Thoughts on this game, Ganker? The game design and controls look excellent, I love the sound, I love the 4th - 7th influence over the game's style, but the overt bauhaus influence on the visuals is breaking my heart. I want these guys to do well, and there's a lot to like about the style, but an ugly style like bauhaus can really fuck over an otherwise stellar game.
Here's a stream they did recently that showcases the game.
A guaranteed flop. Arzest won.
this
will be balan blunderworld : electric boogaloo
They already lost no matter what happens with Penny, Superstars flopped compared to Mania.
>Superstars flopped compared to Mania.
Superstars sold better than Mania, because Iizuka was right and normies will always prefer 3d over pixel, even if its mediocre 3d.
>Superstars sold better than Mania
If you mean in Japan, well yeah, Japan has never liked Sonic. Where I live the game was top 5 on the eShop for days before recently dropping and I imagine it'll garner some sales when it goes on sale for Black Friday/Christmas. I also imagine the game doesn't have to sell as much as Mania to break even since it's 60 rather than 20
>Superstar
>3D
Pick one.
Superstars uses 3d models and assets, anon.
It's a 2D game, though.
And it uses 3d models and assets, because as Iizuka said, normies will always choose that over pixel art.
>because as Iizuka said, normies will always choose that over pixel art.
lmaoing at Sega
Though they probably went with 3D because its cheaper and allows them to reuse assets.
Anon... normies aren't playing Pizza Tower
I don't know if that's true.
One of my in-law's is a huge sports person and doesn't really play anything that isn't surface level.
He played Pizza Tower and liked it enough to play it again with his little kid.
Can this shithole of a board stop posting Steam numbers when 0% of the worlds population fucking play on Steam? The statistics that companies use aren't from fucking Steam fuckwads.
For games only on Steam, it is a useful point of comparison. But Superstars is a multiplatform game.
What isn't useful is thinking Supersistars would have been any better with sprites when 85% of the content in Supersistars isn't possible to recreate with 2D sprites in the time it took to make Supersistars, while also, more importantly, being produced by fucking Arzest.
You clowns make zero sense in reality.
>85% of the content in Supersistars isn't possible to recreate with 2D sprites in the time it took to make Supersistars
Why not? Superstars has been in development since around 2020.
>Why not?
Tell me how are you going to recreate the dynamic camera angles in this game, the bosses, etc etc in 2D with the time it took to make this game being like 2 years or some shit? With now yet another Sonic game coming out this year, it was never a possibility of delaying the game just to pull off one gimmick artstyle that only 30 year olds ultimately live and die for.
The dynamic camera angles (which Superstars barely makes use of anyway) would have never been considered in the first place if the game was being made with 2D sprite assets. Although they could have also went the Mania route and had certain assets still depicted with 3D models.
I'm not really seeing why mostly everything else couldn't have been done with sprite assets in 2.5 years when Mania itself was made in a single year with a significantly smaller team and budget.
>The dynamic camera angles (which Superstars barely makes use of anyway) would have never been considered in the first place if the game was being made with 2D sprite assets.
So a glaring limitation that Iizuak himself pointed out.
>I'm not really seeing why mostly everything else couldn't have been done with sprite assets in 2.5 years when Mania itself was made in a single year with a significantly smaller team and budget.
Because it means far less content down the line to work into a longrunning series, which was the entire argument against the "NSMB" effect people expected from a Mania series. I personally think they were right about that considered all fan games all look alike and only like 2 classic Sonic fan games stand out from them but the issue is they actively blur the line between classic and Modern Sonic intentionally in those fan games, making the split pointless as is.
>So a glaring limitation that Iizuak himself pointed out.
Iizuka was just talking out of his ass like he's always done for the past fifteen years. Funnily, the most Superstars does with it's 2.5D presentation is foreground-background shifting and having a large tower spiral in the background, which are both things that Mania did also despite being a fully 2D game.
>Because it means far less content down the line to work into a longrunning series
Has nothing to do with what we're talking about, i.e. they could have made 2D assets for Superstars in the time they spent developing the game. Nice attempt at shifting the topic, though.
So you rather sacrifice the idea of a continuous to evolve from approach Superstars just to get a pixel art game that likely wouldn't have done any better from Mania which already has been proven to have sold less than both this game so far and Frontiers which was already stated to be the most sold Sonic game of all time (without bundle inflation from SEGA consoles?)
You're in TWO threads running damage control for Superstars. Drink some bleach, you need to clear some of that autism up.
