The decision to alter the character sprites so that they all look the same between each Pixel Remaster title even though FF6 had much better sprites to begin with is just about as insane as removing credits from the opening credits
>as insane as removing credits from the opening credits
only the PC and mobile version.
The console versions have the credits during the opening scene.
Uniroinically, the console version is superior to the PC version of Pixel Remasters. And it's dumb, and the only reason is because "Square Enix gonna Square Enix"
But that pic is using the color patch so it looks identical to SNES. >screen crunch
Actually, although PR is in widescreen it has the same zoomed-in look and vertical FOV as the GBA version.
I wanna say "Final Fantasy should return to its 2D pixel art riots!" but the truth is even in that department they can't cut it anymore because they lost the talented pixel art guys and can't shade their fucking sprites propely. All they know how to do is apply a 3D light source over their 2D sprites and call it "2D-HD". The shading in the pixel remasters is so fucking flat.
It's a matter of personal taste, but you can't use a "cherry pick" image like that. FF games released on GBA had internal resolutions lower than the handheld itself.
really? it barely looks any different at all
it's like all they did was slightly update the sprites with some extra color and updated the font
me putting on a lazy ntsc filter with some scanlines looks better
sure it's dark but jeez
never did I say it was good or bad
they changed it and arguably it's worse
I don't see the excuse for remasters like these when it's easily possible to emulate and try to simulate what they were supposed to look like instead of putting up a lazy remix and calling it a day
like they even had ports with better graphics than the original so why stick with original sprites other than autistic purity sakes when they look bad on modern screens without any real upgrades
My bad. I thought you were implying it was improved.
But I agree. If they wanted to remaster it, they should have just taken the GBA version, given it higher resolution and the added QOL improvements. No need to change the graphics.
and so is being willing to play final fantasy 1-6 in the first place
let alone knowing which games are what real number of the title they are
if only square wasn't mentally retarded

not to mention turn based combat alone pretty also removes a bunch of ignorant children who don't know of a time when turn based combat was standard
so yeah it is niche

Fair enough, but the other anon was talking as if we were still in the 90's with the "Final Fantasy 2 is actually 4" and whatever.
You know what's more bullshit? Not letting me use magitek more often, outside of 2-3 scripted scenarios. Is it too much to ask that I get a little Front Mission in my Final Fantasy?
The GBA version is literally the worst version of FF6 and looks and sounds like absolute shit. You are pathetic.
It's blatantly obvious that you are underage and autistic and the GBA version is the one you grew up with. No one with a brain would use THAT fucking version of all things to make the point that the Pixel Remaster is bad.
You can mod the sprites, UI, music, and can add portraits in the PR version.
Their price is retarded but they're the definitive version to play those games.
[...]
if you just wanna play them without doing anything really go ahead but
setting retroarch is just as easy and only takes 3 minutes to set up properly and to download the roms and does not require any mods
yeah but there are way too many versions. each version has a new translation, and a bunch of translation patches if you don't like the regular one. too much to think about.
The Pixel Remasters are great, and they're perfectly fine for someone starting.
But I started on 2(4) on the SNES, so I don't have any attachment to the GBA or PSP versions like some others here do.
>Way too many versions
there's a redd*t page for that my friend
https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/wiki/whichversion/
in almost all cases the psp version is just as good as the pixel perfect remaster and it makes little to no difference of what version you pick you'll still have a good time
pixel remaster does look strange but it requires the least effort to get right now.
would you guys recommend it for a first timer to the series?

