3D Mario team has not released anything since Odyssey, besides the 3D World port
Mario Kart team has not released anything since Arms, except for help on the RC toy, phone game and roller coaster in Osaka
      Metroid Prime 4
Donkey Kong, presumably, will be returning though it is possible he is just prominently featured in the 3D Mario game
      Meme party game
      That Monolithsoft new IP
Those are all safe bet first wave games. We could guess more speculative stuff, as well, like a Mario Musou or Ocarina of Time remake.

IMO Animal Crossing will be a year two title

Mario Odyssey came out will be 7 years old by the time Switch 2 comes out. So a new 3D Mario is likely to be a launch title.

They're obviously making an open world 3D Mario , probably with segmented off linear levels like in BotW. It will sell 30m in one year and get 10/10s across the board and Ganker will spend years screeching that it's the worst game ever made and an affront to human culture.

It has to be a new 3D Mario. There's no way it isn't finished by now and sitting on the backburner for release with Switch 2. We'll also probably get a new Legends game year one.

Either way it's DOA without backwards compatibility. You don't create a console as popular as the PS2 and then expect all those people to upgrade to the next console, especially when the OLED (Switch Pro) is only 2 years old.

New 3D Mario. Odyssey is over 6 years old now.

Arms was the Mario Kart team. The Splatoon team also does Animal Crossing. Actually, they were the main blue ocean team before dropping that for Splatoon when all that shit flopped at the end of the Wii's life/start of WiiU.

It wont be the key launch game but I think TTYD is gonna be one of the launch titles. We still have no release date even though we're almost into February and we have release dates throughout the summer. Seems obvious it's coming in the fall and it would be bizarre to not have a switch 2 version if it's launching the same time as the switch 2. It would explain why they clearly put so much more effort into this than all their other remasters even though it's a niche JRPG.

Nintendo wants to resell us remakes of their classic games. They've shown this recently with remakes of Mario RPG and TTYD. Even the lazy ass Metroid Prime 1 remaster bordered on being a remake. If they're remaking games, OoT goes right to the top of the list. The fact it had a shitty remake 13 years ago doesn't change that.

Nintendo is intent on regular Zelda releases in the long waits between real games. BotW to TotK had Hyrule Warriors port, Link's Awakening remake, Cadence of Hyrule, Age of Calamity, Skyward Sword port, all the Switch online emulation releases and the Game & Watch.
If you were a salaryman looking for ideas to fill the gap until the next game, Mario if he real Ocarina of Time would be one of the first ideas you would have.

If Metroid Prime 4 ever gets released it's going to be a launch title for Switch 2. Plus there hasn't been a proper sequel to Mario Odyssey at this point and the last of the Mario Kart 8 DLC just got done (unless they announce another pass in the next direct. Given that, Prime 4, Odyssey 2, and Mario Kart 9 could all be candidates for a launch title / killer app.

      Anonymous

Prime 4 will 100% come to the og Switch as well. There is no chance they make it Switch 2 exclusive. But it could be some 30fps 720p on switch vs 4k 60fps on switch 2 type situation

        Anonymous

I just don't see how they could possibly make it run on the base switch. The switch 2 appears to be somewhere between 12-15x stronger. It also has significant features the switch 1 doesn't have like raytracing. And the biggest thing is the file size. A major switch 2 game like that is probably gonna be AT LEAST 30gb but likely over 40. The Switch 1 only has 32gb of total internal storage and I don't think a 32gb switch cartridge even exists let alone anything bigger. I just don't see a cross gen release as feasible here. What is even the downside for Nintendo? It encourages more people to buy the new console. Sure a few people will complain, but how many will that really be? Metroid Prime 4 is a game for the hardcore enthusiast audience. These people are all gonna buy a console immediately. It's not a casual game. There's no 7 year old stuck with a switch 1 for 3-4 years who will be crying over Metroid of all things.

            >The Switch has a massive install base that Nintendo probably wants to exploit for Prime 4
Not everyone in that install base is the same. Prime 4 only appeals to hardcore gamers. No kid is buying it, no woman is buying it. The hardcore 20-40 year old men will be buying the switch 2 day 1. I am doubtful sales would be meaningfully effected by a cross gen release. Rather, I think sales will be higher if they make the game look better by leveraging the hardware as an exclusive. If they do a switch port they're going to have no choice but to design it for the switch then upscale it on the Switch 2. The file size is still only gonna be like 20gb. It's not gonna impress in the same way as if they design it for the switch 2 and use all the power by running it at more like 2k dynamic res resolution instead of 4k with a 40-50gb file size.

          >I don't think a 32gb switch cartridge even exists let alone anything bigger.
It exists, the Witcher 3 uses it. But barely anything else does because of the cost, 64gb ones exist too but no game uses that because of the costs.

          >I just don't see how they could possibly make it run on the base switch
Metroid Prime 4 has been in development for the Switch for years now, so obviously has been targeting Switch specs.
Likely we're looking at a Twilight Princess/BOTW cross gen release scenario where both versions are the near identical but the successor system may have some added bells and whistles (e.g. more stable fps, higher resolution, loading times)

            Anonymous

The problem with comparing it to BotW and Twilight princess is that these games released on consoles that were very similar to the previous one in power. This is not the case here. A switch 1 game is going to look like shit compared to native switch 2 games even if it's running at 4k60.