Sorry but I'm only in this thread. I actually don't care about superstars because it's an arzest game, I'm just not sold on the idea a sprite based 2D Sonic series is going to hold up in 2010+13. So many sprites games since Mega Man 9 prove to me it's a very, very shitty longterm investment business practice and talented people can indeed make 3D games better than 2D ones. SEGA just don't hire good anyone most of the time, 2D sprites isn't going to magically make their games any less shit.
Look at you, trying to shift the topic yet again even after being called out.
My conversation with you is about the devs being able to make Superstars with 2D assets in the time it took to develop the game. They clearly could have done so, and I'll take your continuing avoidance of this topic as your concession.
>My conversation with you is about the devs being able to make Superstars with 2D assets in the time it took to develop the game.
And I'm saying the point in doing so outway the possiblity they COULD. You're using what Evening Star could do, not what ARZEST and the rest of Sonic Team could do. This isn't a company known for having talented animators that can handle sprite based Sonic content on the level on the 90s (which in itself is outdated to the expectations of animation in current year). Dimps isn't making the games, and Evening star was kicked out. So who's left than could rival what Mania produced at SEGA at this point?
>And I'm saying the point in doing so outway the possiblity they COULD.
You're just moving goalposts. You were specifically talking about time before, not the devs' capabilities.
>Evening star was kicked out.
Evening Star is literally in Superstars' credits.
>You're just moving goalposts
You're just coping over facts. One year making a game by people with history with their craft /= one year making a game by people with a history not doing said craft. Time was only a factor, not the only deciding one.
>Evening Star is literally in Superstars' credits.
And? Speical thanks /= worked on the game. It's a tribute to the inspirate making the game in the first place, using their code to recreate it for superstars.
>You're just coping over facts.
There's nothing for me to cope with. You just keep moving goalposts and shifting the topic around because you can't admit that what you said was stupid.
The art team on Mania didn't have a history of making commercial sprite-based projects either.
>And?
And it means they were never "kicked out" if Sega was still fine with reaching out to them for consultation purposes.
>The art team on Mania didn't have a history of making commercial sprite-based projects either.
> commercial sprite-based projects
? Anon you might need to stop sucking Mania's dick for a second if you seriously think Mania's shit compares to the likes of Metal Slug, it's not that extreme. And no, Stealth did have history in sprite animation, so did PagodaWest Games and even Taxman likely did since Retro Sonic's Egg Garden was made by him as well. That's still far more than fucking Arzest.
>Anon you might need to stop sucking Mania's dick for a second if you seriously think Mania's shit compares to the likes of Metal Slug, it's not that extreme.
Are you an ESL? I didn't say anything like that.
Mania is a commercial project that uses sprite assets. PagodaWest's previous commercial projects used HD art. Taxman and Stealth didn't work on Mania's art, so whatever experience they have is irrelevant.
So no, "history with said craft" is not an argument since it applies to both dev groups. Which means, yes, Superstars could have been made with 2D sprite assets in 2.5 years. This discussion is stupid.
aren't most people complaining about the forced epic game store on boot up for superstars
that was patched out a day or two after release
I saw the steam page on the first day of release and that's what most of the reviews were about, and it had a "Mixed" score since then.
that's nice, but irrelevant to my post
you seriously believe those first day reviews don't have any relevance to how the current score is now?
I wasn't talking about scores at all, just pointing out that the forced start-up epic thing people complained about was patched out pretty quick, or at least moved behind the multiplayer mode that no one bothers with
>they probably went with 3D because its cheaper and allows them to reuse assets
They went with 3D because Sega wanted to sell the game for more than 30-40 bucks, and normalfags consider 2D art inherently "cheaper" than 3D.
In the similar way DKC did it instead of a full 3D environment like real 3D Sonic games.
agreed with the flop part
The character design is terrible but it'll still be better than any 3D Sonic game
Hate Penny's design, most indie games do not get what makes a good design.
Despite that, it looks great and i'll prob play it day one
>Hate Penny's design, most indie games do not get what makes a good design.
It's so frustrating, every single one is trash. I think the only truly exceptional indie designs are Shovel Knight and Cuphead. Keep it simple, for fuck sake.
Shantae, Hollow Knight, Isaac, and Slugcat are good designs too. Hat Kid also has a good design. There are plenty of indie devs with good character design. What do they have in common? They don't take influence from fucking bauhaus.
Penny is a wonderfully animated character, in motion it's not that bad, and maybe that'll be enough to salvage her. But having a character that's only half as appealing as they otherwise could be appealing makes me very concerned for this studio, because I know all of them are brimming with talent and potential.
the way the people in that image talk makes me want to suck on a shotgun
Blasphemous has amazing designs. In fact, the art hard carries the game.
La Mulana
Despite how much shit "Design by Committee" gets, these kinds of designs are really the types of designs people want.