Why do companies do this to their old games? Can't they just put the originals out instead of ruining them? Why choose the most sterile looking font? It's always that terrible font.
Yeah, that bullshit font is the one thing making me unsure if I want to buy them. Everyone says to mod it but I play on Switch so that isn't an option.
I thought the console versions of the PR did actually have different font options unlike the PC. Because SE is retarded so there are multiple versions of the PR across both consoles and PC.
Yeah, the console versions have 2 font options. The one in the OP pic is the "classic" font option that they added later. The default font looks even worse. It's ridiculous.
what does the snes version look like
Like the one on the right but with a larger FOV and more crisp.
>crisp.
Only if you're a retard.
You're saying SNES doesn't look better than GBA? Okay then.
>240x160 vs 256x224
Yeah that's nearly 50% more pixels for snes. Of course it's crisper.
The snes version doesn't matter because it's old
YOUR old
Oh and no portrait + different font and translation
The decision to alter the character sprites so that they all look the same between each Pixel Remaster title even though FF6 had much better sprites to begin with is just about as insane as removing credits from the opening credits
tl;dr just play SNES original
first thing I mod out is the opening scene
>as insane as removing credits from the opening credits
only the PC and mobile version.
The console versions have the credits during the opening scene.
Uniroinically, the console version is superior to the PC version of Pixel Remasters. And it's dumb, and the only reason is because "Square Enix gonna Square Enix"
I don't mind the portraits but I wish they used ones that actually match the spires they are supposed to represent.
GBA is just terrible. Just play Super Famicom version or PS1.
What's terrible about it?
NTA but
>fucked up colors due to adaptation for GBA screen
>screen crunch
>slowdowns due to bad optimization
But that pic is using the color patch so it looks identical to SNES.
>screen crunch
Actually, although PR is in widescreen it has the same zoomed-in look and vertical FOV as the GBA version.
If you need to install a bunch of hacks to make it look similar to the snes version why not just play the snes version instead?
The SNES is obviously better. I was just comparing PR to GBA because those are two different versions of the original game.
Fair enough
I remember the music sounding really bad, also it was bright as fuck
I wanna say "Final Fantasy should return to its 2D pixel art riots!" but the truth is even in that department they can't cut it anymore because they lost the talented pixel art guys and can't shade their fucking sprites propely. All they know how to do is apply a 3D light source over their 2D sprites and call it "2D-HD". The shading in the pixel remasters is so fucking flat.
>it's not 1:1 exactly the same thing as original?
>REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
every remaster/port ever
>pixel "remaster"
what exactly was "remastered"?
The music, actually.
The sprites.
They really fucked up on the bronze armour, didn't they? It looks like a burlap hood.
It looks better on a screen that isn't 240x160
It is dumb that they got rid of the portraits for some reason though
Don't forget that the font was made for ants.
It's a matter of personal taste, but you can't use a "cherry pick" image like that. FF games released on GBA had internal resolutions lower than the handheld itself.
faris
Why did they remove the portrait from the "remaster"
because the original game didn't have portraits in the dialogue boxes
Huh, I guess I gas lit myself into thinking it did.
doesn't matter because ff6 is garbage
That's a pretty bold opinion.
>remaster
>isn't really a remaster
>it's just what retards think the game looked like since they been stuck on lcds for the last 20 years
fuck off
Making the sprites resemble "what they were intended to with a CRT" was their main stated reason for replacing the graphics, actually.
really? it barely looks any different at all
it's like all they did was slightly update the sprites with some extra color and updated the font
me putting on a lazy ntsc filter with some scanlines looks better
sure it's dark but jeez
>updated the font
The font is worse in every way, what are you talking about.
never did I say it was good or bad
they changed it and arguably it's worse

the character picture ruins it on GBA, text alone carries the tone better.
Maybe, but the font is so small on the left pic. The name of the person speaking is even smaller.
you can use whichever font you prefer, all you do is place it in the game folder with the proper naming convention
>mod it
Why does everyone say this. A ton of people play on PS4/Switch where that isn't possible.
because, zoomer, that's how oldschool gamers roll
Its bullshit that you can't have the Ragnarok as a weapon and as a magicite at the same time
You know what's more bullshit? Not letting me use magitek more often, outside of 2-3 scripted scenarios. Is it too much to ask that I get a little Front Mission in my Final Fantasy?
Which of the ps1 era games is best?

You tried.
