Sure, it's not complete shit, but it's got too many drawback imo. I for one am mostly playing older games, and I don't want my DX9 shit to run in emulation and my DX11 shit to run like shit. These cards legitimately belong in cheap prebuilds where retards won't know any better about how shit these are, because they'll just play GTAV and fortnite anyways.

Intel GPUs' right now aren't good at gaming, buying a RX 6650XT or a RTX 3060 right now gives you much better consistency and in a lot of cases, frames over the best A770 card from Intel. The only reason to buy it now is doing compute AI tasks where it's the cheapest 16GB card with that support and getting access to cheap hardware AV1 encoding which won't come for a while from AMD or Nvidia. Otherwise, you're gambling on fine wine driver improvements, which nobody can guarantee how long or how good it will be. The potential is there for it to trade blows with the RTX 3070 and beat the RX 6700XT when all the stars aligned with some of the Vulkan benchmarked games like Doom Eternal and Strange Brigade. But I doubt it will ever get to that point before the next generation Battlemage launches for Intel.

The shitty thing no review did was review performance with DXVK. D3D9On12 and D3D11On12 which are Windows interoperability layers put in by Microsoft which is what Intel is using inside their driver is piss poor and not even close to being battle tested compared with DXVK.

To be fair, most of these outlets want to show what kind of out of the box performance you can expect and this shitty situation is just they can offer out of the box. Running games with DXVK requires changing game specific files, so afaik that's not something you can manage through drivers. With how well arc works with low level APIs though, I'd be really interesting to see how well DXVK performs. Might be a great solution to the current issues it faces.

          Anonymous

It will probably bridge the gap quite a bit but unfortunately, it will be a long term tweak Intel GPU owners will need to use for legacy games, although DX11 might eventually be good but who knows. I don't see Microsoft doing a favor for Intel with the Wintel monopoly dead to improve D3D9On12 to the point they can compete with DXVK. D3D11On12 might get there.

      Anonymous

It doesn't even run fortnite without crashing, if whatever Intel plans on doing accounts for needing another generation to even get close to competing with AMD then it's fine I guess but that price is steep for what is very much just beta testing.

Arc probably will age like fine wine, if intel sticks with trying to improve drivers and optimizes shit for new games as they release.
It's very obvious by looking at the best case scenario, that it should be able to compete with the 3070. So, you'd buy an A770 for $300 today, but get equivalent performance to a $500 3070 tomorrow. Doesn't sound like the worst deal, but the fact that old games suffer and probably will never get fixed sucks bad.

On Linux you can use DXVK for older DirectX, VKD3D for DirectX 12, and Zink is shaping up nicely for OpenGL over Vulkan so you only really need Vulkan support from the drivers, but are things different on Windows?

i dont know but im guessing that those layers such as dxvk only enable you to run legacy APIs through translation or emulation, but it will not magically transform how the rendering engine works internally

      Anonymous

You can use DXVK and Zink on Windows. Main issue right now is Intel is using Microsoft's own DX9 and DX11 to DX12 converter in their own Windows drivers and they are responsible for most of the horridness with the card in many legacy titles. Which is making many people wonder what the performance of using DXVK would be on Windows and no one with the card has tested that yet.
The unfortunate thing is if you get better performance with DXVK and Zink, you're likely to need to keep using them because it's doubtful Intel can convince Microsoft to make their translation layers good so it's likely needed going forward when playing legacy titles even if DXVK and Zink fixes all the legacy API problems because Intel isn't using them in their own drivers built in.

        Anonymous

Oh I see, so the drivers for the new cards don't implement those older APIs directly but use MS' translation layers that are nowhere near as mature? Seems like an odd choice, I didn't even know MS had something like that.

i dont know but im guessing that those layers such as dxvk only enable you to run legacy APIs through translation or emulation, but it will not magically transform how the rendering engine works internally

Well yeah, that's what a translation layer does. Ideally it shouldn't have a noticeable performance penalty, but obviously there'll be some games with issues.

          Anonymous

but if a gpu performs terribly on dx9 for example, and you had some kind of a layer to translate it to vulkan, that wouldn't automatically negate the terrible dx9 performance. right?

because i can't imagine intel not going that route if that's possible. they even said that game optimization is a multi-year process

            Anonymous

intel also pushed it out of the oven while its still fucking raw so who knows not that i can check it tho

            Anonymous

It's not that simple, for example it is possible that a powerful card has shitty dx9 performance because its driver has a poor implementation of it, and the performance can be improved by using a dx9-over-vulkan translation layer that implements dx9 better if the driver performs better with vulkan. Of course it's also possible for a card that would otherwise perform well to make a game run like shit with a translation layer.
In Intel's case they probably chose this way simply because they didn't want to spend time implementing old legacy APIs in the driver when translation layers can do a "good enough" job.
