever is cheaper. If it's Intel, get that, if it's AMD, get that. This will depend on deals and location. But both are neck and neck at the moment and both are fine choices.

The AMD cpu is an EASY choice here, and I say that as somebody running a 13900. The 7900x benchmarks noticably higher than the 13700 and consumes significantly less power, which also means it is much easier to cool. Your 240mm radiator will NOT be able to cool the 13700 at full load, most 360mm radiators will not be sufficient for that. It should be sufficient for the 7900x though.

Price. The cheapest 4tb SSDs cost around 50% more per GB. Would have been nice in terms of expandability, since I could run 4x4 eventually, but not for an extra $300.

Yep. Feels good to finally have something worthwhile, after running on the same CPU/Motherboard for 9 years.

this guy has. As opposed to a custom loop where you buy a CPU cooler, a radiator, a pump, reservoir, tubing, etc. and plumb it together yourself. If you're spending over 4 grand on a PC there is no reason not to do a custom loop unless you're just lazy. Especially at that price, you might as well spend a bit extra and water cool the GPU as well.

Custom loops cost WAY more, there's MUCH greater risk involved especially if you don't have any experience with them, and depending on the setup they might not even offer any real advantage.

Eventually had to go on disability because of it. One day either it'll kill me or magically go away, that's how it usually goes.

you can buy pretty long display port cables and other cables
you can also try wireless keyboards and mice, the tech has come a pretty long way
i don't think that surrounding your pc with air purifiers is going to do anything though
if you really want to meme it up build a shelf that's high up and put your PC on it since most of the dust and such settles to the ground

Yeah that was my secondary ideal, I live in a fairly short 1-story though so much higher than my desk is the ceiling. I have like 20m cables for monitors and power and ethernet and such so that's not a problem.

10+ years with this build so far OP
I'm right now trying to build something for a friend who's falling hard for the RGB and tempered glass memes.

A little RGB is alright, just don't go crazy with it. Tempered glass does look good if you have any kind of not shit build, and you are I'd say you are 95% likely to end up with an actually better case that way anyway (defined by airflow, ease of building/cleaning etc, maybe I/O).

No, but I have to. Because my gaming computer died. I've replaced the power supply, ram, hard drive, graphics card and even the processor with known working spares but it still won't even give a beep code during POST.

    Where did I go wrong?