The trick is getting a Committee of people with similar but different enough tastes to poke and prod at a general concept until you get something that's appealing.
Random autist 32 is not going to design the next Pikachu or Mickey Mouse in their basement unless they arrive at a niche first because individual creators are blinded by their own tastes. Sometimes that's cool, but not most of the time.
Looks like a tranny game.
Yep
>we want the digital circus audience
This shit was announced way before the twitter show
Digital circus has been developed at the same time before.
this existed before digital circus
you fool
If this game starred Pomni and other Digital Circus characters it would sell gangbusters.
is it out
The MC's design is so agressively bad that it will very likely fuck with the sales
Too bad everything else looks incredible
Pretty much. I can say with confidence that if I didn’t know who was making the game, just one glance of the protagonist would probably be enough for me to put the game into ”meh, forget about that” folder where I would never think about the game again unless it’s going to get absolutely rave reception on release.
DONT BUY WOKE GARBAGE!!!
she looks great with the hat on. you people are smoking crack.
She's definitely got some cult classic Marina Lightyears energy. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's just something about this design that makes it just a bit too complicated
The face and hair are hot garbage. I have no fucking clue what they were thinking with those eyes. It looks like what this anon posted
There's the Marina inspiration and also she looks like a weird genesis platformer character for some reason. Maybe pulseman or Dynamite Headdy or something. I see what they were going for but it doesn't look appealing. The hair and headpiece are the worst part for me.
I'd like her more if she didn't have a fuck-ugly face and didn't look like some unholy amalgamation between a rejected Megaman boss character and a black clown.
Marina is cute, do not compare her to this monstrosity
Penny... perfected
I forgot I was meaning to reply to
with my contribution
Teeth make her much better, but I still don't like the Stewie Griffon head.
This is the best one. Her eyes look so fucktarded.
I think the narrower head works. I'm neutral on the other changes. I like the original's funky eye shape and the more muted nose, but I don't think making it look like makeup is a bad direction for her kind-of jester design.
The lighter skin makes it clear that the original doesn't have much value contrast between her face and her clothes, but I don't know if that's a bad thing.
>The lighter skin makes it clear that the original doesn't have much value contrast between her face and her clothes, but I don't know if that's a bad thing.
I think it probably is, when it seems like they're trying to put emphasis on Penny's facial animations, and it's typically a good thing for a character's skin to pop out from their clothes.
Everytime I see threads of this game I'm reminded of how GODAWFUL Ganker's taste in character design is
This is so much fucking better it isn't even funny, what the fuck?
It's hard to take any of your design notes seriously when you're clearly preoccupied with one aspect of her character
>It's hard to take any of your design notes seriously when you're clearly preoccupied with one aspect of her character
Three. Shape, color, and proportion.
You're obsessed with her color, alright
You seem to be more obsessed with it than I am.
Just interesting how you could have changed the color of her clothes but chose not to
Because it's not an issue. I think the use of all three bright primary colors is fine. It just contrasts horribly with darker colors. Look at these examples of good color distribution over here:
A splash of black here and there is fine to give emphasis. Like Dedede's big expressive eyes or Pomni's hair that frames her face, and her eyelids that give her that crazy look.
But otherwise, as a major presence in the design, only very light colors can contrast nicely with the primary colors within the same design. that's why King Dedede's fluff on his robes and his puffball on his hat are white. That's why Pomni's skin is white. Dull dark brown is just bad. It gets lost in the colors. Making her chalk white or just giving her pale skin is an objective improvement. Go ahead and cry racism like an idiot over that fact.
>Because it's not an issue
Very interesting
It makes more sense to change one color that isn't working than change three that are.
Why can't she be dark skinned? She is literally an original character, they didn't make Peter Parker or Velma black, but that's still something you think is worth sacrificing to retain the color of her clothes. Does this character archetype not work with dark skin?
Try actually reading the post.
Yeah, I read it. I don't think your flimsy color theory is a good excuse to delete a dark skin character for existence. So I ask you, in your infinite wisdom, how do you make the current skin tone work?
If the character is supposed to be "representation" first and be artistically appealing second then it's a shit design. My priority is art, not politics, and I'm not going to change the entire color scheme when it makes sense to just change one color that makes it work better.
