I beat the armageddon's blade campaign a few months ago and some of the maps were a goddamn pain in the ass. Some of them really came up to replaying the map a few times to sort of know where the enemy towns are, rush them, and then focus on the objective by cheesing.
    Overall, good time.

The AI cheats like a motherfricker

On the later maps of the later campaigns they start with 10 cities and a gallion of resources and troops and you have no towns and 6 of your best heroes without any army pretty much. It's fricking impossible if you don't farm good spells early.
You really do have to chesse with expert town portal and expert door dimension or you're just never beating this shit.

yeah enemy heroes are also higher level than yours and AI can see everything you do

Yeah they really toned up the difficulty going from the original campaign. You pretty much have to get all the stat boosters and build every town's mage guild to make sure your main hero is beefed up for the next mission.

Isn't the only real roadblock in H3 vanilla campaigns the final map of Devils and Dungeons?
The rest is possible to play trough without using advanced mechanics, outside of resetting if you failed to guess the map layout/gimmick correctly.

So I get them the devs upping the difficulty.

I didn't have nearly as much of a hard time the last time I played the Restoration of Erathia campaign.
The map that fricking kicked my ASS HARD was "Tunnels and troglodytes". Holy shit this was difficult.

The second-to-last time I tried to beat armageddon's blade I got stuck on the mission of slaying a gorillion dragons to get every resource generation point in the map. The last time I finally managed to beat this shit and the later campaigns were even worse. Almost the entirety of the one where you play with the fortress witch was a pain in the ass, but satisfying to beat.

I've never played the shadow of death campaign but I'll tackle it eventually.

Disciples 2 is great, too bad it runs like shit on modern software. At the very least I don't remember the AI turns taking so long back in the day.

    Yeah, no.
HoMM3 may be peak of the franchise in terms of mechanics, content, ballance and all that stupid meaningless game shit, but the soul was thoroughly sucked out when they moved away from the hand drawn animation and the opera singing.

HoMM2 is the absoute peak soul of the franchise, and maybe that of the entire generic fantasy subgenre.
Sure. It's not as good as a game. But seriously, tell me that hideous PCV look of HoMM3 can even begin approaching something like this:

I'm sorry but in terms of soul HoMM3 is a distant cousin.

      Contrarian

No, because I'm not denying the actual qualities of HoMM3. It's a fantastic game, one of the best TBS ever made, absolutely a step-up from 2 on almosst every level, and I have no reason to dispute that. That is what a contrarian would do.

I have however grown up with HoMM1/2, and I will argue, there is much more charm and soul in the second game, due to how it still relied heavily on more traditional tools of expression, and it's far more limited scope and less professional production. It's messier, it's all hand-crafted (every single frame of every single animation is done by hand in this game), it shows more passion than polished production values, and it deliberately invokes the aesthetics of classic children's picture books.

There is a degree of expression and individualism that gets lost with larger teams, more efficient means of production etc... That form of expression is precisely what we call "soul".

Sometimes, having more soul but a messier isn't worth it. HoMM3 is a better product. But it does have less soul. Less of individual human's raw expression is lost in the process, even if it is for a greater good.

That is not a contrarian opinion.