Sony and MS are paying the price for latching their horses onto that shit wagon for years and it doesn't seem like they'll be around for too much longer as things are going.

As to why they're going with more power, they were making about 6 billion in profit every year so they gotta spend some of that money on something. Hoarding it in the bank doesn't do anything.

Wii may have sold them an assload but no one actually liked wagglan, and the "gimmick" for switch isn't a moronic gameplay gimmick but allowing you to move it around which is actually useful.

One thing to keep in mind is they don't necessarily need most of the games there day 1 to sell the console. They need something big to grab people, but aside from that just advertising that these games are coming will sell consoles. So if they wanted to, they could release the console with just a few games but announce the next Animal Crossing and Zelda very early on, only to release them years later. There's no requirement they announce games 6 months ahead of time.

The tangible presence of games absolutely matters after a point. See: the 3DS prior to the release of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

I did say they needed something. I'm sure 3D Mario and Metroid Prime 4 will be launch titles. But I don't expect them to front load the switch 2 as much as they did the switch. I think that pace was too aggressive, it left too few big games in the second half of its life. But pacing it out more evenly doesn't mean they need to wait longer to announce the games. They can just announce big games years in advance and sell on hype. I could see the next Zelda getting its announcement in 2025 but no release until 2027 or 2028.

I am going to be heartbroken if Twilight Princess and Wind Waker are locked onto Nintendo Switch Online (or whatever its called on the new system) instead of getting an actual purchasable release.

My bet would be NSO and then remakes years later. I think they're gonna remake all the 3D Zelda games except maybe Skyward Sword. OoT very early in the console, then remake the next one every ~4 years after that.

I find it hard to care about this considering Zelda and Metroid are the only Nintendo franchises I really care about as TOTK only came out last year so the next main Zelda game won't be out till like 2030 or something and Prime 4 will probably be on the Switch. I can't really think of anything they could put out on Switch 2 to make me get it year 1. I'm not going to get one for a Mario game or a Kirby game or whatever.

Do you think Nintendo will still release games at a similar rate when they're developing games with higher end graphics for next gen hardware? Switch 1 had tons of good exclusives, but Switch 2 may not have as much of an advantage in this area. Sony's output dropped dramatically from PS3 to PS4.

Nintendo already got a massive drop in output after the Wii died.

I think they can keep a similar rate. Franchise releases will slow down, but they can leverage third parties to make more games for them, which is what they seem to be doing. For example, the recent Mario RPG was made by some random no-name third party. Pikmin 4 was similarly made by some random nonames. We know Bamco set up an entire studio just to make Nintendo games now. Nintendo is uniquely positioned to fund third party games because they have a lot of very popular IPs guaranteed to sell. There's no loss to them if they pay someone to make an F-Zero game or remake Donkey Kong 64 or whatever, because the game will sell 2m minimum and profit.

their switch games seem like it was developed with higher specs, and then downgraded to get to work on the switch
so i don't think it will change much

Sony's been in the process of shooting themselves in every extremity and doesn't give a shit about video games, it's got little to do with fidelity.

Well the bigger thing will be not having the Wii U ports to fall back on to pad the schedule but they can still do remasters of other games so it'll probably be fine.

none of their games go for hyper realism though, they can keep putting out the same level of graphics they have been on the switch with better aliasing and better performance and I doubt many people would complain.

        Anonymous

Not entirely but yeah you're right. Making cell shaded or cartoony graphics look better definitely still takes more money, but not quite the exponential level of hyper realistic games. I'd guess their average game dev costs balloon from like 40m up to like 80-100m. They make about 10 games a year so that's an extra 400-500 million a year. Sounds like a ton right? Except Nintendo has been making about 5 billion in profit per year. They'll survive. And there are ways to make the money back like pushing more NSO subscriptions.

Cost isn't an issue with Nintendo, at least relative to Sony or Microsoft. If BotW's budget (needed 2mil to break even) is any indication, Nintendo doesn't even push for what would qualify as a modern day AAA budget.

They are probably counting on getting a load of 3rd party ports of PS4 games for the 1st year of Switch 2. So stuff like Elden Ring and RE2/RE4 Remake and maybe FF7 Remake and a bunch of other stuff.

They already do this where they will have sales with the game and DLC bundled together. I think Splatoon 3 is currently on such a sale.

In terms of upgraded graphics I think they'll just sell upgrade patches for 15-20 bucks each. There's more money there because most people will not rebuy the same $60 game they already own but they'll pay 20 bucks to upgrade it.

wonder how long it'll take for them to get emulators for it

      Anonymous

It will be more difficult to emulate due to them going with more up to date hardware this time. You're gonna need about 15tflops to emulate it decently. It's not like no one has that, but it's not gonna be commonplace until late in its life.

At the very least I hope it runs without threatening to shit itself every time it has to load another 20 titles in a 2,300+ title sale because lol what is curation, or sorting, or any kind of attempt at fricking arrangement?

Is it possible for them to release graphical upgrades (via massive patches) for all major titles? That's my guess.