Interesting
>color theory
>flimsy
You couldn't show any clearer how ignorant you are. If you want to give her a color scheme of orange, black, and purple, the brown skin would look great. But when the other characters are the three primary colors, it doesn't contrast well, and more muted colors would be greater detriment to the intention of the character (colorful performer) than changing the skin tone.
black and purple dont fit a colorful performer? please please please just say you hate naggers instead of working backwards to make it sound more rational than that
>yfw
The blue and yellow they used look horrid together and the red doesn’t help. Who the hell thought having a character that’s equally comprised of the three primary colors was a good idea
Pomni's also red/yellow/blue as far as color schemes go but she's way more popular. If anything, I'd argue it's the body shape that's fucking up color distribution making her unpleasant to look at. The brown skin also clashes too. Would be better if there was a part of her that wasn't round.
The fuck did you say?
People are talking good character design, no reason to bring Kirby into this.
Epic empty snarky twitter post, you should write Marvel movies.
Maybe I will.
More circular blobs with one eye that are the super ultimate life form that will totes destroy all existence over here, please!
The design can work. Just hire more talented artists.
I like this but since she's a clown she needs the pale white makeup
For fuck sake It's because she's supposed to be a Jester and nothing about her design says Jester if anything I would've like it more if she's some kind of entertainer robot then it would've make sense
Why is she brown? It clashes with the design.
>Here's a stream they did recently that showcases the game.
Might help if I included the damn link.
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1963513046?t=7h46m58s
>Ask the guy what the combo counter does
>"Anyway so the yoyo is really versatile"
Lmao
Gameplay looks good, but the mc design looks like something out of the how to draw manga books
I'll give it a shot, I love platformers and I want to support Evening Star
im pretty sure everyone that bashes her design is a spiteful furry.
thats a woman? even worse then
>thought it released like 2 months ago for some reason
>check and see it's not out yet
character design is bad.
game looks good, environment art style looks unique.
I'm the only one here who likes it, so send me a free copy when it comes out. Also demo when?
The penguin enemies suck, you can just run past them
Every enemy in every 3D platformer
Looks horrendous.
i'm looking forward to it, probably buying day 1 to play on my 'eck
Hire the Amazing Circle artists to redesign Penny
>hire trannies
Are the trannies in the room with us right now, anon?
Her weird segmented body reminds me of Mischief Makers or some characters from Guardian Heroes
Those games are hideous.
Why copy them.
Because Mischief Makers is soulful
I just hate how everything blends in together, I think it's a lack of contrast, and the whole game looks like it's using the same color palette everywhere.
Bauhaus is a fundamentally flat and incoherent style. You can tell the artists have talent and potential, a lot of the art and color choices seem cool, but the bauhaus influence tragically dilutes it.
That's so much better it's not even funny
Looks like ass but significantly less so
>whitewashing
An Improvement but I still hate the eyes
Good direction, but more so. Should lose all the downward slope completely.
Jesus Christ anon you made a significant improvement and she still looks like Harold.
now give her the teeth from
then penny truly perfected...
You have to change the hair colour tbh, it blends in.
Anon, I know you're talking about Japan. Unfortunately, Sonic's always been an irrelevant shitter in his home island.
I like the gameplay, but that design...
Honest to god I keep seeing a goomba in a wig every time a I look at her.
the way literally everyone turned on this game is hilarious
this poor game is DOA
>Biggest selling point was that it was “from the people behind Sonic Mania”
If you gotta lean on your previous works to sell a product then what you’re selling can’t stand on its own and is likely shit
Retarded take, there’s nothing wrong with reminding people of your track record. Otherwise you might as well say that bands should change name every time they release an album. You’re so jaded you can’t see sense anymore.
Are there any new gameplay videos?
>dev who makes platformer games announces its making a new platformer
>this is somehow not a selling point
>dev makes 2d sonic platforming games
>suddenly makes 3d platforming shovelware
>tranny icon pandering
>b-but brooooo00000 NiGHtS iNtO DrEAmSzzz...............
tranny icon
>tranny icon
Qrd? I know the devs are huge Californian white leftoids, but never heard anything about this.
>MC2 is of indeterminate gender
>"woah.......dang.........................this shit just never crossed my minds........................... i'm just too innocent fr"
not fooling me pal.
Penny is a girl. An ugly girl, but they've been pretty clear she's a girl.
Now post your proof.
That wasn't written or influenced by anyone at Evening Star, blame the writer for injecting that shit into his article.
>post your proof
see
>We've got Penny here. She's our plucky yet unlucky yotagonist. Um, and, I dunno. Uh, take what you will from your impressions behind her design.
Tranny icon still. cope and live in denial.
You're just taking the piss now.
Oh what you wanted a thorough hypothesis? Go eff yourself.
>Oh what you wanted a thorough hypothesis?
Sure. Describe how your only evidence, which amounts to some random journo saying "We don't know Penny's gender" makes her a trans icon.
