I remember when you could make 700$ rigs better than a PS4, now you need to go upwards of $1500 to even match the PS5's power and even then most games are poorly optimized on high end PC'S and run better on a PS5

The average duration of a c*nsole generation is 6 years.
You have to pay for online - that's an additional cost of $360 ($60 * 6).
You have to pay for games - assuming you buy 4 games a year, that's a total cost of $1440 ($60 * 4 * 6). $60 isn't the limit anymore with $70 becoming the base price, DLCs and other bullshit.
Mid-gen upgrade c*nsole - assuming you're able to sell the old one, the additional cost is around $250.
Gamepad replacement - $70. You WILL experience stick drift.
So, what do we have? $2720 or more for a full c*nsole generation experience, and I'm sure I'm missing some other hidden costs.
Meanwhile, you'll still need a PC for browsing or to get pretty much anything done.

Biggest reason I got into pc gaming was modding. That’s really it - I like to frick around with games to change or improve them to my exact preference. Hardware is too expensive for it to be worth getting into nowadays, I agree; used to be that pc was cheaper in the long run, but not so much anymore.
Funnily enough, it’s not really most of the components - just the gpu’s that are atrociously overpriced. MSRP doesn’t exist in practicality, and “price per frame” is a dumbass metric. Nevermind the fact gpu brands and game publishers work together, creating these photorealistic open world garbage collector sims to justify otherwise overkill expensive hardware that otherwise wouldn’t be needed, in return getting free marketing from hardware brands.
The good news is that most pc games run fine on cheap hardware still. Additionally, the library is much larger than any console ever, since backwards compatibility is almost never a concern.

A $2000 PC will last you a decade minimum without ever needing to upgrade a single component. You can also play literally tens of thousands of games without paying a single dollar.

Its not bad if you build an average pc. I own a 2070 super and can run any game fine at max resolution with my 34 inch 144hz ultrawide. I think you can find the card for like 300 or 400 bucks now. If you want to truly future proof you machine then you're an idiot if you don't think that will be pricey. Maybe. I haven't looked. I got my card in like 2019 before crypto mining ramped up and people became "poor rich" during covid gibs. I plan to upgrade to the 4090 (maybe. Depends on its cost by then and other options) but I got at least one to two years on my machine before ill feel the itch to upgrade. That would make 5 yrs owning my pc without any issues. Can't complain.

PCs go through periods of value and lack of value compared to consoles.
In the 90s PCs were fricking expensive and struggled with 2D games of the time despite simultaneously doing 3D that consoles couldn't.
Then in the 2000s prices started coming way way down and even 3D accelerated PCs could be had for relative cheapness. Console to PC ports still sucked though.
PC hit its absolute peak from 2006 to 2012 where the consoles shit the bed and Unreal was the dominant engine. Even the shittest PC could get better than 360 graphics and everything came to the PC because porting was easier than it had ever been.
But when the PS4 came about the cracks were beginning to show. Now you needed a "decent" PC if you wanted to 1080p60 what the PS4 would 900p30. You were still better, but you were starting to have to pay for this rather than get it for free.
Now with the PS5 even high end hardware struggles to trounce the PS5. Most PC players without the latest cards and CPUs have to settle for PS5 like performance. It's not helped by the fact that the industry road to vulkan/DX12 is still full of bumps and potholes.
Maybe next gen we'll be back to cheap as chips again, maybe it will get worse before it gets better. Maybe microsoft completely shits the bed and forces everyone onto linux and we'll have to spend years playing catchup in performance and availability. who knows. What I do know is, you don't pick PC because you want an easy life.

I really don't think you can meaningfully contribute to video game discussion if you only have a console.
Part of the problem is that consoles have a library that is functionally nothing but goyslop. There are no niche or hobbyist games on consoles so you really are barely playing video games at all. No one cares about your opinion on Forspoken, because that game, and every big budget game like it is largely shit. The only reason I still upgrade parts is because of Capcom and From Soft, that's it. Sony and Nintendo used to have really unique games as late as the PS3/wii era, but not anymore. I have a switch now and it feels like nintendo is really phoning it in. BotW is a literal ubishit clone. If you aren't playing those niche PC games then you have no idea what video games are about and you have no standards.

When I dock it, there's not much difference from a work laptop, it can run OpenLibre if I need to update my resume, check emails, play music, etc. Although it would absolutely not be feasible if you needed to render things or probably edit videos, but I don't do any of that.
Id take it as my main PC over playing on console most of the time.

(i tried hi-fi and did not enjoy it at all) i have no idea what the benefit you get from owning a series S or PS5 is. i remember with PS3 you got little big planet, fat princess, from soft exclusives, all sorts of weebshit, all kinds of killer games and a huge backlog of ps1 and ps2 games, nothing like that is on a PS5 and series S is even worse. with my switch its just shit games that i play for one weekend and never again, something worth playing releases maybe once ever 6 months and i have zero desire to replay any modern nintendo game. PC generally has better options for way more niche stuff, i probably sunk about 1500 hours into fightcade before i got bored of it and theres nothing like wargames, grognard RPGs, RTS, etc on consoles, so i guess they just arent good enough for someone like me but if you can live with a lower level of quality and less interesting games because you're just lazy that's good for you.

What confuses me more then anything is that Yakuza. Kiwami the game starts shitting the bed almost immediately, but Kiwami 2 which I imagine would cause more strain to the PC runs perfectly fine.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about price? I wouldnt pay scalper prices for things but I did spend $400 on a 3060ti. My PC is like $2,000 easily, I also have a PS5 a Deck and a Switch. I like video games so it's not "expensive" for me to pay money to enjoy my hobby.

I can buy a 1000 dollar gaming pc at my local microcenter that is on par with all current gen consoles and it has the added benefit of being able to emulate PS3/X360 games and lower.