I sniffed your falseflagging the moment you replied. Probably a dev doing damage control.
one of the most retarded opinions i've seen on this board
Not that anon but Sakurai said something simillar.
they are not even comparing it to sonic
His argument literally accounts for games like the ones based on said idea, hense "same series" because said sepquels is a continiation of said series
Anything LIKE said series counts and thus, should be compared. Is Mario identically like Sonic? No, but the polish and care put behind Mario since day one to how Sonic has post S3K IS comparable because it's clearly no where on the same level for games that are currently being sold at full AAA prices.
ConsideringGanker loves that 16 year old child shantae they would say this is a good design kek
WITHOUT DILATING, DOC!
Since fucking when is Shantae a child?
does this game have slope physics?
Yes.
sick. Is there a webm or a clip of it in action?
Kind of.
interesting. the slope factor value seems kinda low but It might fit this game's slower pace
hmm what a safe kind of vibe. They must had a publisher who wanted to aim a game towards younger audiences or just to be safe
It's more grounded and far less floaty than Adventure and Utopia so the platforming can matter.
I'm hoping there are levels that make more use of the slope physics, like how some Super Monkey Ball levels really utilize it while others didn't.
>that Frontiers-tier pop-in at 10s
Fuck.
It looks like you're playing as a brown person in a wheel chair. Great game
Christ what is it with sonic clones and shitty character designs? Lilac was fine (even if she looked nothing like a dragon), Spark was meh, but this looks terrible. Unironically the adventure knockoff staring the black woman has a better character design than most of these games
>sonic clones and shitty character designs?
>game series with shitty character designs inspires knock-offs who want to emulate the original, complete with its taste for shit character designs
Who could've guessed?
Look of all the many MANY problems with sonic bad character design usually isn’t one of them
have a nice day Richmunk.
Shes so ugly, no way in hell am I gonna play as her.
The question is: Can you lewd this?
we can but we lack the drive
The altar of clown sex is currently occupied and won't be vacant until next year, (un)fortunately.
I'm guessing the design is supposed to be kinda picrel inspired?
The movement in the game seems crisp and fun as fuck though.
should have been white. Pomni is all the rage.
Japs love white women
blacks love white women
whites love white women
only a small minority of white, jap and blacks love minority women
I can't really have an opinion until I've had the chance to play it but I wish the protag's design was as good as the environments.
Not mine btw.
wow that's better
i don't know anything about design but this is the only rendering of her itt that doesn't make me want to vomit
would cum in her hair and in her mouth after giving her a creampie
>nagger
I'll pass
>is going to get BTFO’d by sonic in a MOBILE GAME
it’s over
It will be fun and well made, but sell terribly and a major flop. It just has that energy
I have yet to see a penny redesign that's better than the og
You guys are just mad she isn't coombait loool
Next game she's going to have a mask.
Evening Star

What the fuck?
I think they should have gone with secondary colors instead of prime, purple is always a better color for darken characters to me.
This. If indie devs are going to favor dark-skinned female protagonists, they need to at LEAST pic outfit/hair color schemes and designs that work with the skin tone. Or at the VERY least, NOT cover them head to toe in such clash-y colors. To see what I mean, compare the designs of Shantae and Arzette (the protagonist from that upcoming CDi Zelda parody game) since they use a lot of similar colors - Shantae's a strong cohesive design that works with her colors and emphasizes the color that works with her skin tone best (the purple hair), whereas Arzette is very much a case of "here's a very modest white girl design with fitting outfit/hair color who we just made brown".
So many conceptually cute characters (not even necessarily "attracted" cute), RUINED because they don't work with the dark skin they're given and instead just tack it on.
It looks FUN
Protagonist design is shit, will wait for furries to mod in Blaze.
Is Tysin working on the game? Character design seems shit all around.
What the fuck is that character design?
Is she sex age or no?
i hope not, i love clown dicky
I mean sure her design isn't very good, but she'll have her back turned to you most of the time that you'd hardly have to consider that fact. Do people not like Yo Noid 2 because the Noid looks like, well, the Noid?
I've seen no porn of her. Extremely bad sign.
not everything is about sex, anon.
https://twitter.com/EveningStarStdo/status/1720123612940918897
This gives me a Yoshi's Island vibe for some reason.
>overt bauhaus influence
can you retards stop spouting terms you don't understand
nothing about the designs are "bauhaus", they're just shit
>inb4 that one screencap that spouts off a bunch of nonsense to seethe at israelites
Gameplay looks fine.
Still have no idea what that character design is supposed to be.
Is it human? Is it an animal hybrid? A puppet?
Cause it looks like an old woman in a costume.
I like the Moog synths in the music, Lopes really knew what he was doing
